Well off we go into another 'Tale' and I have to admit that I'm delighted and surprised to be joining in once again. If it weren't for this my Chaos army would happily sit in its box for another year or two! Having read the various posts on here it sounds like a nice informal affair is the best bet with all doing what we can.
That said, I think some kind of progress post once a week would be nice to keep things moving, even if it's just to post a picture of whatever real-life nonsense is keeping painting at bay. For me (this week) that would be baking biscuits with Harry (my son)... I'd also be interested to find out more about how everyone goes about painting WM models and to get some tips, step-by-steps and the like. The more sharing the better for me.
So, I reckon we define our own challenges this time rather than having a blanket requirement to paint x units a week. We can then judge, and be judged, according to our own criteria.
Here's mine:
Paint a 1000 point Chaos army by March 28th when I'm set to head to Warhammer World to meet an old gaming friend for a weekend of playing with toys. I've promised to bring two WM armies to introduce him to the game. My list is currently: General, Wizard, 1 x Knights, 1 x Warriors, 3 x Marauders, 2 x Hounds, 1 x Harpies, 1 x Chariots. Maybe not the best list but it's what I've got on hand at present. I'm planning to embark on a massive batch painting exercise so I expect my pictures will be of massed lines of figures slowly getting done rather than finished units each week. That said, this is just over a unit a week so it'll have to be faster than last time...
Here's the obligatory 'pile of lead' picture:
I've now got the units I'm using based (bar the chariots which I don't own yet) and I hope I can get some colour on them this week (but playing games too much might stop that).
So, what are the rest of you aiming for?
-
I will be joining the Tale. I will continue with the Cthulu-based Daemon army. My goal is to have a legal 1500 pt army fully painted and based by the end. I will have to post later what the army list will be.
As for what I have on hand... Nothing. I will be placing orders for the Daemon hordes and I will be making the Daemon swarms. I will have to keep an eye out for possible substitutes for chariots, and hounds.
For this first week, I will be headed out to the land of insanity called 'Disneyland'. I tremble and shake as I blearily recall being haunted by merry half-sized people singing a simple, repetitive tune. They followed me everywhere, mocking my pathetic attempts at getting away from them and their tinny voices! I remember the words forcing all rational thought from my mind, consuming my conciousness! Those words I cannot and must not recall! It's... No! Resist! It's a small world.... Aaargh!
But really, other that, taking the kids to Disneyland ought to be fun.
-
I'm joining as well with my "Massively-Converted-Khemri-Army" project.
I guess the Tales goes from February to July. If I'm correct, I'm planning painting painting the following list:
* 1 Lich King
* 2 Lich priests
* 6 spearmen
* 6 archers
* 3 chariots
* 1 cavalry
* +2 spare spearmen for invocations
18 units => 3 units per month, plus a character every two month.
This is quite challenging since this list requires quite a lot of conversions, so I'm not sure if I'll succeed.
But I still need a target, at least to know I've missed it ;)
-
I am in.
First off I will be fnishing off my chaos dwarves with 1 sorceror, 1 sorceror on lamassu, 1 earth shaker cannon, 3 units of bull centaurs, 3 units of blunderbusses and 7 units of warriors.
I reckon to have these done by end of February.
Part of that will be a step by step image intense section.
Following on from that I will be doing either albion (been sat in the garage for years and always get put off), araby or brettonian depending on cash flow and the impact of beginning BKC.
To anyone wishing to join the challenge, please do not be put off by what I plan to do. The challenge is a personal thing and it will help you get your models painted even if it is just a few units.
When I sit down to paint, that is all I do for hours so I can knock out large numbers of units in a relatively short timeframe.
I also find an organised approach helps.
Take your time to prepare your models, remove flash & mould, glue to sticks, spray undercoat (I use black for my style of painting), drybrush either chainmail or light grey (foundation).
I normally try to do this for the entire set of models I am painting.
Then when I want to paint, I just get my stuff pick up a prepped unit or two and away I go.
Anyway enough ramblings here are my first few units. Should be the final 2 bull centaurs today.

Greetings!
Goog Luck to everybody, new participants and veterans of the first Tale. I am looking forward to see pictures of your miniatures. Good to see new armies, new ideas about existing ones etc. It will definitely keep me painting my a little boring elves now. :)
Taking the opportunity I would like to share a little of experience I gained during the first Tale. Basically, I managed to decrease the amount of time I need to paint a single stand. Some habits from painting Warhammer miniatures die hard. :) I noticed I can obtain similar effect without shading and/or highlighting. I learned it is worthy to dilute washes sometimes and obtain better look of washed areas. I also switched to painting entire unit in one go instead of working stand by stand. Lighter colour of the bows definitely looks better (Thanks Stomm! :) ). Oh! And banners of any kind is a must! I even consider adding some for my archers, as they lack those.
I am aware this is not new for many of you but nevertheless that is what I learned. :) I believe that everybody likes to paint a little faster without decreasing the quality in the process.
Any new lessons or tips you might add after Tale 1?
Cheers!

Last 2 units of bull centaurs.

Now to start the blunderbusses :)

And so it begins..... with the knowledge that I will already be a week in the hole. :-[ My plan for this go around is to finish the rest of my Ostland army that remains unfinished from the first tale. OH the shame. Actually I am very glad to have participated in the first tale because it allowed me to finish painting more than I otherwise would have and keep tabs on everyone else's excellent work.
So on to the new tale....next week. PW mentioned posting about things that are keeping us from painting for the Tale, so I can at least do that. For the past couple months I've been prepping for our local game Convention, building, painting, playtesting, etc, so my Warmaster painting has been put on the back burner. Here is a pic of just some of the stuff I am still working on. Con is this weekend so got to hurry and get it all done. Then back to Warmaster painting!
Pictured below; some of the culprits responsible for taking away Warmaster painting time.

Wow! Now that looks like some lovely terrain! I wish I had an excuse that good... If things go well with my WM painting this time I'm aiming to try to 'WM-size' some of the current Warhammer terrain, starting with the Chaos shrine thing. Of course I'll have to buy one first to get the measurements and then put it in the Shrinkerizer...

Well, I am enthused. My personal challenge is to get 3,000pts of Araby on the table before year end.
I have been spending some time painting sample strips (lessons learnt from 3500pts of Bretts which took me nigh on 2 1/2 years !), this does two things:
1. Ensures that the colour scheme works, noting that a key colour is a good idea to link them together
2. Take a whole unit, come up with the colour scheme, then drop off one layer of highlight/wash and see if you can notice a difference.
Army builder dip is the way to go (IMHO :).
I have been prepping units (boy how much fun is it snipping and undercoating ?) so have a big pile of lead to go at.
I have also stolen a tip of my gaming buds here, just base 1 strip per base (undercoated black), then at least you can play with them whilst painting the masses. This gives some inspiration, and it feels so much nicer as you whip off an unpainted unit to replace with your latest work of art !
Other nice tip is to add some of that nice felt material (Kallistra games do it), that way the stands don't slide off hills etc.
I will get some photos on at the weekend, next couple of weeks will be painting all my sample units so that I have a feel for the overall army look
Good luck everybody !

A crafty unit of warriors done today.

First attempt at uploading a photo of my unpainted stuff (fingers crossed !)
This is the depressing/challenging view of my Araby army in it's current form.
-
Okay that was pretty rubbish - a tad on the small side, any advice from you pros of how to do it so they look like the ones above !

No worries yours are fine (even better) the expand when clicked

The wife is out of the country next week, so I'll probably be able to get some painting done, if not any sleep though. I'm just deciding whether to finish some of my Space Hulk stuff first, knock off the two units of crossbowmen I need to finally have the minimums for 2k, or to go back to my EIR WMA army and finish some more units for the HW campaign weekend in May...
Hmm, I think that aiming to get my EIR army finished for May is a good goal to go for...
-
My goal is to have a 3K Talabheim Empire army done by the end of the year.
(I actually have over 5K of unpainted Empire lead but trying to paint all of this at once would be overwhelming based on my previous warmaster painting experience)
I have already done 6 regiments of halberdiers and have nearly finished 6 regiments of crossbowmen. I will be working on 3 regiments of flaggelants next and that will be the infantry done!
Pictures will follow later as I am relying on Mr Mark Relf to take them for me.
Good luck everyone.

Hi guys
Its nice to see another good turn out for the 'Tale'. I really enjoyed following the last one even though I was pretty much absent from it. (I said that I was going to do 'Dogs of War' but quickly moved onto MEWM and didnt want to break the flow)
I think this one will be a little better suited to my painting habits of not being able to stick to one project for more than a few seconds. Because of my slow painting and modelling skills I am aiming for a most modest project, hopefully none will scoff at my proposal. Over the next few months I hope to get a Lizardman army together for Warmaster Skirmish, this will be measured in stands rather than units and I hope to finish about 20. I also want to get my beloved chaos army that little closer to being done. I picked up a few more units of demons for it and also the 'Mystery piece' which I will elborate on it weeks to come. Apart from that i am working on a few big beasties that are being converted up for WM aswell as a few more Middle Earth bits whose ranks are slowely swelling.
I have shown it before but its all I have finished for my Lizards so far, my trial skinks.
Best of luck to everyone!

Thanks for the feedback on the photos.
Ok, here goes. Currently painting my sample units, at this stage will try and paint a strip or so of each type in the army to make sure that I can "glue" the whole colour scheme together across the various units.
The attached photo is for my Araby Spearmen, technique and colours as follows:-
1. Standard prep and spray undercoat chaos black.
2. Drybrush Codex Grey, this acts as the base coat for the robes (black) and also id's the detail to make it easier to paint later.
3. Paint ground Tausept Ochre.
4. Drybrush any chainmail.
5. Flesh, now I now it should be dark flesh but it doesn't really give the contrast - in this case I used Tallarn flesh. Any advice on painting darker skin would be appreciated.
6. Weapon hafts, I use a two stage approach. First is Snakebite leather, then highlight (heavily) with Bubonic Brown.
7. Turbans, this is the key colour and I messed around with various permutations a bit, eventually went for a bold approch to make it stand out. Basecoat is Liche Purple, then highlighted with 50/50 Liche Purple and Tentacle Pink (I don't have much purple mixing experience so again tips welcome !
8. Sheilds, banner and belts. Mechrite red, then Blood Red, bit of highlight (50/50 Blazing Orange and Blood Red)
9. Gold was a basecoat of bubonic brown 50/50 with burnished gold, then ink washed (brown) - only on the standard, wouldn;t bother elsewhere with a finish off with burnished gold.
10. Weapons in chainmail (I always like to weapons last as it is quite nice as it generally brings the figure to life).
11. Script on banner are just letters from the Arabic alphabet - no meaning.
I am aiming to get this first unit painted this week, plus complete some more samples. Feedback on approach/suggestions much appreciated.

Hi Mark
Those look just about ready to take outside and tread on! :)
Those photos of my Empire you took and sent to my works e mail have been quarantined as "possibly rude" ??? and wont be released as they are not work related. Please would you send them to my home e mail address instead was10@live.co.uk
Thanks
How do you go about actually dropping picturesi nto a post? (and wouldn't this make a good permanent "sticky"?)

Here's a quick picture of my week's work:
If I'm going to get the army done by the end of March I think I'm aiming to paint 29 bases (not units) in total which means a painting rate of one every other night... So, that's three down and plenty to go. Tomorrow the other unit of hounds gets finished and hopefully I'll have time to stick some more paint on the Warriors I've started. You may have guessed that to keep my morale high I'm starting out with the easy stuff.
@Mark - those look great. If you've not seen them then you might want to check out posts by Pugwash, his Araby are nice and he used some great transfers for the banners. I can't remember how he did the skin but I reckon yours looks fine as it is, as you say the contrast is really important.
EDIT: having seen the pics that grass needs a trim!
-
PW, very nice - what colours did you use for the main body of the fur?
One unit every other night boy, I "aim" for one unit a week !
Yes I did clock the other Araby, they were v.nice and I stole some ideas from them, I might go to transfers for the script, arabic script at 10mm is hard work !
-
MrMarkRelf - Really nice start to the army. A nice choice of colours. The arabic script is really nice, do the characters mean anything or is it mumbojumbo. I hope its something really mundane like 'Corn on the Cob'. Paint more!
David Wasilewski - if you have a photobucket or imageshack account (any image hosting thing really there are dozens) you can upload your photos onto it and then all you need to do is drop the IMG link into your post (The IMG link is displayed next to any uploaded image, it basically is a web address that a forum will follow and let you view the picture). Paint More
Pw - Nice hounds, I am looking forward to see what you do with your warriors. I was torn between painting my chaos silver or black, the packmasters? handlers? dog walkers? look great in that unit. If you have not built your other unit of hounds and have some un built chariots you can swap the warriors (as both have whips) for a little variation. Paint more!
MrMarkRelf - One unit a week!? I am aiming for a Stand a week! I need to paint more.
-
@Mark: The hounds are Calthan brown, washed with Devlan Mud and then highlighted with Bestial Brown and another one (Snakebite leather?).
Hopefully tonight we'll find out if I make unit two. My target is a more modest BASE per 2 nights rather than a UNIT per night, I still think I'm likely to fail, it all depends on what marauders are like to paint...
-
Hi guys time for my first real update.
These are some more trial stands for my Lizardman army for Warmaster Skirmish. I have found painting lizardmen really hard but refreshing. I am using lots of colours I usually wouldnt touch and have little experience with. Hope you like them.
Skinks
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/tomandjoe/DSCF1524.jpg)
Saurus
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/tomandjoe/DSCF1526.jpg)
Kroxigor
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/tomandjoe/DSCF1528.jpg)
My first skink hero, I wanted this guy to be a defender of the forst that watches any man made paths near the lizardmen temple. Stalking his prey on the back of his giant chameleon.
Group Hug. This is my army so far 360pts ish...
For warmaster skirmish we are using capturable objective. We came to the conclusion that a unit would need to be able to sit on the objective after trying to work out closest unit rules and contested objectives which was a majour headache. Mine is a lost jungle spawning pool that the lizards would jump to the defense of if needs be.
Once on the objective a unit counts as having no flanks or rear and gets the defended bonus. Imagine trying to shift these guys! (This pic is just to show a unit fitting into the objective)
And coming up next will be my bigger beasties section. I am just having some colour troubles which I will open to the floor. I am not sure what colour to paint the wildlife in the army... I want all the skinks, saurus and kroxigor to be blue to show they are all from the same army/spawning, but I am not sure if I should have my Stegadons, terradons, salamanders and cold ones that colour too... I am unsure of a contrasting colour... Maybe red as there are token pieces of red on the units, maybe green as it would look more natural (but they might get lost among all the plants (Chameleon is an exception i wanted him to blend in)).
Any thoughts?
This guy is going to represent a stegadon for the time being.

Great work there Angor.
Really makes me want to go and rebase my lizardmen army ::).
As for colour schemes for your beasts, I split my army in to 2 factions and did darker tones of the faction colours on the beasts.
This helps to make them stand apart from the smaller units whilst still adding a touch of uniformity to the force.
Loving your Chaos work PW, I find chaos hounds to be very useful for the points ;)
MMR - nice to see more araby, might one day get to play against this army :) on which note I must go and order mine ;D
-
I´d like to join the tale with my Undead forces. I need to reinforce my already finished 5 Spearmen, 4 Archers, 3 Chariots and 2 Cavalry a little bit. So most important I need some commanders und support troops like artillery, monsters and flyers. Then some more Infantry and Cavalry will follow to get more of a horde army. So this will be:
- 1 Tomb King
- 3 Liche Priests
- 3 Skeleton Spearmen
- 1 Skeleton Archers
- 4 Skeleton Cavalry
- 1 Sphinx
- 1 Skull Chukka
- 1 Bone Throwers
- 1 Carrions

Here is this weeks offering.
3 units of blunderbusses.

I apologise for the poor picture quality, I will remedy this for the warriors.
I was hoping to finish this part of the tale off this week with the last 6 units of warriors but illness has hit so I am giving myself to Father Nurgle until the pox has passed :)

Guthwine,
Your eagles are v.nice, what colours/technqiue did you use ?
I am ploughing on with 2 units if spearmen at the moment (as per my sample unit), however, I fear that my Son's Birthday later this week will slow me down !
-
Angor: Those Lizardmen make me drool! Those are awesome! Where did you get the ancient stone work for the bases?
Guthwine: The Eagles look great!
As for me: Disneyland was great! I will post a picture or two in my gallery thread later. I visited San Diego also, and visited Game Empire, and picked through their bits boxes for an hour. I've got some new bits I'll be using in some later daemon army projects.
I placed orders for the models I plan to use for the Daemon hordes. I will be using Pendraken 10mm Sci-Fi 'small creature' and some variations on 'medium creature'. I have not yet had a chance to start sculpting up the daemon swarms.
In the meantime, I started work on the Greater Daemon left over from the previous challenge. I will post pictures of that this weekend, regardless of its state.
I also ordered a lobster chariot from Pendraken. I have no idea what it looks like, so it will be fun to see what I get.
-
Thanks Mark/Ed.
They are fairly simple to paint.
1)Black basecoat
2)heavy drybrush with scorched brown (leave the black where you want black feathers to be)
3)drybrush beastial brown
4)paint the black (chaos black) and white (kommando kahki) feathers on the wings and some on the body
5)Mix some beastial brown with a bit of bleached bone and drybrush over the browns.
6)Add some more bleached bone and only drybush the upper brown areas where the most light would be.
7)Very lightly drybrush all feathers with bleached bone
8)Lightly drybrush the white areas with skull white
9)In this case the brown areas might be too light because of the bleached bone, if thats the case lightly drybrush over them again with bleached bone.
With the lighter background it still will be lighter than bestial brown and less white.
The yellow parts are snakebite leather followed by a bubonic brown highlight followed by light sunburst yellow highlight.
-
well the gaunlet has been thrown down by 2 other members of my local group, Dave Vos and Mr Ralf, i will pick up the challange and paint my 4000 point High Elf army, the annoying thing is this is the second high elf army i have painted, when Warmaster first came out i did 2000 points of nicely painted high elves but we stoped playing soon after so i got rid. We have now been shown the light and find Warmaster the most fun games we play. My painting style is quick having painted 2000 points of Chaos Demons in just under 4 weeks for another of our group but i'll let you judge if quick is good enough, pictures to follow once i have got some done.
-
At last, some competition ;D
Welcome to the tale.
-
Hi Marky "Tank factory of the Urals" Parky.
Apologies if this is slightly off topic:
This guy is amazing - he paints more than our entire group put together. He is right about Warmaster though - we all tried it when it first came out and made the big mistake of playing v small battles with no terrain. This meant that luck (in the form of command rolls) and heavy cavalry (in the form of chaos knights) spoiled our games and put us all off the system. About 2 years ago me and one more member of the group (Dr Jon aka Dr Lovely) tried it again with bigger forces and more terrain. Our group has never looked back! Between us we now have every army represented (half of them are even painted) and we regularly play between 3K and 6K a side games between the 6 of us. I suspect Warmaster Ancients is in our tea leaves for the future too.
Back on topic: I have now completely finished 6 regiments of halberdiers and 6 regiments of crossbowmen and will post piccys soon if MrMarkRelf takes some photos and sends to the right e mail address.

i will try and send to the correct e-mail address this time, sorry got confused I think I used the one that I sent those ones of you and the hamsters to....
I am currently spending tonight decorating a pirate ship cake for my son's 5th Birthday, not quite 10mm and the icing pens do not quite have the flow of Vallejo paints. Do you think anyone will notice if I resort to acrylics ?
Vos you are showing me up, I only have 2 units of spearmen half painted, hey ho, I will need to step up-to the mark next week.
-
The quality of your painting Mark - you might get better results? :)
No, seriously, I'm not sure that the Empire infantry count as I've been painting them since before xmas!
I wasn't having a dig - it's my works e mail filter that is the problem. If you could send them to was10@live.co.uk
Cheers
Vos

Lots of good stuff so far, I'll single out Angor's bases for my first ever use of this smiley: :o . And that eagle recipe is about to get used on my 28mm one! Let's see if it works out. And could there be competition for Azrael! That'll be both inspiring and terrifying in equal measure.
In such company I'm a bit ashamed of my slack speed. I'm almost certainly failing at my speed challenge, mainly because I'm spending my evenings marking rather than painting. But, here, later than planned, is the second unit of hounds:
To make up for it here's a sneak peek at my other project:
It's my first attempt at sculpting in 10mm and I've decided that patience is the key if you're as bad as I am so I'm sculpting tiny bits at a time rather than risking messing stuff up. It's meant to be Grimgor and is part of my attempt to get my Storm of Chaos campaign written up and underway. As you can probably tell I've been hugely inspired by Vincent's fabulous work. I wouldn't have started yet but I've just picked up these beauties:
I have to say that they're nicer than I expected and it means that I've now got a new general for my chaos army (so this is just about on topic).

Where on earth did you manage to get those? I'm sure I've been keeping tabs on ebay for, well at least four or five months now to look out for these...
-
Yes, come on where did you get them?
-
They came from a chap on TWF. I put a wanted ad on there with a hefty cash reward attached.
-
Lucky Bast$$d :D
-
Indeed... :-\
-
I must admit that getting these figures has been very good news. Partly because I wanted them and partly because I was wasting time on ebay hunting for them (I think I checked a couple of times most days). Having failed with many wanted ads in the past this time I went with a specified 'bounty' for anyone who could help me - with no idea what the ebayable value might be I went for a sum that I thought might be attractive enough to get people to dig through their collections. I'd now love to see some on ebay to see how much they'd fetch, until then I'll never know if I went overboard or not...

About 6 mont ago I've seen a complete, un-opened set on ebay. The final price excluding S&H was about $60 :o

Wish I'd seen that, I'd pay maybe £50 for a set (that's just under $80 at the moment). Well, so long as I can hide it from the wife anyway...

Here are the piccys of my 12 regiments of Empire Talabheim infantry:

Here's my offerings for this week.
The final 6 units of chaos dwarf warriors.
Last installment of these before I move on to the next army
6 units of warriors.

Got to say I am really inspired by some of the modelling this time around so I am going to give it a go for my 2 bray shaman.
My bestamn army arrived this morning and what with the new WFB army book I have decided to start these over the Albion army (will it ever get painted?)

Total army photos.

@David and Mick - you guys are amazing. And to be honest it makes tonight's picture from me just a little embarassing! Here's what I've completed so far this week:
Here he is again:
In my defence I've got a unit of knights half-way done and I've just built up my chariot unit. Hopefully there will be some more Chaos stuff to show by the weekend.
-
PW, I wouldn't be embarrassed at all with that figure at all !
Doing your heroes first is a good idea, my Brett army is finished and I still have heroes not quite done, considering that they are put on table every game !
I am still half way through the two units of Araby Spearmen that I started last week !
-
Loving the hero PW.
You cannot go wrong with chaos :)
My mate played with mine last Thursday and I love the models.
Just can never win with them :(
-
PW - I have been painting the above 12 units on and off since about September!!!! It was this painting blog that has inspired me to actually finish them. Characters take a lot longer to paint but they deserve it as the 'focus' of the army. You have done an excellent job of your lord - if you can paint just one character a week you are moving forward!
The Chaos Dwarves are amazing - unique and evocative basing makes them really stand out!
I will be moving onto 3 regiments of Flagellants next but expect it will take me at least 3 weeks to finish them. I am thinking browns/greys/whites as per normal Flaggelant colours but with some red to key them into the rest of the army. I need a name for a band of Talabheim Flaggelants - are there any anyone can recall from any Black Library/Mordheim literature? Otherwise I will make one up.
Dave
-
Dave - thanks. I am rubbish at bases so thought I would make these stand out for a change.
As for your flagellants could you not incorporate the talabheim logo (if there is one) onto the banners to tie them in?
The CD's are getting their first outing tomorrow :) against dwarves, trying to persuade my mate to try out some of the alt lists.
Now, how am I going to do 2 bray shaman?
Also looking towards completeing the dwarf alt lists, just need miners (rangers), militia(bofa dwarves) and a goblin hewer (???)

Dave
An ochre-brown, IoW 'rusty brown' and sack cloth white (IoW washed bleached bone, then highlighted back up again) scheme would in my mind work well enough to tie flagellants into a Talebheim army. Basically go for colours that 'hint' at your state colours, whilst not actually being them.
For my Reikland army I've gone for a light sack-cloth effect, with the odd detail picked out in red for the unit I have finished, and my intent is to do the same but with some details picked out in blue for a 2nd unit. As and when I ever expand my Empire army by going for a 'best painted' section, IoW painting some more to the best of my ability, I'll likely go for all different shades of brown, erring on the dark side, with black in places and maybe the odd small red detail, ropes, etc... And if I do a 2nd unit in such a fashion I would try to just differentiate the units through the use of different shades of brown, maybe going lighter with one and darker with the other, or maybe injecting some green into the mix, not actual green-colours, but adding it to the robe colour mix for some subtle toning...
Hmm, I really need to finish off that first 2k don't I? I've actually hit a bit of a 'painter's block' these last couple of weeks. I've had the opportunity to paint, but I just haven't been able to inspire myself to do anything, not even assemble or clean up a few plastic figures, never mind put brush to model.
I think this might be because I know that I have no chance of finishing my EIR army for the HW weekend in May, I really need to get working 40k and WH armies sorted out for club use, of course Space Hulk is still a factor, and my Warmaster Empire army has been in an 'almost finished' state for literally years.
So, I think that in order to loosen this mental blockage I need to focus on one of my goals that is both achievable, and will give me some real satisfaction. To that end, I think that I am going to try to finally finish off my Warmaster Empire army to a full 2000pts. And by 'finish', I don't mean just painting the two units of Crossbowmen and the mortars that I've got to get it to 'tournement legal' status, but to put together that second unit of flagellants and paint them rather than always proxying a unit of undercoated Kislev bears, reworking all those units of knights that I painted the night before the very first Call to Arms in my hotel room at 3am after having been out drinking with Steve Hambrook, Andy, Wayne, Chris & Co. Finishing all their bases, and retouching any bits of battle damage. And maybe even treating myself to finally painting the Steam Tank that as it happens was the very first model in my Empire army that I assembled and undercoated...
So, first up should hopefully be a unit of crossbowmen, maybe both actually. Once I've tidied up my painting area and got myself set up, I'll see if I can organise all the units that I intend to have finished, including those that are already done. I'll see if I can take a couple of photos for the 'before' shots, including seperating them into 'these are fininished/need a bit of TLC', and 'these need work doing' groups. Wish me luck...

Also looking towards completeing the dwarf alt lists, just need miners (rangers), militia(bofa dwarves) and a goblin hewer (???)
If you can get hands on some spare dwarven gunners, they make great base to do some miner figures !

Well, you know I am not paiting as speedy as you are 8)
I will give them priority, and photograph when ready
Gimme another 2 years :-X
-
All around great looking contributions so far. And Mick your speed continues to amaze. In effect you have painted two entire armies in the time I am still slogging along to reach 1000 points...... ;D
Dave, the only flagellant unit name I recall coming across is the Flagellants of the Red Redemption from the "Uniforms & Heraldry of the Empire" book. Red would obviously be a reocurring color, they are said to be well known in the Forest of Shadows.
Finishing up some Ostland crossbow that I will post pics of later today.
-
Excellent stuff all around! Those Chaos Dwarves look awesome, and I love the bases. I've been trying to make the bases for each of my armies different, so it is easy to see that the units belong togehter. I was running out of ideas until I saw those.
I am charging like a turtle out of the gate. I have started one unit of Daemon swarms. I am putting a little 'scene' on each base. I will post pictures of the current state over the weekend. The current swarm unit will be depicting the swarm over-running some Empire troops.
Work, travel, and illness (sinus infection) are slowing me down. I look forward to making more progress this weekend. 8)
-
Well I'm not off to a roaring start, more of a slight coughing start. But I finished up a unit of Crossbow for the Ostland army. After I did my first Crossbow unit I decided that all my units should have standards of some sort, so when doing the 2nd unit, I made two stands with standard bearers so I could swap one stand with the first unit. Now that the 2nd unit is finished along with a standard stand for the first unit, I'll post both units even though the first unit was mainly finished previously. Confused? Good, my plan worked perfectly then. ;D
Ostland Crossbow units.
Original with added standard.

Both units.

And since I haven't done an "Army so far" picture for a while, here is the Army so far.
Next more knights, handgunners and characters.
-
These look great.
Anyone who paints an empire army should get double points ;D
-
David Wasilewski - I really like your Empire infantry. I am a bit of a sucker for red and white empire they always look great!
Azraelezekiel - The more I see you Chaos Dwarves the more I know I have to buy some at some point... Please Stop painting inspiring armies I dont have enough time to copy them.
Pw - I really like your paint scheme, Its very neat and really well defined. I imagine an army painted to that standard will look great on the battlefield. (I think my chaos were a little too dark so they lose alot of detail when viewed from more then a few centimeters away)
Lex - I want to see those miners too!
Black Ed - Please post some pictures of your awesome army! I really want to see more painted. (Btw where did you get your Demonic flute pipe player from? or was it a sculpt :o)
M4jumbo - That empire stuff is great! I really like units having a command stand (It helps for a little clarity in the game and looks awesome) the banners on your crossbowmen are really nice. How did you make them?
-
Greetings!
I am really impressed by all the submission in the second tale. It's great that new people are coming with fantastic ideas. As always it is very difficult for me to comment on particular submission as all your work is great. Keep them coming! :)
-
@m4jumbo - very nice stuff indeed, it's got me wanting to continue with my own Empire but for now it must be Chaos! Once they Chaos reach 1000 points I'm planning to alternate, adding a unit at a time to each army. And when I do get back to the Empire I'll certainly be adding in banners to my Crossbows. I'd thought about it and decided I couldn't be bothered. Now I see that was a mistake so in they'll go. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.
On a barely-related note. What sort of gaming mat is that your toys are on?
@Angor: Thanks! Your Chaos army is amazing, it is the reason I decided to get mine painted. I was sad to see that the pictures had gone from Warseer - are they available anywhere else? I'm trying to compile a file of inspiring WM pictures. As for the brightness - it goes against all of my instincts painting them this way but my usual muted style tends to disappear once things hit the tabletop so I'm trying out painting in a way that looks slightly garish up close but which has enough 'pop' to look good at arm's length.
-
@ Angor The banner poles are simply straight pins, trimmed to size, one with a "liberated" Tomb Kings skull on top. The banner is masking tape wrapped around the pins, sticky sides stuck together. I tried aluminum foil for the banners as I had read that you could make nice shaped banners from aluminum foil, but the paint just flaked off. Masking tape is very forgiving to work with. I've also made some in the past with paper, but I think the masking tape is more durable and has a little bit of texture.
I'm definately happy with the look of the banner and "command stand" added to units that don't normally have them. I will be adding them to other units like handgunners too. I think with the handgunners and maybe the additional crossbows I will go with more of a slender pennant rather than a full banner.
@ pw The gaming mat is a large piece of indoor/outdoor carpet I came across at a garage sale many moon ago and made a 4 x 8 table top out of. I've looked for something similar since then because it really makes a great game surface but haven't had any luck finding a match.
-
@m4jumbo, I once made an army banner for a very old skaven army out of aluminium foil.
I gave the foil a quick rub over with a scouring pad to improve adhesion, then a quick spray of undercoat and it was good to go.
Never had any issues with paint flaking after that.

I've posted them in my main post; I don't know if it is a good idea to re-post them here.
So I do, and tell me if that is not needed.

vincent, wow very nice. With the colors and re-work you have done on the shields those really match the look of the current WFB Khemri.
-
@vincent - those shields really do make a difference to the tk army.
A bit to labour intensive for me though ;)
Can't see me getting much painting done this week as I am knocking up 4 units of centigors (decided not to wait for the new models from eureka scheduled for some time this year).
Using eureka beastmen, stags and a bit of green stuff.
Here are the results 4 units worth.

Also going to prime the bestigors, minotaurs and the remaining characters.
Looking forward to seeing everyone else's efforts :)
-
The Piper of Blasphemous Melodies is a RAFM figure from the Call of Cthulu line. It is a "Servitor of the Outer Gods". I just added the levitation. And the ripped up earth. ;)
I have one unit of swarm sculpted. I am sculpting a second unit of daemon swarm, of which I have 1 stand done. I plan to get 4 sculpted.
I am hoping to receive my shipment from Pendraken soon. I am trying to be patient, but I really want to see those figures and start assembling the 6 units of Daemon hordes I'll need for a 2K army.
I got hit with a Trojan on my home computer on Friday night. It prevented me from uploading pictures! I think I can clean up the mess and post something tonight or tomorrow morning.
I have 7 LOTR figures to paint for Saturday -- I am participating in a Tale of Gamers for War of the Ring. This is only on-topic as far it is a reason my progress has been slow lately.
-
Vincent - WOW. Those are the best TK minis I have ever seen.
I have only cleaned and sprayed my 3 regiments of Flagellants this week - been too busy at work to do more. Will try and do flesh and wood this week.
David
-
Very great stuff is going on here. Every single army in this Tale of Painters is growing quite fast and most of them have an outstanding high standard of painting.
@all: Go on like this.
-
Just 5 characters today as I have been working on my shaggoth :0
Not too happy with these pics as the colours are not coming out quite right especially on the veins on the herdstones (inspired by me reading shaman slayer at the minute).
Will have to have a play with the settings :(

All the other stuff quite good - I like the freehands on the Tzeentch Bray Shaman
Keep on beeing that busy.

Very nice beastmen!
@Vincent: Amazing units! Really impressive. I think I have to challenge that army when its done! :)
I didnt make it for last weeks entry but I am working on it! Heres a rough WIP of 2 Chariot crews:

Hope to finish the chariots by the end of this week.

-
Azrael, those beastmen look very nice. I wasn't sure about them when viewing them on the Eureka web site but seeing yours painted they definately look good. Now I have to try and resist buying yet another Warmaster army.
-
@Vincent: Superb stuff, not that I expected any less from you. I'm now scouring ebay for super-cheap undead so that I can have a go at a unit or two of skeletons in the same style to see just how viable a whole army would be.
@Azrael: I love the fact that you've not only raced way ahead but that you've had to start a whole new army just to keep us company. Those beasts look really good, the only think I'm unsure about is the blue patterning on the herdstones (I like the red one). Maybe it's because it looks metallic.
@Guthwine, looking good, that non-blue scheme is very nice indeed.
As for my painting, a crazy work schedule and the winter Olympics has put a serious dent into my painting time. The fact that I've just agreed another Blood Bowl commission isn't going to help much either. Still, I'm determined to get a unit sorted this week so there should be something to share by Sunday.
-
@guthwine - loving the greens on your elves, they really do make a nice change
@everyone, thatnks for the kind words.
The veins on the herdstones are both metallics but not showing up (as you would expect) I have gone round then with black to make them stand out more.
As for racing ahead, as I have said before, please don't let my speed put you off, it is just how I paint, we all do things differently and that is a good thing. I wish my quality was up there with everyone elses. One thing I have got from these challenges is trying to make a bit more of an effort with the basing ;)
I do burn out regularly and cannot go near an army for months.
Got to say the thought of the 15 units sat undercoated follwed by around another 24 is starting to be a little overwhelming :)
-
I keep saying "pictures soon", but I'll say it again. Pictures soon!
My Pendraken order came in. I am using the 10mm aliens from the sci-fi range. Khursan Miniatures has 15mm "space demons" that are larger versions of basically the same thing. I plan on using one of the larger demons on the base to indicate a "command" stand, and then filling the rest of the stand with 10mm figs.
I also ordered AC34 -- "Tentacled Behemoth", which I will use as the figures for a second unit of Daemon beasts.
-
hi Guys not posted for a couple of weeks but i have had a good excuse, my wife has just given birth to our 4th Son via c-section, so not had much opportunity to paint, saying that i have managed to complete 5 units of high elves as test cases and am happy with them, i have gone with a golden armour theme similar to LOTR elves, hope to get pictures posted with the help of Mr Ralf. Also managed to paint 3 units of warmaster medievals for my Italian Condotta army, full 1500 points painted now, played my first big game last night down at my club, 3000 points a side it looked and played awesome, i really like some of the rule changes they made to Warmaster historical and would dearly love to see those changes with the fantasy version.
Anyway off to Dave Vos to do some more painting, hope to get those pictures up soon.
-
Congratulation for there recruitement ;)
-
We painted at mine last night (I did the flesh on my 3 regiments of flaggelants). Mark shared an awesome idea for his High Elves - to make some of the chariots be pulled by lions - (white lions of Chrace style) anyone know any 10mm lion like models that would be of an appropriate size?
Oh and Marks 5 regiments of HE are excellent - the white and gold makes them very bright.
Dave Vos

If you find appropriate models let me know, I was also thinking of that but sadly havent found the right models yet.

splintered light miniatures do nice ones (They might be 15mm but fit great).

i think that confirms my idea, they look great and add that unique look to the army, i will be on the look out at Sheffield Triples in April for suitable models, 15mm seem to look right size possibly 10mm will be too small.
-
splintered light are a us firm.
What day you going to the triples?
I think we are going on the Saturday, but the venue is only 10 minutes away ;)
-
MarkyParky, MrMarkRelf, Dr Crispytoast and I will be at Triples both days - it is a long standing tradition of being a 'lads' weekend away with no wife/children responsibilities and curry/beer on the Sat night (we all stay over).
We should meet up for a beer if you are going? The only problem will be arranging where as it is a new venue that none of us have been to before?
Dave
-
It is down the 'cliffe' which homes some of sheffield's best curry houses and roughest pubs ;)
Got to say I am looking forward to it at the new venue as parking will be a breeze :)
-
Just finished my SH test piece, so I should get some Warmaster painting done fairly soon. That is about all I can say I guess, other than well done everyone who has been painting their small toys, and I'll try to get a photo of my BA Termie up some time soon in my general painting thread.
-
Just managed to get the knights finished. Close up they're one of my worst WM units, from a distance one of the best... Painting for the look on the tabletop is very wierd! Here they are:

Great work everyone.
I doubt I will have any offerings this week, perhaps a unit of minotaurs if I am lucky.
Mainly due to work and painting up a 1750 mixed chaos force quickly to sell on eBay.
Here are the first 5 units and heroes, just got 3 units of maruders and 2 units of marauder horse then they are ready for the off :)

Trouble is I really like them and am seriously considering keeping them, but that makes my chaos army bigger than anyone could ever use ;)

Pw - I am really loving the colour scheme. The silver looks really really good, you have a nice colour balance for the models which really stands out. Keep up the good word this army is going to look sweet.
Azrael - If I were you I would not sell those models. In my opinion these are possibly the best models I have seen you paint so far! What did you do differently this time as it really worked. I am a real fan of those Khorne and Nurgle warriors the paint scheme is awesome, I thought I was almost done with my chaos army but I am tempted to paint some dedicated warriors for each of the gods after seeing these. Great job!
