Title: Tale of Warmaster Painters II: March...
Post by: pw on March 01, 2010, 07:29:01 PM
Just noticed that it's March.   The month of longer days, the teaching term ending, a weekend trip to Warhammer World, and my birthday. I love March. ;D

Weekend trip to Warhammer World? I'm planning on going to the HWW in May for some WMA, but wasn't aware of anything else until then...

As promised this weeks offerings to the Lords of Chaos.
First off my last unit of minotaurs and 5 units of hounds.
The minotaurs are supposed to be tzeentch themed, I had done the fur blue, then the kids got dressed up as supergirl so the bulls ended up with red loin cloths :)

My output has been reduced by a bit of painters block caused by the marauders.
2 units of slaanesh and a unit of khorne.
But once I sorted out a new way of painting them I motored through them.
Almost to the point where I got the remaining 8 units out of the model store ;)

Hey Azrael those marauders looks really really good. Those GW figures are so great sculpted, but I think they are one of the most difficult units to paint.

To all: I see a great paintjob and original ideas in this second edition. I would like to have time and share this edition with guthwine and all of you. Maybe the third i will be in ;)

regards!

Those Marauders look great - I'm certainly going to be borrowing that blond hair idea - what colours have you used for that?

As for my painting I've allowed myself to be massively distracted by many things, and when I've been painting I've accidentally started lots of new projects (Valhallan IG for 40K, Pirate Crew for Ron & Bones, terrain for Legends of the Old West, and an old citadel Serpentine Dragon that I've been painting up as a mother's day present!).

The good news is that last night I began a unit of harpies (I figured at four models a base they'd be quite quick). I spotted some for sale on ebay that had been painted green and it looked like a nice quick easy scheme that would bring a splash of colour to my otherwise rather samey army so I hope to have some green harpies to show by tomorrow night.

What's everyone else up to?

Thanks for the comments.
I usually take a long time painting all the furs and hair different colours.
So I decided to try this new method that is basically a dipping method.
Paint all your base colours (apart from the purples and pinks, these are done using elf flesh and purple and red washes), I did use 3 shades of yellow (the 2 citadels and one of my own mix that is 50:50 sunburst yellow and white) for the hair.
I did do 3 seperate skin tones using standard citadel colours for the 2 lighter ones and an old mix a did years ago that gives a darker skintone that is very nice when combined with the next step.

Then a liberal application of devlan mud everywhere.
Leave to dry then base, varnish and add static grass sorted.

As for what is next I have my centigors out, but I am toying with doing my last 4 units of marauders and 4 units of marauder horse   ;D
I am also planning on magnetizing all my bases (lots and lots and lots) whilst taking new pics of them all.
I did a small calculation of my chaos last night (all 3 boxes of them) and they look to be coming in at 12000 points :o :o, so looks like I will be hosting an epic week long siege game this summer :)

If some day you dare to take the chaos army out of the boxes  :P. A pic of 12.000 pts army will be appreciated.

For your information jchaos they came out last night  :P
And promptly trounced the opposing dark elves in 2 turns :)

I am going to try to take new pics of all my armies but I am unsure how I take a pic that will show all the models in detail whilst capturing the size of the horde.

Azrael - well done. Looks like it has been a slow month for most of us so far except for you!

I must admit I'm suffering from painting burnout after doing the empire infantry. I hope to get the muse back next week and then crack on with my flagellants. The good news for our little Lancashire Warmaster fanatic group is that we have another convert who has told us he will be buying large Tomb King and Vampire Count armies. We are doing our best to grow the warmaster game where we live!!!

Finally I've got some more to share, my speed-painted Harpies.

I'm not 100% happy with these, they're nice sculpts and they probably deserved a little more attention. That said, they were very quick to paint and I think they'll add a splash of colour to what is shaping up to be an otherwise rather samey army. The red wing tips are there to tie them in with the rest of the army a little.

PW - I think they look great, sometimes the simpler approach is better :)
Black Ed - You know what I think to these monstrosities already ;)

Well first post of the week.
This weeks output will hopefully be 4 units of centigors followed by the 3 remaining units of bestigors.

First off centigors.
Not too sure about these, but they will do until I can find an alternative.

After that I have 5 units of chariots, and then the hordes of lesser beastmen and that will be the army done.
Should take about another 4 weeks I reckon :)

I'm afraid that March, April and May are my busiest months in the garden. Since I still have a lot of landscaping to do (well digging up ferns and shrubs, clearing the earth of weeds, etc... Putting in four raised beds, filling those with clay from three cubic metres that I need to dig out for drainage and soil improver to turn the clay into earth), never mind seeds to sow, beds to maintain, finish and so on. This makes the work in the garden rather heavy, not just the odd bit of lawn mowing or plant propagation...

Anyway, this is basically likely to keep me away from my painting station unless the weather is really awful. Last year I repotted plants up until 3am using the outside lights, I don't think I'll go to that extreme again, apart from anything else I need to get up early every weekday morning to get the kids to nursery...

I will still try to get some things painted though, but any Golden Demon ideas are definately going to have to wait to next year, something I seem to say every year...

And a group shot of all 4 of them.

Also managed to prep and undercoat 5 units of chariots and tuskigors.
They will probably get done next week.

Finally got the first unit of chariots ready, the second one only needs some basic am last minute corrections.

I have to say this is my personal miniature nightmare. I hate that thing from painting to assembly. The horses and crew are fine with me but the wagons, god I hate them. :) Thats why I got a little sloppy on them but sometimes its better to be sloppy than never to finish.

The idea behind the black horses is that the horses pulling the chariots are from a different breed than the white/grey horses for the riders.

I like the black horses.
Along with the colour scheme.

Just seen some really nice 28mm phoenix guard in red armour over on warseer.

Anything is better than blue and white  ;)

Kudos for the black horses - helps with the normal High Elf "too much white" syndrome!

Thanks guys, though they are not that original. I just figured that if I dont keep to the blue/white then black horses are not that big of a change. :)

And as promised chariot unit no.2

I actually like them alot more than the first unit. I guess I just got used to them, just like after visiting the hair-dresser it never fits, right afterwards. :D

This concludes my february entries, then lets get started with march.

Next unit will be the second unit of spearmen, Ill be off, searching some runes/symbols for the shields....

Greetings!

I remember from 4th edition High Elves army book for Warhammer, that black steeds supposed to be "evil-spirited" and as such never used by HE. On the other hand, the same story said that they were often the target for Dark Elves raids. DE stole the black steeds and used them as mounts in Dark Riders units.

@Guthwine: I like your colour scheme and I am looking forward to see those spearelves of yours. I am especially interested in the shields desing. :)

I have now done the flesh, hair, wood and metal on my 3 regiments of halberdiers - about half way there I reckon!
Robes and detail (flames etc) and basing to do. Will post piccys when they are finished. I suspect it will be another week or two though.

Another slow week for me.
I manages to finish off modelling and undercoating my chariots and shaggoth.
Just waiting for the horkuns to turn up and I will start painting.

So in the meantime I have been gettin gmy chaos horde ready for sale.
This included rebasing a lot of them for consistency, touching up a few units and painting a dragon and 4 units of warriors.

Here is the resulting 3000 point list (minus 2 units of harpies pics to follow).
The colour on the dragon is not as vibrant/contrasting in the pictures as it is in real life :(

Post by: MrMarkRelf on March 24, 2010, 08:42:29 PM
Boy, It seem like a long time ago that I posted my semi painted units.

With the ravages of work, I will get finished this lot about the time that I retire !

However, see attached first 2 units of Araby Spearmen, as you can see I am using the shield colours to differentiate between units.

Currently on bowmen, which I really hate because of all the fiddling around with individual figures.

I have put self adhesive felt sheet under each unit which helps them to stay on slope.

Everyone else is well ahead so I must start getting the muse on a more regular basis !
