Title: Tale of Warmaster Painters II: April...
Post by: pw on April 02, 2010, 10:25:53 AM
Good grief! It's already April. My TOWP has suffered from some commission work I took on for some Blood Bowl Skaven, they've just been varnished so hopefully next week will see a little more Warmaster painting going on. I'll post a picture of my BB stuff to verify this pathetic excuse once the static grass is on.

It looks like I'm not alone in neglecting my WM painting!

Yes, it seems as if we all burnt out in the first couple of months!

I have in total for my Empire army: 6 regts of halberdiers, 6 regts of crossbowmen and now 3 half finished regts of flaggelants.
I have been distracted by adler 10mm napoleonics this month.

I intend to try and finish the flaggelants this month and make a start on my characters.

Well, work started consuming my time -- 60 and 70 hour weeks since January.   :-\
The upside is that I am still employed.

And I am trying my hand at sculpting, which takes longer than I thought.

Right now I am working on some ideas for Hounds of Tindalos, which will be my daemon hounds.  I also have some ideas for daemon steeds and chariots.  I also have a unit of daemon swarm to sculpt up.

So between less time and longer creative process, I'm getting less done.

Besides, the weather here was wonderful this past weekend -- 75 degrees F, something like 20 degrees C, sunny, no snow on the ground.  It was too nice to stay inside!

Yeah after a good start with the spearmen, I hardly got to work on them the past few days.

So here is at least a (horrible quality sorry) WIP Shot:

Very very nice Guthwine!! The banner recall me the japan raising sun.

The colours red/white fit perfect with the rest of your army. Very good work and high quality (as always :) )

I painted a teeny-tiny bit of black on my Romans last week. Literally tiny, just repainting the black on one single figure after the metals were finished...

I do hope to get at a minimum four units of legion finished by the end of May, and ideally a unit of cavalry and auxilia. Anything more than that and I'll be very happy indeed, and a tad bit surprised...

Slow week for me too.
Epic/FWC and BKC have taken my time.
Just painted 4 units of harpies (visible on my project thread).
Started my chariots, but doubt I will get all 7 units done this week.

My time sap is of course the garden, and now my new allotment plot. And of course at the moment it's the Easter holiday, so visiting my parents took up the bank holiday weekend, and of course I've got the kids at home with me for two weeks so getting anything done during the day just ain't happening.

On the upside, I have got a heck of a lot of onions in the ground, and the banana and bird of paradise plants that I'm growing from seed are doing very well. The tomatoes are a bit leggy though, probably because of poor light during March...

My excuses are, as ever, multiple if unconvincing. Right now I'm at a conference in Cleveland and before that I was distracted by these BB Skaven:

In the near future I plan to be distracted by some Incursion figures that I've promised to paint, and the 1500 pts of Imperial Guard that I need to paint for a small campaign I'm running. That said, I'll be packing up some Warmaster stuff to take to Germany next week so hopefully another unit might get finished.

WHOA!
A whole week and no one posting...
Has this project gone the way of the dodo ???  ;)

I hit a bit of painters block (30 units and 4 troop types from the end of an army project is never good for one's head) and other hobbies and holidays have interfered with my usual output.
That being said, my epic are looking great, my WW2 10mm british arrived today and I remember now why I love magura rim brakes  :-*

Well here are my delayed offerings
1 unit of herdkin, decided to use n scale trees to help differentiate between very similar infantry models.

8 units of chariots.

Now just 9 units of herdkin and 9 units of beastherd and I am done :)
If anyone knows where to get small 10mm scale trees from cheap in the UK, I would appreciate the info :)

As every I'm amazed, if we divided your output across the rest of the 'Talers' we'd probably be about on track! Those beastmen look cool, perhaps one day we could arrange a game, it'd be great to see these figures in the flesh and to meet the painting-machine behind them. If I'm right that you're based in Sheffield then you're a pretty easy train journey away.

I'm thinking the tale has gone myself although, to buck the trend I'm in the middle of painting up some of my Chaos stuff. I'm trapped on the wrong side of a volcanic cloud though so I can't get home to base them up ready for pictures (and for me the basing seems to bring them to life so I'm loathe to share pre-based pictures). That said, here's my Wizard dude, awaiting some final shading on the base and looking rather washed out from the flash:

Packed away in the painted but unbased box I've also got a unit of Chaos Warriors (a nice easy unit to paint) and a unit of Chariots (again, nice and easy). As of tomorrow I'll be painting a unit of Chaos Marauders - they're possibly the nicest unit of WM toys that I've seen so far but they look like the very devil to paint... Expect an update in a month or so!

EDIT: Does the Magura comment mean you're a mountain biker? If so I'll gatecrash your next painting session on a bike with a box of WM toys strapped to my back!  ;D

Nice sorceror.
You are right the marauders are great models.
Not that bad to paint if I am honest.
You are right I am in the SY area and yes magura does mean I used to ride :)
But as an old no fear t-shirt I once owned said ' the older I get, the better I was'  :'(

Azrael: Awesome work!  I want to see them in person also!

PW: That sorcerer looks great!

I will post pictures tonight.  I have 9 hounds of Tindalos sculpted, and am a good way toward finishing the sculpting of 3 Millisaurs.  I will also post the failed attempts of the hounds.

I'm just not sure that the Hounds will photograph well, but I'll give it a go anyway.  It's not like any of Lovecraft's heroes had good pictures of what they saw, so why should my pictures be any different?   :P

PW: The sorceror is fantastic! I like the also the stone :)

Azrael: What I had to see that I have not said yet. Impressive, and the quality of your paint is awsome!

Thanks for the nice comments, it certainly helps keep me in the mood for painting WM (there are a lot of other projects vying for attention!).

I've just finished a test strip of Chaos Marauders and thought I'd share them now. Azrael was completely correct, they were actually very nice to paint, perhaps because they're so large (they stand as tall as the Chaos Warriors). The only difficulty was knowing when to stop painting as they really cry out for detailed attention.

Here's a picture of how they look so far:

They look great.
I found I kept missing bits i.e. flesh or fur, but not the trauma that some people say they are.
I have some more to paint but they are in witn my to do albion army and I am quite looking forwar to them.

I uploaded some new pictures of what I've been up to.  I uploaded pictures of reject designs as well as pictures of the Hounds I like and some giant worms (without riders).

Here's a sample:

Black Ed: I just recieved a science fiction pack from pendraken, the reference SF31 small running bugs, are worms and nasty insects. Maybe it could be interesting for your army (although I see you have a great swam bases). Maybe it could help.

Thanks for the kind words. In response I've got another strip of them finished and the other four are now being batch painted to match.

I really like the shields, and the beard of the marauder

Funnily enough, the beard is my favourite bit of the stand too! I've decided that most of these marauders will have similar coloured hair as a result.

@BlackED: More good stuff, your GS skills are great and going over your work so far I'm particularly inspired by your dynamic bases.

jchaos:  Can you share some pictures?  I'd love to see what they loo like!

pw:Those marauders look very nice!  I agree with jchaos -- the beards and sheilds look great!  (Can you say a few words about the beard?  I want to try it at home.)  Thanks for the compliments!  When you said 'dynamic bases', which ones did you like the most?

The great thing about the 'Tale' is that it keeps me inspired!

Loving the worms.
I have 9 units of beastman prepped but just cannot get round to painting them.
I have been ill this week and have then been distracted by 6mm stuff.

@BlackEd: the bases i like most are your mini dioramas with guys fleeing from the horrors, really fun stuff. As for the beard, dead easy - it's a scorched brown base coat, vermin brown highlight and then tausept ocre. Finally a little bleached bone for the extreme highlight.

And finally, my basing is done. As you can see the glue wasn't dry when I took the pictures, and perhaps the grass deserves a trim but I couldn't wait to take the pictures. Here you go:

Sorceror:

Warriors:

Chariots:

Marauders (2 stands to go):

And the army shot (these guys are set up ready to batter some Dwarfs tomorrow night):

I've got to finish three units of Marauders and that's my 1000 points done. The it's time for the second 1000 points, and on that topic, does anyone have any spare Chaos warrior standard bearers from the command pack? I'm going to need a couple more for my next units of chariots.

New worm!

I'm working on 5 more.  Two more in this pose, 3 in a lower pose.  I'm still trying to think what the riders would look like!

Personally, I would prefer an elaborate "howdah" with ropes or chains or a ladder swinging from it!
If you have seen the latest Clash of the Titans - look at the giant scorpion riders!

(and before I'm flamed, yes I know the latest version isn't as ggod as the original!)

The last weeks i had big problems keeping my motivation up. I din't paint anything undead which I need to get some demo games running. I only managed to finish two units of high elf archers I wanted to field in a small tournament. So I hope the motivation comes back soon.

@ Guthwine:

I admire your work. Crazy how you paint the shields of the HE Spearmen. I would already fail at thinking of a nice design. That's why my Elves only got the generic colour scheme. Keep up the great work.

Nice work on the elves, to my mind painting two units of infantry is a big deal and those look great.

The most I could come up with this week was my Chaos Spawn Fenbeast. Here he is:

EDIT: he looks a bit of a mess in this picture!

Fenbeast and Elves are pretty cool :)

Regarding my own production, real  life wnet thought the job and did a single unit of archers that I've not finished basing :(
And Mai will probably not be better due to various other stuff to complete...

But June will se my coming back on track! Promised.
