Title: [WM] Skaven army WIP
Post by: barnEbiss on April 04, 2010, 10:25:11 PM
I just about have my first pack of skaven painted up then I need to paint their bases and base them. I have redone the weapons on the one strand so they are not as shiny and match the front row.

Here are some pics of how they look!

They look lovely. As an owner of lots of unopened blisters of skaven (currently painting empire) can you give any tips on how you did them?

chaos black undercoat then brush beast brown. the weapon shafts are painted skull white and then a thin beast brown waterd down with water to the point of almost a wash is applied and stains the white a light light brown this is the same also for the shields.

Great ... there aren't much Skaven armies out there, but your bunch of rats will frighten other armies to death (I know what I'm talking about :D)

Keep on happy painting.
Greetings from another horned-rat slave!

Thanks Petz :) I am trying hard to make my rats look good. I would be very grateful for any tips you would have on painting the skaven clothing.

I plan for some of the other ranks to use graveyard earth for their cloth to give a muddy colored cloth.

Give them all a wash of devlan mud to tone down the colours.
When I did mine, I wanted each unit to be identifiabale, but didn't think brown was the answer.
So I used bright colours and then applied the devlan mud wash.

Hope this helps.

My rats only wear new clothes. They don't like dirt and keep away from mud. So the things they wear are clean (which means I didn't apply any weathering effects), so I just made a few layers of colours without washes, inks, etc.

But sure, weathering and dirt would fit to the skaven fluff. The only problem I wanted to avoid is, that bec. of the masses of fur and wood, these miniatures have brown as their main colour. I didn't want to increase the percentage of this colour when you look at the whole army. So I kept my fingers off washes and inks - bright colours look far better on the battlefield.

Greetings
Peter

what colors would you recommend for the cloth? I used codex gray on some of their hats and I think they look good with the gray. I want to have four seperate colors for cloth that I use so I am going to use a darkish red and grayish whites and also tans and perhaps a yellow on some of the clothes but not sure how well yellow would fit for the skaven. let me know what you think..

I dont want to use two bright of colors but I also want to have enough of color so my rats our not all brown as you said with their fur and also the wood.

Also I contacted GW today and I talked witht the sales rep, he could not find my order for the minis I orderd last year but he said he would send the stands free of charge for my skaven that were missing from my blister I told him I would go ahead and order another blister of skaven clanrats since GW was being so helpful and sending the strands free of charge so I would be able to have six strands of skaven all together.  once I get these painted up I will get a blister of the stormvermin and then start getting some of the HQ units.

Use combination of yellow and orange for clothing. I even used a very light grey (almost white) for my plaguemonks, a wash with Armypainter will dull it down plenty, and using green on the belts and pouches still gives a nice result.

Yes, using yellow and red sounds nice ... I tried that too. But you'll reach the point where you think "Hey min. 32 units in 2000pts ... there must be many red and yellow tones".
Although green doesnt fit bec. of the meanings calmless, etc. I didn't see a way around other colours. I suggest you NOT to take blue. Purple fits in quite well too in my army.

In general:
Red - aggressiveness
Yellow - surreptitiousness
Purple - furtiveness
...

I tried blue once on another skaven mini but it just did not look right until I gave it a very dark blue wash. when I think of skaven I think darkish colors and drab colores of lighter color's..

Also I always wonderd if Skaven cloth fabric is made from the spun fiber of black corn that grows in the marshes of skaven blight.

got my replacement unit stands today and a new blister of skaven clan rats.  this blister has two warp throwers and one  posion wind goblet throwers. my first blister I got only had 1 warp thrower and one poison goblet throwers.

I am just wondering if there are any advanced roles for these special units. and would it be game legal to build a unit of say only poison goblets or warp throwers and not any of the other clan rats. just wondering if anyone has ever done this.

I have alt units of these.
I also made up some house rules to use them.
But more often than not I just use them as proxies  :)

Actualy went the other way around !!    I snipped all my ratties in 2-rat strips and mingled them together. So my clanrat units are a wild bunch of mix-and-match stands that may incorporate ratswarms, jezail, warpthrowers etc (usualy you will see the wt on one side of the stand, and the ratsies bunched together on the other side.

Pictures are due I guess...

I would be very interested to see what others have done with the Skaven. My idea was also to clip off and concentrate the fire throwers/globadiers as seperate units just to add some variety. I have 16 packs of clanrat (I only ordered 12 but received 16 - I'm not complaining!) and the amount of 'specialist' strips you get in a pack seems pretty random. I have also thought about using different fur colour combinations to represent different clans/brigades. I need to save black for the storm vermin of course but I am thinking of doing at least 2 fur colours for each stand to break up the sea of brown effect.

Almost have my last strand painted from the first blister pack. got the other glued to their bases and bases painted. I must say they look rather good once all painted up and ranked in a row on their bases :D all the hard work of painting the tiny details makes them look much better :). I will post some pics as soon as I finish last strand am hoping to have all their weapons and shields painted today.

Started cleaning off the second blister of Skaven clanrats and getting them ready to be glued to strips and primed with base coat.

I also today orded a blister of skaven PMonks and a ratswarm blister.

Once I get these painted up I will order a Skaven Command blister pack.

They look really nice to me. As a bit of constructive critism I'd say that the bases would benefit from some love (and I know I sound like a broken record here!). With the rats painted so nicely they really deserve better basing to hide the 'strips' and offer a less uniform appearance. That said, the brown rats stand out very well against the green bases so I'm not sure I'd go for an 'earthy' base with them but certainly something could be done pretty easily to show off your paintwork.

Oh, and I agree with Lex, stick the images into the thread if you want to show your toys, many people (me included) tend to scroll past links.

Definitily makes me looking forward to see more rats from you, but as PW said try some base materials to make the ground look better. Everything else is pretty nice for a mass army :)
And also motivates me to paint some of my own rats again, still have enough work to do.

Keep 'em coming.
Greetings,
Peter
