Title: 3 way battle. Snotlings, Marienburg and Undead
Post by: Duppe on April 08, 2010, 10:51:54 AM
2nd battle of a new campaign. The post battle of my (snotling) previous game gave me a mordheim map, fake of course. My two opponents decided that we should play a game of "The lost prince". With the slight mod that the prince moved last so that no one would have the advantage of knowing which way he was going.

The lost prince was really lost down in the cellars connecting the two sides of the city. The snotlings and the undead started in two corners while the marienburg started in the middle of the opposite side. Each corner team had the advantage of being close to the way down to one end of the cellar while the marienburgers were rather close to both, allowing them to see which way the prince was going, and to meet him.

The first round didn't offer any real action. Everyone was running to the nearest exit from the cellars. The prince ran towards the side of the undead.

The second round did offer a lot of action though. The two snotling scouts was marchblocking the marienburger. With the fast dire wolf and two ghouls in combat with a swordsman. A dire wolf down in the cellar to block the snotling mobs coming the other way. As it went though there wasn't to be a hand to hand fight this turn either. A snotling shoota team with a blunderbuss crept up on them and fired. It was nasty. Of the four people in the fight he managed to reach three. And very soon they were all dead. A dire wolf, a ghoul and a swordsman. Left standing was a ghoul with no one to hit. The marienburgers had taken a stand in a house and were shooting all they could at the vampire, managing two wounds but only knocking him down. Upon seeing a dire wolf coming down to the cellars the prince went back towards the snotling side of town.

For the third round the snotlings charged, down in the cellar the dire wolf charged a mob, on top another mob charged a swordsman together with a runt. Another runt was charged by a swordsman but luckily he had two friends (runts) who helped him out (That's the beauty of multiplaying, countercharges). On the other side the marienburgers charged the ghoul standing from the previous fight. The vampire went down to the cellar together with the necromancer. The shooting was a disaster from the marienburgers with no wounds. Amazingly the swordsmen fighting the snotlings didn't do anything while the mob slayed one and the other one failing his all alone test fled. The dire wolf managed a wound on the mob but when they fought back he was dead.

For the fourth round the undead had to roll for a rout test but managed to do so. The necromancer took the prince in custody while the vampire blocked a charge by the mobs. But the mobs failed their initiative test so they didn't spot anything. Up on top the marienburger captain charged a dreg, the captain was then countercharged by two zombies who finally made it into the fight. By that time a second shoota team with a blunderbuss had made it around a corner and aimed.. a mob and a runt charged the swordsmen that previously fled. the necromancer moved away from the mobs towards the exit while the vampire continued to block the small doorways. He was then charged, he won and the mob was stunned. up on top the marienburgers had finally drawn first blod from the snotling by killing a runt while shooting at him. the 2nd blunderbuss shot wasn't anyway near as spectacular, hitting four, killing a zombie. the swordsman that previously fled was killed by the mob. The marienburger captain didn't manage to do anything but get himself killed.

After that both the Undead and Marienburger teams routed. Leaving the snotlings with one runt ooa and a prince to deal with.

Post battle was a succes for everyone except the undead who lost roughly 100g and the two others lost nothing in the end.

I think i'm going to buy myself a new wheelo...

cheers!

Lucky the Undead routed or else it sounded like they would have had the game in the bag.

Very, very nice terrain. I want! ;D

You mentioned counter-charges. Do you play Chaos on the Streets rules for multiplayer or have you house ruled your round sequence for multiplayer games?

Sorry about that.. We were at a gaming convention during the easter where my friends and i tried to give as many people as possible a chance to play mordheim, get them to see the beauty of the game. The hardest thing wasn't people that had never played a game related to warhammer. Remembering the real rules. That's really hard. Same now, didn't even think about it when i wrote.

Our system regarding multiplayer is pretty easy, and works really well (according to us). It's much faster when you're a lot of players. For every turn you roll an initiative. the highest scoring starts with recovery and then in falling initiative order everyone proceed with their recovery/ then their movement/shooting/hand to hand. New turn - new initiative.

This speeds up the game, perhaps not needed when you're 3 players but when you're six or more.. (we played with 8 ). But it also means that if someone charged you, some of your guys might be in range for a charge they otherwise couldn't (i.e a countercharge) because it was too far/couldn't see.. Though, the initial charger counts as charging even those that charged him. This in order to still gain the advantage of charging first.

Makes everything different, whole new tactics.

Thank you very much.. It's a very different game when you add the extra dimension with houses that stretch 4-5 floors.

Btw. I was doing my best to get the pics to appear in the text but failed, what did I do wrong?

Best regards
Robert

We have house ruled our round sequence for multiplayer games too.

1) Everyone recovers.
2) Roll to determine order of moving.
3) Everyone moves in order of rolls.
4) Roll to determine order of shooting.
5) Everyone shoots in order of rolls.
6) Close combat.

This has greatly sped up multiplayer games and allows counter charging also similar to your method. We are considering having two close combat rounds at the end but that would slow things down a bit and we always find ourselves time poor.

...

I don't know know how to embed images within the post itself and not have them all grouped at the end.

So basically we've seen the same problem and came up with very similar solutions. Playing multiplayer with more than three people was a very slow process, almost a little bit boring to be honest. Sitting, waiting for five other players to finish.

I think it's better to skip a second hth and treat it as one very big instead. Our largest combat ever counted 12 models with charges and countercharges, it was great fun! Though my Witch Hunters lost in the end.. Well well... Does every gaming community have that one guy who can roll dices like a god?

Yeah. I don't think that we'll end up with the second round of HTH. My goodness... 12 miniatures in one wild close combat!
