I opened this thread to post my new work in one place. My army threads in the painters tale got too confusing the more armys I started to paint. For tonights battle for the worldwide wm campaign I painted the high elf dragon and a bolt thrower unit. Let's kick some dwarves butt!

Nice work, the images are a little dark though :(
I can't remember whose empire you are in, but make sure you stomp on those dwarves :)
-
The dragon seems awsome! a little dark to enjoy the details. Good luck in your battle!
-
Yes you are both right. I hear this not for the first time. I was to lazy to get another lamp from my home office room. Everytime I have to unplug the lamp and fiddle the cord behind the desk. I hope I remember your comments next time to give me the will to handle the cable and get better results.... :) Thanks for the feedback!
-
@Azrael: Doubleclickhere is in your empire.
-
@ spiritusx:
Very mindful of you. Thank you.
@ azrael:
It didn't really come as you wished me and I planned but you can read the battle report that will come soon....

The last few weeks I finished more minis completing my undead army for the moment. The new units increase my armysize to about 2.4k.
9 Skeletons
6 Archers
3 Chariots
4 Cavalry
1 Sphinx
1 Bone Giant
2 Carrions
2 Skull Chukkas
2 units of Bone Throwers
1 Tomb King
4 Liche Priest
1 Liche Priest on a dragon
With the latest painted units I tried gloss and then matte varnish instead of only matte to make the paint job more durable as I heard. Now I'm not happy with the glossy look. You can specially see it on the red bone giant parts and on the infantry banners. I used only a "thin" (whatever that means) coat of vallejo gloss varnish followed by two matte layers of vallejo/gw. All varnish was brushed on (I'll never use a spray can again. That killed 10 units of high elves) and diluted about 50/50 with water. How can I get rid of the glossy look? I also tried undiluted matte varnish to kill the shine. Can anybody help me please?
Here are the pics.

Very nice army! The gloss actually doesnt look that bad on the pics.
Will we see the undead at the eurogt or will it be the high elves?
-
Great work, loving the dragon and bone giant especially.
As for the shire, I always use dullcote spray and I am very choosy about the days I spray.
Like you I lost a load of high elves to a damp day :(
-
I use Mattlock Marabu and it is really good.
As far as I know (I did it and works for me) --> apply mat vanish over the shiny figure and the shines disapear. I understand that you try this before... and did not work. mmmh maybe try again?
-
Thank you guys for the comments. I'll google for the Mattlock Marabu and see if I can get further advice somewhere. It's just a matter of taste I guess and I don't like the wet look. I hoped I could kill that with matte varnish. Next time I just skip the gloss step.
@Guthwine:
I'm still undecided. The undead are my new army but my heart is still beating for the high elves. I love the high elf theme and the sculpts are so beautiful. And don't say I want to compensate my lack of skill with the Ld10 General. ;D
-
if you try matlock, tell us your experience. (I also dislike the shine look, and every time I varnish I do it with some uneasy felling)
-
Some more yellowish pictures. But this time I used two lamps. It must be the camera I guess. :)
Soon I don't have to fear broken spear tips anymore.

This time I didn't use any gloss varnish but even more matte layers. ;) I think I'll stick to that procedure as I'm happier with the matte result and don't have the will to experiment with new varnishes.
-
The paint is awesome!!
I will try to paint my phoenix guard "copying" your colors ... but not yet, I should paint following my "do do list"
-
@jchaos79
Thank you. I basically copied the paint scheme aswell... ::) It's from the regular Warhammer Phoenix Guards. Pics are on the GW Site. Just with the feathers I had to "improvise".
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work! What's next on your workbench?
-
Maybe today I will finish some historical arabs. In my workbench have some blisters of fantasy and a almhoade & chistian kingdom armies (trying to recreate Las Navas de Tolosa battle 1212). When finished I will reuse this two armies to build up fantasy araby and bretonian painting a few more units and characters. That is my main plan for 2011.
Far future is a daeomon army and expand chaos and high elves with the special units.
what is your To do list?
-
This should keep you busy in 2011. :) Right now I'm expanding my high elves a bit. I don't like some minis anymore because they were the first I painted. So there are 2 Archer units on the workbench and a bit of everything will follow. Next I'm going to paint my Empire army. My plan is to paint a playable army 1000p+ in 2011.
-
wow!!! your figures just get better and better. I love the high elf dragon, then i liked the undead army..... but the pheonix guard is jaw dropping amazing.
I'm very impressed with your painting ;D great work
-
Yesterday I finished two units of high elf archers. Here they are:
-
Good looking minis you got there. I like your bases quite a bit as well.
When you based your Tomb Kings what did you use for the ground cover? It looks like coffee grounds and looks like real dirt. I am preparing to base some Warmaster for the first time and i'm a bit worried about it as I know a bad basing job can break a good paint job. Any advice?
-
@graymatterblues
Thank you. I think basing is almost more important than the paintjob itself. It can make bad minis look way better than the other way round.
For all minis I just used two types of modelling sand mixed together. One is quite fine (about 1/3mm) and the other one is about 1mm in diameter and looks more rocky. I think it's used as coal chunks in model railroads. Not sure anymore. After a black undercoat I painted it scorched brown, strong drybrush with bestial brown and light drybrush with bleached bone. The gras is summer gras by "Noch". The Elves got the same sand mix but just painted black, codex grey, fortress grey and white. The base edges were painted bestial brown. Ah, I almost forgot. I used a white wood glue/water mix 60:40 and a little bit of dish detergent for the sticky job. Hope I could help you.
Here's a pic of my sand box.

Two weeks ago I painted some additional units for the Euro GT.
The general with his silver helm escort leading a unit of Reaver Knights into battle.
A battery of deadly 3+ bolt throwers ;)
-
Very nice, they look even better in real life!
3+ bolt thrower? I only see two. :P
-
very nice work
-
they look even better in real life!
I got it. You are also complaining about my bad photograph skills. :)
-
Yes, great advice. Especially your color choices. I am basing my units over the next few days and hope to have some pictures by the end of the weekend. Thanks for the help!
-
Finally I finished some chariots and more eagles. Both units were fun to paint as they are way faster to finish than reavers or silver helms.
-
nice work.
Especially the bright colours on the chariots.
-
Very nice, great work on the white horses!
-
Thanks for the nice comments guys!
the bright colours
are due to the new photo studio I own. I spend some money and time and installed my own high tech studio. Here it is.
It's basically a box with three windows covered with white baking paper to spread the light of a lamp.
I also finished the bases of some fresh painted silver helms and put them in the box. Here's the picture.
-
sweet :)
I toyed with a light box last year, but other things got in the way.
This however may be the solution ;)
-
great! that improve a lot the quality of the pic!! (If you allow me to mention it, your first pics posted here (undeads) where too dark, and now you have reached a perfect light balance)... )should I learn from you!
-
I've been working on one of these myself. I have it finished even but can't get good shots yet which must have something to do with my camera settings. Guess I need to find my manual!!!
-
I'm happy with the box as it gives me more constant results than before. Before the box the pics were yellow or dark or kind of pale and needed the right light which I never really found out. With the box there is still some variation but way less. The chariots and eagles pictures were taken outside with daylight. The silver helms were taken inside with my desk lamp and the camera flash. So I'm still experimenting but at least I'm happy.
It's great to hear that you guys also have one at home. I think everybody should. Here's a link to the DIY.
http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html
I'm looking forward to seeing your shots made with or without the box.
-
Oh yeah, thats alot better! Now we can admire your miniatures in all their beauty!
Im off, making my own lightbox now. :)
-
Thanks Guthwine. Enjoy building your box. It was fun working on something different being bigger than 10mm and you don't have to be very precise either.
-
Yup. That guy has a great tutorial on his DIY Macro Lightbox. I have a link to that page on my blog myself.
-
I have a link to that page on my blog myself.
I think that's where I found the link. :) While surfing your blog. Thank you very much!
-
Ha! Well glad I could help. I was planning a post on my blog on how mine turned out as well but until I find my manual and determine if it is my camera settings or the box, or the lights I am using that are producing the not so good picture effects I don't want to that. So it will probably still be a week or two.
-
Finally did that post on my light box. Its nothing really fancy but I did include some supports to clamp the lights to.
Here is the post on my blog along with a picture. http://somuchleftundone.blogspot.com/2011/05/macro-light-box-on-cheap-ish.html
-
@ graymatterblues:
Wow that box looks great with the three lamps in support. I'm looking forward to seeing some pics made by this box. I bet you get some good light and nice pics with the three lamps.
By the way: I like the light and the atmosphere of your picture of the light box. Did you have a bigger light box to take the picture of the "normal" light box? ;)
-
Today it's time for an update. I was so impressed by Vincents self made castle I also wanted one really bad. Thanks to his tutorial it was fairly easy. The only problem I encounterd was while making the negative of the stone wall. The first try I forgot to grease the styrofoam positive and half of the milliput remained stuck in the positive.... Doh! But with some grease and some new ordered milliput the second try went much better. I also found out that I can use my photo box as a storage box. Here's the result.
It still looks a little bit like barbie's castle but some grey paint should make it look more like a boy's toy. When I removed the castle from the box I also could take some pictures of my new elven infantry units.
For now I'm done with the elves except for some dragon princes (6 strips without the command strip :'() which are already primed. I'm going to paint them mostly blue and silver. After that some Averland or Ostland empire will follow. But maybe some chaos will be first because you can paint points quicker.
-
nice castle, and great work on the elves.
-
yep really nice, the light box (and you, of course) makes excellent pics
-
Thank you guys! I'll post more pictures when the castle or the fake dragon princes are done. :)
-
Great work on those swordmasters and great copy of the WHFB starter box banner. (at least I think it is) The spearman look equally great especially with that mounted commander!
Looking forward to see the castle in a more manly color. :D :P
-
"Pink? Pink? What's wrong with pink?
Seems you've got a pink kink in your think."
from Boundin'
...that rare hare of hope, the great American Jackalope...
-
@Guthwine:
Yeah, the banner "inspired" me a bit. I became desperate trying to paint the stupid halfmoon/ sickle type thing. I wish I had your creativity and didn't have to copy.
@ BlackEd
Hehe. That's a good one. I had to google this. Best I like the dancing scene, the Jackalope and the jumping gophers! Actually the whole short movie ;D
-
Oh I wish! :)
Dont tell anyone, but I steal my ideas from the high elf army book. :D
-
Glad to see my tuto have been usefull :)
Can't wait to see the fortifications painted!
I like the elven very much as well.
Great!
-
A little update of my work.
Some months ago I did these dragon princes. I am quite happy with them although the command strip is missing and the minis feel more heavy than the usual GW ones.
After these I didnt have any motivation left for painting. After quite a break I finally decided to start painting my empire minis as my next army. I hesitated quite a long time because I was pampered painting high elves and skeletons. Both armies are quick and easy to paint. But the empire guys with all these small detail like mustaches and quatered uniform patterns discouraged me from painting them. But reading some empire background fluff about the provinces gave me the much needed push.
So I decided for an Averland army. So far I almost finished the first unit of halberdiers. It will be a long way...
Some time ago I saw an article about WM special units and there were some pictures of self made empire greatswords in it. Immediately I fell in love with them. Since that I always had this thought of my own greatsword unit on my mind.

The greatswords look... great! I really like that building too. Is it a scratchbuild?
-
How nice are the greatswordmens!! really like them.
Averland painting is also great
-
Thank you for the nice comments guys! :)
I really like that building too. Is it a scratchbuild?
Yep it is. The article how it's done is in WarMag #12. It's called Warmaster architect. Here you can download the file as a zipped pdf:

Doubleclick: Those greatswords are nice! Do you remember where you saw the article for the self-made greatswords? I'm thinking about doing something similar.
Thanks!
-
Do you remember where you saw the article for the self-made greatswords?
This is the link to schwager's converted greatswords:
http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/fanatic/97gs.pdf
I'd like to say thank you to schwager for the great idea and for the really useful tips he gave me to do this conversion aswell.
edit: get some of these plastruct 0,5mm x 1,0mm plastic stripes and cut the swords out of them. Remove the halberds or Xbows with pliers and a file and leave a little bit as a sword shaft. Glueing the swords on the mini at two spots helps with stability (eg hand and feather/hat)
-
Hi mate, those Greatswords look great... much nicer than mine!
I'm glad I could offer some useful advice :)
Can't wait to see them all painted up.
-
The first 45 points are done! Only 1955 to go. I bet my next army will be chaos with mostly chaos knights and warriors....
I'm not sure about the 10mm bay leaves on the banner. Somehow they look funny, more like little worms. Maybe I'll over paint them black. Any ideas on how to paint them right or alternatives?
I also primed the greatswords, one more unit of halberdiers, 2 crossbows and one battery of cannons. This gives me some basic troops for 1000p.
@ schwager
Hi mate
Are you still down under or already back in the old world? I'm already excited about painting the great swords as next unit. Your first ones will always be the best no matter what golden demon comes around!
-
@ schwager
Are you still down under or already back in the old world? I'm already excited about painting the great swords as next unit. Your first ones will always be the best no matter what golden demon comes around!
Thank you, sir! Really appreciate you saying that :)
Great work on those halberdiers. Love the subtle colours, the base looks ace and the work on the banner is outstanding!
And yip, still down under... still thinking about returning to the old world, too, but not sure when yet.
-
Thanks for the nice words.
Yep subtle colours work better otherwise they look like clowns.
-
:o Ooohhh! Shiny!
I have always been torn between Averland and Carroburg, and finally decided for the Red&Black against the Yellow&Black because I don't really know how to make such a nice yellow. Pleas do a step by step when you paint your next unit. And I love the banner. It is actually easier to read from a distance than mine, as you went for a pattern rather than figures. Can you put up a closeup of the banner?
Thanks
(How cool would it be to have a civil war : the alliance of the North (Ostland and Talabheim) against Averland? You don't live in Indonesia, do you?
-
I don't really know how to make such a nice yellow.
It's basically iyanden darksun washed with the magic "makes everything look good" devlan mud wash plus highlights with 50/50 iyanden darksun/bleached bone. Here's the step by step on how to paint that Averland style. It's for Warhammer but leave out the unnecessary steps like several face highlights and it works fine for the 10mms. Guys get that devlanmud wash!
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=32309.75
Sure I can take some pics of the progress of my next unit.
Can you put up a closeup of the banner?
Yep I can also post some closeups. Although I always try to take pics from far away so you don't see the mistakes and that I cheat with the letters. :)
(How could would it be to have a civil war : the alliance of the North (Ostland and Talabheim) against Averland? You don't live in Indonesia, do you?
I would love to see your army in real life and have a battle but I think Germany is too far away....
-
A short update of my work. My second unit of halberdiers and the Averland Greatswords. Next will be some crossbows, a pair of cannons and a hero.

Great work.
The level of banner detail is certainly on the up on all recent warmaster projects :)
-
Those guys look really fantastic, well done!
Love the work on the banners, too.
-
>:(
All right. Now I want to do an Averland Empire army....
You'll burn in hell for this!
;D
-
Fantastic! Love the Greatswords. Excellent painting too, yellow is hard to do in Warmaster scale!
Dave
-
Azrael, schwager, Cobalt and David these feedbacks keep me motivated. Thanks a lot.
yellow is hard to do in Warmaster scale!
Yep. Normally that's true. But Iyanden Darksun and the wash is just the right combo for that brownish yellow. Painting the empire guys is much more fun and easier than I thought at first.
@ Cobalt:
A step by step of my next unit is in progress.
@ azrael:
But that's so time consuming I could have painted one more unit instead of the three banners.
A small addition to my army:
The captain of the Greatswords:

A pair of cannons:

-
Great paintings...
nothing more to say :D
-
Great stuff. I'm getting excited about painting some WM now (it's been a year or so since the brush hit the 10mm stuff). Seeing these fantastically detailed banners has got me wanting to try my own too, it's great to see the bar being raised in this way. Thanks for pushing things along!
-
@ Jurisch:
I hope you can see them on the battlefield soon.
@ pw:
Thank you! Good idea about picking up the brush again. I'd like to see more of your great Talabheimers and new banners for inspiration are highly appreciated. The banner competition is on! Just kidding. Afterwards I think it's crazy to spend so much time just for a "stupid" banner. But it's also crazy to play with small soldiers. Hehe.
As requested here's small step by step of my crossbowmen:
I use a mix of GW Citadel and Vallejo paints. They are exchangeable and there are several comparison charts around on the net.
First of all I glued the strips on wooden spatulas used to examine the throat. Before undercoating everything with black Citadel Spray I added some sand to the minis.
Next I painted the basic colours in the following order:
- first faces and hands with Vallejo Heavy Skintone to make to minis come alive
- metal parts bolt gun metal (drybrush on the chainmail, or you can fully paint it and use black ink)
- wood and leather scorched and bestial brown
- clothes in a quartered pattern iyanden darksun
- badges shining gold
- feather liche purple
- green band vallejo hvy green
I always leave a little bit of black between two adjacent colours so there is a better visual seperation for the eyes. Hopefully that's understandable.
Then there comes a strong wash with devlan mud which already gives the mini a good tabletop standard
(http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz197/docdomdom/DSC04127.jpg)
When everything's dry it's time for the highlights:
- for the skin I used a mix of bleached bone and hvy skintone (it got a little bit too bright)
- metal parts mithril silver
- leather parts snake bite leather
- yellow robes mix of iyanden darksun bleached bone
- black clothes and hair and beards codex grey
- gold badges mix of shining gold and mithril silver
- for the feathers and the green band I mixed the basic colours with bleached bone aswell
(http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz197/docdomdom/highlights.jpg)
The base was painted scorched brown, with highlights of bestial brown then graveyard earth and finally bleached bone
(http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz197/docdomdom/base.jpg)
Enjoy and please post your pics aswell and maybe a step by step so I know how you guys paint.
-
I really like those great swords! They came out really well!
-
Cool thanks for the tutorial. I have decided that my next 4 hallebardiers will come from Averland, I'll probably follow your steps.
I also really like your general. I like the fact a highborn decided to fight on foot, like a real man, in the middle of the pike blocks with his soldiers, instead of parading around on horseback. ::)
And then:
The banner competition is on!
Let it be known YOU started it! ;D
-
The tutorial is great and very useful!!
Those conversions are lovely, and the painting is fantastic. Good Work
-
Thanks again for the motivating words. Hopefully the tutorial gave some inspiration and I'm looking forward to seeing the results especially your Averland units Cobalt.
I also really like your general. I like the fact a highborn decided to fight on foot, like a real man, in the middle of the pike blocks with his soldiers, instead of parading around on horseback. ::
That was my intention. I liked the idea of the greatsword captain fighting with his men.
For him I thought about the special rule that he gives an extra attack when he's with the greatswords for 5p. Thats 5p less then usual but since it only counts when joining a weak infantry unit it should be ok for the risk you take.
How much should be the rule that once his unit of bodyguards is annihilated and instead of being killed too he is allowed to flee (fight his way back) and join another unit within 30cm?
I also found some unpublished pics of my 2 units of xbows on my camera. Here they are with a full shot of my small army (1 unit of halberds is missing in the pic)
This was the first banner I painted for the greatswords. But somehow it didn't work and I painted the other one. Maybe it's because there are too many small things on it instead of a clear pattern with large symbols like on the latest one with the crossed swords. But I'll use it with some halberdiers later.
-
Great progress, mate. Your army looks awesome so far.
Love the banner, too. :)
-
Wow, superb job on those units!
Kudos for the greatswords! I loved the look of the unit in the special units .pdf but was to scared (and lazy :D ) to even try that. Excellent work, looking forward to see them finished!

Today a new shipment of handguns arrived from Nuln via the River Aver.....

with your skills this job shouldn't be a problem. Actually this is a pretty easy conversion and it was my first. You only need a little bit of patience when glueing these little swords.
-
I'm really amazed that you chose for yellow and black so close together --- and on 10mm scale minis!
I remember as a child having terrible trouble trying to paint Bad Moon Orkz in Epic scale.
-
A little update on my latest work:
I finally painted my castle. The black acrylics didn't adhere well on the styrofoam and I had to do 2 or 3 undercoatings so you couldn't see the pink styrofoam anymore. After that the highlighting was a lot quicker.

Some scouts ride off for the daily patrol:
My first cavalry unit for my Averlanders. Now I already got 3 halberdiers, 2 XBows, 1 Handgunners, 1 cannon and 1 unit of pistoliers. Two more knights and two characters to go and i can field 1000 points of troops.

OK your fortress is amazing - it looks pretty labour intensive to do though... Would you say it's "worth it?" in the end?
Speaking for myself - I'd like to do something like that, but instead of walls of sieges, more just obstacles on a normal open battlefield.
And I love your new cavalry too - your banners are wonderful.
-
Wow. Very nice indeed.
-
great work dobleclickhere!
-
Thank you guys!
OK your fortress is amazing - it looks pretty labour intensive to do though... Would you say it's "worth it?" in the end?
@ Stormwind: looking back I think it was quite a lot of effort and I wouldn't do it a second time. I don't even want to think of doing all the work again like cutting and engraving the wallsections and making all the parapets. But when I actually did it was lots of fun, I saved a few bucks (compared to the Kallistra castle), I improved my terrainbuilding skills a bit and now I got a nice castle :) . So first time yes, second time no. So go ahead!
I am happy to add two more characters to my empire army. Another hero/general to command my cavalry ( the greatsword captain is for the infantry) and my first wizard. Now I got all the leaders I need for my 1000p armylist. There are only two units of knights missing. I think one will be some knights of the blazing sun as they fit well with my paint scheme and the Averland background.

Lovely! 2p coins being pressed into service again there I notice. =-P
Highlights on the mages robe and the feathers there are spot on!
-
They look awesome! That's gonna be such a cool looking army.
Really fond of the colour on the Wizard's horse, too.
-
I agree wizard is great painted!! congrat
-
Truly beautiful minis! I love the knights and excellent job on the shield freehands, they look spectacular.
I hope there will be an international event some time in the future to see them in person. :)
-
I appreciate the comments, guys. :D
@ stormwind: yep the fantastic 2p coins. I still got two left and I will save them for the perfect mini. Here in Germany you got to spend way more money value to get the same sized base :). But actually that wizard was based on some norwegian Kroner I found around my place. Also a pretty expensive base... :) King Harald forgive me.
@ Guthwine:
I wish I could paint that free hand but I've got to disappoint you. The shield's emblems are just part of the mini ;D
By the way. I changed my nick back to my regular online one. The "doubleclickhere" was just made in a stupid mood when I was new on this forum and didn't expect to ever become an active member.
-
Ha ha, you Europeans should post in the Trades section and ask to be sent some 2ps in the post!
Speaking for myself, I'm planning on using the 25mm round Warhammer 40k bases or the Flames of War small bases for the longer command strips that don't fit. I know that might sound perverse but I actually want my heroes to look "higher" from the battlefield.
-
Ha ha, you Europeans should post in the Trades section and ask to be sent some 2ps in the Post!
That would be a great business idea.
I saw the FOW bases with pugwash's empire army and liked the look very much.
-
@ Guthwine:

Never knew they had those on there. :) But still expertly painted nonetheless.

The last days I painted sample stands for my next two units. One unit of regular Averland Knights and some Knights of the blazing sun. I'm quite happy with the look espacially the blazing suns. But somehow I think there's too much purple on the knights. Should I better change the banner to a black and yellow one? What do you think?
-
Purple looks fine to me, 3 points bookending the strip front middle rear.
OK I'm trying to paint my reaver knights and I've got to ask - it seems all the time I keep finding tiny spots that I need to touch up with Chaos Black, or even just handling them at all seems to wear off some raised points back to base metal... Do you have any tips for me?
-
I like the purple one better, the color does a nice job breaking up the darker colors I think.
@Stormwind: Apply your basecoat generously or in 2 Layers that should help with the blank spots.
Some raised points do get some wear like speartips for example, if they are one the reins or something that shouldnt be that pointy try to file them down a bit before coating.
-
I think I will use both paint schemes as they are for my next units. Thanks for the input.
@ Stormwind: First I spraycoat my minis and after that procedure it's totally normal that some blank spots remain. Just use some diluted chaos black or as Guthwine already said do a second layer. And handle them with care ;)
-
While the forum was down I had some time to finish two unit of knights. This gives me the last troops I need for a nice 1000p empire list.
1 general
1 hero
1 wizard with the ring of magic
Infantry Block:
2 halberdiers
1 greatswords (halberdiers with the sword of might)
1 crossbowmen
Cavalry Wing:
2 knights
1 pistoliers
Missile Brigade:
1 cannon
1 handgunners
1 crossbowmen
I hope I can post some pics of the whole army soon. Meanwhile here are the two units of knights:
Knights of the elector count of Averland:

nice work! and great banners too

:o :o :o :o
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Can I send all my Knight units to you for painting? ;)
-
Thank you for the comments.
Can I send all my Knight units to you for painting? ;)
Yes you can. But first I have to paint my mountain of blisters . This will take about 100 years. ;D
-
Always a pleasure seeing your latest!
-
Impressive
-
Love the banners, another great looking unit!
-
They look great Dom. Should we ask CS to take down the forums so you can get to 2k? :P
-
Thanks again! :D
Should we ask CS to take down the forums so you can get to 2k? :P
Lol, I already got the next core troops for another 1k on my workbench and ready to be painted. But what's more of a distraction right now than the forum is Warmaster ancients. I found a gaming group in my area that play WMA. Now I plan to infiltrate them with an ancients army and convert them all to fantasy. :) Or maybe it happens to be the other way round. So with an ancients army on my mind I don't have much hope to reach the 2k of empire troops in the near future...

HOLY SHIT! Dude... serious skill. I'm jealous :o
-
I'm not exaggerating when I say these are the nicest Empire knights I have ever seen!
(bows head) "We're not worthy"
Dave
-
David and Ironpainter: That's so nice of you and makes me proud like a schoolboy. ;D
Ironpainter: Jealous? Just look at your undead and you see some serious skill.... Your shading is just unbelievable!
-
Hey, really nice :)
-
Wow wow, ... I have just seen another great two armies in this forum, and now i see these images...
The only pity is the army, i hate the Empire :-P (sorry for that)
-
Thanks Vicent and Kesseki.
The only pity is the army, i hate the Empire :-P (sorry for that)
No problem. Once the empire army is finished I got some more armies to offer. I got a huge pile of Chaos, O&G, Dwarves that awaits painting. You got the choice :D
-
I think we just have two different styles but yours should have the utmost respect!
-
The empire strikes back! Slowly but steady. This gives me the first part of the core troops I need for the next 1000 points. Next on the workbench are 2 units of xbows to make it a legal 2000k army later.

That's an honour to hear that from you. Somehow my empire paint scheme is very forgiving and well suited for that devlan mud wash. I am so happy with their look. Compared to them I am not very happy with my high elves and undead although at a first glance they seemed to be much easier to paint than the empire troops.
-
So sweet! The banners continue to amaze!
-
Spectacular!, how long do you take to paint an only unit at this level?
-
These look great, I think you've pulled off the trick of getting the models to look great from close up AND from a gaming distance. They're nice and bright without looking daft, fantastic.
I have a feeling I must respond to his unoffical banner challenge at some point - yours are stupendous.
-
I can't believe how well you've pulled off such a dark colour scheme... With yellow / gold in it... And it doesn't look grungy or messy.
-
Thank you guys.
how long do you take to paint an only unit at this level?
I would calculate 10h for a unit of halberdiers, 7h for xbows. That includes priming, varnishing and basing. I'm painting very slowly and could save an hour or two or even three if I sped up. But correcting small mistakes I only know of and that you wouldn't see from more than a foot also consumes time. :P But hey, these guys fight for me so they deserve a good treatment! For my next units I will try to check the time.
@banner:
The banner with the sword I already had in stock. It was the banner I originally painted for my greatswords. But somehow it didn't look mean enough for an elite unit. So I painted another one for them with two bigger swords crossed and had this one left for the halberdiers. That's why there are only 5 guys in the front row.
But this kind of banner painting takes too much time for me and now I'm going to stick with more simple patterns as they also give a great effect from far away like on the other unit.
-
Another awesome unit!
I don't have the skill to handpaint banners like yours, so I just paint them a simple, two colour scheme background e.g. half red/half white and then add a transfer (old warhammer transfers are great).
Keep up the good work!
Dave

Now it's time to bring my empire forces to 2000p. In July Jurisch is going to host a birthday tournament and there I want to field my 2k of Averlanders. There are only 800p missing but since I paint very slowly I've chosen a list which will bring me there very quickly. My 800p are:
1 pair of cannons
2 hellblasters
1 flagellants
1 steam tank
1 griffon
1 knights
1 pistoliers
Together with
5 halberdiers
4 xbows
1 handgunners
1 cannon
2 knights
1 pistoliers
Some characters and Magic items
this will be 2000p.
And here are the first results:

They look great Dom, I like the color scheme.
-
Love the flagellent skin tone!
-
Good painting Empire figures are always a pleasure!
-
Dom, how'd you do the basing?
-
Thank you guys. I wish I could get some more painting time to post more pics.
@ Dave: my basing was inspired by your style. :) I used army painter "grass green" flock and the grass tufts are from mininatur, a german company. I paint my bases scorched brown then graveyard earth and finally bleached bone.
-
lol, that's pretty much exactly what I do. I guess that's why I liked it. ;D
-
So this means everybody likes my army because it's made up of everybody else's ideas. :)
-
Here is my latest addition to my army.

those black cannons are great!
-
Artillery are looking good!
-
Docdom, your army is amzing! The quality of the painting is top-notch. I could stare at your Empire army all day, trying to figure out how you did it. I would love to see this army in person!
I wish I could paint like this!
-
Lovely colour scheme and very well executed!
For Karl Franz!!!!!!

Thank you for the nice words. Today I finished the steam tank and this boosted my army to a legal 1500p that I need for a small tournament tomorrow. There he comes...

That steam tank looks pretty good man, well done. Good luck in the tourney!
-
That's a nice, subdued yellow.
-
Yes this steam tank seem awesome, take advantage of it in your game. I really like playing this unit.

I had a lot of fun in the tournament with the steam tank. It supported my infantry, made a nice flank charge and soaked up lots of attacks.
And here is another model I just finished...

Superb stuff! I really like the basework of your units.
-
Really nice the yellow feathers. great job
-
How'd I miss this? Dom, those wings are awesome. Love the purple too.
-
I agree - lovely basing and AWESOME wings!
Dave
-
Thank you all. Only two cavalry units to go to get me to 2kp but there are some motivation issues....
-
what kind of cavalry, pistoliers or knights?
I put an image to keep your motivation high :)

Thanks Jchaos for the motivation. 😃 Yesterday I began painting the pistoliers and then there are some knights left.
-
The pistoliers are finished. Only some knights to go to reach 2000p!

Really nice! Almost there in the 2K... :)
-
Very nice. I'm really impressed with all the previous units too.
-
Thank you both! Hopefully the knights are done until the next weekend when there's Jurisch's three day campaign.
-
I finished the last two units just in time for the campaign last weekend. If I find some time I will post more pics and maybe a battle report.

Beautiful work! And are those Total Battle buildings?
-
Would love to see those Empire Troops in person, any chance of you and some of the other german players making the Warmaster playtest event in November?
-
@ Stormwind: yes, that's the prepainted town. It was our birthday present to the player who hosted the campaign. It plays very nice and I had a nice fight for it.
@ Lex: i would love to attend an international event again and meet all the guys again and get to know the others. But at the moment I don't dare to ask. 😃 I've just spent the last weekend with three days of intense Warmaster playing. I should wait a little bit. And the rest of the german community (2 guys) are also on this forum so they should know about this event. But I don't know about their plans.
-
it is not yet November ;-) and you can bring the boss along, Bergen op Zoom is a nice historical town and has SPA facilities..... and the Hotel is rumoured to be haunted.....!
-
Hi,
@ Lex Plannning to join your event. The total miniatures buildings are really excellent stuff! Thanks to the guys.
As always perfect paintings of Dotcom.
Cheers,
Jürgen
-
Excellent work! The buildings are beautiful!

Konrad Holzapfel looks certainly like a leader I would like to follow 8) Very well done, as always :)

Great painting! And good to hear that they're seeing battle too!

Hey! I've been thinking on this conversion too - it seems all the leaders on horse have helmets - do you have a WIP pictures of the conversion per chance? The head comes from the general on foot pointing with his finger, right?
-
Gorgeous *(snaps paintbrushes and throws them away)*
Beautiful colours and extremely detailed!

Sorry, haven't been here for a while. I don't have any WIP pics of the conversion but your guess was right. The head is the foot general's and horse and body come from the axe knight in the character pack. Just cut the head, file a bit and glue the other one in place. Very simple.
-
Hey Dom, glad you're back.
