Title: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: azrael71 on May 17, 2009, 08:09:29 PM
Never one to have an original thought here is my WM blog.
Recently started my Beasts of Chaos Army by painting up a unit of minotaurs.
I will probably keep the majority of the army slaanesh themed.
Aiming for a wide selection of troops with the possibility to field practically any mix of troops up to 2k (looking at 4k in total).
Models are by Eureka.

I will post some of my older work by army and also on request over the next few weeks.

Finally finished painting my converted slaaneshi chaos dragon.
Took me longer to decide how to do the legs than anything else.

looks awsome,

looking at the dragon I wonder to buy a chaos dragon to make a similar conversion. I put it in my to do list.

I have an vintage 28mm ral partha miniature from the Rune Quest range called "headhanger". Its a really nasty giant bug. My plan is to use it as a ram for the chaos in the sieges battles. Same rules as rams but is a living-stupidmineded-creature that only attack the buildings. Your conversion is in the mood of the line of chaos I will like to develop.

Thanks for share your ideas,

I have recently been working through minis for the Warmaster trial armies book.
This week I have been working on Chaos Dwarves.
The models are from Eureka's fabulous range, check them out.
The detail on these models is outstanding.
Just need to paint a sorcerer, a couple of heroes, a sorceror on a lammasu and a unit of chaos dwarves to be done.
I am going to use botfa goblins as hobgoblins.

Very Impressive Mick you've done a fantastic job on these I wasn't convinced about the Eureka Chaos Dwarfs but you've changed my mind and the bases are great would have never have thought of that. I like the axe swap on the Great Taurus hero.

Will you do me a favour and email a pic of the Gorgon directly side on I want to check something  ;)

@Dave, thank you. From you that is a very big compliment.

@Carrington, You are correct (I think) a friend gave them me to make my tzeentch daemon beasts from and I just found them again the other day along with the spare bits of the dragon.

Just working on some wood elf bits, including the new General/green man and a unit of dryads.
They may be ready this afternoon 8)

Very nice army!!

I particulary like the colour scheme and the bases with those streams of fire.

Wow, an army per week?

Latest update:
Been doing some more of my wood elves (only 6 units to go and the army is done).

New heroes from eureka.
I think I prefer this spellsinger to the bretonnian one I orginally did thanks to the cloack of leaves.

Since the BOFA Elven Cavalry is no longer available these models may make a nice alternative for the wild rider units.

Beautiful!

I love this range of figures, so original, and the color scheme is great!

The unicorn rider and the reindeer riders takes the wild/faerical mood of wood elves.

Another issue that I like is that wood elves became remakable different form high elves.

The models I had been waiting on arrived the other day.
RL is impacting hard at the moment so I am struggling to finish these off :(
Anyway here are a few of my heroes including my Lammasu.
Just a unit of warriors to go and this phase of the project is done.

I ran out of sorcerors so I will do another Lammasu with the correct model when I order my next batch and probably sell the one pictured here.
All models are based on or are solely made by Eureka miniatures.
The exception being the head of the lammasu which was kindly made by DaveC.
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: DaveC on June 14, 2009, 04:15:38 PM
Cool the Lammasu head is a good fit - not bad considering I didn't have access to a gorgon when I did it and I only spent half an hour on it. I always thought the warhammer one is little to big anyway. I assume you used one of castings of the head rather than the original for this one. Any chance of a picture next to the hero on Gorgon for comparison. The heroes are also very good although I think the Sorcerer might have got himself in a bit of bother there  ;D It occurs to me that a lava type pentagram might look cool under a sorcerer.

All made out of bamboo skewers and bits anf bobs out the bits box.
I did use army painter leather spray paint.
But at £9 a tin with mixed results I will be reverting to halfords black :(

Nice one. I like the golden robes (hope thats what you where going for!) and I take it you used metallics on the lightning to get that effect. Add a little white dot to the top of the gems to make them look like they're catching the light. The stone pillar is great very natural looking

I still have one of these to paint some day. His mate got butchered to make Gonzo Lord of Tzeentch:

The flames where done by layering liche purple over black then adding more and more Warlock purple then add fortress grey to highlight.

Normal Flames can be done by going from Black to Red Gore then Mechrite Red, Blood Red, Blazing Orange, Golden Yellow (I then use Vallejo Lemon Yellow) then add more and more white or reverse that if you like realistic flame effects.

Or cold blue flames would also work for Tzeentch.

Post by: azrael71 on March 26, 2010, 06:57:25 PM
Thanks for the hints dave.
The lightning was just white with purple wash over the top then I used dark purple/ice blue in different proportions to highlight up to ice blue then ice blue and white mix upto to white.
Then a quick touch up with the lighter citadel purple.

As for flames I have used that method before, tried it this time and it looks pants.
So I have washed the lot with red wash and will start highlighting later on.

Both together
(http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f364/mickmarriott/warmaster/chaos/DSCN8171.jpg)

Decided on bone armour and took Dave's advice about the gems.
I found the fire technique was enhanced by a couple of washes of red wash to deepen the effect:)

I was going to do the cloak hem pastel blue, but it sucked so pure white it stayed.

Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects

The way to deal with gems properly is to highlight the bottom corner, shade the top opposite corner and then add a white 'speck' in the top shaded corner. GW have been advocating this technique since as long as I can remember, I'm sure I read a 'how to' in the 'Eavy Metal' section of White Dwarf back in the early 90's when the Mk 7 Space Marines (the metal ones) were new and most of them had gems in the middle of their chest eagles. And of course the Eldar had become very gem-heavy with their soul-stones and suchlike...

Anyway, very nice, I really must consider painting my own at some point. After all I have had them since about a year before they got released, same with most of my Kislev stuff actually, and none of it painted, properly at least anyway...

Long time no paint.
The demise of the painters tale hasn't helped along with 3k of British in 10mm for BKC.
Thought they would be easy, the tanks were, but hit painters block and been up to my neck in work and nerf wars recently.
Anyway, they are done now and 8 units of albion slingers/bows are sat primed on the workstation ready for a bit of attention.
As well as making my pegasus knights.
Also toying with buying a 4k chaos force splitting into 2x2k forces, painting them and banging them up un eBay. But who knows.

Anyway here is my British Army.

So cool! even with spitfires (I guess).
Which ruleset are the army base for?

I love 10mm in every period
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: azrael71 on July 19, 2010, 09:04:20 PM
Thanks
They are spitfires, but they are useless as I already have air superiority in the 44-45 theatre.
They are based for the BlitzKrieg Commander (warmaster).

We have had a few games and it makes a nice change, but I have been playing as the Gerry's.
Not lost a game yet, so no doubt that is about to change. ;)

Only problem comes from your brain trying to combine rulesets.
If you think WM & WMA causes issues, try this :)

Hello Juergen,
Welcome to the forums.
Best to pop this sort of query in it's own thread, that way you will get more viewers ;)

But to answer your question eBay is probably your only hope.
You may try sentrybox or chaosorc (google), (there goes my sources ;)) but I think I bought the last few units from sentrybox 18 months ago.

They do fetch very high prices these days :( but they are very nice models, I prefer them over the wolf riders.
Good luck with your search.

Bit of a slow week for finished units.
I have only managed to complete one unit of Albion Slingers/Archers

But the other 7 units have their hair and skin done so they are about 50% done.
I have done 7 units of warhounds just needing teeth, eyes and basing so around 80% complete.
This is in addition to me trying to sort out the army into reasonable units.
Hopefully, RL permitting, I may just get the majority of these finished next week.

Also started prototyping my pegasus knights and hero on hippogriff.

The peg needs some GS work and he is ready for production.
The hippogriff needs a lot of GS work and I cannot get a decent pic of him at the moment, so I will post one when this is not the case ;)

I have an old ral partha figure for an alternative giant which I selected once for the case of building an albion army. I painted when I was a kid, and could be interesting the idea for your albion army. I had to found it, find the reference of the figure take a pic and I will post it later.

Just the model has been asked for, the customer wants to do the paint job.

Had a very productive week.
Got stuck into some commission work I have on and managed to finish 6 units of chariots and a unit of eagles for my Albion force.

I have got into the rut of just banging out units en masse, so the commission work has helped me to focus on quality rather than quantity.
This really helped with my chariot crews.

Got to say, I am not that happy with the horses.
It was an experiment with a new undercoat.
Works great on wooden items, but not so much on horses.
May have to revisit them.

The crew are great, even if I say so myself  :P
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: Carrington on August 13, 2010, 12:01:03 AM
You're right, the crews are great, the horses a little blah.  I'm not sure I see that much of a problem with the undercoating itself, but just that they all look the same.

There was an interesting piece on how to paint horses -- forgotten where and in what context -- whose main point was that horses tend to look very different from each other.   Convinced me that painting cavalry is almost as much of a bother as painting Confederates.
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: Guthwine on August 13, 2010, 12:39:41 AM
I tend to use one base color for horses too for every unit. But one easy thing to do is give a few of them some markings. Like a white stripe on the head or a white stripe on the lower leg. If you give half of the horses those markings and mix them together it will distract a bit from the fact that they are basically all the same. :)

heres some reference:

But I think your horses look great (especially the "blue-greyish" ones), only those that have a similar tone like the wood of the chariot kinda blend in to much with the rest so they dont stand out that much but they still look good.
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: pw on August 13, 2010, 08:58:54 AM
I'm with Guthwine on this, the grey ones look fine while the brown ones, while painted to the same standard, look a little bland because they blend into the brown of the chariot. That said, they look fine to me, I'd be very happy to play with/against them.

What really makes the crew stand out so nicely is the bright clean colours you've chosen and in my (minimal) experience of painting WM it seems that daring (bright) colour choices are often rewarded in a way that isn't so true at 28mm.

Finally finished the work I have been doing for Carrington.
16 casualty markers.
I have got to say I still have these to do for myself, but they are a joy to paint.
They are not as shiny in real life as the pictures show, except for the mud and the blood.

Me too :)
I would love to see the full set, even on here.
But to own them all would be great.

I know there are a lot of them, but does anyone have the full list?
It never stated exactly in WarMag which one were available
:(

There are 19 different markers available. There is a picture in one of the warmaster magazines of them on the last page. I guess it were Warmaster Magazine #3

Anyway I got 18 of them as it seems really to be impossible to get the big one.
I have the markers B till S and missing the big one with letter A.

I saw the big one only once on e-bay (in 10 years but at that time I did not collect the markers...unfortunately.

You should here see now a pic from Warmaster Magazine #3 with the markers.(if I did not make a mistake)

(http://a.imageshack.us/img833/1107/woundmarker.th.jpg) (http://img833.imageshack.us/i/woundmarker.jpg/)

I did not yet make a picture of the ones I painted....maybe I will do some and post here aferwards if "Azrael" allows me to do so in his thread

That is cool claus.
Or start a new thread and pop my pics in that :)
I thought the ad mentioned there being more than the ones shown?

Just checked.
It is warmag issue 2.
It does say that there are more than the ones shown :)

Hi Azrael...they mentioned that there are more but whoever I contacted and whoever I were talking about woundmarkers never saw more or other ones then the one listed in Warmag #2

Maybe there were the intention to produce more but it seems they never did.

Will make a new thread to show what I did with the woundmarkers.....thread done right now.

Been sorting out the chaos army I recently bought.
Here are the chaos marauder/troll/daemon beast/daemon infantry units.

I have to say I like them a LOT!

6 unts of slime

4 units of trolls for your delectation.
They can in a bit of a state (legs and arms missing), so one is in a slimy stream the other has had his tentacle lopped off ;)

I might keep 2 units for my Orcs. But in reality, I don't know when my chaos army would be taking all 4 of their units of trolls ;)

I genuinely don't understand how you're doing this! Four units in a night is completely amazes me. Oh, and they look very nice too. I can see the in-game logic of the mixing of colours too, although I think the idea of an army 'uniform' is too well embedded in my psyche to allow me to do such a thing.

For painting so well at such a pace you deserve these:  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

@pw thank you.
I know I do a bit of picture overload, but comments (of any sort) are getting a bit sparse on here for most of us WM painters  :'( so any comment is much appreciated.

As for output it is easy, proper planning and preparation prevents piss poor peformance ;)
I work in a very structured and methodical way so it is as easy to paint 4 units as it is 1.

Anyway, last night was the time for eagles, 3 units to be precise, it takes longer to get them all lined up on the bases than anything else :(

Tonight, all being well will be the turn of 3 wizards, 3 heroes and a general.
I am hoping to use these to tie in the tri-colour paint scheme I have used for this force  ::)
Title: Re: [WM] Azrael71's various projects
Post by: jchaos79 on October 06, 2010, 06:38:57 PM
Yep, the eagles are beutiful, the model perfect.... but it makes a reallly pain in the a## to fit them in the bases. And also the package to carry them to the club always ends with a wing or two detached.

Anyway, Azrael your work is brilliant as usual. thanks for sharing it really inspire me!

nice paint jobs. Your speed of painting is inspiring - I've managed to polish off 4 spearelf units and 2 archer units in the past two weeks.

Once I get going I can crank out a fair few units in a sitting.

Last nights efforts 2 units of chariots.

As always, your output is gorgeous in quality and initimidating in quantity.  I think it was your threads that inspired me to start painting Warmaster again.  Don't stop!

Can you give us an idea on how you get so much done?

I know what you mean about the Empire Halberdiers.  Some units are less inspiring than others.  But don't sweat over it.  It's not that bad!

A fan,

Thanks BlackEd,
As I have said before, planning counts for a big deal.
I set out the entire project and prep it in one go.
Then stick them to sticks for painting, I cannot get on with sticking them to bases as I cannot get to all the details, I know you can't really see those details, but I know they are not painted  ::)
Then I undercoat the entire project black, in one go.
Then I setout what I plan to do for each troop type.
So with high elves I do a test stand to test out the colours and methods I am going to use.
I also check what the prominent colour will be (metal or flat) that dictatctes the colour of the drybrush.

So spearmen I drybrush all the units I have in mithril silver, followed by another drybrush of the same colour (this lightens the colour) this is 40% of the model painted already.
Then I paint skin and hair on all the models followed by a wash to bring out details.
Then I normally work on 2 to 4 units at a time doing each step on every strip so gloves, skirts, trim on armour, jewels , weapons, shields etc.
I do a base coat then highlight or basecoat then wash dependant on the effect I want.
Then just tidy up each model stick to bases, then base.
Finally gloss varnish and matt varnish.

I do these steps sometime in tandem so while the glue dries on one unit I am doing another units bases and varnish, you get the idea.

Hope that sort of outlines how I do it.
Obviously for commission work, I add a couple of stages of highlighting and shading to increase the quality of the work.
Upto now all my commissioning customers have been very happy with the results :)

This weekend's output (low due to social events ;))

A unit of Dragon Princes and a dragon rider.

The dragons wings are actually very dark blue, but the flash shows them as dark green :(
There are 4 units of reavers on the bench as I type, hopefully these will be ready for basing tomorrow then tat just leaves 6 units of silver helms and the army is completed.
It has taken around 4 weeks for 3500 points :)

Now 8 units of cavalry and 8 units of warriors to go.
But I may swap out the chaos marauder horse I had planned for some of those nice italian sculpts just released.

Mick,

Good on you!

I just wish I had a tenth of your completion rate.  I've resigned myself to painting my 10's as individuals and have managed quite a few, I just need to get some photos taken.

My vote is for Araby!

I just noticed your dragon princes. They look awesome. Especially the blue metallic look! Great job also on the slimy fen beast.

edit:

I just tried to achieve that blue metallic look on my dragon princes but failed. How did you do it? Mithril silver and blue ink? The pic is on page 8 in case you can't remember anymore.

Thanks for the kind words.
It is nice to see a lot more painting on here putting my efforts to shame :)
@Rolgan: dude my output these past 6 months has been shocking, I used to be able to do a 2k army in a couple of weeks. But those marauder models just sat there and they ended up being a large mental block :(
@guthwine: No, standard eagle riders from eureka. But I didn't read the army list properly so did about 3 only to discover only druids can ride them ;)
@DCH: Now if I tell you the secret of my metallics will you keep it to yourself ;)
I have had about 5 different metallic paints bought from a craft store. They are branded as 'anitas metallics' and they do some really nice ones, especially useful for slaanesh armies.
I just use a chainmail over black overbrush, followed by the metallic blue, followed by a very, very light highlight of mithril.

Hopefully now my painting block has gone and I have some funds I will be able to proceed.
The first 10 packs of my Araby arrived this week and the kids are keen on me to paint an Aladin army so that does look favourite, but I am yearning to do the kislevs (although they play like poo) and the brets.

I bought mine from some small store about 10 years ago and it is still going strong :)

The blue is the metallic sapphire.
I also have rose, amethyst and emerald as well as a topaz that doesn't seem to be mentioned ?

Had a sort out and found a few rare alt units that need painting along with some of the moulds I had for my daemon and skaven armies.
So I will be painting up the alts (dragon princes, iron breakers?, crested steg, norse marauders and teutogen guard along with 5 cargo markers from forgeworld) and moving the moulds on :)

I have been asked to paint a High Elf army for a mate.
So thought I would post a few progress pictures up.
Slightly darker blue colour scheme than I normally do.
Just a few more steps and the RBT crews to paint, then basing and varnish :)

Hopefully by the close of play tomorrow I will have all the heroes, 4 units of spearmen and 2 units of bolt throwers done. :)

Fantastic - my hat goes off to you for painting 8 units of Chaos Marauder cavalry - no wonder it caused a bit of a painting block! (I've painted up 4 units of my own and that was quite enough thanks very much).

High elves looking good too!

Have you tried using the GW washes for warmaster? I now swear by badab black or devlan mud and have been able to lose a layer of painting since I've started using them without losing any quality.

Here are a lot of pics of the work done up to now along with 2 units of eagles taken by me with the wife's new camera.
She takes a better shot than me so I may have to sub-contract her :)
Next on the bench 1 unit of tomb king chariots.

My eldest has decide she wants to start playing pokemon TCG so yet another drain on my time looms :(

Off to find  a charizard card, if anyone can help me out please PM me ;)

Just finished off the lord on an eagle and started the dragon (going to be green and light brown.)
I always put off the dragon and eagle lord while last and end up dreading painting them :(
Yet when I get down to doing them they have got to be my 2 favourite warmaster models :)

Brilliant, they all look great. Very fast painting as well  ;D Really like that dragon

I was tempted to get the elf dragon rider for my Dark Elves, and use him as Malekith on a black dragon. But unsure.

I did one when I painted my dark elves.
Again they were done as my 3rd army so aren't up to my current standard.

Here is a pic

you can make out the guncarriage and wheels and the gunbarrel is off to the side... I guess it was hit by counterbattery fire, or got stepped on by a giant or dragon or similar......
