Title: Ultramarines: The Movie
Post by: Zhukov on November 10, 2010, 04:45:51 PM

So whatcha ya'll think about this movie? Honestly, I'm not really excited about it. I have a feeling the best part of the whole thing will be seeing the Strike Cruiser and imagining the possibilities of a movie with a lot of space combat in it... lol

Well, I'm just glad this movie got finished.   Does anyone else remember the CG blood angels movie that was being worked on, but put on indefinite hold around 2003? I think it was going to follow the same characters from the blood angels as a comic or books followed?  They had a lot of nice looking CG models they were working on, even a strike cruiser too.

CGI wise the movie is somewhat lacking, trailer wise I am not impressed... at ... all....

Remember that CGI Mechanicus Ark on the end page of Warp Rift? Well that dude is working as a 3D artist on a short movie .... now the WIP of that is so much more impressive.

It amazes me that full on movies can have such poor CGI. Many games these days have fantastic in-game non-rendered cinematics - movies should be able to be at least twice as good ;).

C'mon a movie that is not released in cinemas? Makes me worry...

I agree with you all. It seems like it's at best video game quality CGI. Plus, I didn't have speakers when I saw the trailer, but the storyline looks...... kinda dumb to me.

Watched more teasers today - the thing that made me laugh is that a squad apothecary is bossing everyone around - this is so fluffy for Ultramarines to have apothecary acting like a chaplain. I think he was even telling sargant what to do )

This movie was terrible and does more harm than good to the hobby imho.

Strike Cruisers apparently have a crew of around 8 btw, lol.

Well, when not transporting a company they indeed do have only one tactical squad of Marines aboard. Rest is serfs.

Yeah Astartes may be few in number, but the crew number around 1k.
All we see is the Astartes compliment iirc.

Perhaps if it sells well we will see better movies in future.

Psh.  Way more than 1k my friend.  A cobra escort is twice the displacement of an aircraft carrier, and aircraft carriers crew around 5k :)

A Lunar is 96000 crew.

Well you know, small budget,  not enough time or money to make all those extra models, mesh them, frame them, animate and render them, possible voice recording for their grunts and such while performing backbreaking labor. Or maybe chanting as they all sing a song or chant in unison to get timing right on things they have to work together on.

The fluff for 40K always confuse me.
The first heretic mentions a strike cruiser sized vessel with around a 1k compliment, wich is where i pulled my figure from.
Mind you, it also mentions a planet wide civil war spanning decades that saw 2 million casualties :)
Relativly low body count for a world war.

FFG rates the crew of 'smaller raiders' at 10,000 iirc. Here I'll actually check....

Transport: ~20,000
Raiders: 22,000
Frigates: 30,000
Dauntless: 65,000
Lunar: 95,000

Wolfpack raider (basically an iconoclast): 18,000
Onslaught raider: Countless (that's orks for you....)
Firestorm: 25,000
Avenger: 120,000
Lathe-class: 52,000
Cobra class: 15,500
Q-ship: 18,000
Tyrant: 10000

Orks don't need life support.

When thinking about Ork space tech, one must remember that they repel the deamons when they're doing warp jumps by mounting large teef to the front of the ship to invoke the protection of Gork and Mork. And if the deamons slip in while they're in transit then that's just part of the fun.
