Title: Square bases
Post by: fracas on December 17, 2010, 12:53:57 AM
upside:
1. easier to determine facing and arcs
2. easier to move straight ahead
3. with a template easier to set turns.

downside
1. slightly more vulnerable to ordnance when the square base corners are contacted
2. not as aesthetically pleasing

seems advantages outweigh the disadvanatages

In that case I would suggest hexagonal bases.....  !!

Nah, I like my round bases.. It keeps a pseudo look of space age stuff :P

I've seen hex bases before, and while they would accomplish everything that a square base does while looking better, they still don't look as good as the round bases. Makes sense if you're using a hex board, but since we don't use that in BFG ...

Why hexagonal?
Every thing in BFG is 4 sided as in 4 firing arcs or 45 vs 90 degree turns

You have same advantage as square, less disadvantage because it is closer to circle, and making 45 turns is easier.....

My math is off?
Hexagonals make 60 degree turns easier not 45

Octagonal bases would be the ideal. Would give all major and minor compass points for turning and fire arcs.

i like the idea of hexagonal but i think square would work fine
use a ruler with a 45 degree end
edge your ship along the minimum then turn on the ruler's end

That ship is painted ridiculously similarly to mine, except for the silver trim.

painted quite like mine as well (me: darker blue, gray instead of silver, and black trim on prow). what kind of pen did you use to mark those arcs? I've been looking for a white pen... but NOBODY MAKES THEM!!

on another note:
square base pro's: smaller than the GW standard circle base (20mm vs 25mm).
quite easily obtained en-mass.
very easy 'rank up' for waves.

Ok, so I won't be winning any prizes for originality.  Paint schemes of my own design look like an over-enthusiastic twelve year old on acid, so I stick what I know.

Incidentally, I didn't use a pen - just a detail brush with scorpion green.  Same deal as with the name.

Cool as square bases are, round ones don't catch so much on my felt mat.  Although they are a must have for ordnance.

What I would really like to do is to have a rotating disc underneath that marks the number of hits left - but that's another topic.

somebody from the old port made bases with the arc marker and a spot for a damage die... can't remember who, think they were given away with gothicomp 2010.

on the issue of snagging, has anyone tried (or maybe i'll be the first) covering your table with sheet magnets and then polarizing your bases?

Russ C made them.

when will the port be back anyway?

still think square bases make movement and turns more reliable/verifiable.

I was thinking square bases would be perfect, atleast from a production stand point if we would switch from round to square.  Octagon would be the next best choice, but would require GW or us to get them from another source.

Edit:    20x20mm bases for mines/escorts/fighters/bombers/transports,  25x25mm for cruisers and some defense platforms, 40x40mm for battleships and some defense platforms,  50x50mm for rare stuff like planet killer, hulk, others.
