Some pics from my log over on TacComms. These are for the Dover, NH tourney next weekend. I'm hoping to have these assembled and base coated by then.
Also, a lot of people seem to ask about solutions to the HE spear problem, my solution is below.
4 Archers arching.
(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_vEU3a09jmQM/TSeRt1clxuI/AAAAAAAAGEQ/rZIbHCQqI2U/s640/IMG_0001.JPG) (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_vEU3a09jmQM/TSeRt1clxuI/AAAAAAAAGEQ/rZIbHCQqI2U/s1600/IMG_0001.JPG)
8 stands of Spearmen with their spears removed and replaced with silk pins. It was a lot of pin vicing...

The shariots, sans crew.

-
well well well
looking forward to seeing these painted :)
-
What is your solution to broken spears?
-
Dave,
I'm looking forward to see them next weekend!
Ed
-
Not sure when I'll be getting to the paint on these guys. The EA Tyranids are my big project for this year. Atleast they'll be built for next weekend though.
@jchaos - I replaced the spear tips with silk pins.
-
Nearly set for tomorrow. I didn't get to the wash but everything bar the Chariots, Reavers and Bolt Throwers is primed, silvered and temporarily fixed to bases with white glue. Those later units I primed and silvered after I took this pic, I just need to base them quick tonight.

-
Thanks Dave, how do you attach/glue them? (the new spears)
The army looks awesome, let's see what colour scheme do you use!
-
I use a pin vice to drill out a hole in the hand and then just use super glue.
-
Alright, with our Epic Tourney come and gone it's time to head back to these Elves that have been patiently waiting to go since the New Year. So prepare yourself ("gird your loins" as Kren would say...) for weekly painting updates.
I started with the Archers, and began with a single strip to figure out the order I should paint everything in.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fx0orO6j9uY/Tg3I7qSej5I/AAAAAAAAHwY/g2x6Drw7zic/s640/IMG_0084.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fx0orO6j9uY/Tg3I7qSej5I/AAAAAAAAHwY/g2x6Drw7zic/s1600/IMG_0084.JPG)
Most of the color combination game from GW's High Elf painting articles. I usually left out a step, figuring that three paints (rather than four) per color on a 10mm model ought to be good enough.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6J9rnHdw11U/Tg3I8FCe9cI/AAAAAAAAHwc/pxWZw4KPYoA/s640/IMG_0085.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6J9rnHdw11U/Tg3I8FCe9cI/AAAAAAAAHwc/pxWZw4KPYoA/s1600/IMG_0085.JPG)
The best part of the whole thing? Painting the eyes! I know these sculpts have been around for ten years or so but I'm finding just how nice they are now (and spotting a few mistakes thanks to this close-up...).
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EEXqkK9TG_g/Tg3I8trsVDI/AAAAAAAAHwg/nNTk8oQ8tCI/s640/IMG_0086.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EEXqkK9TG_g/Tg3I8trsVDI/AAAAAAAAHwg/nNTk8oQ8tCI/s1600/IMG_0086.JPG)
I'm planning on starting on the assembly line painting next week, so hopefully I'll be able to finish four units by the end of July.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FLxR5MhPu7Q/Tg3I84OUWeI/AAAAAAAAHwk/j7J3iwOyt2w/s640/IMG_0087.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FLxR5MhPu7Q/Tg3I84OUWeI/AAAAAAAAHwk/j7J3iwOyt2w/s1600/IMG_0087.JPG)
-
Very nice work! Painting eyes on WM minis is just crazy. :)
-
Thanks Guthwine. I figure if the sculptor can sculpt the eyes at the very least I can paint them. :P
-
They look great. I assume you use a magnifying device to be able to paint the eyes?
-
So great proyect. and magnificient paint job.
Are you going to red/white scheme for the HE?
-
@Geep - Nope, just my own set of eyes. With them being on a strip I've found I can kind of rest the paint brush on the back of my thumb to help with a quick left to right motion. That seems to work pretty well for the white, for the black I just turn the strip 90 degrees clockwise and do the same.
@jchaos - Ya, that's the plan. I've got some laser decal paper too for the shields that I want to try out too.
-
Got the flesh basecoat and wash down as well as just over half of the white base coat this week.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aE9dNq7MZPY/ThcQKjGkCxI/AAAAAAAAHw4/-nb5CkfGqyE/s640/IMG_0088.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aE9dNq7MZPY/ThcQKjGkCxI/AAAAAAAAHw4/-nb5CkfGqyE/s1600/IMG_0088.JPG)
For the flesh I use Tallarn Flesh as a base coat and then wash it with Ogryn Flesh. Next week I'll head back and do the eyes, highlight with Tallarn Flesh and then Elf Flesh.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IW6kZWR-tCI/ThcQK8_Y8vI/AAAAAAAAHw8/A4cUpL67KCw/s640/IMG_0089.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IW6kZWR-tCI/ThcQK8_Y8vI/AAAAAAAAHw8/A4cUpL67KCw/s1600/IMG_0089.JPG)
The white is a Astronomican Grey basecoat, followed by a very light gray and then white.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0pZt4tvaMlw/ThcQLpOLEVI/AAAAAAAAHxA/2jYPhhUInkI/s640/IMG_0090.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0pZt4tvaMlw/ThcQLpOLEVI/AAAAAAAAHxA/2jYPhhUInkI/s1600/IMG_0090.JPG)
I'm hoping to finish these four units by the end of July. If I can keep to a unit per week I should be done sometime in Nov. :P
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MYF2QYANcgg/ThcQLylt7qI/AAAAAAAAHxE/3LLrMJ3FV44/s640/IMG_0091.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MYF2QYANcgg/ThcQLylt7qI/AAAAAAAAHxE/3LLrMJ3FV44/s1600/IMG_0091.JPG)
-
wow!!! now that's what i call batch-painting. :o
Very high standard as well, impressive
I find it difficult enough painting one unit at a time.
-
remarkable!
very pretty!!!
-
Thanks guys.
Ya, painting in batches really helps. It'd take 1.5-2 times as long if I was doing it unit by unit, and I'd end up wasting a lot more paint too from all the unused stuff that dries up.
-
I managed to finish the white as well as the flesh on these guys this week. I ended up with a few extra painting nights due to a body surfing injury last weekend that ruled out climbing for this week. So, I turned to the tiny elves instead.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nQtnNes99o0/TiA_a5gx-LI/AAAAAAAAHxg/whvjuGAPyUI/s640/IMG_0092.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nQtnNes99o0/TiA_a5gx-LI/AAAAAAAAHxg/whvjuGAPyUI/s1600/IMG_0092.JPG)
I also started the red on one of the strips, that'll be next week's project if I get to paint at all while on vacation.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p5hrisobgys/TiA_bUWvtmI/AAAAAAAAHxk/p51sW6Evd14/s640/IMG_0093.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p5hrisobgys/TiA_bUWvtmI/AAAAAAAAHxk/p51sW6Evd14/s1600/IMG_0093.JPG)
I'm still hoping to have them done by the end of July, any thoughts on basing? Right not I'm leaning towards sand/pebbles with a quick base coat and drybrush followed by some kind of flock.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rCJYdpLY7bY/TiA_b0BTPZI/AAAAAAAAHxo/ys5B9Pn0tsc/s640/IMG_0094.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rCJYdpLY7bY/TiA_b0BTPZI/AAAAAAAAHxo/ys5B9Pn0tsc/s1600/IMG_0094.JPG)
Not sure what I'm going to start on next, it'll either by the spearmen since I have so many of them or maybe the Chariots and Bolt Throwers for a "break".
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WRQQOMco0bQ/TiA_cTNVXZI/AAAAAAAAHxs/2-q_dDjZzQU/s640/IMG_0095.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WRQQOMco0bQ/TiA_cTNVXZI/AAAAAAAAHxs/2-q_dDjZzQU/s1600/IMG_0095.JPG)
-
Work continues on the archers. The red and bows are now done. What's left are the quivers, fletchings and hair. Looks like it'll be taking one week longer than July as I didn't get a chance to paint last week while on vacation.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Th5ETYJfrB4/TjKt7DN2F2I/AAAAAAAAHyA/63T1_ew1BG4/s640/IMG_0096.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Th5ETYJfrB4/TjKt7DN2F2I/AAAAAAAAHyA/63T1_ew1BG4/s1600/IMG_0096.JPG)
Here's some close-ups of all the variants. I'm going to have to do a round of touchups once everything is done, I was definitely sloppier with these than I was when I was doing the test strip.

Very nice! It takes Iron Discipline to batch paint Warmaster figures in large numbers.
Nice "ash wood" effect on the bows.
Dave
-
Tell me about it, my resolve weakens every time I work on them. One last push though ought to do it though.
Thanks, it was actually taken straight from GW's HE painting tutorials. Khemri Brown base, Kommando Khaki stripes and thinner Bleached Bone stripes. The khaki paint I have isn't very opaque though, so I might switch to Dheneb Stone next time.
-
More outstanding work mate.
;D ;D ;D
-
Thanks man.
I managed to finish up the painting on the archers this week and get them on the bases (which are magnetized :)). Soaking the cardboard strips in a little bit of water loosened up the white glue enough so they just pealed off.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KYsRipi1buI/TjvmgYpeiOI/AAAAAAAAHyo/8j0Tq-O52dA/s640/IMG_0102.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KYsRipi1buI/TjvmgYpeiOI/AAAAAAAAHyo/8j0Tq-O52dA/s1600/IMG_0102.JPG)
I would have started the basing on them last night but the sand I have is a little too fine for 10mm I think. I'm going to see what else I might have laying around before I commit to anything.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0HfHTsOBYYc/TjvmgwRz9mI/AAAAAAAAHys/y5BpcTE3VQY/s640/IMG_0103.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0HfHTsOBYYc/TjvmgwRz9mI/AAAAAAAAHys/y5BpcTE3VQY/s1600/IMG_0103.JPG)
Next up are half of my spearmen (spearELVES to be racially considerate...). There's more of them per base but they're armored much heavier than the archers so I'm hoping they'll go quicker with less paint having to be put on them thanks to them being silver already.

If I can be cheeky and offer some advice.......
With archers I like to snip them apart so they can be staggered slightly rather than all be in pairs of one behind the other.
It's a pain but as you have put so much effort into painting them already, I think just a bit more time and they could be even better.
Dave
-
I thought about doing that back when I was assembling but the problem is five out of six of the variant poses are attached by more than something that can really be snipped. Often time whole arms or parts of the body are attached to the bow of the archer in the back.
I already replaced nearly 300 spears with pins, I wasn't about to mess with 96 archers. :P
-
I mount my archers 5 strips to a stand to get a crowd
But each strip isn't as nicely painted :)
-
Those archers are superb, very high standard. They'll look good on a battlefield. :)
Well done pushing yourself to paint so many. I also struggle with painting figures, takes all my willpower to pick up a paintbrush and start painting. I personally find films in the background or painting with a friend the best way to paint.
-
Thanks guys, here's a little bit of progress.
I started work on my first four units of Spearmen this week. The silver is basecoated, washed and drybrushed, and the flesh basecoated and washed as well.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NyofvYl2gKY/TkU7Ga542PI/AAAAAAAAHzM/feYVPPAEOmo/s640/IMG_0105.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NyofvYl2gKY/TkU7Ga542PI/AAAAAAAAHzM/feYVPPAEOmo/s1600/IMG_0105.JPG)
I also did the white basecoat on one of the strips while I was waiting for the flesh wash to dry. I ought to be able to get the white and flesh done next week hopefully.

I also worked on the basing for the archers a bit, thoughts? I'm planning to hit these guys with another coat of dullcote and then maybe use some static grass or flock, haven't decided which yet.

Didn't manage to get pictures taken last week until last night, so here we are. Not much progress last week, the white basecoat took a lot longer than I thought. It was the command strips that slowed me down.

Hopefully the white highlights will go quicker this week but it already looks like I'll be painting these into September though.

-
Dave
did you replace ALL the spears ? and if so; what procedure ??
-
Haha, yep. Somewhere around 250 of them I think. I lost count. :P
The spears were cut off just above the glove (if anyone's interested in 200+ HE spear tips let me know...) and used a ~0.75mm drill bit to drill into the hand a little ways. I then snipped the tips off of a bunch of silk pins that were around the same diameter and glued them in the hand holes using superglue.
It took a couple of hours all told but now I don't have to worry about any bending/breaking spears. Multiple puncture wounds are another story however...
-
very impressive... I mean your patient! also the figures, they look great now!
-
Work continues on the Pokey Brigade, but better yet, I finally got around to finishing the bases on my Archers.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Uzm1S8j54Kw/TleUOXmP1YI/AAAAAAAAH4w/wAKztxiXEo4/s640/IMG_0115.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Uzm1S8j54Kw/TleUOXmP1YI/AAAAAAAAH4w/wAKztxiXEo4/s1600/IMG_0115.JPG)
I used the Silfor 2-4mm grass tufts on these (late summer/early fall). The bases I did with Charadon Granite, Graveyard Earth and Dheneb Stone over some medium grit sand that Matt gave me (there's your plug... ya jerk).
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2643-H8YSXE/TleUO8LQ3UI/AAAAAAAAH40/YJebf00Tl64/s640/IMG_0116.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2643-H8YSXE/TleUO8LQ3UI/AAAAAAAAH40/YJebf00Tl64/s1600/IMG_0116.JPG)
As to the pokey brigade, I finished their white this week and started on the red.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uet2Uvo69WY/TleUPLOdRdI/AAAAAAAAH44/TWJp7FUc60o/s640/IMG_0117.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uet2Uvo69WY/TleUPLOdRdI/AAAAAAAAH44/TWJp7FUc60o/s1600/IMG_0117.JPG)
Here's the command strip. The red really starts to liven up the model when all you've done so far is white and silver.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pvBFjOS_nTc/TleUPvIrqiI/AAAAAAAAH48/DSzVHQ8vmq0/s640/IMG_0118.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pvBFjOS_nTc/TleUPvIrqiI/AAAAAAAAH48/DSzVHQ8vmq0/s1600/IMG_0118.JPG)
-
The silflor grass tufts rock - I use them on my adler napoleonic bases but (puzzlingly?) never considered using them on warmaster figures. Seeing how good yours look, I think I'll give them a try!
Dave
-
This is going to be a magnificent army when it's all done!
Colors similar to my WFB HE. If I take the plunge with WM, I'll spray silver, wash with blue ink. White or astronomicon for the robes, washed with thinned Sepia, then bleach bone, then white. Shields, maybe ultramarines blue.
Looking forward to custom shield decals.
-
Thanks. Done's still looking mighty far away though...
Still working on the red for these guys. It's going to be "that color" for the spearmen. The shields are the most time consumrng, mainly because of all the little nooks and crannies where you have to get the shadow.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPueu-IwhIc/TmDUmgVgAWI/AAAAAAAAH7I/khF_Qh8njlw/s640/IMG_0119.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPueu-IwhIc/TmDUmgVgAWI/AAAAAAAAH7I/khF_Qh8njlw/s1600/IMG_0119.JPG)
I was going to paint the backs of the shields that were visible through the spearmen but after one strip I was getting annoying at how many times I was hitting their elbows that I've already done white. So that put an end to that...
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rbBMxRtCrec/TmDUncau6kI/AAAAAAAAH7M/BiV0hXacLhQ/s640/IMG_0120.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rbBMxRtCrec/TmDUncau6kI/AAAAAAAAH7M/BiV0hXacLhQ/s1600/IMG_0120.JPG)
I'm going to see about a design for the decals this weekend. Next Monday is a holiday so hopefully I'll be able to get a bit more done next week.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bbPVxlcHc8A/TmDUnx0MSqI/AAAAAAAAH7Q/U6O9OBlZ49A/s640/IMG_0121.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bbPVxlcHc8A/TmDUnx0MSqI/AAAAAAAAH7Q/U6O9OBlZ49A/s1600/IMG_0121.JPG)
-
Looking good Dave! I like them better in these pictures then when your elves were stabbing my greenskins in the eye.
-
With the holiday on Monday and the bottom of my driveway being flooded on Thursday I got quite a bit of work done of these guys this week. The red is finished and I've started on the spear hafts as well, putting down their base coat.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rp46MOniibY/TmoTKP83SfI/AAAAAAAAH7g/lKXRI6swjeU/s640/IMG_0122.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rp46MOniibY/TmoTKP83SfI/AAAAAAAAH7g/lKXRI6swjeU/s1600/IMG_0122.JPG)
I'm hoping to be able to finish the spears next week and start the leather as well. Then there's touch-up, decals, protecting and basing. They definitely took a lot longer than I thought though, I think next month it'll be chariots and bolt throwers. Something a bit easier.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JBBXQ7FPiPw/TmoTKgk4PQI/AAAAAAAAH7k/DRjWj1H8f6M/s640/IMG_0123.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JBBXQ7FPiPw/TmoTKgk4PQI/AAAAAAAAH7k/DRjWj1H8f6M/s1600/IMG_0123.JPG)
The red was a Machrite Red base coat followed by a Russet Red and two light coats of Blood Red, each covering a smaller area than the last. I also edged the tops of the shields with Burning Orange I believe.

They look brilliant. Very crisp and clean, well done. :)
How many points are you planning for this huge high elf army?
-
Thanks. I have 2k I'm planning on doing, plus a dragon and maybe some BoFA eagles if I can get hold of a unit. I have enough to do another 1k but I don't think I'll be getting to that anytime soon, if ever (we rarely play past 2k).
-
So I think I found a good source for my banners and shield designs:
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/55399397.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/91470181.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/67240057.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/74940003.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/68307568.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/41011075.jpg
http://vnmedia.ign.com/screenshots/warhammer/26279772.jpg
They're Warhammer Online concept art for High Elf staves. I'm going to work a couple up and see how they look at 5mm or so for the shields. Obviously you won't be able to see a whole bunch of detail at that level but hopefully the basic designs will be unique enough so I can keep my units together.
-
What do you guys think?
-
Pretty cool man! I specially like the second and the fourth
-
I like the second the most, but maybe go with a cream colour? Grey makes it look too much like the rest of the metal.
-
I like all the designs. You could do a different shield symbol for each spearman unit.
To save you painting all those fiddly designs, have you seen 10mm transfers?
This place sells 10mm shield transfers, i haven't really searched for any. There might be more around. Most aren't appropriate for high elves. I picked out an eagle design, problem is it's red and your shields are red ;D But there are white ones
http://www.magistermilitum.com/product.asp?numRecordPosition=9&P_ID=10482&strPageHistory=cat&strKeywords=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=1112
EDIT.... actually thinking about it, 10mm is probably the size of the transfer. Not the size of figure it's aimed at. Not sure now.
-
Ya, the plan was to print those on decal paper and put them on the shields and banners.
-
I finished the spear hafts and leather this past week and began the touchup. I'm hoping to finish the painting on these guys over the weekend so I can work on the transfers and the basing the next. The plan is to have them done by next week's photo session, but I'm ready for them to be done now. :P

-
That seems really good man!
-
Thanks jchaos.
A mid-week update to get some thoughts on the decals. I've only done one stand so far and then touched it up where it cracked along the edges. I see a couple more spots thanks to the macro where I can help mask the fact that its a decal, but what do you guys think? Worth it?
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tRFyBMXIm_k/ToHGG2CydqI/AAAAAAAAIWk/IwqXK6kz0UE/s640/IMG_0131.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tRFyBMXIm_k/ToHGG2CydqI/AAAAAAAAIWk/IwqXK6kz0UE/s1600/IMG_0131.JPG)
-
I think they are perfect!
-
Those would blow me away on the table.
-
Definetly worth it! They look amazing.
-
Brilliant, your high elf army is going to look amazing ;D
-
Great pics and really nice work
-
Thanks guys. I've got time to sneak one last update on these guys in for September. The painting and decals are done, I got them finished up yesterday and then hit them twice with Glosscote and once with Dullcote. They'll be getting based over the coming weeks, as I find time like I did with the archers, but the chariots and bolt throwers will be the main project for October.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hxPSx90BHzE/ToZRKF4fCqI/AAAAAAAAIaQ/CVfRrrWETFc/s640/IMG_0132.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hxPSx90BHzE/ToZRKF4fCqI/AAAAAAAAIaQ/CVfRrrWETFc/s1600/IMG_0132.JPG)
These guys are my favorite of the bunch, I think the white star came out the best of all the decals I put together.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ABvYcaepft4/ToZRK7fBiHI/AAAAAAAAIaU/5l928NGCvR8/s640/IMG_0133.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ABvYcaepft4/ToZRK7fBiHI/AAAAAAAAIaU/5l928NGCvR8/s1600/IMG_0133.JPG)
The face (in case you were wondering, yes I'll be referring to the brigades by these names in games :P) is tied for second place, it looks all right but it's kind of small.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zSeTisET75I/ToZRLW-akUI/AAAAAAAAIaY/cEw8hPT9FRY/s640/IMG_0134.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zSeTisET75I/ToZRLW-akUI/AAAAAAAAIaY/cEw8hPT9FRY/s1600/IMG_0134.JPG)
The crescent came in last. The decals on the shields don't stand out enough for my taste, they're too thin I think.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VDmLmugJIEI/ToZRL3angjI/AAAAAAAAIac/_w9aD-JwtSg/s640/IMG_0135.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VDmLmugJIEI/ToZRL3angjI/AAAAAAAAIac/_w9aD-JwtSg/s1600/IMG_0135.JPG)
Finally, the wings were the other second place finisher, beaten out only by the star because it was such a pain to get them centered on the shields.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Lo7OtKquT5E/ToZRMumBigI/AAAAAAAAIag/twAXBeM30oo/s640/IMG_0136.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Lo7OtKquT5E/ToZRMumBigI/AAAAAAAAIag/twAXBeM30oo/s1600/IMG_0136.JPG)
-
Those look really great- the decals add a nice touch. Your final army is going to look brilliant.
-
They all look great! What did you use as a replacement for the hearts on the banner poles?
-
Thanks guys. The tops of the banner poles are from the new Warhammer Seagaurd models I believe.
-
I started on the chariot and bolt thrower crew this week. Two dozen guys painted up pretty quick in comparison to the Spearmen... You'll note that the cloth tied to the spears is red. It was originally white until Matt poo-pooed that.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3dMWRADdWHk/To73CV0g0tI/AAAAAAAAIi0/DWM-7XyFWng/s640/IMG_0137.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3dMWRADdWHk/To73CV0g0tI/AAAAAAAAIi0/DWM-7XyFWng/s1600/IMG_0137.JPG)
I've got one more highlight to go on the skin and leather, then the hair and touchup. These guys ought to be finished up next week so I can start the equipment or horses, haven't decided which yet.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I_PhsqrUDzA/To73CwjuNjI/AAAAAAAAIi4/uFGDBv9kTLM/s640/IMG_0138.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I_PhsqrUDzA/To73CwjuNjI/AAAAAAAAIi4/uFGDBv9kTLM/s1600/IMG_0138.JPG)
I've got to come up with some banners for the Bolt Throwers though, and while I'm at it designs for the cavalry as well.

I took last week off but unfortunately didn't have too much time to paint (miniatures anyway) most of my time was taken up by projects like this:
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6QVAVd9s6Uw/Tpw8OCF4VjI/AAAAAAAAIjI/SYgSfeWP0ck/s640/IMG_0141.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6QVAVd9s6Uw/Tpw8OCF4VjI/AAAAAAAAIjI/SYgSfeWP0ck/s1600/IMG_0141.JPG)
My Grandpa wanted his shed's roof stripped and repainted so I went to work, the above pic is after the primer coat on my 1:1 scale shed terrain. My Aunt noted that it would've probably been easier to buy a new shed but I digress...
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f8ZB4dva8qU/Tpw8OaiFfaI/AAAAAAAAIjM/ZwZCF1v_K1w/s640/IMG_0142.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f8ZB4dva8qU/Tpw8OaiFfaI/AAAAAAAAIjM/ZwZCF1v_K1w/s1600/IMG_0142.JPG)
I did manage to finish the touch-up on the chariot and bolt thrower crew though, again I'm noticing some things I missed though thanks to the macro. I'm hoping to print out some banners for the bolt throwers this week along with shield designs for my Silver Helms to finish them up.

I started on the horses too, using some dry brushes. I'm planning on stippling some gray on the white ones, not sure what I'm going to do with the duns yet. The bays are one step ahead of the rest though and I think they came out alright based on my source pictures.

They look grteat! I can't wait to see them in person!
-
Hoping to have them done in time for January. We'll see.
-
Very nice detail!
How many points all together will the force be?
Dave
-
Looking at 2k at the moment:
8 Spearmen
4 Archers
2 Silver Helms
2 Reavers
2 Chariots
2 Elven Bolt Throwers
1 General
2 Heroes
2 Wizards
I have enough to do half of that again, but I don't think I'd be doing it anytime soon (we've yet to play more than 2k). Some BoFA eagles and a converted dragon might find there way onto my painting table next year though, assuming I can get my hands on the former.
-
You want to come and play with our group. Everyone goes for 4K armies and I have gone for a "double" army of 8K of Orcs and Goblins.
Dave
(Warmaster........ for men) ;D
-
8k? That would take me two years to paint! Do you need a moving dolly to transport it all?
-
where is this group? such big armies = awesomesauce <3
-
It has taken me and a friend (the best painter in our group, who I pay) just over a year between us to paint them all. Another month or two and they should all be finished.
For my 40th birthday (end of Nov) we are having a gaming weekend 8K of Orcs and Goblins vs a combined force of 4K Araby and 4K Dwarves.
There will be lots of pictures oh yes!
We are based in Chorley, between Preston and Manchester in the UK
Dave
-
Elves are looking great Dave ;D I'm jealous of your elves having chariots, wish dark elves had chariots >:(
8K of Orcs and Goblins vs a combined force of 4K Araby and 4K Dwarves.
That is going to be great, i thought i had a few orcs (but i've only got 6k worth)
How many days are you expecting it to take?
..... there's a really good batrep in a fanatic magazine that is 6 armies, each with 5k.... and it took them 2 days
-
We're going to set it all up and do the first turn on the Friday night, before going out for curry and beer.
On saturday we will be playing all day and going out again in the evening.
Sunday morning we will do the last couple of turns then pack everything away to go home back to our wives, bleary eyed.
A friend of ours has access to a large flat that our group has been given permission to sleep at on the Friday and Saturday night for free and there are restaraunts and pubs nearby.
One of the lads has been designated the oficial photographer so there should be loads of pictures being posted up end of Novemberish.
We've been planning this and painting the forces for it for the last year!

id give my left leg to have such a kick ass and active crew in my neighborhood :(
-
I started on the chariots this week rather than try and finish the horses. I got the basecoat for the wood down and did the white and red lacquering on the front of the chariots. With my army colors I had a choice between Candy Cane Elves or Japanese Elves given the design on the front of the chariots, I chose the former. Hopefully I should be able to finish these guys up next week as I'll have a couple extra nights to paint.

Nearly done on the chariots. All that's left is to wash and edge the bases, glue everything together and hit it with dullcote to take the glosscote shine away. The horses all ended up getting washed with Devlan Mud, in the end I think the Coat D'arms horse tone paints came out pretty realistic.

All that remains for the Bolt Throwers is to get some banners designed to put on them. I've been trying to finish up the decals for the Silver Helm and Reaver pennants before I print them out though. Find designs for that is a little troublesome.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyRNvON5rFA/TrP6Rmd2bII/AAAAAAAAJHA/MEvApXyQRRY/s640/IMG_0150.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DyRNvON5rFA/TrP6Rmd2bII/AAAAAAAAJHA/MEvApXyQRRY/s1600/IMG_0150.JPG)
I also finally based the spearmen too. All they need is another dullcote layer and the grass.

BANZAIIIIII
Excellent work on the chariots - you have achieved very bright, contrasting colours that work!
Dave
-
These army is looking sooo great!
-
The next couple of weeks will see few updates as I go into stealth mode for the EpiComp. Still hoping to finish my Elves for Ed's Warmaster day in January. We'll see how it goes.
I got the decals on the Bolt Thrower banners this past week but didn't manage to finish up painting them. Aside from that and the grass though these guys are done.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DrV8rLobuNw/TsFC3BETmkI/AAAAAAAAJHU/5N31aOS_hww/s640/IMG_0154.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DrV8rLobuNw/TsFC3BETmkI/AAAAAAAAJHU/5N31aOS_hww/s1600/IMG_0154.JPG)
All the Chariots would have needed would have been the grass, however I dropped three of the stands while taking them out for this photoshoot. Not a whole lot of damage (one chariot needed to be reglued and a horse tail needs touch up) but still kind of upsetting.

Like I said last week, very little progress on these guys. The mail has been washed and drybrushed silver and I laid down the base for the white on the command stands and one rank-and-file strip. Hopefully I'll be able to return to these guys in early Decemeber to get them done for January.

Wow.... wooden ships and iron elfs!
Some details cry out "Grognard" in our picture's backgrounds.
And as I can tell, so am I. :P
-
Dave - those look amazing! Such a change from the last time I saw them (All in silver...)
Look forward to seeing them next month...
Tristan
-
Thanks man. Should be able to get the spears done in time, not so hopeful on the Cav anymore. EpiComp set me back.
-
Nice work.
I do like red elves ;)
-
And back to the High Elves! The white is nearly done on the final batch of spears. After that I need to do a bit of repair work (my paints got dropped on a strip and broke 10-15 of the spears) but hopefully I'll be able to finish up the flesh and move on to the leater/wood next week.

Here's the standard bearer for my general. I used the dragon head from one of the spearmen command strips for the top of the pole. I need to do some putty work on the sides though where I cut it free. The penant is from the Dark Eldar Raider banner, they work pretty well I think.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr6SwYw0T3A/TuuVZIj2_4I/AAAAAAAAJj8/AW_SaCcaFQs/s640/IMG_0178.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr6SwYw0T3A/TuuVZIj2_4I/AAAAAAAAJj8/AW_SaCcaFQs/s1600/IMG_0178.JPG)
Finally, here's an alternate Wizard I'm working on. I didn't like him on the column of air/shooting the fire so those got chopped off, plus I added some weapon swaps. He needs a lot of putty work to cover everything up.

Dave,
Looks good! I like the conversions -- both the mage and the standard bearer!
-
The mage looks excellent!
And, consider the "pennant for the standard" idea stolen. It looks excellent - adds that extra dimension to the mini.
-
this all looks amazing.
i have nothing but respect for ppl who can paint this well, as i cannot :)
i have other qualities, or so they tell me to cheer me up lol
-
Excellent work and a nice army. I like all of your small ideas and conversion like the spearstips and the two characters. Keep up the nice pics please!
-
looking forward to see that elf mage conversion ;D
-
Me too. :P
I didn't get a chance to work on the spears over the holidays but I'm back on the wagon as of yesterday. I should be back to regular weekly updates now until the army's done.
In other news I secured the SoC Teclis fig on eBay for cheap, he came in last night and looks good. Lex has sent me the SoC Tyrion as well, he must be over the Atlantic at the moment though.
I'm also rethinking my Dragon conversion as I'm liking the Uncharted Seas dragon less and less. What do people think of this guy:

I think a little work on the eyes and horns will make him look meaner, but beyond that I think he'll work pretty good. That's a 25mm square base that he's on.

I agree - however, you had best follow suit with the rose blossom scroll work on the lance; nothing says badass more than pretty flowers on your weapon.
-
Like the Pretty Purple Marines? Complete with bedazzled vehicles?
-
Not a whole lot of progress over the holidays, still hoping to have these done for the 21st though. I've been working on repairing the spears that broke a month or two back, it's been slow going though as my glue isn't cooperating with the low humidity and cold weather.
The wood is nearly done on all of these, once I get to the leather and hair I'll hit all of those with a brown wash. Then it's on to the red, decals and touchup.

I finished up the spear hafts and leather this past week and started in on the red again. I'm hoping it'll go quicker than last time, as I now know not to highlight it until after the decals are on the shields.

Aside from the red all that's left is the hair, decals, touchup and basing. It'll be tight but I should be able to get them done before next Saturay's game up in New Hampster.

You're army just looks so awesome!
Even the WIPs are beautiful :)
-
After some additional paint sessions (made possible to a hurt wrist and subsequent lack of the ability to climb) the second pokey brigade is all painted up. They're currently sitting in some water to loosen the glue so I can take them off the cardboard and base them up tonight. Not sure if I'll be able to complete the basing tonight what with drying times and what not but either way they'll be ready to go for tomorrow's WM day.

The decals were easier this time around as I saved the shield highlights until after they were on. I'm pretty happy with how all the designs came out but thing the white hawk is my favorite due to the amount on contrast with the red.

The decals are gorgeous. Where did you get them?
-
I made them using various graphics:
http://sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=2262.msg27787#msg27787
And white laser decal paper.
-
Thanks a lot. It seems I missed that part of your thread. Great Job.
-
Great job on those! Do you paint over the edges of the decals to make them blend better into the background?
-
Yep, they crack a lot when you cut them. So I go over the edges with Mech. Red and then highlight as normal. that blends it in pretty good.
-
Your army is fantastic. which army are you going to crush first with this shining high elves?
-
When they were still silver they triumphed over some dwarves last year IIRC. Yesterday they eked out a narrow points victory over the Empire. The army was very pretty; Dave's dice were not. I could hear him cursing them from the next table :P
-
No painting this week, Monday was taken up by conversion and putty work. I finished the conversions I wanted to do on my Silverhelm Command. A gold star to the first person who can spot them all!
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1ezoilhc2w4/TyK0wUg59lI/AAAAAAAAKP4/DgQ0_efHjcs/s640/IMG_0011.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1ezoilhc2w4/TyK0wUg59lI/AAAAAAAAKP4/DgQ0_efHjcs/s1600/IMG_0011.JPG)
I converted up a General as well. I was originally going to go with a the Tyrion model from the SoC character pack but was pretty underwhelmed with the model once I got my hands on it. The sculpting definitely isn't on the same level as the original WM elves. I ended up putting the top of a Griffon Riders helm on one of the character pack Silverhelms. I'm going to try resculpting the eye detail over the weekend, we'll see how that goes. I think it's pretty close to the Warhammer Tryion model, just with more barding. And in 10mm...

A gold star to the first person who can spot them all!
Id say the banner, the dragon head on the pole and the helmet of the commander. Which is most impressive btw!
-
A gold star to Guthwine. Haven't had a chance to finish the Reaver command conversions and the General yet, but I did start painting. The Silver Helms and Reavers are progressing. I started on the horse flesh this week, and have moved on to the manes/tails. Next week I'll be washing them and starting on the armor/cloth hopefully.

-
I'm really enjoying seeing these come together - it's looks like a lot of blood, sweat and tears fiddling with the needles but the results speak for themselves!
-
Only the Silver Helms got attention this week (the Reavers might have to wait as I'm planning on working on some terrain for HAVOC as well). I finished up their manes and started in on the silver touch-up and wash.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2hXvi8MGq7s/TzUiz-w6ISI/AAAAAAAAKQo/qpdLvM-QJsA/s640/IMG_0016.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2hXvi8MGq7s/TzUiz-w6ISI/AAAAAAAAKQo/qpdLvM-QJsA/s1600/IMG_0016.JPG)
I'm planning on working on the other strip tonight (and going back an hitting the feet that I forgot on the first) and then carefully drybrushing them silver one more time for a highlight. Then we move on to the white.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f-2q9PUzQss/TzUi0WHOU-I/AAAAAAAAKQw/vQIDDn4HQxc/s640/IMG_0017.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f-2q9PUzQss/TzUi0WHOU-I/AAAAAAAAKQw/vQIDDn4HQxc/s1600/IMG_0017.JPG)
I finished up the putty work on my commander too. You can't tell from the picture but he now has eyes and the eagle on his helmet looks more like a dragon now. You'll just have to trust me :P. Since they're pretty much Silver Helms I'm going to be playing catch up with these guys so I can finish them up at the same time. The banner bearer was drying silver while this picture was taken.

These are sweet!
Are you thinking of selling any? ;)
I had a go at something similar a few years ago on my brand new laserjet.
Bought the special paper and everything, only for it to melt the fuser unit :(
So after wangling a replacement, never tried it again.
-
Selling the decals or the models? I can put the files I used up online somewhere if people are interested. Not planning on selling the models, no. I'm having a time finishing my own army, let alone someone elses.
I bet it was ink jet paper in the laser printer that caused it to melt.
-
Yeah, those decals are stunning - I'm deathly afraid of trying such a thing. Is it only laser printers who have the precision to create decals of that quality?
If so that's my trusty 4 year old Canon Pixmar out of the picture. :-X
-
I tried ink jet before i tried laser. The ink cracked like crazy. Atleast the laser only cracks near where I cut them out.
-
I would sooooooo buy a lot of the decals.
It's probably the main reason why I haven't started my High Elves - all those shields that need to be painted with a similar pattern for each different unit!
Drop me a PM if you decide to do it.
-
The white was all done on the Silver Helms until I took this picture, then I noticed they have some cloth around the base of their tails like the chariot horses do, that's going to have to be white too.

I should be able to take care of that next week and start in on the red. I'm still not sure what my second decal is going to be for these guys though.

I also did a little bit of work on the command, they're still lagging behind the rest though.

-
Looking good!
Have you considered using a stencil or rubber stamp for the shield designs?
-
Great commands!!
-
Thanks guys. I haven't consider a rubber stamp roth, it might work on a white shield but I don't think it would work on red ones.
I started in on the red this week, this part is going to take awhile. There's all sorts of minor things that are going to end up red and with a lot of them being near the white I'm taking my time as to not make more work for myself.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-znTh5fAJUEY/T1DWWPejdTI/AAAAAAAAKpw/yci2qQS_90c/s640/IMG_0030.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-znTh5fAJUEY/T1DWWPejdTI/AAAAAAAAKpw/yci2qQS_90c/s1600/IMG_0030.JPG)
Hopefully it should be done by next week, then I cam get to the leather, hair and touchup.

-
Hrrm, those command don't look like they're on pennies - are they on washers or MDF counters maybe?
-
1" washers. I'm assuming my opponents will begrudge me the extra 0.2mm when measuring from the base over the legal 25mm round command base.
-
There is no official size of command bases. Neither shape, could be round, rectangular or octogonal if you want. Just choose a point (the point of the sword, the banner or the geometrical center, it is up to you) in the base and make all measurements from this point. So do not worry about the 0.2mm
-
The latest PDF has a section on Odd Size Character Bases on page 63. That's what I was going by.
-
It's just, I have this new high elf army I'm starting - and I'm wondering if I should use 25mm warhammer 40k bases or maybe 20mm square warhammer bases or flames of war ones...
I don't really want to use 2p coins or other metal as it's more easily chipped and heavier than plastic.
So I'm looking at examples like this for guidance. =)
-
Never had an issue with chipping on 2p and they are readily available.
I do undercoat them before I use them though.
-
If you're that worried about chipping take a wire brush to it, that ought to rough it up enough for the primer to adhere.
-
Ooh hadn't thought of that Dave! Good idea! (Is a newbie)
-
Just another 'not had any chipping' comment. 2ps are great, they're the right thickness and add a little weight to the miniatures. I tend to score the top of mine before gluing to give better adhesion with superglue (the 'tails' side of course, I wouldn't dream of scuffing the Queen up). Like Azrael, I undercoat mine (using GW spray) at the same time as undercoating the miniatures.
-
I'm almost done with the red on the Silverhelms, just half a strip left to go on them. After that it's the hair, leather and decals so they're in the home stretch.

I was getting fed up with them though this weekend so decided to work a bit on my characters, I ended up finishing a Wizard.

Absolutely stunning!
I've had my mind set on painting my Helves the usual pale blue and white - but seeing them in red and white like this is inspiring!
-
wow, this mage is really awesome, the paint on the face is superb. So great!
-
Thanks guys. Ya, I wasn't feeling the standard blue and white for these guys Stormwind. The red is more eye catching I think.
-
Really impressive- especially the eyes on the mage. They're done better than many people manage on 28mm models.
-
That mage is fantastic, possibly the best 10mm character I've seen, really inspiring.
-
Thanks guys, here's another one. I painted this guy up last night in between applying coats of Micro Sol to the Silverhelm decals. Yes his eyes are painted, but they were real hard to get.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUpSg3QdPi4/T2M692TggdI/AAAAAAAAK18/HuJ3gOU9IbI/s640/IMG_0038.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mUpSg3QdPi4/T2M692TggdI/AAAAAAAAK18/HuJ3gOU9IbI/s1600/IMG_0038.JPG)
I went with a simple rune for my command. One of the meanings of this one is Lordship so I guess that works for a commander.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZh_sC25Oxg/T2M6-OQWUQI/AAAAAAAAK2E/HVV2Sv_Kyjg/s640/IMG_0039.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZh_sC25Oxg/T2M6-OQWUQI/AAAAAAAAK2E/HVV2Sv_Kyjg/s1600/IMG_0039.JPG)
The red, hair and leather are all done on the Silverhelms and the decals are applied. I went with two white roses for one of them (nothing better then watching some flower toting elves beat up on some Orcs/Dwarves/Dogs of War) and a falcon for the other. I was originally going to go with a sword but on a 3x5mm shield all you could see was a line of white.

Next week I have to finish the shields, touch them up and base them. It'll be tight but they should be done by HAVOC on Friday night.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SekCw-NEBMA/T2M6-k1Q30I/AAAAAAAAK2Q/W8R_O2VR1Ik/s640/IMG_0041.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SekCw-NEBMA/T2M6-k1Q30I/AAAAAAAAK2Q/W8R_O2VR1Ik/s1600/IMG_0041.JPG)

I finished basing my last four spearmen units this week along with the Silverhelms as well. Just in time for HAVOC!

Pokey Brigade Numeral Dos is ready to poke some enemies in the eye.

There was a slight blunder with the Silverhelm's decals. I applied them in such a way that each unit would be made up of identical strips. After a facepalm/panic attack I was releaved to have found the extras I printed. All and all it amounted to little more than annoyance.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kviSx2WRXXU/T2yMKEPx67I/AAAAAAAAK-4/U_u9bLkSGww/s640/IMG_0044.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kviSx2WRXXU/T2yMKEPx67I/AAAAAAAAK-4/U_u9bLkSGww/s1600/IMG_0044.JPG)
The pennants came out alright. I got pretty close to the edges with some of the designs but given that they're supposed to be cloth in the wind I guess it's alright that the designs aren't perfect.

These are stunning and really inspirational. <3
-
Agreed! You've almost single handedly been responsible to my return to 10mm.
-
Beautiful - rich and striking colours. Who says you can't put the effort in on painting 10mm!
The scale of 10mm allows for units made up of proper numbers i.e. a 2 unit Silverhelm brigade = 24 cavalry figures!
Welcome back into the fold.
Dave
-
Thanks guys.
Glad to see people like them and that they've helped to expand the hobby. I've always liked work logs for this reason, it's nice I got to flip it around this time.
-
I picked up where I left off with the Reavers a month or so back. I managed to get the base coats down for the horse flesh and tack. I should be able to get a wash and highlights on them this weekend. After that I'll move on to the flesh, red and white.

HAVOC was this past weekend and I picked up some of the Army Painter flock. I like it because it's not the ultra-fine foam/sawfust powder. Here's my first trial with it. Thoughts? I'm still planning on putting the tufts on as well, but I think it's going to be a lot easier to put this stuff down first.

Also, I was digging through some old models and found my dragons from the 6mm Dragon Lords line. Aside for the wings (too dinky) I thought the Purple Dragon would make an excellent Giant Eagle mount proxy. I've since named him Eagon the Dragle and managed to get a High Elf character off of a horse and on him, complete with headswap. I'm picking up some wings that I think will work for him tonight.

Wait a minute - are you not spraycoating these minis at all? O.O
-
They got a glosscoat and two dullcotes.
-
I've got a couple of thousand points of HE to build and paint for a game, meself. This topic is a huge inspiration and motivation. I don't know if I'd go as far as painting the eyes and printing teeny-tiny decals for the shields, though!
-
Come on! Why not? All the cool kids are doing it!
-
Your army looks spectacular , well done . Once a long time ago i would have painted the eyes in as well . Now unfortunately for me , my eyes are not as good .
Again well done .
Stuart
-
The dragon looks pretty good. Are you going to use some HE draon wings?
-
I found a pair of wings I liked from a Reaper mini. They're sitting on him right now waiting for some putty work.
-
The Reavers are coming along, which is good because I heading out to Adepticon on the 18th. I did the leather flesh, tassles and pantaloons this week. Next up is the white, silver, bows and fletchings.

I still have to convert the banners on these guys too, hopefully I can get to that this weekend.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8oqQfcjH9Vw/T384EvEQElI/AAAAAAAALO0/3wDpuGYMItE/s640/IMG_0054.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8oqQfcjH9Vw/T384EvEQElI/AAAAAAAALO0/3wDpuGYMItE/s1600/IMG_0054.JPG)
I got the wings for Eagon, I think they worked out pretty well. They still need a bit of putty work though, and I think I need to pin his sword arm as it breaks too easily. That'll be a blast...

-
Those wings fit the dragon so good. Also good job with swap of the raider.
-
Wow I am seriously considering copying your paint scheme! though I am too noob to do your fiddly modelling things I think heh.
-
I was pretty happy with how well the rider sat the dragon. Until I put the wings on it looked like it was part of the same model. I had to clip some of the rider's robes to fit the wings in though. I puttied up the dragon over the weekend (and pinned the sword arm, it was a lot easier then I thought) so the robe work is next then the painting.
Copy away Stormwind. Let me know if you're using the new GW paints, I'd like to see how the tones are different if so.
-
I'm afraid that over the past year, despite barely painting anything more than some Epic tanks, I spent £100 on GW paints in anticipation of diving into things... Now I feel gutted as all reports of the new paints are that they are superior, hindered only by the unutterably stupid naming system.
I will be braving the bullshit patter of the GW store in my town though, to buy a handful of new paints, especially for elves both Warmaster and Warhammer - and perhaps for my Space Wolves too. Number 1 is their high pigment white.
Right now - I am trying to find HE colour schemes that really fit what i have in mind. I wanted my army to have - if not a seaguard flavour specifically, one where they look like they're marching across white sand to repel enemies.
I found this test model did someone online and the lack of red really sells it to me. Man, I wish models were cheaper so I didn't feel so self conscious about "test models" x-D
-
That looks damn good, and very doable in 10mm. I wouldn't buy too much into the new paints being "superior". That's just marketing hype. A foundation white/black would be useful though. They've been in the starter sets forever but haven't been available separate yet.
-
Thanks for the encouragement - the foundation white is definitely the only thing I am really desperate for (ceramite white I think it's called).
After having pains undercoating my epic space marine tanks in white - I am considering spray-undercoating my Warmaster Helves in black and working from there so having a foundation white to go with the others I have could be a real boon!
Got about 1000 points all mounted on lollipop sticks and ready to go. ^.^
-
Given how much metal is on the WM elves I'd recommend priming them and then spraying them silver. The only units it wasn't worthwhile on was the Reavers.
-
Nearly done on the Reavers. All that's left is a wash on the gold, highlights on the hair and fetching, and touchup.

For the pennants I went with the classic Elvish Flaming Ying-Yang o' Death and a silhouette of a running horse.

I also finished up the putty work on my other Wizard this week. Everything from his left foot to the bottom of the staff and up is putty. He came out pretty good I think.

The Eagon the Dragle conversion is also done now too. I sculpted some skin in and around the wing gaps, replacement robe ends for the riders and a saddle and tack. I also started putting some paint on him.

Very nice as always, I especially like the wizard, great work. Wouldnt have noticed the puttywork if you hadnt said so.
-
Always good to see a bit o' green stuff with warmaster!
Nice painting.

Greeting from Chicago. The Elves are done enough for Adepticon. I still want to finish basing them, and paint up the dragon and eagles to go along with them. The general's below. I might go back and repaint a few things red and or gold to make him stand out a bit more. I was pretty happy with how the decals came out though.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VzPig5_eXW4/T5DbKjpE-cI/AAAAAAAALQ8/C8J-cU6T8LQ/s640/IMG_0064.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VzPig5_eXW4/T5DbKjpE-cI/AAAAAAAALQ8/C8J-cU6T8LQ/s1600/IMG_0064.JPG)
The second wizard is definitely a step below the first one I did. Not sure what I did to make the white so clean the first time but I couldn't seem to replicate it with this guy.

The Reavers are done as well. There was definitely a lot of details on these guys. Kind of a combination of the chariots and the archers in terms of painting.

This army is simply awesome. Those decals really finish off those minis. Well done.
-
So what did I do this past week? If you guessed "Paint Eagon" you are wrong. If you guessed "Base your army and give yourself Flock Lung" that is correct... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGjOsfV3ar8) I'm not done yet, I still have to get the tufts on the Spearmen, Silverhelms, Reavers and characters, but I got the flock on and glued twice on the whole army.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-12du_aeM9nY/T6PZY8r8NzI/AAAAAAAALRY/ntLaMO96My8/s640/IMG_0064.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-12du_aeM9nY/T6PZY8r8NzI/AAAAAAAALRY/ntLaMO96My8/s1600/IMG_0064.JPG)
Despite what inhaling the stuff may have done to my respiratory health I really like what the Army Painter Green Flock did for the bases. It's grainier that the Woodland Scenics stuff (which I could never get to look right) and works better as thick grass in 10mm I think.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VRip6cvLmQ0/T6PZZIxFXUI/AAAAAAAALRg/O1z4WJvScco/s640/IMG_0065.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VRip6cvLmQ0/T6PZZIxFXUI/AAAAAAAALRg/O1z4WJvScco/s1600/IMG_0065.JPG)
The Archers, Chariots and Bolt Throwers are completely done at this point. As an FYI I'd recommend putting down the flock first then the tufts. I did it the otherway with these and it took a few minutes to get all of the flock worked out of the tufts.

Great basework! A beautiful army to behold!
-
Stunning! Whilst I do love the mage on his fire column - by himself I think he looks amazing! =D
-
That is one VERY impressing army.
Congratulations!!!
In sharp contrast to the heap of metal I play against ;D
-
That's a great looking army! The basing really helps bring it to life. It's also impressive how many foot troops you've painted to that standard without going mad.
-
Dave you have a magnificent army.
Do you usually play with the basic list or use the tournament WTA list?
-
amazing
-
Geat job!!
-
Thanks guys, I hope to finish up the basing next week as well as the Eagle mount proxy and my Eagles by the end of the month. I'm planning on doing a photo shoot for them as well, on an actual battlefield and then putting the army to bed for awhile.
@jchaos - Yep, I use the HE tourney list from Trial Armies. That's 2k, on the nose, of troops.
-
Have you posted your army list somewhere? I would appreciate advice on building a 1500 to 2000 point H. Elf list!
-

-
And we're done.... at least with the first 2k. :P
I finished putting the last few tufts on the bases this Monday. I took some army shots last night and put up a gallery on my blog for those who're inclined to travel across the internets:

-
Awesome! They look great!
-
wow really nice, really nice...
-
Elves kicks ass!
The most beautiful Warmaster army I have ever seen.
Lizardmen salute you!
-
This is stunning!
I am in awe over it, but also feel despair that mine won't have a fraction of this brilliance!
What size pin vice did you use for the silk needles btw? Maybe in the future I will have to do that myself.
-
Thanks guys.
The drill size will depend on the pin you're using, I think mine was around .7 or .8mm.
-
Congratulations to your finished army! As said before, they look awesome.
Thats basically the same list I am working on, I just swapped 2 units of spearmen for a dragon mount. Which reminds me... must paint faster... :D
Do you plan to expand this force or is another project coming up?
-
I do have further plans for the army, just no idea when I'll start in on them (beyond the Eagles I'm currently working on). I'd like to bring it up to 3k by doing half again of what I have here, just as "rares". I'm thinking Swordmaster and White Lion conversions at this point for the Spearmen, Seaguard for the Archers, and converted Dragon Princes and Chariots of Chrace too. Any suggestions for "rare" Reavers and Bolt Throwers?
I also have a true dragon in the works, that's going to take a bit of putty though. And figuring out how to get the paint scheme I want on it up to "centerpiece" quality.
I might try my hand at another WM army before all that though. Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards Dwarves at this point (purely on unit count) but could do Dogs of War, Orcs, Lizardmen or a mystery army that has around the same unit count as DoW/Orcs.
-
OK I am seriously intrigued as to how you plan conversions of White Lions and Sea Guard! Please tell us more!
Viz. Reavers. Just re read the fluff in the High Elves Fantasy rulebook. Unfortunately Reaver Knights are /already/ elite units in the fluff - they are young Ellyrian nobles who tirelessly live off the land for months or years at time, watching the coasts of Ulthuan.
Perhaps you could say your other Reavers are merely horse archers from elsewhere in Ulthuan - and that your "rare" ones are the "true" Ellyrian Reavers?
-
I'm planning on converting Swordmasters into White Lions, it'll involve some putty work for the leg grieves and lion cloaks, along with a weapon swap. Seaguard will probably be easier, with a bow being put on the back of a Spearman.
-
Very impressive army.
The idea of using swordmasters to convert into white lions is interesting- I don't think I'd have the nerve to convert a unit like them.
-
No! Save those poor OOP swordmasters and get some of these instead!
http://www.fighting15sshop.co.uk/400fan22-high-elf-reavers-with-axes-3855-p.asp
-
I've seen those, but they're not close enough for me. I'll be using science to help me with my White Lions and the rest of the alternates.
-
Damn, I was hoping to convince someone to buy them ahead of me to see if they're the right scale... They're even more expensive than GW if I want to put 10 on a base. =-/
-
I have those elves. I will do a size comparison this weekend for you. Eureka miniatures make them.
-
Also if interested i will get them cheaper than that for sure.
-
A tiny update, I've got the eagles based up and ready for painting. I used a 1/16" acrylic rod for the flight stands, and despite covering them up while painting the bases I still got some paint on a few of them. I'm planning on painting them like Golden Eagles, we'll see how that goes next week.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--T5qm7-jSm4/T60gSPviufI/AAAAAAAALWs/iseQPiEdnbI/s640/IMG_0068.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--T5qm7-jSm4/T60gSPviufI/AAAAAAAALWs/iseQPiEdnbI/s1600/IMG_0068.JPG)
-
Very impressive Dave. It's always nice to see another finished army done to a high standard. Personally, I'd push them to 3K before starting on another army as, in my experience anyway, its rare to ever 'go back' to an old army - painting wise.
A 3K list means you can play a 2K list with options..... or it means you can play a larger battle.
Dave
-
Out of curiousity, why did you choose the BOFA eagles rather than the metal ones? Was it the scale that bugged you?
-
The scale and the fact that you can't get the WM Eagles lined up right (their wings are too big).
-
There is configuration that able to fit three eagles close together and bases line up. But you have to beat the riddle or make the Kubic-rubi of the High-Elf Eagles :)
-
Or just mount the eagles on "spurs of rock" to change their height levels and allow them to butt up. Another option is to use transparent glass rod or steel rod to change their heights?
For the real modellers, you could re-position their wings?
Dave
-
The High Elf giant eagles are already on rock mounts, for stability, so the only real option is to add layers to two of the eagle bases so they intersect without getting into each others "airspace". =-P
-
Those conversion ideas sound interesting, Im looking forward to see the result! Good luck with the scienceing. :)
-
Congrats on 2K! I still think they're the most impressive WM army I've seen.
I've had thoughts about White Lion conversions myself, but nothing so drastic as cutting up OOP Swordmasters!
I'll probably cut up OOP Phoenix Guard instead. :P
(Nip off top spike and bottom pole of halberd, add second arm and other greebles with putty)
-

I'm surrounded by monsters! MONSTERS!
:'(

I actually finished Eagon up a week or two ago, but couldn't find any Dullcote until yesterday to finish him up. He's all set to go now though. The eagles are proving more difficult as I can't decide on a good way to paint them.

Everything looks fab! Love the custom dragon... subtle work on those horns.
-
That is masterpice!

Slow week this week. Most of June is going to be slow in the painting department. Here's some Seaguard that I'm working on. I'm got to put a quiver on the guy ion the left, and fill in some undercut areas but I think this will get the idea across. I'm also thinking of doing something special with the helmet.

Here's a musician and standard bearer I'm working on too. Since I only have one of each of these guys I think I'm going to make them Swordmaster command first.

-
That looks so fiddly - are you going to make an entire unit of them?!
-
Two, with science.
-
Great scienceing! They look as if they were designed for it, excellent work.
-
Yes they look great
-
Great conversions. I like your brilliant ideas.
-
Those look great, I look forward to seeing them ranked up once you've laid down some serious science on them!
-
The Dwarves weren't holding my attention much so I swung back towards my first WM army. These Sword Masters have been a long time in coming. I still need to finish up their command but in the meantime I started in on the rank and file for two units worth.

Additionally, I thought it was time to work on something completely superfluous for the army. Namely, casualty counters. What general wouldn't want to represent his own troops brutally hacked apart and left for dead on the battlefield?

That's a really nice army Dave!
Are the Sword Masters from the Character set or did you cut the OOP stripes into pieces? Actually cutting the OOP guys makes a lot of sense, since you can now "create" different stripes.
-
I am intrigued!
-
The SM originated from the character pack.
I am intrigued!
I've got a few more ideas that ought to pique your intrigue even higher. Know what I mean? Nudge nudge, snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, say no more...
-
Work continued on the Sword Masters and markers this past week. I finished the flesh on all of them, washing it and hitting it with two highlights. I also hit the first strip with the white basecoat.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Z0XICfEVzM/UPTR7DoEVeI/AAAAAAAAMRI/O9VRgWfCEhk/s640/IMG_0007.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Z0XICfEVzM/UPTR7DoEVeI/AAAAAAAAMRI/O9VRgWfCEhk/s1600/IMG_0007.JPG)
Next week will see the white finished most likely and on to the red.
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L4a1RwMSqCo/UPTR7nzFlgI/AAAAAAAAMRQ/0ThQyN_iJeM/s640/IMG_0008.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L4a1RwMSqCo/UPTR7nzFlgI/AAAAAAAAMRQ/0ThQyN_iJeM/s1600/IMG_0008.JPG)
-
Exactly how many character packs worth is that? :-X
-
A few. ;)
-
Looking good! Are you going to base them 8 to a stand or more?
-
Planning on 10 per stand, two units worth.
-
Great idea! I can see why you've done it this way, the prices swordmasters seem to be fetching on e bay nowadays!
Dave
-
The basecoat for the white's all done, I forgot how long that step usually takes. I also starting in on the first highlight on one strip of casualty counters as well. I'm hoping to finish up my command conversions for these guys in the coming week.

-
The first white highlight is done on everything, and I finished the second one on the counters. I'm hoping I didn't screw myself here in not doing the dirt first, I'm going to have to be careful when drybrushing it.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XXk3dzAE_eU/UQdLXdebT4I/AAAAAAAAMR4/wV21pqGp4xI/s640/IMG_0011.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XXk3dzAE_eU/UQdLXdebT4I/AAAAAAAAMR4/wV21pqGp4xI/s1600/IMG_0011.JPG)

The Sword Masters still need the final white highlight, but they're in home stretch. After that it's just the red, gold and hair. I definitely have to get going on their command, and my next bit of High Elf conversions.

-
Your dedication is stunning. I'm struggling to finish a single warhammer terrain piece for a friend. =-P
-
Your dedication is stunning.
I've got a closet full of models that would argue with you about that. The High Elves are the exception to the rule.
-
Dave, what silver spray did you use? Mine is terrible and I'm looking for a replacement.
-
Either the Testors or the Model Masters stuff. I got it at Michaels/AC Moore.
-
Ha - I'm a dummy. It didn't even occur to me to just use model paint! I've been using Krylon, just like with my priming. Thanks.
-
So the red took a little longer than I anticipated, I got have off the models basecoated with it in addition to finishing the gold this past week. It was the red on the Sword Masters that took the longest, I tried to take my time on most of it so I didn't have to go back and touch things up.

Given that and what I have left on this stuff I think the end of February is a more accurate completion date. No work yet on the command for them either.

-
That's look great!
-
A late update, but I didn't have much to post on Monday. I finished the red highlights today, all that's left on the Sword Masters is the touch-up and the hair. The counters still need the wood, leather and ground painted though.

I finished up the painting on these guys this week. They're currently getting this first glosscote before I soak them off the strips and get them based. The next you see them they'll be accompanied by some command and all finished up.

-
Why do you need to soak them to take them off the strips?
-
I used white glue to stick them on there. It's water soluble, so soaking them allows me to pop them off no problem.
-
I finished the casualty counters last week, although it's taken me another week just to dullcote them. Once I finish the Sword Master command I'll base them up with those guys and the Dwarf Rangers from last year.

-
I finally finished up my Sword Master command conversions. There's two units worth plus an extra and some Sword Masters for a Hero stand. The musician involved some leg, arm and weapon swaps, and the standard bearer the same plus a head swap and a bunch of putty to fix up the standard.

-
So great, good! I really think your swordmen of Hoeth look brighter than the official mini. And cheaper, for sure.
+1 smart!
-
Absolutely stunning - I don't know how you people glue and use putty at such small scales, I can barely get it to do what I want at 28mm with much swearing.
-
Thanks guys.
@Stormwind - I'm still fairly new to it. Working with small areas is about all I can manage right now (mainly because it's harder to mess up with the conversion being so small). The banner is probably the biggest thing I've used putty on, and I got it away with that because it was just smoothing out a surface.
-
Fantastic diary mate and it will be an awesome looking army when finished. Your Swordmasters are coming along brilliantly...
-
Thanks man.
The Sword Masters are almost done. I just have to finishing painting the bases and then flock them (and fix a few mistakes the macro function showed me). One banner I took from the Warhammer High Elf book, the other is the Alaitoc Craftword rune.

nicely done !
-
Great work Dave. I especially like the command group conversion and the hero base.
-
Those Swordmasters look absolutely stunning mate, great work!!! I love the banner decal as well, very nice indeed :)
-
Thanks guys. Here's some shots of them all based up for Adepticon. Now I need to decide what I'm going to drop from my 2k list to fit them in.

Excellent work Dave....
The army as a whole - and each unit within - is very inspirational!! 10/10
-
Damn those look better than the official units!
-
They look amazing!!!
Blind-
-
Top drawer!
Crisp, clean and very striking.
Dave
-
Remember these guys? There's nearly a formation here, I need to get 10 more ready and then work on the command and the hero for them. I felt bad not bringing anything new (WM-wise) to Adepticon last year, so I want to try to finish these up and maybe the Eagles (finally...).

I'm also working on Dragon Prince conversions (the official models look like crap in my opinion) and I'm still thinking on the Chariots of Chrace and White Lions.
-
Where did they come from?
-
Me, I converted them.
-
How... ON EARTH did you have the patience do to that?
Those are amazing - Lothern Sea Guard?
-
Well... you do one you do them all. ;)
Yep, Sea Guard. I'm counting them as Archers.
-
omg....these are amazing...
-
m8 you are bonkers
How much of those models are green stuff and how much is lead? =D
-
(https://datbase.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/divide-by-zero-blog-safe.jpg)
-
Very nice indeed! Great work. Given they have shields, will you be using them as Archers with 5+ armour? Don't know what points that would work out at though.
-
90, if I remember the points formula I saw. In a friendly game I might trying something like:
5+ armour if they did not shoot/stand in shoot, otherwise 6+ armour. maybe 80/85 points?
-
Very nice convertion
-
Yep. I love them too.
-
They look fantastic .
Stuart
-
It's been awhile since I posted anything Warmaster related. I've been slowly converting these Dragon Princes over the past year. I wasn't a fan of the originals so I modified some Silver Helms with head swaps and dragon "ears" on the horses. No paint yet, I'm hoping to get to them this year though after I finish up my Wrath of Kings Goritsi.

The Sea Guard are still in the works, I just need to finish their command. Then I get to figure out how I'm going to do White Lions and Chrace chariots.
-
Wow, they really look exceptionnal !
-
Ah, such a shame you started painting them, they would have been beautiful, recast.
-
Most impressive! What will you use as a base (if any) for your white lions?
-
I'll likely use the loose Swordmasters. They'll need legs, axes, pelts and a different top knot.
-
Those are great. Are the head swaps from the original Dragon Princes? And did you sculpt the horse 'ears'?
-
Really like those. Your HE army is the certainly best I've ever seen. And it was a pleasure to see it 'for real' a couple of years back. Looking forward to seeing the new units. Eureka do 10mm lions if that's any help.
-
Thanks guys. The heads are from one of the mounted heroes, and the ears are from the same head. I just removed them and cleaned them up. The only putty was on those with the leveled lances, extra cutting was involved.
-
Wow. So that mounted hero will be pretty rare from now on then :P
-
It just means there'll be a surfeit of headless horsemen ;-)
-
Headless headless-horsemen.
-
So that's what, 24 packs of High Elf characters ransacked? =-P
-
http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=2262.msg56374#msg56374
-
Well people have done similar things to make up a Hoeth unit. =P
-
Just out of curiosity- why not cast the heads? I'm pretty sure you know people with the skills.
It's also a bit of a shame that there's no cast of the completed models, though that would take away their 'uniqueness' a bit.
I'm looking forward to the finished painting, and your next crazy conversions ;D
