I was browsing elsewhere and ran across the new WHFB model of the Arachnarok Spider. Basically a giant spider with a howdah on back for the Gobbos/Orcs to fight from. I might have to find some Spider models and see what I can come up with. Very cool looking model - has got me thinking of other possible units that could be created for armies using a large mount. Here is the link if anyone wants to see pictures:

Hehe that looks great! thanks for sharing and show us what had you though for the warmaster conversion!
Sometimes I use a giant spider-centaur for the goblin army list. The miniatures I think is an old ral parhta figures. I have a shot in the jchaos warmaster proyect log. I use the stats of the undead sphinxs to represent the God-spider :)

I've got a giant squiggoth in my OG army :)

Sounds like one of the monsters from the Birthright setting. I've got one sitting in my bag of 'models that I bought during my brief dalliance with non-GW games that are now unlikely to ever get painted never mind played with'. I imagine that quite a few people have such bags of figures, I tried out Warzone as an alternative to 40K for example, but my attempt to save money was the biggest waste of money I've ever made, the game was bloody rubbish...
Anyway, moving on somewhat. You can be sure that every new Warhammer army release will include something big and nasty like this. Its just a shame that we never did, and likely never will see the opportunity for Warmaster to be the point of introduction for these sort of units as it obviously makes the most sense for that to be the case...

I think I found a suitable model from Reaper's Legends series - have a trio on the way. Will post in the proper forum when I get started on the project...now back to the High Elves.

Hi,
I am setting up a production of Goblin spiders at the moment. Hoepfully soon I can offer them.
Cheers,

Please let me know, I was hoping to find some Goblin Spider Riders. Thanks!

Started messing around with this project yesterday. I found some good cheap giant spiders from the Reaper Legends line. The first spider I took in a direction that hit me as I was looking at the bits I had. This one has a platform for a crew, with a stolen High elf repeating bolt thrower mounted in the rear. I cut down the bolt thrower and used the bits in other areas - there is a seat on the front of the contraption for a driver and room for 1-2 Orcs/Goblins in the rear with the bolt thrower. So, kind of a mobile artillery unit. Here is what I have so far - might do a little fiddling before I really get it done.

Looks good.
Any thoughts on stats?
-
Not sure on that yet - if it is turned around and bearing - it can shoot the bolt thrower like the High Elf version (without the +1 the High Elves get). Looks like the spider has decent armor and it definitely causes terror. Will have a bit of a think and get back to that...

Looks good so far. I'm planning something similar using GW's current plastic spider-rider spiders which are almost identical to the big monster version that's about to be unleashed. Rules-wise, if you don't want something altogether new/unofficial, it could be a mount for a Goblin Shaman (i.e. just a fancy character stand), or a 'count-as' giant perhaps?
-
I think the other two spiders will be more of a mounted rider situation - monster sized Spider with riders. I like the idea that you posted above there.
I've got to find a sitting or straddling Orc/Goblin for the front seat on this one - any ideas?
-
The goblin chariot crews are ideal for this sort of application.

Just a suggestion for the stats and my humble opinion: I would go for the stats similar unit (that is tested), and you can save some precious games and discussions about if it is too powerful or too weak or discussions. Then if you would like to make it unique, think in single special unit to represent something or the essence of the unit, forget the details that is not 28mm.
a sugestion for the giant spider could be: the same as Tusks or elephants. And also... spideres moves fast, so once per battle could move 30cm....
Another posibility is that the spider could enter in woods.
By the way, great choice of miniature, I also love Reaper Miniatures range to include in 10mm games. Good prices and also good sculpting!

Don't start the whole monsters in woods debate again please ;)

Okay - made some good progress on this during the afternoon. I like the way that the spider with howdah/bolt thrower turned out. I also based one of the spiders in preperation of rigging a saddle or some such on it. Here are some more pictures:
Same two angles as before:

Here is the pair mounted on the bases - custom sized 60X20mm from some leftover movement tray pieces.

Here is a High Elf Hero and entourage bravely preparing to engage a monster spider...

Unfortunately they do not see the danger lurking behind them...

I like that scurry movement idea...maybe it's allowed at a -1 Command instead of once per game...that might make it too fast.

Hello,
my first spiders arrived and are available for sale.
I will provide some pictures soon.

I am thinking of making my own spider too - good timing for me as I have been collecting a small horde of forest goblins.
I was just going to use the Lizardman Stegadon rules and points and only field it in larger games?

Why don't use it as a Giant proxy? It would be fun bearing in mind Goblin's Cm and permanent 'Giant goes wild' condition of the subject.
-
It takes up 3 normal bases like a stegadon, so a stegadon's rules make sense to me. They're also both large creatures with howdah's.
Thanks for the idea MiniPatton, I think I'll create my own version at some point (and will probably use a Stegadon's rules as well).
-
looks great
GW also make spiders for LotR that i think might be suitable for conversion as well
-
I might use the Stegadon stats for ease of use - though I might decrease the effectiveness slightly, my thinking is that a Stegadon would be a little bit tougher of a creature. I found some really good spiders to use to create my own spider riders as well - from the Reaper familiars pack. In the same pack, I also got some snails that would work perfectly with 10mm riders on them as well...need to decide which race should have snail riders.
My thinking is one of the following:
Dwarves
Wood Elves
Dark Elves
If I did a gnome or halfling army that might be better suited for these.
