Title: Just starting on warmaster.. lookign for some help :)
Post by: papasmrf667 on June 04, 2009, 05:54:08 AM
alright so i have just read through the rules. I am now very excited to start out. i don't know anyone around here who plays so i am planning on getting two armies both at 2K so i can teach some other people in my gaming group.
The lists that interest me the most are:
Skaven
Bretonia
High Elves
Araby

Eventually i will prolly cave and get all 4 but which 2 would be best to start with? Sample army lists would be awesome! :)

thanks guys i appreciate the feedback!

High Elves and possibly Chaos Mortal are perfect for beginners.

Araby is also very nice to play.

Really beautiful models, a touch of empire army but no war machines and some very unique troops like elephanst, camel riders and flying carpets.

I like them and if I find time this weekend I wil make some pics and post them here on the board

Regards
Claus

Great plan !!  more so to actualy go 2k, as you will avoid some of the (minor) issues that can occur at playing eg. only 5000 pts

Although I can see the appeal of some of the newer lists, it will probably be easiest to start of with two of the basic armies. My suggestion would be High Elves and Chaos (both very compact armies), or probably even better High Elves and Ors & Goblins. O&G give you a wide range (the widest ??) of troops, and they play real different then High Elves. Additionaly you can easily proxy the O&G for say breatonians or kislev (both been done before even at tournament level games).

As for sample armies, if you start of with the mandatory stuff in the Army Selector you will automaticly have your basic army, and from there on you simply flesh it out with more mandatory units and optional ones till crate an army you like based on troops on table, fluff or simply feel look good.  The selectors dont realy allow you to create either a very bad, or a real cheese army. Just start with something that fits your model collection and get a feel for the army, and then adjust to need. The only "beginners" problem you can fall in to is taking to many characters. Unlike its bigger sibbling (WHFB) the characters in WM are a support cast. You will need some, but you dont need to stock up on them, nor on Magic Items.
MI's are nice to have and usefull to bring you up to full allowable points, but not gamewinning, and points spent there could maybe get you an additional unit, which helps your BreakPoint.

I am in the Kansas City area for the summer but i will be back at KSU in the fall. Is 2k the common sized games?

Yes, most games are around 2000 pts.

1000 pts games tend to be over fast and the side that charges first (most of the times armies with lots of cavalry) has a very good chance of winning because breakpoint is so low.
So size for standard games varies between 1500 to 2500 points.

1000 pts are perfect for getting into the rules and to get a bit of a feeling for the game mechanics.
3000 pts on the other hand can bring some nasty units in an uncomfortable high number, ie 3 cannons, 3 giants ...

But that shall not restrict your creativity in any way. Some scenarios might be perfect to be played with 1000 points on one side.
And I played some very funny multiplayer games with 4000+ pts on each side (although those tend to get a little chaotic from the middle of the game on. I remember a game where two players already finished round 5 when the other two were still in round 4.  :))

Gerald

i have played Warhammer fantasy alot and unit choice is a huge deal in that game. is it the same in warmaster or could i pretty much choose whatever i want as long as it gets me to the points limit?

Well, that's not easy to say without knowing which army your playing.

But I think I can say one thing: In comparison to Warhammer Fantasy there is no game-winning unit that's a must have.  ;D  (Although some say that in Warmaster cavalry is quite mighty - but my experience says that just taking lot of cavalry still does'nt win you the game).

There are units that are quite tough (Stegadon, Dragon Ogres, Dragon Riders) but on the other hand they are so expensive pointwise that some of them you will not even see too often in battle.

When building an army of your own you should be aware of the Minimums and Maximums that come with the army list. I for my part bought three flame cannons when I began with my empire army not realising that at 2000pts you are only allowed to field two of them (I never painted the third one until today ;))! I also would buy all the Minimum units I would need for a 2k army.
And there are a few units that are not too useful because they are a bit too expensive pointswise. For example you won't see Steamtanks in battle too often, Dragon Ogres too, the Chaos Spawn is a very shy creature in the Warmaster-World as well as Dragon Riders.
But besides that the rest is your choice alone. Some players try to play shooty, defensive armies, some other try to be fast-moving and aggressive, some go for high breakpoint while others prefer high quality armies - whatever you like (of course you cannot play all styles with all armies).
I would recommend you look onto the Brumbaer's Site as you'll find an army generator you can download for free there. You can play around to see what army list seems good to you. Then you could put the army list up here again and collect our 2 cents :).

Greetings,
Gerald

I didn't know you could have flame cannons in an Empire army  ;)

Seriously though, Gerald is right buy all the minimum troops for your army and then expand from there to suit your playing style.
Also try using the printable tiles from the yahoo group http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/gw-warmaster/
This allows you to tweak your lists to suit your playing style without spending any cash on models you will never use again.
That said, I have 3 steam tanks in my empire army as I just love the models but they can die quite quickly if you are not careful :)

if you look at the Army selectors you will notice that you need to take a certain minimum numbers of character and units, and that for some units you are limited to a certain maximum (per 1000 points). Obviously there are still margins for manipulation  8)   but if you stick to the selectors (which most people do for normal = non scenario games) your armies will be fairly decent.

Darn! Hellfire Cannon of course. That's from playing too many armies...  :)
