Title: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 17, 2009, 09:12:36 PM
Greetings some of you may remember my work from the old forum if not I'll try and dig up some old photos later.

I hadn't painted a Warmaster figure in a long while till today when I saw the forum was back I sat down and painted my Ogre Hunter hey it's only been knocking around for over a year.

Here's the "green" as a reminder

And the painted version

Not yet based as I haven't worked out what sort of base I want yet.

Here's the Rhinox riders I painted before:

The bases have been stripped since as I wasn't happy with them so they need basing as well.

I'm going to try and do somemore work on the Ogres and hopefully post some more pics soon.

C&C welcome as always

Oh here's Goldtooth he's had more work since this pic.

Here we go again  ;)
I am trying to curb my purchasing of new armies and now you start a thread with great miniatures like this!

As always Dave great work, as inspirational as always.

Fantastic!  Awesome! Amazing!  Inspirational! :o

Please keep posting your pictures as you work, although like azrael71, I worry about the effect you may have on my finances!

I just signed up specifically to reply to this thread. I'm a big fan of small scale sculpting & in particular painting & this is some of the finest going.

Keep up the good work - its an inspiration!

Cheers,

Thanks all

I've finished the butcher this morning

The "green"

and painted

I'll finish the cauldron and some skulls for the base later he'll be put on a 40mm base like all the Heroes.

Here's the green from the Rhinox's (which are my own sculpts).

Just the Tyrant to do to get the command stuff done I'll probably have a look at him tomorrow. At some point I plan to add a second Butcher and a Thunderlord on Rhinox but these will do for now it's a shame the GW pulled the BOFA trolls as this is what I used as the base for the conversions it means the chances of doing a unit of maneaters is now limited.

Now all you need is a semi official army list  ;)
How many points are you aiming for?
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 18, 2009, 06:35:16 PM
If only  ;D mmm I currently have 2290 points of miniatures not including Goldtooth and that includes 2 units of Rhinox riders (if said army list existed  ;))

I've undercoated the Tyrant ready to start painting in the morning I'll be up at 8 for the grand prix so I'll be able to get a good run at it.

(insert Hal9000 voice here )"Hello Dave..."

Holy @#$%^&*!!!!  man that is fan - freaking- tastic!!!  the detail is outstanding! i had to remind myself what scale these minis were when i was looking at these, cuz with the amount of detail on them they almost look like they are the scale of regular Warhmmer figures and not the smaller warmaster scale.  Dude, it almost makes me wish that you lived here in San Diego so i could commission you to do some stuff for me.

keep up the work and ill keep checking back in for more updates....

Very nice and very original!

The sculpitng is superb. Do you have conversions/special-units-made-by-you of other armies?
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 19, 2009, 07:25:41 PM
Jchaos79 yeah I have other conversions for other armies my Daemons have alot of conversions I'll dig out the pics at some point.

Chaos Rabbit I've pretty much taken a "warhammer" approach to painting these as they're detailed enough for it so some wet blending washes glazes etc.

Right Tyrant time,he took much longer than I thought he would about 8 hours or so but the fur and horns took forever to get right.

The "green"

The sculpt was inspired by the image of the tyrant on the Warhammer army book.

Painted

Managed to do a little of the base as well as he's on a rock to make him bigger than the others. Wasn't sure about the green trousers but the other two had the red and blueish trousers so he had to have green - I'm using these 3 colours on the ogres trousers as you can see from the Rhinox riders. Just a note on the skin tone he looks paler in real life I just can't be bothered setting up the light tent right now also I've gone for a "human" skin tone rather than the greyish Ogre tone for 2 reasons firstly I don't like the grey and second warmaster figures look better with brighter tones anyway.

All three command figures together

Thats the command done bar the bases so its on to troops I might do the Gorgers next as they're the same BOFA troll figures as the command without any conversion - they look like feral ogres anyway or I'm tempt by the slave giant.

Superb, truly inspiring stuff. I was thinking of starting a thread on my Lizardmen but they don't hold a candle to this lot! Looking forward to seeing more. :D

These are really outstanding! Its unbelievable how much details you got on these tiny tiny miniatures! (both painting and sculpting!) Kudos!
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 20, 2009, 11:34:57 PM
pw post away lets see those lizardmen.

Right I've been at the plasticard and green stuff tonight and ........

Brettonian Grail Reliquae

Candles in 10mm are a nightmare!! I went for a horse drawn shrine as it's easier to do and I think its more fitting for a Grail Knight. The shrine has a flagstone effect and the chair is shaped like a fleur de Lie but it doesn't show up to well in the pics. I'll base the shrine on 40mm x 40mm base and keep the third stand seperate that way it's still practical to use but the unit will have to stay in column but thats not much of an issue.

I have no plans to paint this yet just got it in my head to convert it.

Here's the Trebuchet I converted before as it's no longer available

Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects

More marvellous stuff, I can't even begin to imagine sculpting at this scale and your stuff looks amazing. Do you sculpt professionally or is this just something you do for fun? Either way it looks marvellous, certainly looks like pro stuff to me.

I've made a start on my first base of skinks (my first ever WM figures) and as soon as they're done I'll stick some pics up. They're a test really to see if I like (and can) paint 10mm stuff. If they go well I expect I'll be ordering up an army. Certainly the models are nice.
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 22, 2009, 12:17:14 AM
Nope not professional just something I do for fun, I'll never forget being told by GW staffer when Warmaster was released that there was no way you could do conversions at this scale so I had to prove him wrong.

Skinks are a good unit to start on nice details but not over elaborate.

Well I said I wouldn't start painting the Reliquae for a while but there is absolutely nothing on TV tonight so ..........

Still very much painting in progress the details show up better now. I tried for a sort of marble effect on the seat to keep the stone effect going.

Wow Dave C,

very interesting and original. Have you think about stats or rules to use the Reliquae in the game?

keep on the good working!

Thanks all.

I should have more stuff done by the end of the weekend but I'm mostly working on a Salvar Chem Dog Imperial Guard army for 40k at the moment so updates my be a bit sparse for a little while.

I posted the Dragon Ogre shaggoth in the Chaos Dragon thread but here he is again

He'll get a coat of paint tomorrow.

Most of rest has been seen before but I'll put them back up again.

Here's my Skaven Verminlord (he still isn't based nearly 4 years on as I sold the skaven army and I hadn't decided on a basing scheme)

More Greater Deamons:

Found some pics I've never shown before

first my finished Daemon Beasts of Khorne.

Next Daemon Beasts of Nurgle - these are Heresy miniatures with a little conversion work I couldn't post them before as they're not GW minis

And finally Daemon Beasts of Slaanesh and Tzeentch to finish these have been seen before:

I've got some criticism...
What took you so long to paint the shaggoth  ;D
But seriously great work as always.

What do you have planned next?
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: jchaos79 on May 17, 2009, 07:01:03 PM
Dave very impressive,

I think you should be working on some manufacture as sculptor and making lots of 10mm ranges!  :D as customer I would buy your figures for quality and originality  ;D

Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on May 18, 2009, 03:09:58 AM
Thats the funny thing if I'd painted him when I converted him he wouldn't have turned out so well (even if I do say so myself  ;D) same with the Ogres. I've noticed the progression in my painting over the years from putting up older pics. I've spent alot of time learning wet blending and glazing techniques over the last year or so on 28mm scale minis and now I'm transferring that back although somewhat simplified to my 10mm work - which just makes painting units/armies even longer! but with the Ogres I'm determined to keep up the level of painting throughout as the larger size of the Ogres allows for more detail.

Mmmm next well I have a slave giant prepped for painting but I'm not sure yet Gorgers could also be an interesting unit to paint.

Cheers Jchaos79 but I've tried 10mm sculpting from scratch and it's a pain it's not so much the details It's the 10mm dollies are just to damn fiddly to make. I much prefer to modify or convert existing minis although I do have some scratch sculpts in my collection, Greasus Goldtooth for example is entirely scratch scupted but he was built on a 28mm dolly so it was somewhat easier. Dollies are wire armatures sort of like skeletons in case anyone doesn't now what I'm talking about.

Right these are my last Warmaster pics for awhile my IG army ain't going to paint itself.

Some of you will remember my Goblin Doom Diver and Pump Wagons from way back when well I cast some recently and I've just painted a unit of each

Goblin Doom Divers:

Pump Wagon:

The pump wagon needs some crew. The Goblin chariot crew fit on it but I have none at the moment.

All kneel at the shrine fo saint dave  :-*
These are absolutely outstanding.
These are among your best pieces, but then again whatever you decide to model and paint is always beyond professional standard.

Looking forward to anymore WM stuff you do and good luck with the IG grunts :)
Although tyranids are the way to go in 40k you know ;)

Beatuiful,

when you say "cast" did it means that are metal models?

good work Dave
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on June 01, 2009, 11:34:17 PM
Yes they are metal castings they originally started as plastic and greenstuff minis but I cast them to make a few more.

Here's some early pics they changed a little after these pics:

Superb stuff  :), they're spot on translations of the WH miniatures and they just make me all the more excited about the Ogre Kingdoms project.
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects

Alright one more unit before I do some IG

Finished Grail Reliquae

The Reliquae is an upgrade for 1 unit of peasants so I modelled it within a unit of peasants which I've painted more like Grail Pilgrims. I've put the Reliquae on a 40 x40mm base rather than just do the unit as 3 stands as it allowed me to model the shrine as I wanted it. The smaller stand allows me to remove lost stands as required.
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on June 05, 2009, 03:53:56 PM
Here's a better picture of my scratch built Trebuchet. I deliberately darkened the picture so that the wood grain shows up. I won't be painting this anytime soon Alexey just wanted a better picture of it to show how to build one now that the official mini is OOP.

I know it's a little inaccurate as in the real world this wouldn't be able to fire but hey this is a table top game and things are over exagerated for effect. He also reminded me about my Goblin Spear chukkas so I'll finish them soon.
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects

The Pump Wagon finally has a crew:

Same wagon copied 3 times

The Spear Chukka again as the last picture is a little blurred

Picture of a WIP Brettonian Hippogriff:

Still lots of detail to add (and a rider) but I'm happy with the overall shape of it. I was asked to do this as a commission I generally don't do commissions unless the subject really interests me. I haven't even accepted the commision yet (thats a terrible tease isn't it!) but I'll be in contact with the person to let them know soon.

Are you going into business Dave ;)
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects

Not yet Mick.

I've more or less finished the Hippogriff itself. I have the rider ready he'll be pinned in place and I'll need to resculpt his legs.

The wings make it really hard to get a good picture as the camera doesn't know what to focus on.

Here's a pre green stuff one - I'm making one for myself as well I'd only regret it later if I didn't!

It's made from a Eureka Warhawk and 2 Old Glory Horses (the back and front are from different horses. The wings needed a good bit of modification.

The finished Brettonian General on Hippogriff (more or less).

There's one or 2 details I might add, I want to put an emblem on the shield but the greenstuff just won't stick to it at the moment. Hopefully I can get my own to turn out like this one.

The Ogre project has not been forgotten, ebob still hasn't restocked the armatures yet I could make my own but his suit the sculpts I want to do better.

Thanks,

Plans mmm another one of these for myself - different rider (the hero with the mace and tower helmet was hoping to use the general but he's to much work), slightly different talon pose and slightly bigger body (learnt alot from the first one very happy with it but there's one or 2 things to improve)

IG Colonel
IG Valkyrie

actually lots of IG  :)

Last picture I got the emblem on the shield and added horse ears which I'd forgotten about  ::)

UPDATE:

Definitely the last picture  :-\

I was asked to add a helmet if possible so I got it on the waist. I couldn't fit a brettonian helmet so I modified another one instead.

Thats it done finished (I think)

It took a while but it finally finished this fine model. I tried my best to do the model justice with the paintjob, I hope you like it. :)

I took this as a reference for the griffon:

The only thing I dont like with this model is the flexible rod, which makes it impossible to paint without touching the model but other than that its perfect.

Excellent looks great he painted up well, glad you liked him. I particularly likethe freehand axe details. The flexy clear rod does make holding him a bit awkward but it's far less likely to break in future if it takes a knock and having a see through rod on flying units looks better than a black rod. Thanks for posting the picture.

I just have no imagination, thats why I ended up painting my knights after the WHF army book. :)

The rod surely is more comfortable for gaming thats true. Hope to see some new greens soon. :D

I've drifted out to page 3 so I'll have to rectify that.

I haven't really done much sculpting or painting recently as I've been too busy but I'm on my christmas holidays so I've had a chance to pick up the sculpting tools again.

I've managed to sculpt the other 2 Ogre characters I needed.

First up the second Butcher.

I kept the design similar enough to the first one just swapped a few details around.

The second piece is the Thunderlord (Bruiser on Bull Rhinox).

I went for a Steppe/Mongol type look as it seemed appropriate. I wanted to put some reins in his right hand but there was nowhere for them to connect to so I left them off. I've added armour to the Rhinox's head to make him stand out from the regular Rhinox.

I'll hopefully get them painted over the next week or 2 The various details will show up better then and I may even try and push on with more of the army as well (time permitting).

If anyone has some BOFA trolls they are willing to part with please let me know I could do with some more. I'll pay cash or trade for them.

Apologies to anyone that PMed me and didn't get a reply I haven't checked my account in awhile, I'm not taking on any commission work at the moment I just don't have the time.

C&C welcome as always

Great work as always, Dave.  Some of the armor looks a little smooth, and may come to life a little more with some battle damage.  A nick or two in the weapons and that belly plate, for example.

Have you seen Eureka's 10mm war rhinos?  I assume you have.  They look ideal for your projects.

Cheers!

Thanks, Yeah I've seen the Eureka Rhinos but I haven't ordered any as I had already sculpted my own to the size I wanted for the Ogres (although the maine is a bit to big on mine) At some point I must get some to see how they compare size wise but they make a great alternative - still left with the problem of sculpting the legs though  :'( I used ebob Dwarf dollies to make the leg armatures so that I have something to work over.

I always sculpt very smooth armour for some reason it's just my sculpting style when it's painted it'll look a lot more worn. It looks like it will be next week before I get around to the painting.

Only 3 months late but I finally finished the Bruiser and Butcher this evening.

Second Butcher:

Fairly similar to the first Butcher just a few little details different. I had intended to give all the characters different coloured trousers but the red just seems to fit for the butchers so I kept them red.

Bruiser on Bull Rhinox:

I hope the details show up better now that its painted. I had orginally planned to do the saddle cloth in red and Gold but it wouldn't work with the purple trousers so I went for green and gold instead.

All 5 Command pieces together:

Sorry it went a bit out of focus here and there.

Thats all the characters I'll ever need finished only Greasus left to do but he is for later. I have the slave giant half done and the gorgers are undercoated so I hope to have more to show soon. I'm planning to concentrate on Warmaster for a while so hopefully I'll have more frequent updates.

C&C welcome as always.

I've seen some fantastic WM stuff on here but I think this army is my favourite. Not only are your conversions/sculpts brilliant representations of the WHFB models, but your painting is also spot on.

Of course, seeing all this good stuff reminds me that I'm still waiting to hear on your once-mentioned plan of sculpting up an army for the rest of us to use!
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects

Cheers pw, the Warmaster scaled Ogres are great for painting just big enough to do some detailed work but small enough to hide any errors or lazy bits.

As for producing the army for sale I haven't given it much more thought. Thats not say I'm not ever doing it, it's just not part of my plans for now. I may skip my summer holiday this year to save money and if I'm at home for 2 weeks it might be an interesting project to fill my time.

You've just reminded me that I actually have another Bruiser ready for sculpting:

This shows how I go about turning a BOFA hill troll into an Ogre character. The legs are filed down, the head and arms have been replaced with ebob hobbit/dwarf armature bits. I'm in no rush to finish him I have more than enough characters but I do want another bruiser on foot to give me the maximum flexibility when choosing characters.

Any Ogres I may produce will be fully sculpted by me not conversions of existing minis.

I've finished the Slave giant (just need to base him) and I'm half way through the Gorgers so I'll hopefully have pictures next week.

I picked up the final Bruiser last night and started adding some details. I finally called it a night at 4 this morning and finished him this evening. He's is totally different to my original concept which was based on the Tyrant with the great weapon. The only thing thats remained is the great weapon. He started evolving into a pirate and then ended up more like an Empire Maneater so I swapped the club head for a spare war altar piece and gave him an empire shield gut plate. There's lots of little details that probably won't show up properly until he's painted like the rings and the eagle and scroll work on the shield.

Thats it absolutely no more Characters!!!

This is probably my favourite log on this site... Your sculpts are great and very detailed, and you have painting skills to match.

I just recieved some of your goblin warmachines through the mail- The pieces are very well done and I can't wait to paint them (they even impressed my girlfriend for a second- it's been a long time since she's looked at a model with an expression other than woe)
How do you go about casting these?
Title: Re: [WM] DaveCs various warmaster projects
Post by: DaveC on April 09, 2010, 04:05:53 PM
Thanks all I appreciate the comments. jchaos it was the hat that really set the character of the model. It's from the Empire greatswords kit. I tried sculpting a pirate hat and I was happy enough with it but when I tried on the empire hat that was it.

Glad you like them Geep thats probably the last of them I'll be able to cast the molds have started to warp so it's very difficult to get a proper cast done.

I use a 2 part RTV silicone to make the mold. The molds are done in 2 pieces, the green is set into plasticine with one half exposed. A box is built around the piece  (i use lego for the box) to hold the silicone while it sets. The silicone is poured and allowed to cure for 4 to 6 hours. The plasticine is removed from the other side and the mold is coated with release agent (otherwise the silicone would just stick to other half and trap the green) The box is reset and the other half is poured and allowed to cure. Thats the mould done you need the cut pouring channels and air vents into the mold.

Here's a picture of my Rhinox mold:

The protruding bits help to align the mold and hold it together while casting.

I cast in white metal using gravity casting. I don't have a centrifuge and couldn't justify the cost, I lose very little detail gravity casting but then I've had lots of practice. I've tried resin but it's not great at this scale and I like how metal sets very quickly. The molds are only temporary and will warp/burn out over time.

Hirst arts has a good tutorial if you want more detail.

http://www.hirstarts.com/moldmake/moldmaking.html (http://www.hirstarts.com/moldmake/moldmaking.html)

I still haven't based the Slave giant but here he is prebasing:

I keep getting distracted by other things (Damn you God of War 3!). I've been painting some warhammer scale Empire stuff this week so nothing else has been done. I have the shortest attention span and just seem to keep jumping from project to project. I have no idea how I ever managed to paint 4500 points of Daemons but I do have another 3000 points to paint  :'(

No idea when my next update will be as I'm really liking working on the larger scale at the moment

Well I'm returning to Warmaster with a new Nippon army using Kallistra's new Samurai range.

This is a test piece for the colour scheme, it's a bit rough in places as it was more about getting the scheme right than being overly neat.

I hope to have some painted units to show in the next week or 2.

Not just a shameless bump I actually have one or two bits to show.

In exchange for some BoFA trolls I've agreed to convert a Brettonian Hero on Hyppogriff and Ogre Hunter with Sabretusks for Rolgan.

Here's the Hyppogriff

The Warhammer wasn't intentional. The sword arm broke just as I was finishing him so I had to improvise. I had to pin the shaft into the wing as the arm is too small to support it. I could have just added a lance but a hero needs something  that stands out. Originally I did a great axe but we settled on a warhammer. I also recently got some 1.6mm rigid clear plastirod so the bendy flying stand problem Guthwine had won't happen again.

The Hunter is prepped but no sculpting has been done yet. Rolgan opted for a cleaver over the club.

I've finished painting my first unit of Gorgers (the ones I had prior to getting the others off Rolgan). Still to be based (nothing new there!). They where painted in the exactly the same colours as the slave Giant.

And finally an Araby Wizard just for fun. If anyones seen sigur's araby I pretty much copied those colours.

I'm not really working on any Warmaster stuff at the moment but it's nice to pick up the odd piece every now and again. I now have 7 Malifaux Wendigos so hopefully I'll have the last 2 soon enough to paint a unit of Yhetees.

This is the finished Ogre Hunter for Rolgan.

The skull is different to my original one as tried to copy it and after 7 or 8 failed attempts I decided to wing it but I really like this version.

There will be no more Ogres and there probably won't be anymore updates here either. I'm going back to university for the next 3 years part time to get a degree for work. So with a full time job and part time college I just won't have the time to work on this stuff anymore.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
