Hi,

GothiComp 2011 has started!

Following are the rules for GothiComp 2011, feedback appreciated:

Rules GothiComp 2011.

This is the seventh annual GothiComp, and will be run in a similar way to last years event. A very slight alteration of the fleet category has been made.

The Goal
The general aim of this competition is simply to encourage players to get painting and show off what they can do. I encourage people to enter no matter how good or bad their painting and converting skills are.

The Deadline
This competition will open Sunday may 1, 2011, and the deadline for submissions is Sunday 31st July 2011, 4pm (CET time).

The Categories

General note: we encourage new ships not been shown in a previous edition of GothiComp. Of course vessels that have been completely repainted are allowed again.

The Single Ship/Squadron entry
Each separate entry should consist of a single miniature to be used for Battlefleet Gothic (however, note that conversions, scratch builds and even vessels from outside manufacturers are welcome). The only exception to this is:

- If the vessel is a light cruiser or equivalent, one or two vessels may be submitted as a single entry in the same photograph. Space Marine Strike Cruisers can be treated as light cruisers.

- If the vessel is an escort or equivalent, then the submission must consist of between two and six vessels in a single picture.

Aside from this stipulation, the entry is largely down to the participant.

The community will vote on the entries as usual.

In addition, there will be a 'conversion prize'. This will be a token prize for one entry based on the skill and style of any conversion work which has gone into the vessel, in an effort to encourage creativity in modelling as well as painting. This will be judged by a select panel. All entries are automatically submitted into both competitions simultaneously. The judges for the conversion prize are myself, Warmaster Nice and Cybershadow.

The fleet category
Each separate entry should consist of a fleet worth at least 500 and a maximum of  2000 points following the standard BFG list or equivalent (the 2010 drafts are allowed even if GW has not uploaded them by then) .

The Prizes

Single Ship Category:
* complete Lance Dauntless, a couple of regular IN prows, around 6 lance battery bases, IN LB modules, some chaos escort bridges, a couple of prow rams, and a bunch of antenna.

Conversion Category:
* 5 resin voss prows (Imperial Cruiser) (+ some bits from me)

Fleet Category:
* Tyranid Hive Ship (Conversion), 2 Tyranid Razorfiend cruisers (in blisters) + spare Kraken tentacles

The Pictures
You should submit a single picture per entry, no more. Each photograph should be no more than 3 megabytes large. The pixel width should not exceed 800 x 600.

The Submission
To submit a picture of your vessel to this competition, you simply mail it at: comps@tacticalwargames.net

Make sure the header of the email contains the following: ship name / class name

Note that you do not have to be a member of the http://www.tacticalwargames.net boards to enter this competition but in order to vote you will have to sign up.

We will compile a gallery of the entrants which will be available online. This gallery will remain as a permanent fixture to the site, and so you will be able to browse the pictures in the future. Please note, I am sure that there will be a rush in the last 24 hours before the end of this competition, therefore please don't wait until the last few hours if you can avoid it.

The Voting
Voting will take place here on these boards. Entries will be split into heats. The winner of each heat will go through to the next round until a winner is determined. Please note that entries will be placed into heats in the order in which they are submitted here. Note: having multiple entries from one participant will be spread.

Note that only the ship and/or class name will be shown, not who submitted it.

Additional Rules
All decisions are final, any prizes are non-negotiable and the competition organizers reserve the right to remove competition entries or request that they are resubmitted or altered. We will hopefully never need this stuff, but just in case...

That is it. Feel free to email me with any questions that you may have. Now, what are you doing still reading this? Get painting!

Have fun!

Can we by chance actually enforce the "one picture" rule? I notice a lot of people bent the rules when they photoshopped a large number of angles into one file. I think that provides an unfair advantage when compared to those who played fairly.

Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: Vaaish on April 21, 2011, 07:44:06 PM
I've never seen a strict one image = one angle only interpretation on that. A single image shouldn't be limited to one angle on the ship unless you feel that best displays the painting. Multiple angles allows people to see the entire ship which provides a more holistic view of the paint job.

The 2008 Gothicomp rules even state multiple angles in a single shot are legal:
"If you wish, you may submit a single picture which consists of your ship from a number of different angles, in effect a composite picture. However, the normal rules apply to this in terms of size and dimension."

Post by: horizon on April 21, 2011, 07:55:26 PM
I can see Zhukov's point in a way, however looking at the past we have seen winners that where only one angle shots. So I think that most voters look through 'gimmicks'.
As another example: photoshopped images, eg a vessel on a cool space background does not make for winners or more votes.

I have a custom hive ship and a tyranid cruiser I can donate. I don't have room for a new fleet at the time.

Its customized from the Armorcast kracken, and the cruiser is just a normal tyranid razorfiend

Don't look now.. but the winners of the fleet, ship, and conversion last year... all had multiple pictures in one file. If that's not significant proof that is an advantage.. I don't know what is. Maybe they don't sweep every year, but last year it certainly played a factor. And I think people have noticed that and will start to use it as often as possible. I don't have photoshop and it makes me want to not even bother entering.

Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: horizon on April 24, 2011, 06:17:46 AM
hmm, that's a pity. Thing is you are at this time the first and only person to raise a complain about it. If more people raise concerns about this I will really consider this. But you have to understand I cannot change things because of one person.

With the restriction to 800x600 the collages will be more restriced anyway already.

And I don't think it would've made a difference to be honest.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: Vaaish on April 24, 2011, 06:43:52 AM
I really don't see that as a significant contribution to their winning. All of the winners were well painted even from a single angle. Does it provide some help, possibly, but by the same token so does ones skill in taking the photos to begin with.

I would honestly have more cause for concern that photo retouching in the hands of an expert photographer would have far more implications for unfair representation than simply adding a couple of images together. (In fact, I limit my own adjustments to color balancing, exposure tweaking, and slight sharpening when I submit my images for the competition.)

Despite that, I think you should also remember that Canucks Fan has won the ship competition for the last two years (nearly won it three years ago too) and the 2008 winners entry was a single angle of the ship that didn't even show the entire thing.

Doing a cursory glance at the heat winners too, it seems that there is a fair distribution between composite photos and single angles winning as well.

If you are concerned that photoshop provides an unfair advantage, you could always look into using the Gimp. It has a very similar feature set to photoshop and is open source so you can grab it for free.

Hi all,

I for one would really like to see more categories. There should at least be an open category where everything that doesn't fit into the fleet and single/squadron categories (think space stations, planetary defences, terrain, etc.).

What would also be cool is an artwork category, but I think that has been tried before...

Just my two cents worth :)

Hi Schwager,

thing is, each category needs a prize. At the moment I have two prizes (from Rev and Zelnik), I still need a third one to round it.

Or I'll open a category and the prize is eternal internet honour?

I finally did some painting and small conversations on some Dark Angels ships, yay.

I hope i can finish them.

@horizon

How strict are the fleet rules to have a regular list?
Im not sure if i can manage to paint enough strike cruisers and escorts to be able to put a battle barge into the list under official rules. Still i would like to enter to gothi comp and would like to have the bb inculed in the pictures.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: horizon on July 04, 2011, 03:56:24 AM
It is one Barge per 1000pts. So a Barge is always allowed.... quick way to 500pts I'd say. ;)

Oh i thought its first Barge at 1000 fleet worth.

Everything is fine then, thx for the info :-D

I might get finished, 3 Strike Cruisers, one Venerable and maybe some Escorts.

Whoo-hoo!  After a long hiatus, finally got back to painting.  Just finished my model, if not for gothicomp, I doubt I'd have the patience to actually finish it!  Thanks again horizon (and others) for organizing this.

Just a quick question, do we still send in the entries to the same email it says in the rules?  Perhaps a stupid question, but with all the boards moving etc... I thought I'd ask.

Hey i thought maybe you could introduce a system where some of the 2nd placed after the first round could get into the next round. As far as i remember only the 1st were able to advance so far. Sometimes two really great ships are in the same set.

So lets say with 30 ships we have 6sets x 5ships. So after the first round we have 6 winners for the semi finals. Now we could add a losers bracket voting for the 6 2nd placed. Two out of those get into the semi finaly as well. Then we would have 8 in the semis with 4 in each set. 1st and 2nd of those get into the final so we have 4 ships in the finals.

(Oops we already know there are 43 ships, but i guess the system works for those numbers as well)
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: horizon on August 03, 2011, 12:18:41 PM
Hey,

In... 2008 we had a semi final (73 entries)...
In the final we had less voters then in the heats...

Also,
the ship category could be big enough to do it (I made 8 heats) but the fleet category is too small. So when the fleets are in the final the ships are in the semi.....

or....

Heats Ships : voting time 10 days
Semis Ships : voting time 10 days

Heats fleets : voting time 20 days

Both Finals: voting time : 15 days

?

That'll work or is 10 days too short?
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: Caine-HoA on August 03, 2011, 12:25:27 PM
Oh ok id didnt remember that there werent even semi finals ;-) We dont need them.

My main point was not to get semi finals but to give the best 2nd placed ships a chance to get into the final. (maybe you could avoid a 2nd voting round for the best 2nd placed by simply taking the 1-3 2nd placed with the most votes into the finals).
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: horizon on August 03, 2011, 12:35:49 PM
Ya well,

8 heats means that'll we have 8 entries in the final. Enough for me. Perhaps I could fill it up to 10?

I could do so with the fleets though.

Post by: Caine-HoA on August 03, 2011, 12:39:00 PM
Yes 10 seems a bit much at the first glance.

But i think you could do it. After all the voters have a hard decition anyway, so 8 or 10 isnt that much of a difference. I think it yould be fair if the two best 2nd placed come into the final as well.

Caine:  Looking forward to your entries, your tau fleet last year was beautiful!
The problem with having "wild card" berths into the final is that the ship with the fewer amount of votes should lose again.  Nothing has changed with the entries, so it would be odd for the 2nd place ship to overtake the 1st place ship in the final.  On the other hand, I agree that 8 choices vs. 10 is not a big difference.  What about having the judges pick one more entry into the final out of all the runners up in the first round?  This would allow a runner up to enter the final if they were unlucky to be in a "group of death" heat.
Personally, I'm happy with the rules as they are.  I'm most against anything that would require extra rounds of voting, or anything that prolongs the competition.

I don't think that the results should be visible to the public untill the voting has ended. This usually leads to a certain bias. I think it's best to leave the viewers with just the information they need i.e. just the pictures.

p.s. this seams to be a very good year - there a many great entries, and some are just stunning IMHO, and I'm very happy I did enter this year.

Welcome Zorg, you still have to vote in 6 heats.
Welcome Yegr, you still have to vote in 1 heat.

(the almighty mod)
lol
;)

Fracas,

I am still thinking on it. As best numbers of 2 in ship section is not a realistic approach to me.

Perhaps I do a tiebreaker with all second bests, winner(s) of tiebreaker go to final.
Tiebreaker will last for 3 days to speed it up.

We have 30+ votes in 3 days now so this should be possible I think.

Horizon,
I really like that tiebreaker idea!  3days won't really slow anything down, so I'm happy.  This is a great way of giving a second chance  at a strong entry.  I hate to say it, but its better than my idea.

Welcome Yegr, you still have to vote in 1 heat.

If you don't think it good enough why should anyone else?
I'm not the kind of person that would vote for himself, and frankly I don't find anything better then my own entry in the respective heat ;) . So I'll just refrain from voting in that heat.

go ahead and vote for yourself

Heat one has 40 votes.
Heat four has 34 votes.

Heats one-three have most votes.
Others at 35-36.
Weird.

But, hey, it is a succes! More votes then last year! Good job everyone!

Catching up after a haitus.  Those prizes look pretty spiffy, well done.  The voss prows are gorgeous alone.

Quick question, how exactly do the heat letters and numbers work? Just so I can vote responsibly.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules
Post by: horizon on August 11, 2011, 07:52:42 PM
?
For ships heat 1 to 8.
Ships in heat 1 are named 1a, 1b, 1c, etc

Fleet heats are from a to d
Fleet entries in heat a are named aa, ab, ac, etc

the numbers correspond with the same number in the gallery.

Yeah, the votes range from 47 to 53. So indeed not everyone voted in every heat.

I would love to find out why! The fleets have lesser votes generally then the ships, who also vary per heat.

I know Yegr did not vote in one heat cause it had his ship in it (he mentions this in this thread).

So yeah odd.

I'd also like to point out that people should vote for painting and not for conversions.

Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules

I state that all and every year.

The clue that the conversion prize is awarded by judges, painting prize by votes.

I mention it every now and then.

The bottom of page 4 of this thread, very first post of mentioning heats are online. It is in the post at every other forum making people aware of it.

So, yeah, I do mention to people they should vote on painting, not conversion. :)

Well I think that I went for painting over conversions anyway in my voting. I only read the first post of the rules because I thought that would be the complete rule set. I'll remember for next year anyway.

Uploading extra pictures:
That could be a consideration for next year. This year, I dunno, I would need get back to every participant and give them the option to do so. Kinda late I think.

However, I do know some entries with additional pictures can be found elsewhere on the net (blogs/forums).

In one hand it would be nice to have some other pictures because it's difficult to show a 3D model with only one point of view ( even with a montage ). But too late for this year, changing rules or possibilities after submission's dead line is unfair for competitors and persons who already voted.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2011 - Rules

Speaking of 3D... Once came across a site which allowed you to add multiple photos together, this could alow a new spectrum to looking at submitions. It's easy to link to and integrate on other sites.
Site:
http://photosynth.net (http://photosynth.net)

You basically take pictures from as much angels as you can imagine and the program will try to match them together. So taking pictures allway round with an interval of 10° would give a perfect view. The bigger the intervall the harder it gets for the program to find common reference points. Up and down work to, just take a look at the example and drag it around (when clicking on the arrows).
An example how complicated you could make it:
http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=e9f15a54-d53f-403c-bc93-7ea58be43f90 (http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=e9f15a54-d53f-403c-bc93-7ea58be43f90)

The program isn't perfect but I'm just trowing in ideas.

Okay then another thing settled. :)

Pisces, that idea is quite new to the concept and I don't know how the gallery/site would hold up. And it is hard enough for a lot of people to get time to get one proper picture. So at this moment I am not set on this as a submission request. It would be cool to such pictures in threads though.

You will see the results in the heats/polls themselves at that point.

I wil start the tiebreaker round for the second places monday morning (6am), this will run for 3 days to keep the speed up.

As for conversions two judges gave their nominees, waiting on third one. Then some little discussion I think and then we will announce the winner after the final has run. :)

I'll stay out of the Blackstone Fortress vs. Despoiler debate, but that was certainly a Group of Death.

It's about what I pegged for heat 7. The blackstone doesn't have the contrast that the despoiler image has nor the base art. Both of those pull the blackstone down a couple of notches.

Either way, way to go everyone who entered!!! Definately one of the best Gothicomps we've ever had to vote for! Nearly everything was top notch quality and nobody should be down on themselves for not advancing!

Shorten it.  Longer voting does not generate more interest imo.  I think that 10 days is plenty, in this day and age, you can access the internet anywhere, so even if you're on holiday, you should still be able to vote.  In fact, I think having a shorter time to vote may actually INCREASE voting:  Whenever there is a buzz with a new contest, semifinal, final etc..., you want to take advantage of that buzz.  Non-Gothicomp regulators (participants or voters) may move on without voting if it takes too long.
Just my 2 cents anyways.
Thanks,
CF
