Title: [WM] Für Sigmar!
Post by: Cobalt on May 18, 2011, 07:01:27 AM
I started an Empire Army more than one year ago. I decided it ws high time I did some progress, so I'll be posting regularly, just to keep the momentum...

Here is the lead mountain awaiting the brush...

The first units...

I'll be posting here as I progress, but a detailed "making off" will be created here:

Whilst I was oogling your pics, Lex  swooped in and beat me to the commentary.  So I won't repeat his apt comments, but will instead say that your banners are really impressive in any scale.  Great job and keep the brush stippling...

Excellent! Please keep the pictures coming.

You're making my brush finger start itching to go back to my abortive start on my Empire mountain of lead (15 units painted before I sickened myself off last year).

Stunning.
Lovely work here.
I love your work on the banners as well :)

Painting 10mm empire will either lead to great things or madness ;)

Dude superb colors! I love that you are actually doing theme units from the various regions of the empire. Also, your banners are so good as to be jawdropping!  :o Those banners look like they were done free hand and if so that is stunning work friend.

Thanks for the nice words guys. This is what is needed to get motivation.

Yes, the beards and the banners (especially the reverse side!!!) are sources of endless joy   :-\

I'll post again once I finish the next two units (cross bows and one more hallebardiers)

Wow, summer got in the way, and everything has been on hold for several weeks. But thank Sigmar, I'm back in business.
The crossbows are over, and one of the hallebardiers is almost done. I finished half (sigh  :'() of the banner, and couldn't resist showing you the lady the soldiers of Talabheim refer to as Hässliche Betty....

The terrible thing with Warmaster Empire is not that the banners are calling for a nice design. What really gets you is that once you've done a freehand on one side, you know you have the other waiting for you!

So here is Hässliche Betty, again! Up to you if you'd rather see this maiden's front or * ahem* rear view. ???

I think the front of the banner is an improvement, just to be picky. It's all very good though.

You're starting to encourage me to paint my Empire army- I had planned on painting them simply, but you're setting a good challenge.

Another great looking unit and banner.

Are you going to make any more Talabheim or Talabecland themed knightly regiments? I'm looking for information on these guys myself. It seems they have Knights Panther, Knights of the White Wolf and Knights of the Blazing Sun, as well as the Order of the Black Rose and Templars of Taal. Information is pretty scarce on the last two.
Title: Re: [WM] Fr Sigmar!
Post by: Cobalt on November 23, 2011, 04:10:39 AM
Yep, next one on the bench is the black rose. I will skip the Taal templars though, these are relics in my version of the Empire. (Although I can see a conversion using the horns of the stags sold by Eureka for their wood elf 10 mm range).

You can get a couple of drawings of the black rose in the book on heralrdy of the Empire, and also, well hidden, in the Warhammer Role Playing Game 4th edition -  But both images differs: they are entirely black, horse barding, armor and lance, with white horses and red plumes in the RPG; Black barding, red lance, steel armor in the Heraldry one. Still undecided. The banner is lovely but will be difficult.

The panthers will follow, but I think I may not use the standard blue theme. Panthers are black and yellow after all. The challenge will be to differentiate them from the blazing sun...

Post by: Geep on November 24, 2011, 03:05:26 AM
I've only seen pictures of the Order of the Black Rose from 'The Empire at War', and the 'Uniforms and Heraldry of the Empire' has Knights of the Black Rose. Althpugh the names are very similar, they are two very different knightly groups going by the background. The Order of the Black Rose (black armour, red gauntlets) are honourable guardians of the count of Talabheim (previous bodyguard of the Empress).
Knights of the Black Rose (silver armour, red lances) are sell-swords and known for treachery, willing to switch sides during campaigns for the right price. The 'Uniforms and Heraldry of the Empire' doesn't really go into this, but it's repeated pretty often in other sources (a good summary of which is here: http://warhammer-empire.com/library/knightly-orders/ (http://warhammer-empire.com/library/knightly-orders/)).

I don't have any of the Warhammer roleplaying books, but I'd really like to know if they add any more details to the two knightly orders above (with their names being so similar I really don't know if they're the one group or not).

I like the stag horn idea for the Templars of Taal- I plan to make a unit of these guys in the far distant future and may steal the idea.

:o Thanks for the clarification. I was not aware of the subtilities...Looks like somebody in the GW fluff department got his brushes mixed up to me... ::)

However, the two images I was referring to have the same banner, so I guess it is the same unit.
As for the background in the Roleplay edition, there are a few elements (one column per order) on the knightly orders, including the griffons, panthers, reiksguard, white wolf, the usual suspects. Nothing on the black rose (order or knights)...
Title: Re: [WM] Fr Sigmar!
Post by: Geep on November 25, 2011, 08:50:16 AM
It probably is just a mistake that there's a difference between Knights of the Black Rose and the Order of the Black Rose, but at least there's some difference in name. Poor old Knights of the Broken Sword have two very different backgrounds and lots of details...

Looking forward to see how you paint them (and probably stealing more ideas  :P)

Great Job! I like how you transfered the classic Reiksguard scheme on the 10mms. Fits them really well.  Plus the banners are awesome. Only con is your painting speed because I can't wait to see more.  :)

Thank you gentlmen, praise much appreciated. :)

I'll finish a batch of hallebardiers (probably from Boven?) before I turn to the Knights of the Black Rose. I have found a tutorial to sculpt heraldic roses, but the shields are so small, that I am afraid of going there... We'll see.

Cheers

Respected Sirs,

I could not resist and left the Hallebardiers for later, as I wanted to have the Knights of the Black Rose done...

Here is the unit almost completed. I am working on the banner now. I'm pretty happy about the way the heraldic rose is rendered. But I must admit I feel a bit underwhelmed by the general feel of the banner, especially compared to the Reiksguard's one.

Do you have comments or suggestions on how to improve it? A parchment is a sure value, but it would hide the rose stem and thorns, a pity... I need ideas. ???

The painting of the banner is great, but I agree that something is lacking compared to the very striking Reiksguard banner. Is it perhaps because of the size you've got the picture (i.e. does it look better in real life from 30cms?).

If you do add something then perhaps you might try a vertical scroll on the left to avoid covering the rose? Or maybe some smaller heraldic devices running down the right-hand side (shields?).

Having said all of this, I'm very impressed.

Title: Re: [WM] Fr Sigmar!
Post by: Geep on January 02, 2012, 11:40:27 AM
You could play up the association of the Order of the Black Rose with the god Mor, putting skulls or similar icons in the corners?

I also like the above idea of honour scrolls/ lists
Title: Re: [WM] Fr Sigmar!
Post by: David Wasilewski on January 02, 2012, 03:39:36 PM
Very impressive.

I'd add black skulls in opposite corners and a scroll with battle honours in the other corner.

Thanks for the suggestions. In the french forum, Vincent suggested among other things brambles all over, in addition to muting down the large flat red zones. But I'll admit it takes guts... :) A scroll as in the Haschlisse Betty banner could fit on the left... For now, I started simply adding some highlight, to draw the attention to the rose. It is already better even if my better half failed to recognize the vast improvement :)

Every single men of your army is just great! For the banner I don't know if adding some parchments or skulls would help with the overall look. For 10mm geometric patterns and contrasting colours should work better in my opinion (like your outstanding reiksguard banner). So maybe your white highlights already solved the problem. Another idea would be a white line between the red and black/grey like you did on the cross of the reiksguard banner. That worked great on that banner and would give some more contrast.

Deeply impressive.  The standards in particular make one almost weep with envy at both the underlying skill and the obvious investment of time and effort.
Title: Re: [WM] Für Sigmar!
Post by: Cobalt on April 06, 2013, 09:59:49 PM
Wow, thanks! Not sure about the skill, but the right tools and 4.0 correction on both eyes certainly help :)

@Toon : Black undercoat, then heavy brushing of gunmetal all over the figures, then the cloths with Scab Red or Chaos Black, then one highlight with Red Gore or Charadon granite, then HEAVY wash with Devlan Mud. At this stage, the black is normally finished. I continue only on the reds, with again red gore, then Blood red and a final touch (very light, maybe only a point) of blazing orange on the top most points (typically the elbow/knee).

As for the armor, between the drybrush and the devlan wash, they look nice, I only do a finaly highlight with mithril silver (on the edge of the weapons for example).

Hope it helps. BTW, I tried the new wash that replaces devlan mud (agraxsomething I think), it works equally well.

And yes, I'm sloooooooooooow... but see for example the last banner (the halberds), both sides, only took me one sitting (maybe what, 40 minuntes? I can never stay much longer than that). Deciding what pattern/design is another matter (in this particular case, almost 6 months!)

While Holt continues mustering troops, on the opposite bank of the Talabec, the Elector Count Helmut Feuerbach has also raised his banner, and is calling upon his barons to prepare for the incoming invasion...

These are the different steps to paint the banner. The black outlining really helps to define the symbol...

Hi there,

slow progress is better than no progress I guess. I hope to finish the General of the Empire sooner rather than later. For now, the base looks crowded and is difficult to read, I believe flocking and basing will change that. And while the Banner and the Trabanti (Bodyguards) are done, I'm still struggling with the Elector Count himself...

And yes, these guys are black and yellow, while the banner is that of Feuerbach from Talabecland (red and yellow) and the army is black and red - Carroburg? Nuln...? Well, I'm planning a second contingent of Empire, from Averland, and this will be the starting point - and yes, I'll get to to the black and red general later on...

Von Holz couldn't see the Elector count Feuerbach get ready for the campaign and stay behind. He has ordered the seamstresses of Wolfenbourg to get his banner ready on the double. Well not his banner technically. He's planning to raise the Ostland Provincial Banner. One cannot be too cautious these days...

And with the right incentives, it is amazing what the steamstresses of Wolfenbourg can achieve...

Thanks guys, but hold on to theses brushes. It requires more perspiration than inspiration, I tell you.

And one step closer! I think the banner is done - I don't have the guts to ruin everything with a roll of parchments that would hide the nice laughing cow...On to the general and his retinue!

This is epic stuff i think. They are very common and sold with bases. But i's 6 mm scale. So i suppose if you set a large sized wall like this, it will appear strangely.

And here they are, side by side, ready to lead their armies to hell and back. Well, Feuerbach clearly seems eager to  run down the ennemy. Holt on the other hand, ponders endlessly the political consequences of each of his moves... Give me a lucky General any day, said the Emperor. But would you rather be led by a rash and impertuous count or by a scheming and secretive baron? Anyhow, if you serve under the banners of the empire, you don't get much choice on the matter...

Good eyesight! It's indeed a mix. Skirmishers, arquebusiers and crossbowmen. A loose lot, that will be perfect for skirmisher stands.
