Hi!
Here are some shots of my latest project, a tallarn imperial guard army. The two infantry companies are going to be mechanised but for now they have to walk. :)
First infantry company without finished bases and supreme commander
(http://www.diefestung.com/forum/galerie/bilder/bild-5334.jpg)
Second infantry company with command but without comissar
(http://www.diefestung.com/forum/galerie/bilder/bild-5333.jpg)
Finished leman russ company
(http://www.diefestung.com/forum/galerie/bilder/bild-5332.jpg)
Finished Baneblade
(http://www.diefestung.com/forum/galerie/bilder/bild-5331.jpg)
Comming up next, ForgeWorld Valkyre(s)...
Comments und critics are always welcome!
-
Very nice and detail paintjob,
I like to see infantry units. I have the sensation that when playing epic there are always lots of mechanized-armour-vehicles and too few infantry. (As far as I know because I dont play epic).
-
Excellent paintjobs, Guthwine. That's some killer detial on all the infantry and vehicles.
They would make any battle better-looking, but the only thing I would do differently is give 'em a black wash to make the detail really pop. Don't take that as criticism, though.
-
Thanks guys!
@Piett: No problem, as I said criticism is welcome! The thing with the black wash is, that it darkens the colors too much, so thats why I brown washed all of them.
-
Lovely looking army, I especially like the Baneblade.
-
Great looking army.
-
Good army. I like the baneblade! Send it to my house jajajaja! Bye.
-
Hey Guthwine!
Sauber sauber! Die sehen echt verdammt gut aus! V.a. die Soldaten und die Akzente an den Manteln - top! :)
krieg grad wieder Lust selber was in Richtung Epic zu machen.
lg,
-
Nice lookin' force! Good call with the brown wash, it's way more subtle.
-
Thanks! The new GW washes are really a great help especially with smaller scales. All these models have one layer and a wash and that really saves alot of time. For all Warmaster or Epic painters I can recommend these washes. :)
Here is "Julia" my first valkyre, 3 more to go. I tried a pinup nose art but I am not sure yet if I really like it. Also what would you say, should I add the white dots like on the baneblade or does the camo suffice?
Three more to go... :)
-
Nice.
-
great Work !! awesome details!
cheers bans
-
Nice nose art! I say keep it, even it it's microscopic... YOU know its there ;)
I think the camo pattern w/o the white dots suffices.
-
You could! I don't think it would look bad with white dots, however, I like 'er just as she is!
-
Impresive work :o
-
A quick little update, two more finished Valkyres. They are all pretty much all painted in the same manner so the noseart is the only highlight of these models.
He will put a boot up your ***. :D
(http://www.diefestung.com/forum/galerie/bilder/bild-5443.jpg)
As they look like Hinds, I thought why not give him the classic look. :)
Comments und critics as always welcome! One more to go, they are nice models, but I dont want to paint them anymore. :D
-
Freakin' awesome 8)
Hope they give plenty of enemies "the boot"!
-
Time for an update. Finally the Valkyres are finished! *wohooo* :) I also finished the missing commissar and command hq squad and tried one of the ogryn stands allthough they are not in the basic 3000 point list.
But enough said, here they are:
When my brother asked me if the noseart was a transfer sheet, I knew I got the job done. :)

Comments and critics are welcome as always.
-
Consistently awesome 8)
I especially like the bee. Any tips for those of us who might like to plagarize that idea? I just built my own valkarie unit... Were those chin-mounted cannon originally part of the model or did you modify them a bit? Mine lack the cannon.
Your squadron leader seems to by flying the "happy shark" ;)
-
Thank you! The guns are part of the model (from Forgeworld), but the one of the "happy shark" didnt survive shipping.
The only tip I have for the noseart is to paint the freehand directly after priming and when you do the camo leave a small black line around it. Youll give it alot more definition and thats what I did wrong with the pinup. Also a small brush doesnt hurt but other than that its try&error. :)
-
Very nice work!
-
The paint is awesome!!!
and the figures are really nice
Keep showing us your advance
-
Thanks guys!
The story continues with the whole might of the imperial Navy, 2 thunderbolts finished. :) They actually looked easier to paint than they were, with alot of corners and edges, it also showed me that "desert yellow" is not a good paint to cover larger areas, so thats why the paintjob might look a bit sloppy. But from gaming distance it looks good enough.
As they are part of the navy they got a squadron marking (red/white) and because they basicaly look the same they got individual kill markings to bring a little history into the paintjob. Nr.2´s kill was supposed to be a tank but I think it looks more like an AA gun.

Comments & criticism are very welcome!
Comming up a Flak Battery (3 Hydras)...
-
So time to continue the story. :)
Finished the Hydras and my first squad of sentinels:
Comments as always welcome. Comming up... 3 Hellhounds!
-
Very Good!!! I like your job, congratulations.
-
Thanks Ale!
Finally my Valkyres have something to transport. I wanted the stormtroopers to stand out compared to the standard guards, so they got camoflague and a more stealthy look for the desert:
Its really hard to photograph those minis properly, I tried my best to show you the most important details!
-
A quick update: Finished the missing hellhound and completed the squad, enjoy:
The one (bottom left) even comes with directions for the enemy. The plan was to write "salvation" on it but then I went with "hell" as it is much shorter and easier to do. :D
-
super-nice (running out of superlatives, if you can't tell)
The dozer-blade decorations are very appropriate. The black and yellow is very cool.
-
Amazing detail on the vehicles. I love the tiny little aquilla, and the nose art on the Valkyres is nothing short of inspiring!
-
Thanks guys!
Finally, my supreme commander got his ride. :) In reality it would be stupid to mark a commander like that, but for the game I think its appropriate. Also I placed them on different terrain on the base to bring some movement into them.
Comments and critics always welcome.
-
Nice paintjob and the details are ace :D
-
Got a bit bored by the tanks and started some of the many other projects on my table. :)
Here is the start of my WM high elf army. I went for a different look than usual because I wanted them to stand out. Alot of effort went into this unit and if I continue like that I will be able to field them in about 1-2 years. :D Please let me know what you think of the colors!
The aim was to paint as clean as possible and while there are some details that could be better, I am pretty happy about the result (especially about some - notall- of the gems.)
As it stands now I would say its my best work but as I said also one of most time consuming units. Also because I am used to bretonnian knights which dont have that much details.
So here it is the start of my HE army a unit of silverhelms:
I have also finished the first 2 miniatures of my ne MH Skaven warband:
The warplock pistol is a cross between a dwarven pistol, a dw handgun barrel combined and a bit from the dwarven musicians trumpet (or whatever it is)
Comments&Critics are always welcome!
...Comming up next will be the last sentinel squadron for my guard army.
-
Wow Guthwine, that looks relly impressive!
I love the colour scheme, It is notice the terrible amount of work of the paint.
As I see in epic units you like the work good done and the very neaty paints. It will be a pleasure too to see some units of your bretonian army, if it is possible!
-
Thank you, of course its no problem.

-
Thanks for the link!
:o This pics seems like a revelation. I should do a bretonian army... I do not know when, maybe in the far future... but I should do it.
I love the knights errant, and they are very powerful with the original heraldic scheme.
-
I don't think that the Knights Errant are available anymore...
Anyway, nice Brets there, very nice...
-
Thanks for the comments, its much appreciated!
No sadly the knights errant are very rare. I managed to get that unit from ebay for about 3 times the price of a normal blister but even that was a "good" bargain. The last rare unit I saw was a HE dragon prince unit going out for $125 :o
-
Hmm, I think I've got some loose Phoenix Guard laying around somewhere....£££££ ;D
-
These are absolutely stunning.
The grail knights are my favourites.
I have always fancied a bret army but know I am not committed enough to paint all the individual knight's colours :( so kudos to you.
-
Guthwine,
The detail on those Knights is truely epic and captures the feel of a Brettonnian army to a tee. Well done on the minute painting mate.
Ram.
-
Thanks for the comments!
Finally after a long break from painting I finished the next unit for the high elfs. This unit also convinced me that the green/orange color scheme works for me. :)
I loosend the formation at the sides but made the center a little more dense with the addition of a 5th strip of bowmen which made them a bit awkward to base.
The great advantage of this formation is that I can paint every unit in the same way and still be able to tell which stand belongs to which unit. The big disadvantage is that they only look good when in line formation but anyways thats the formation they are going to have most of the time.
So here they are bowman unit nr1:
A big thanks to the Warmaster painting tale, all your great works got me to pick up the brush again and continue painting.
Comments & critics as always very welcome!
-
I don't think that I've commended your painting yet have I? So, bloody nice paint jobs, especially the hereldry on your Brets, very tasty... I would however say that the Grail Knights are nice all being the same, but each would have their own individual heraldry IIRC (might have changed in more recent background I guess). So, whilst keeping the unified colour scheme, I woulf have suggested using the same red and white colour pallete, but vary the actual design between each knight. Say have one quartered, one with stripes, one with checks, one with diamonds, one half red, half white, and a combination of all of those.
Needless to say as and when I ever get around to doing a Bret army, or for that matter a 100yrs war or WotR WMA army, I'm going to have lots of fun with the knights...
As to the dark green High Elves? Very well executed, but I'm not completely sold on the scheme. Have you tried using Gold instead of silver for the scale-mail? Or perhaps lightening the green a little bit...
-
Thank you Stomm for the comment, its much appreciated!

Well the idea behind this scheme was, that after they drank from the grail, they dont only fight for their lands, family or whatever, they just fight for the Lady, so personal heraldry wouldnt be important for the grail knights.
As to the dark green High Elves? Very well executed, but I'm not completely sold on the scheme. Have you tried using Gold instead of silver for the scale-mail? Or perhaps lightening the green a little bit...
I am not a big fan of gold on armor and try to keep it to a minimum. If it werent shiny, gold would be pretty useless. :D
I mean its good to break up the armor but steel should always be the main armor color in my opinion.
Concerning the green: The main reason for this scheme is, that I didnt want to paint them in the standard blue/white and that I personally like to paint green, its just easier I guess than red or white, so the main reason is I guess laziness. :D
But there are also news from the epic front. Finally my base 3000P list is finished and ready for battle!
Here are some pics:

Overview:
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8474/final3000.jpg (http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8474/final3000.jpg)
The one thing I learned is that Forgeworld products are not really that good. I mean they surely look good if you are lucky enough to get miniatures that survived shipping.
Resin combines the drawbacks of plastic with the drawbacks of tin and on the epic scale its really a pain to work with something like that. (for example the barrels of the basiliscs, its impossible to get them straight)
But anyways I still have a FW warhound titan on my table that waits for a paintjob but for now Ill focus on Warmaster, cause I want them ready for the EuroGT. (it will be tough but I hope I can make it)
-
And the story continues with spearmen unit nr.1. The EuroGt seems like an almost impossible deadline but I hope to increase the frequency of the updates anyways.
According to the high elf army book, the sword/heart symbol is worn by units that lost their champion. As the banner pole also has that heart on top of it, i thought it would fit.

This is lovely :)
-
Very nice - it's nice to see HE in Warmaster painted in colours other than blue/white or red/white!
You have obviously spent a lot of time on each unit.
dave
-
@Vincent&Dave: Thanks for the comments, its much appreciated!
Now the story continues, with 2 units of bolt thrower. I made them both at once as there are not that much work. Its a pitty there are not more units like them. :)

Hey man an awesome blog!
I really like the paintscheme for your elves, its been said already but its nice to see a none white High Elf army. The freehand work on the banners, shields and the design on the Champion of the spearmans cloak all really help the units to stand out. It makes them look great. I think I need to do more freehand designs as it really adds to the overall look.
I hope to see more!
ps. I love your Brets
-
Thanks Angor!
Yes the freehands add alot of character to the units, but its not a fast way to paint up an army. Took me about a year to field my Brets completely painted. But seeing your great work with the skink bases, it looks like youre ready to invest some extra time in your units too. :)
But at least the reaver knights I am currently working on have no shields or barding, so I hope to finish them till next weekend.
-
After a week longer as I thought finally finished Reaver Knights unit no.1 and thus my first entry for the WM painting tale:
I really enjoyed these miniatures and they make my favorite unit so far. I should rewrite the list and take some more of them. :)
Comming up next is a unit of eagles and then both units of chariots.
-
Its unbelievable, I made the weekly base for the WM painting tale. :) Thanks to heavy drybrushing the eagles are finished.
I always thought there was one more upright eagle in the blister to fit them better on the base but these 3 are all the same.
Comments and critics as always welcome.
-
I had fairly good luck bending the wings on the eagles.
Also did a test-snip of the eagle rider to see how he'd look clipped off the rock and posted on a 'flight-stand.' Not too bad, even with no further sculpting.
-

Well, that idea didnt even cross my mind. :)

Yeah I also thought of that but then was to scared to clip off too much, so I sticked with the standart pose.

Ebay was yielding a bumper-crop of Giant Eagle riders for a while, so one of them ended up on the chopping block -- I can try to post pics so his sacrifice is not in vain. How well the 'surgery' worked depends on whether you're actually looking at the model from below or not.
;-).
To do a good job, you'd probably cut the legs off at the body and resculpt the legs/feather pattern -- eagles have fairly nice 'retractable landing gear.'
-
Here is a little update on the epic front. I am going to play some minigeddon, so I needed some more of the cheaper units.
And now lets get back to the warmaster painting tale. :)
Edit:
Just added this weeks entry for the painting tale:

-
Its going well with the HE spearmen (will finish them by the weekend/some time next week) so I had a little extra time to continue with epic. :)
Here comes the commisars baneblade. It got a little darker than the first one, but its fun to paint and for only 2 hours (i love epic stuff :D ) I am quite happy with it.
Sorry for the picture quality but I am suffering from a loss of photoshop that makes resizing the images with Paint a great pain.
-
Sweet ;D
-
I have good news and bad news, the good news is I have been painting, but the bad news is, that its nothing WM related. :) I went to my first BB tournament last month and got really into BB, so I spent the last month collecting and painting up some models. And right now I picked up Epic again started to continue with the IG. I just cant seem to focus at WM at the moment so I think Ill have to drop out of the tale.
But here are my excuses why I didnt post anything the last few weeks:
The first players for the "Ostland Bears":
The first players for the "Sotek Serpents":
And the last baneblade, which completes the super heavy tank company:
Instead of going for a second epic army, I decided to add more stuff to my guard army to play all kinds of combinations.
So whats left to paint is:
-1(-2) FW Warhound Titans
-4 FW Vultures
-3 FW Shadowswords
-12 Rough Rider (old IG Biker)
-3 Manticores
-6 additional Basilisks
Thats what I have lying around here atm, later some more Hydras, Infantry, Demolishers, Bombards and Griffons might be added. But thats far away right now. :) So Ill hope to update with new Epic stuff more regularly from now on.
-
ZOMFG!
Great work - never ending story ;)
-
@M.Petz: Thank you, cant wait to see some more of your skaven. (especially in a battle against my bretonnians. :) )
Those who are interested in following my epic guard army, can see the progress made since my last post here:
http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=18478&start=15
But being fed up with the boring browns for epic and after playing some Warmaster again the urge to paint 10mm returned. :D But the first work is a hired sword I need for our MH campaign and its the trusted Elf ranger. My big hope of bringing the long needed victory in Mordheim.
And after sitting way to long on my workbench I put the finishing touches on that second spearmen unit, which finally is finished. Definetly the last time I use the "rising moon", except its for one banner or something. That stuff was just a pain in the...you know where.
Thankfully I got one unit of phoenix guard and one unit of swordsmen, so for the basic 2k points list, I dont need any more spearmen, though they are very nice models for a basic infantry unit.
Next unit is going to be a second unit of silver helms, where I shall try the picture story paint guide.
-
Raising moon could be a pain... but looking at the paint finish I think is really awesome... love your elf army!! so cool!
-
@JChaos: Thanks again, its much appreciated!
So after some camera problems last week (which denied me a picture story), I finally can continue the story of the highelves. Also I finally agreed with myself on a 2000P army list. :D
So here is bowman unit nr.2:
and Silverhelm unit nr.2:
And here is the first army build up. Some things will be added later but this is the first goal:
1xGeneral
1xHero on Dragon
2xMages
4xSpearmen
6xArchers
2xBolt thrower
2xReaver
2xChariots
2xSilver Helms
1xEagles
=> excatly 2000P BP10
So, still 7 units and the characters to go but finally there is almost an end in sight. :)
As always comments are very welcome.
-
So, still 7 units and the characters to go but finally there is almost an end in sight. :)
Should take you about a week then ;)
Great work.
The quality of finish is way up there and it is always nice to see a none blue and white high elf force.
-
Thanks for the comment!
Should take you about a week then ;)
Oh I wish that were true. :D Sadly I am not a bit as fast as you or others here.
-
Those silver helms are excel, and the colour scheme is great
-
I havent been updating alot on Warmaster lately because the BB League has started and I wanted to get my team ready for the games. And so the core team of 11 players is painted and ready. I hope they will perform better now that they are painted, already lost 2 matches (2-1, 3-0) and my catcher is missing the next game because of a niggling injury, so it can only get better. :D
Here they are the Ostland Bears:
Bert the Ogre is my favorite as its the first miniature of that size I have ever painted, and I never would have thought that I managed a decent a skintone, but I have to say I am quite happy with it. 10mm is great but its very nice to paint larger minis once a while.
And a tiny update on the Epic Front. I recycled the top of pen and the cap of the GW washes to make another objective. A very important missle silo. :)

Blood Bowl still is the main distraction from painting my high elfs, its just too much fun. :) So here is a little update.
4 additional Skinks are ready to play:

All my sculting skills went into this masterpiece: :D

And heres a little overview of the progress so far:

Comments and critism as always welcome!

Loving the lizards.
The colour scheme is very complimentary and eye catching.
Keep up the great work.
-
Thanks for the feedback, its much appreciated!

After some painting some units for Epic and freshly motivated from the EuroGT I continued painting the reavers. And after they sat on my table unfinished for about 6 months they are finally finished.
Which brings my missing unit count to 6 to complete the 2000 points. Thankfully the rest of the units are all infantry from now and 2 of them are swordmasters, which hopefully should be finished faster thanks to lots of armor. Though I am not quite sure if I am going to paint the swordmasters in the green/orange color. I think theyll mostly get white clothes. Anyone got an idea what the colors of hoeth are? (blue/white?)
-
The reavers are lovely
-
Well done for completing old projects :)
Wish I was as dedicated :(
-
Thanks guys!
@azrael: Its just like Tolkien once said: "It's the job that's never started takes longest to finish." :) And for me the reaver where one of those units that slowed everything down. Hopefully updates will be faster from now on.
-
Great work on the reavers (and everything else)! I'd love to face them on the battlefield even although you had a Ld 10 aswell. But we both just love the nice sculpts...
I would say the swordmasters are white/blue according to the standard gw scheme... But I couldn't find anything about the colours of hoeth.
-
Thanks, after painting the skin colors today, I think Ill just paint the Swordmasters how I ever I feel like. :) But white will probably one of the main colors.
-
The Swordmasters are still unfinished and motivation is at a low point, so I wanted results this weekend and what better to do than a character. :)
So I finished the first mage for my highelfs:
The second mage is already primed and awaits paint, maybe work on the swordsmasters will continue next week, well see. :D
-
Consider this a thumbs up!
I have discovered that I prefer painting my 10's singly, I blame the Blacksmith(Javier) for starting me down that road, but I actually get results, whereas with my 28's I was taking a week or more to finish a single model.
In any event, taking a break and doing a character is the perfect way to rachet up the old motivation as you see results quickly.
I always enjoy seeing your stuff and keep working I enjoy seeing other's interpretations on fun models, like Swordmasters.
~Cory
-
Lovely and amazing work
-
Thanks for the comments, helps alot to bring me back behind the brush. :)
@Rolgan: I think the swordmaster are quite boring to paint with that much armor and so few poses, dont expect too much surprises. :) What I really am looking forward to are the phoenix guards with their capes, though I might just end up with the standart flames on them. :D
-
About the swordmasters, never was impressed with those castings... ended up making a Swordmaster unit from multiple character packets.
-
great sorceror! white whirlwind seems great to me. I understnad you had modeled some stones being throw away for the strengh of the magic wind, isn't it? if it so... I love the idea.
Also I miss the armless marine in the second plane... did he had a name? :). Anyway, excellent work and go for those swordmasters that I am sure the will be great in your army, special units always gives personality to the armies, and your elf army seems amazing!
talking about your elf army... are you planning to use the regular elf list or the tournament trial list ?
looking forward to see more 10mm painted by you, always suprise and are all amazing!
-
Thanks alot J, its much appreciated!
lol, the marine has yet to be named, but he usually only appears in pics that go onto my CMON.com account. But since I pretty much gave that up, cause its really only a platform for golden demon winners and 28mm minis, he was left out. :)
And yes the stones are supposed to enforce the whirlwind effect, also later I found out that the HE spell is called "hail of stones" or something so its a 2 in one effect. :)
To the list, I will most likely play the tournament trial list, as it is more popular in our group. Mainly because the 3+ shooting for everything can be exploited to easily. (Not that I would do such a thing. :) )
-
Dude! I absolutely love the stones/whirlwind effect! I look forward to seeing more of your units. Thanks for sharing with us.
-
Thanks gray! Sharing is a great driving force for me, as I always feel bad if I havent updates for a while. :)
And heres mage no.2 : He is not such a show off like his douchey young colleague who rides the whirlwind. Hes a little older and experienced, he knows a helmet can be useful on a battlefield and he rides with style. :D

These are the eureka lions, they could be a little bigger but they work pretty well as they are. The armor plates and the "beard" thingies of the lions are greenstuffed. (yeah that was fun) :)
@jchaos this is for you:
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6825/jchaos.jpg
Hopefully I get on with the swordmasters, if not the hero on dragon will get some love!
-
Nice work on these.
Those lions look very much the part.
Better than these ;)

-
Love the lion chariot, great work on the greenstuffing ;D
-
:D ;D :D now the post is complete !
The eureka lions had a very good quality! I had never seen them and it seems they worth. Congrat!
-
Great white lion chariot the Eureka lions work really well.
-
I like those lions! The chariot looks great! All your painting looks great!
-
Thanks for the comments guys!
Yeah the eureka lions are well made, though the "attacking" pose looks abit awkward in a closeup. The only downside Id say is the modelcount, they are packed kind of randomly (at least mine were), so youd need 2 or 3 packs for a whole unit of lion chariots.
Also work on the swordmasters has gone well so far, I hope to finish them tomorrow!
-
Since my enemy of today SpiritusX, canceled our game (I guess it was fear :P ) , I continued with the sword masters and as promised they are finally finished. (thank god! :D )
I experimented a little bit with mixing colors into the metallics. Sadly this makes the armor unwashable (at least with badab black) so I washed it with dilluted Regal Blue with sadly doesnt make a very good contrast compared to ba black.
So without further adue here they are:
Comming up next is archer unit 3 out of 4...
-
Guthwine,
This is the second attempt to leave a reply as the first got lost in the ether as I navigated between tabs trying to get the name of some Eureka models correct.
What the heck were you talking about, those Swordsmen are ready to Ginsu (tm) their way through any and all opponents and to look stylish while doing so.
Regarding tinting metallic paints, there are really only two methods that I have found which work well:
1. Paint metals as normal, ie oily steel, chainmail and mithril highlight and then use a "magic wash" (4 to 1 Future and ink) Or simply some of the new GW washes, this takes some trial and error as the strength (depth?) of the tones of the various washes is highly variable.
2. Purchase a pearlizing medium, which is essentially a silvery metallic in a binding solution. The tone of the metallic is set by what color you add to the medium. This allows for some very interesting tints and colors but takes a little practice to get right.
Also, I just noticed your White Lion Chariots, wowsers they kick arse! You did an excellent job on the green stuffing of the lions.
A quick question for you: Do you know if the Eureka Not White Lions, ermm I mean HE Reavers with axes are in scale enough to place on the Chariots as riders?
-
They look good to me :)
-
Thanks for the comments and for the tips Rolgan. I have another unit of swordsmaster left to do, so I think Ill try out the "new" GW blue wash.
As for your question, no I have no idea if they would fit, but Id be interested to know if they do, as well. :)
-
I have the same problem painting my dragon princes. I didn't manage to get a nice coloured metallic look on them. Still trying to find a solution. But great painting as always!
edit:
I also need to try the gw blue wash. Just tried diluted regular colours.
-
Sooo sweet :)
-
Sadly no progress on the warmaster front since epic got a little in the way. :) But the good news is, my login is finally working again!
The only thing I can show are are some pics from the games day on sunday:
My Bretonnians secure the dwarf village:

But they advance steadily on the other flank

Sadly the other pics were bad so nothing more to show from the game but the dwarves also were routed, with me being one base of knights from breaking.
But there are some impressions from the other tables left to show:

Was a fun day with relaxed gaming and alot of beautiful armies. (and in retrospect too few pictures were taken)
-
Brilliant photos!! :D I like every army in those pics.
Looked like a great day, congratulations on your victorious games.
Those cardboard dwarf buildings you were defending in the first pic... do you know where they are from? or were they homemade?
I'm always looking out for 10mm terrain, it's difficult to find
-
Very nice photos- thanks for sharing
I think those Dwarf buildings are from Warhammer- The Grudge of Drong campaign box, from many years ago now (or it may have been one of the other campaign boxes). If that is them, they fit surprisingly well into 10mm games.
-
There is a CD with lots and lots of paper buildings that maybe have been used to scale down to proper size............
-
That sounds like a cool CD. Is there a .iso of it somewhere?
-

Oh yeah i remember the grudge of drong. They came out just before i stopped playing warhammer. Seem to remember an orc one as well (idol of gork?)
Infact, i just did a quick search, and you're spot on Geep. Good call
Here's the grudge of drong houses. They must have been reduced, otherwise even a dwarf would have to bend down to fit through the doors
(http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/pic641612_md.jpg)
-
Thanks for the comments.
Yes the buildings are from this cd and they are scaled down. Ill see if I can find the pdf somewhere.
-
@all
When you look at the 1st pic in the "3000 pts Chaos vs Lizzardmen" area you can see the most feared "Warmaster dice rolling hand" or simply called the "Daemon Dice" of Austria ;D
@Guthwine
Sorry ...could not resist.
Claus
-
Yay, I concur. Nice looking buildings, and please give us the references of this CD, if not the .iso or padf :P
please?
-
At a wargames show recently I tried to persuade the Timecast owners to do a 10mm fantasy range but no dice I'm afraid, they were quite snooty about doing fantasy buildings "That's not what we're about."
It would be awesome if someone would make these in resin!
Dave
-
All I did was to scan each of the building sections from those campaign packs, saved it as a file and then reduced it to about 32% when putting it into a word doc. Just needed to arrange the reduced files so I utilised the page as best I could and there you have it... lots of little WH buildings for Warmaster. Have also done a lot of the same for another bunch of card buildings that I purchased online - reduced the size and saved as a word doc file after taking them from the pdf and then printed.
-
This thread.... its alive! :D Finally after over 6 month of painting pause, your great armies and progress shots brought me back to the painting table! And the recent result can be seen now, so thanks to all of you for sharing!
Finished bowmen unit no.3 (which sat on my table since June) and now its only 4 more units and 2 characters to go, if my count is right. :) I am trying to get them done in the next 3-4 months so I can finally start repainting some of those ugly ebay dwarves.
Comming up next, the hero on dragon!
-
High quality paint, as you get use to do. I like the banner commander in the central stand.
I have no idea of what colour will you choose for your dragon. I guess you are not going to blue. So looking forward to see it!!
-
Nice bowmen, Guthwine. I don't recognize the banner-bearer; where is he from?
-
Thanks guys!
@J:The dragon will most likely be red. I thought of doing a green one but in the end theres too much green already in the army. :)
But Ill definitely paint a second one to have a dragonrider as well and I was thinking of a white one as second. (but thats future talk)
@Capt.: He must be from the HE character blister, at least I guess so. Bought some loose HE stuff from ebay once, where he was a part of. I hope I have another one for unit 4 though.
-
Good idea with the standard bearer. That's something to copy. And I'm looking forward to seeing the red dragon. I like how you pick colours.
-
Ya, the Standard guy's from the character pack. On the same sprue as the guy holding a scroll and pointing, and the guy holding/reading a scroll.
-
Lovely painting and conversion work!!!
Well done
Dave

Dave
I will never cease to be amazed how sniffy and cliquey fellow hobbyists and geeks can be to one another! x-D
Do you use Timecast models at all, yourself? Some of the 6mm napoleonic farm houses don't look too out of place for Empire villages, perhaps?
-
Thanks guys!
After a little longer than anticipated (so as usual I guess :) ) heres the finished hero on dragon. I still have yet to find out what his spear is for but I guess it impresses the Ladies. :D
Repositioned the wings to make him a little more dynamic, the only thing left to find is way to transport that thing.
Also I couldnt resist the Steam-Sale this weekend and bought Space Marine the game so motivation for Epic is also on the rise again. But I think to make this work Ill need a lighter blue than this one, as its looks way to dark from a distance.
Next up is the first unit of Phoenix Guard.....
-
Dragon = sweet!!
-
Are those standard epic figs?
-
wow great dragon! I like the raider.
-
Thanks for the kind words, guys!
@amnar: Not exactly, I got them from someone on the taccom forum.
Phoenix guard have been cleaned and primed and are waiting for some color!
-
Thanks to one of our local gamers who invited me to a dreadfleet game the other day, I wanted a naval game set in a fantasy world. And boom Uncharted Seas hit me and I started with ordering 2 Starterfleets + Flagships.
I got the package on Thursday and in an (for me) ultra speed painting weekend I finished the iron dwarves starterfleet:
Those will get water bases at some point but I am still testing how to make them look decent so for now no bases. Im working on an imperial ship to test the best way to do them properly.
Sadly I cant control such painting attacks otherwise my Highelfs would be finished right now. :) But I can say that all the freehand work on my Phoenix Guard is done and only the boring parts are still to finish. I do believe I managed a good contender for the inofficial banner contest. :) But we will see...
-
Those look really nice, I've been looking at dystopian wars lately (same system different setting) and its nice to see what can be done with these little ships.
-
Wait - how did you get the water looking like that? That's amazing!
-
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated!
@Stormwind: Its actually just a lot of drybrushing + a black wash for all the lower areas. :) (From a Regal Blue base over Ultramarines Blue to Enchanted Blue and then some EB+Bleached bone )
The first imperial frigates are now assembled and primed and a little bit of progress has been made with the phoenix guards. Looks like Im back in business. :D
-
New update incoming. :) Again something different than usual. :D Schnitzelbowl (2 day BB Tournament in Vienna) was last weekend so I had to finish another catcher and thrower to play full painted. (Didnt bring me much luck though :D )
I modified the thrower a little by adding the wings to the helmet and the gem thingy to the breastplate. (from my HE bits box)
Also I got the test waterbase done for an imperial cruiser and started working on the frigates.
Cant find the tutorial I had but I used paper towels with pva glue but the towels have these dot patterns on it. Next time Ill try it with some tissue paper for a better surface.
On an Epic related note, I got my galeforce nine order and mixed Garid/Dark and Dead winter grass to get some desert grass. The whole army got their share of dead grass, one desert army still to go. :)
In hindsight I could have just used Dead grass all along as the mix looks pretty much the same. :D
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8453/rebase.jpg)
-
Great work - what's that "imperial cruiser" there? It looks like a Warmaster, Forge World ship - or is it a historical one?
-
Uncharted seas
-
Thanks! Yes as Fracas said, those are the redesigned imperial ships that Spartan Games released last month or so. A big improvement from the blocky ships they had before, but that means also more details to paint. :( :)
-
aaand theyre done! :) This brings my missing unit count to 3. So close and yet so far away. =)
Really enjoyed the room for freehands on this one. Definitely one of my favorite rare units even if theyre just one sculpt units.
The head of the phoenix on the banner was, as the great Bob Ross would say, a happy accident. :) I really kept the orange on them to a minimum as the flames should be the main center of attention. And those flames took me forever to get them right, alot of trial and error on this one.
Swordmasters are primed and ready to be painted next.
-
Those phoenix guard are gorgeous!!!!!!
Lovely flame effect - you must have had aching eyes after doing that lot!
Fantastic!
Dave
-
Stunning flame effect - you're a braver man than I!
-
Those phenix guards are total! Love the painting colours and scheme. Good to see you painting more warmaster, seeing this unit makes me want to take the brushes again
-
Thanks for the commenty guys, much appreciated!
Good to see you painting more warmaster, seeing this unit makes me want to take the brushes again
Its always nice to motivate a fellow painter, also its good to be back. :) I really want to finish the army as fast as possible, so uncharted seas has been put on hold for the time being, maybe some Epic stuff will come in the way since theres an event in 2 weeks. But ill keep you posted!
-
Great phoenix guards and a nice addition to your army. I also like the smaller version of the big banner on the shield.
-
@Doc: Thanks, I was worrying no one would notice that. :)
Sadly no paintwork to show, but I have some impressions from the epic event from yesterday.

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5988/p1010196ux.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5988/p1010196ux.jpg)
As always on these events, I end up making not enough pics so sadly are all of them.
We played 3 games and I got to face 2 armies I never had the pleasure to play against. The first game was against orcs, which ended in a draw in round 3 (cause my opponent had to leave) but I had very good chances taking it in turn 4 because much of his stuff was broken and my robots just kept comming back.
Game 2 was against the legendary squats, who had a surprising amount of barrage weapons. But thanks to teleport I was able to cut the distance and take much of his smaller artillery out of action before it could reach its full potential.
What took away victory for me was my stupid objective setup, where I put one completly in the open and the second one in the ruins too far away, which allowed his superheavy tank (DC6 5VS ?? really :D ) to safely park on the open one all game. So the game ended in a draw in turn 4.
Game 3 against the tyranids was an interesting one, because that one time I faced an army that could replenish its numbers and even add more units to their formations. So obviously I was outraged and sad, that his units could come back from the dead as well. :D :)
With the help of good dice rolling and teleporting I broke and killed his strongest shooty unit and also broke and decimated another 2 infantry swarm as well. What I didnt know was the amount of units comming back and after the rallying phase those swarms were pretty much back to their original size.
From this moment on the objective was clear, kill all the synapse creatures (which allowed the swarming) But I really failed to do any damage on them, as he made all his RA saves and no swarmlord fell to shooting attacks.
His assaults were very unlucky as well, as he often missed his supporting shots and I made a scary amount of 4+ armor saves.
So in the end the tyranids were pretty much wiped out in turn 4 except for his 2 huge creatures and I won in turn 4 due to spectacular dice rolling.
So what has to be said is, that I was rolling lucky all day and pretty much all of my opponents struggled against the living metal because I kept making those saves. (I lost 3 monoliths in all 3 games combined)
But most importantly it was a fun day with lots of nicely painted armies and layed back players.
-
Oh wow, love seeing unusual armies like Necrons out and about!
-
Yeah, I think the fan lists are what epic makes so much fun as the different armies really all have a different playstyle.
Some more pics from another player:
http://tabletop.xobor.net/g2-Epic-May-Hem.html
-
Since I am really bad at sticking to the plan, I have another update to show, but (again) its not Warmaster. :) I am just easily distracted by different game systems, similar to that guy: :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSUXXzN26zg
So up first since I am the proud owner of a WHF Dwarf army and really took a liking to the system. (which only happens if you get 3000 points for a good price :) ) But looking at how long I am taking for my WM highelfs, I think Ill commission them to a painting service.
Heres a test Ironbreaker:
And the other mini is an addition to my witch hunters gang. Some time ago I bought enough stuff (now I have 18 models in total) to really try every combination for the witch hunters and since I really love the design of the old metal flagellants, I painted one up today:
He was great fun and after a long time I got to play around with colors in the wet palett, which I can just recommend using to everyone. (always!) And no matter how many warbands I look at, the Witch Hunters will always be my favorites, I just love religious fanatics (in fantasy)! :D
Good news is, I started on the banner for the next swordmaster unit, so at least I am keeping Warmaster in the back of my head. =)
-
Those are both lovely. Nice use of inks!
Dave
-
Good stuff! Yeah I am seriously considering experimenting with a home made wet palette; seems expensive to buy a proper one from the art shop.
-
Thanks guys!
@Stormwind: No need for a proper one. :) Heres mine:
Its just a flat GW blister with paper towels at the bottom and baking paper on the top. Very low tech but it works wonderful.
@David, I usually only use washes/inks on the metal parts, so yes the dwarf is heavily washed, but the flagellant, is wash-free (except the weapon).
But then again these guys, I finished today, are a product of alot of brushing and washing:
Which brings me up to 5 of 5 finished hounds, so no more of them to do! Yay, small goal achieved. :)
-
The weekend was not as productive as expected but the high commander of the high elfs is finally finished!
I built a little table for him so he can makes his plans very carefully on the battlefield and a messenger so his commands reach the troops as well. :)
I never really got the pose of that rider so it seemed quite fitting for a messenger. Sadly the base was to small in the end to add the guy thats showing off a scroll. Also a little sidenote, the symbol of the rider according to the WHF armybook is the symbol for flight/wind and even though I painted it the wrong way (mine is an older dialect :D ) it makes a fitting symbol for the rider.
Ill probably finish some more Mordheim minis next and continue with the swordmasters on the weekend. Ill have to repaint the banner though because I really want that night sky in the background as well for them.
-
Wow that base is great - I love command dioramas. I'm doing a similar one on a 25mm base as my first HE hero inspired by the flavour story in the WM manual.
How on earth did you clip off the banner bearer without damaging the horse he's attached to?
-
Those high elves look great! I love the map. That gives me an idea 8)
-
Thanks guys!
@Stormwind: I think I didnt. :) Since I bought most of the high elfs on the second hand market, I had about 3 character packs worth of commanders, so many were shredded. :D I cant even remember which rider was connected to the standard bearer. Is it the "messenger" ?
Looking forward to your diorama as well!
@Theironpainter: Youre welcome. :D
And on workdays theres only little time left to paint, which is perfect for 28mm minis so another addition to the witchhunters is finished. Flagellant no.4 is ready for the hunt!
I really love those old metal minis, its like they were made for Mordheim. (or maybe the other way around :) )
-
Those elves are astonished, I like them a lot!
great command
-
I keep looking at that command unit with the banner and the map... really excellent work, especially the banner. Good contrast with the figures themselves.
I'm happy I joined this forum, there's some talent here! I like it very much when people really put pride into their work, so often I see poorly cared-for armies or merely just torsos and legs, people not bothering to even put arms on their figures!!! Keep up the good work :) Raising the bar for everyone else out there.
-
Thanks! I have to say this forum is really inspiring and it helps pushing my limits and drives you to try something new once in a while. (often unconciously) At least I feel that way.
Allthough putting pride in your work is the archenemy of "finishing armies". :D I just looked it up, its pretty much 3 years ago since I posted the first silverhelm unit. But this year will be the year, or at least I hope so. :)
-
Yeah, ha ha, I must admit, I've been so intimidated by browsing forums that it has discouraged me. But a nice community like this is a lot more constructive than certain other ones - I won't get chewed out for missing out a mold line somewhere. =-P
It's slow but the drip drip of encouragement for a painting log is a lot better than suffering in silence. =-D
Also, what did I do to deserve -2 dice karma? o.O
-
Great painting and I like your great little details in the diarama instead of the usual command stands. Finish the swordmasters quick! ;)
-
Thanks doc!
Got some extra Zealots for my Witch Hunter warband but since I didnt want them to all look the same and also wanted them equipped with shortbows I tested my conversion skills again. With the help of my new dremel this was easier as expected. A really great tool grind down those unwanted details.
So here are the new guys:
They arent completely different than the originals but I hope that with the right paintjob that wont show that much.
Also I finally found a fitting halfling scout to accompany them on the hunt: :)

Its Van Halfling from Heresy Miniatures, a really cool mini (it actually comes with 4 right hands - one with torch/crossbow/goldpouch and the wanted sign). The only downside is that hes wearing shoes, would have looked even better barefoot imho. But still looking forward to paint him up!
And now for the great achievement this weekend. As Docdom commanded, I finished the swordmasters. :D :P
This time I did the metal differently, mainly because I didnt wash it blue at all. Just mixed up mithril silver and regal blue, then gave it a very dilluted black wash and made some highlights with brighter MS and RB mix.
Which makes them alot shinier than the first unit while still having a "blueish" tone to them. And after all highelfs have to look fabulous even on the battlefield. :D

Tried something less "in your face" with the banner. Since I really liked how the generals banner worked out, I wanted a nightsky again with the tower of hoeth in the foreground.
And then on my way grocery shopping the idea came to mind that their banner should show some kind of a star symbol, like the "warrior" or the "sword" (allthough it looks more like a cross :D ) , so the nightsky itself would be the theme and not just the background.

Looking really coool, men!
-
Oh wow, I was thinking about doing a "star" or "constellation" banner for WM elves, but now you have totally convinced me!
You use such strange colours but they work well together, great job!
-
Very nice elves!!
Byt the way, I like a lot the zealot with muppet and the halfling withchunter!! 8)
-
Great work! I like how you painted the silver. The shiny look comes out real well and the banner fits this special unit perfectly.
-
Thanks for the kind words, guys!
Last work day tomorrow for the next 2 weeks so "Project Operation High Elfs" will be finished in the next 2 weeks! I swear this time it will be done! :D
But for now I have a small update on the non SG games front. One of my reaper minis that I started working on about a year ago to test a different paint style for hair now got the finishing touches.

A great mini to paint, loads of details to play with. Now that shes painted, I think I am going to include her as a villain into the next d&d game for my group. :)
-
She is cute :)
-
High Elves continue to impress... you prime black right? Such a good job... you have a unique paint style. Isn't it funny that everybody has a slightly different take on painting?? It's a pretty cool thing if you ask me. Look at some of the top pros out there... so many different variations of style... all good.
-
Thanks for the comments guys! :D
@TiP: Yes I do prime black. Have yet to try a white primer since black always worked quite well for me. Also imho blacklining is the most important thing especially when painting small scales so it comes quite natural to me. :) But I am gonno try a white basecoat on the next reaper mini comming up, should lighten up the colors some more but no matter what basecoat you still have to do the painful shading part. :D

Is one of your zealots part of the church of Banjo the Clown? God of puppets? :P
They look great Guth.
-
Thanks Dave! :)

Thats a question for the GW designer, I never knew why or what it stands for but he comes with the puppet. :D
Small update on phoenix guard unit no.2, so far the basic flame shapes are on the coats and the banner is done. Now back to painting. :)
-
And so the days become weeks. :) And while I did not meet my deadline, I accepted the fact that I would make a terrible soothsayer. :D
BUT finally, rare unit number 4 is finished!
So here it is:

I also have decided on the future addons for the army to make a 2,5k list. In the far future 2 units of spearmen, another silver helm unit (gotta use my dragon princes :) ) and a dragon rider will join the army.
The last and final unit of bowmen for the army is primed and ready to go!
Ill leave you with a very motivational song from bits of a TV show I loved to watch as a kid (and still do):

"Everydays a good day when you paint!"

Very nice to see them painted :)
-
These are stunning - I am so impressed by your bold choice of colours.
-
I keep thinking how nice those WFB Elf blocks are before I remember they're 10mm. Superb work.
-
Thanks for the kind words guys! :)
Although I do think that you have to be bolder to paint the flames on white cloaks, just because of the lack of contrast. So in this case the different color scheme saved me alot of work. hehe
-
wow, great painting, and awesome banner!
-
The flames look great Guth. The feathers could maybe use a light drybrush, but that's nitpicking. If you're happy and done with them then they're done.
-
This is gold, boy, pure gold. Congratulations!
-
Great work as always. I like the dynamic banner. The rays and the landing phoenix make it really special. Only one thing I also had on my mind and I have to agree with Dave. (also that it's nitpicking)

I thought of a little bit more contrast like you did on the red feathers of the command group.
-
Thanks again guys!
The feathers are kommando khaki with a bleached bone highlight. (the contrast isnt strong but its there- i swear. :D) But the highlight were also kinda rushed, since I wanted them done at that point. Also I didnt want to go to white because I intentionally wanted them darker than the cloth for a more natural look.
So I call them done since way too much time went into them already. :)
Also those rays really work wonders, at first I just had the phoenix on there and it looked very "meh" but they add a great dynamic to the image. Those actually save many of my banners from looking dull. (like swordmasters tower)

Got a pack of mini airplanes on friday and also had my first game of "Check your 6", so freshly motivated I had to paint some at once. :)
Here are my 2 fighter squadrons for our upcomming Battle of Britain campaign:
Hawker Hurricanes and Spitfires:

Love the minis (Tumbling Dice 1/600), nice detail at a low price and quick to paint. But now its back to the painting table and some elves. :)
-
more elves... GREAT!
-
Motivated by the Hobbit movie I ended my painting break and painted up old Gandalf. :)

Since the blockade is now broken again, Ill continue work on the last bowelf unit to finally finish the 2000 points.
