Hi there,
I have a doubt: When basing the bats: Should be based with short front, (as usual flying units) or should be based with the long front?
Bofa Bats miniatures are design clearly to be based in short front, but count vampire bats seems to fit better in long front.
I have some bats of another nonGW and I dont know how to base them. could you help me?

I know I'm very tempted to bas carrion on a 40x60 stand {guessing that they wont end up in a weird formation.

Yes Carrington carrion also seems that the figures fit better based in long frontal. And, as I see in the pictures of the Games workshop page, Screamers flyers of the demon army too. Egales from Bofa are base also in long frontal, making a different with high elves eagles
but the way of basing makes a different in terms of gameplay and I can not find in the rules these exceptions. I thought that flying units always were base in short frontal.
Is there a norm to base flying units?
How do you base them or how are spected to be based in the tournaments?

Following flyers are based short base side:
Terradons
Undead Carrions
Giant Eagles (HE)
Pegasus Knights (Brets)
Gyrocopters
Greater Daemons
Following flyers are based long base side:
Daemon Flyers
Harpies for Dark Elf
Harpies for Chaos
It should be indicated at army description which base side the flyers have to be based at. (if I remember right)
I´m not shure now about "birdmen" for Dogs of War army.

Claus

As standard all monsters are based towards the small edge of the base. But there are exceptions, which are always explicitly mentioned in the army lists. Bats are such exceptions the same as harpies.
Birdmen are based towards the long edge of the base if I remember correctly.

Thanks,

It's a perennial problem with miniatures -- getting the darned minis to rank up properly. Carrion and Elf eagles are good examples of figures that don't rank up that well. I think bats are based on the long side, though, like harpies.
Actually, my thought was simply to allow one 40x60 base represent the entire unit, basically on the theory that they die quickly... and worst come to worst, I can use blank bases to represent a formation that has taken losses or become disordered.
Another thought was simply to use 2" by 1" bases and play using a 2cm=1" conversion. I've almost got enough elves to mount a separate army on the larger bases...
Bottom line, I have to wonder whether the hassle of 3-base units is worth the game-benefit: Impetus and the various napoleonic systems seem to have the right idea with 3" bases for one maneuver unit -- allows for some nice based dioramas, and strikes some complicated rules about formations, pursuit, etc.

Most players I know try to solve that problem through positioning the models at different heights. They model some kind of rock or similar and then put the flying models on them.

I war re-reading the armaster trial army. I assume the eagles in Albion armylist are based in short frontal as eagles in high elves armylist do.
Or are they based in long frontal as BOTFA do?
thanxs in advance

You're right. The Albion Giant Eagles are monsters, no extra rules mentioned in the army lists, so they are based towards short edge.
-
Albion Giant Eagles are indeed intended to be based on "short edge" bases.
I wrote the army list, have High Elves and wasn't going to rebase eagles for a different army :-)
I actually use a mix of Warmaster Eagles, MoW Eagles with the riders snipped off, Pendraken Eagles and the wizards on whirlwinds as "Giant Eagles" in my HE army. The Warmaster ones are a pain and I use them least, partly because i keep popping wings off trying to rank them up.

sorry my ignorance,
What is MoW eagles?

Oops that is 2 units of eagles I need to rebase then :o

What is MoW eagles?
Man O' War, I believe. Sailing ship combat.

Heh. Refreshingly irreverant... I take it you have some units of swordmasters from the elf character packs? ;)
-
I have the GW made Phoenix Guard but also have home made Swordmasters (Character pack figs), White Lions (Converted from more Character pack Swordmasters), Lothern Seaguard (front rank archers, rear rank spearmen), Shadow Warriors (paintjob on archers but with some Heroes from the character pack thrown in - all the elf with the cloak and his sword raised) and finally Dragon Princes (The mounted hero with the dragon crest on his helmet with Mighty Empires dragon's heads replacing the horses head). You'll gather that the decision to stop supplying Warmaster "bitz" hit me hard :-)
Still have a unit of Maiden Guard under construction but for the foreseeable future I'll be painting and repairing the house so figures will need to wait :-(
To drag this back on the thread topic, yes MoW is "Man O' War" and the eagles are a much better size for ranking up for a Warmaster unit. I staggered the position of the Warmaster eagles on their bases and bent the wings to different angles, but they're still a pain to use.

absolutly the GW are a pain (wings fall, and only one configuration to obtain the 3 bases allaign) but the figure is beautiful.
Woao! Answer_Mod_Ithoriel it seems you have made a lot of great ideas to convert elf units. It would be a pleasure if you have pics and post them in the forum
