Title: [WM] Basing... to static grass, or not to static grass?
Post by: amnar on August 24, 2011, 05:42:45 PM
Hi folks,

What are some of your experiences with static grass?  Does it look good, or does it tend to be too long?  Is there a preferred brand of static grass for WM scale figures?

Right now I have my bases sanded, and while it looks decent, it's missing a bit of oomph...

Any advice would be welcome.

Cheers

Some spots of static grass generaly look good.
I use the old GW one. Plus the new one when I want to have it "deeper".

I would recommend using static grass - the new GW one is fine. If you do go for a blend though (I mix a light, medium and a dark green to make my own blend) make tons so you don't run out mid way through an army.

You may wish to consider using the bleached "dead" static grass for armies like Khemri and Araby.

Its down to personal taste. Do a "test" stand and see what it look like is my advice.

Also, Baccus6mm does short static grass for small scale miniatures. Check it out here (https://www.baccus6mm.com/index.php?content=products/scenics&detail=scenics).

Can't use static grass myself as my throat has an allergic reaction every time I open a bag. :/

Thanks for the link Aquahog- I can't find any static grass though. Can't find much at all really... horrible website set up.

Well, I static grassed my chaos army using galeforce 9 static grass.  Looks great.  I was afraid the grass might be too high, but it's not really.  Overall it adds a lot of colour to bases.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I prefer old GW green flock. Unfortunately my reserves are nearly empty and I can't find any substitutes of similar quality (GF9 is not good IMHO, Woodland scenic flock has too small fraction).

Aye, the website is horrible but the customer service tends to make up for it. If you're in UK you can probably meet up with the guys at some show and deal with them in person.

The static grass is, for some reason, called flock and is located under the Baccus basing system. If you click on the image  next to the product to zoom in you can see that it is in fact static grass.

Shameless plug, but I used the premade static grass tufts and they work pretty well:

I'll take a few this weekend.  I'm especially proud of my General stand, all the Chaos gods are represented...  I'll be sure to add some :)
