So Dave, being my primary gaming partner, has been putting me to shame with his Warmaster elves goodness. Therefore, after a long hiatus of concentrating heavily on Epic, I've returned to painting my first specialist game love, WM. I have a lot of odds and ends that have been sitting around primed for a while, waiting for some attention, as well as some new stuff to fill out existing armies. First up, Dogs of War. Some wolf riders to serve as light cavalry:
A unit of pikemen:
Another unit of pikemen, in similar colors:
And then another one, this time in green:
-
These guys always look better in groups, so a family photo:
I'm stripping down another unit of these guys so I can have a full 4 units. The others were painted before I knew the existence of wash and other painting techniques, plus only had 6 per base. They'll have the green/tan scheme to round everything out.
-
I also finished this piece a couple days ago. I'll use it as a Vampire Counts character:
Enjoy!
-
They would work for Birdmen.....
-
Goblins with vuvuzelas and Santa hats! The Pikemen came out great.
-
Uhoh...... someone is setting up for a grudgematch ..... 8)
-
They would work for Birdmen.....
True, and with a much reduced silliness factor :P
Unfortunately, it's rather hard to find more sets of them out there. At the moment I'm stuck with only one base worth.
-
Aren't they the statues from GW's fantasy buildings? I bought some from a bits store on-line.
I never thought of them as a stand-in for bird-men though. I'll consider that...
-
Bitzbox in the UK has them, only one is in stock at the moment though.
-
Some more WM refurbishment, as well as a couple new units finished.
First up: the second unit of green/tan pikemen, stripped, beefed up with spare dudes, and re-painted.
The pikes for these were much more problematic/bendy as these minis have been in active gaming use for over 4 years.
-
Next, I painted a couple of BoFA elf bowmen units to fill out my high elf force. I used the same scheme as before, but used highlights and wash. I would recommend NOT following the paint scheme for the cloaks in the BoFA rulebook, as it resulted in some pretty odd-looking green/white stripes.
Next time, I'll have some harpies for Dark Elves/Chaos done. I am shamelessly ripping off Camilcil's basing scheme for the whole army.
-
Are two of those pikemen armed just with sharpened sticks?
-
Are two of those pikemen armed just with sharpened sticks?
You bet they are!! I was short 2 pikemen, but had a couple artillerymen with basically the same uniforms. I clipped the sponges into points. Their back-story is that some pikes were looted by orks, then re-looted by the regiment, and these two new recruits got them third-hand. They haven't earned their pikes yet, so they're stuck with the resultant pointy sticks :o .
I was able to get a couple more bases' worth of those building decoration ghosts. I think I'll use them as bats for my vampire counts, since I'm already maxed out on ethereal host.
-
Nice pikemen! What is the maker of the figures? pikes seem very long :)
-
They're 12mm ECW Minifigs armored/unarmored pikemen.
-
thanks, they look quite good. Being 12mm are they of a similar size as GW/Pendraken, etc?? A comparision picture with GW would be appreciated, if possible. ::)
-
They're too big compared to Pendraken figs (and consequently why Matt has them now :P). The size difference between the GW figs is less noticeable though.
-
thanks, they look quite good. Being 12mm are they of a similar size as GW/Pendraken, etc?? A comparision picture with GW would be appreciated, if possible. ::)
Thanks. Since they're being dull-coated at my spraying sub-contractor (i.e. Dave), it might be a while until I can get that comparison pic posted. Unless he wants to be a stand-up guy and take the comparison pic...
GW figs run a little big, so it's pretty hard to tell the difference between minifig 12mm and GW 10mm.
-
The refurbishment continues...
My next experiment was with my Old Glory 10mm ECW pikemen. I have 4 units, painted, based/flocked, and dull-coated, so I was wondering if I could graft my new painting methods (drybrushing, washes, multiple shades, etc.) onto my old one (black undercoat, and leaving the recesses black for the black-lined effect). As I really don't like starting completely over on figs that are complete (like I did with the last pikemen unit), the difference isn't stunning, but worth it IMO.
I did 2 units so I could compare them:
The unit on the right is the "before", left the "after." This brigade had different colored pants (pantaloons?); I think I'll go back and make the blue ones red.
The other brigade. They're more uniform:
The gaudy yellow flag gives away the old paintjob. I think the new one "pops" a lot more. Still a lot of black showing and the faces aren't ideal (devlan mud really muted those), but again, I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, just up the quality a bit.
A close up comparison:
-
i like it, yes they are improved...
-
More progress to report today.
I finished some empire great cannons I'm using as DoW galloper guns. Yeah, I know, no horses, too big, yadda yadda yadda. But they're painted the right colors...
-
Next, my first dark elf units, harpies.
As mentioned above, I imitated camilcil's basing scheme. I really liked the way it came out. I'm still collecting the rest of the army, so it'll be a while before I do any more DE stuff. I'm working on some Kislev horse archers for another unit of DoW light cavalry.
-
There's a noticeable lack of gallop in your Galloper Guns.
-
And a lack or niples on the harpies.....
That said, the "other" cast of canon works better for "horse"gun IMO
-
There's another cannon model?
-
There's another cannon model?
There are (to my knowledge) two guncarriages. The ones like thosein these pictures, which have the "box" in the trail and a smaller carriage that dont have that and which also allow you to place the MORTAR as alternative for the (smaller?) barrel. That carriage could take eg. spokes wheels from a charriot and would work as horsearty.

-
Nice work, I like the basing of the harpies, good job.
You could also just make one base with a cannon and put the "gallop" and some crew on the second base. Also "too big" is not a valid argument in Fantasy. :D
-
Ok, another minor update. I was able to get a hold of some more warhammer building decorations in the form of horseless four horsemen. So now I have a full three bases of them. I turned the original figures to the side, and now they're VC bats proxies:
If needed I can also follow Lex's suggestion about the birdmen for DoW.
-
They are super! I like em a lot. Are they from building boxset? or are non GW?
-

They're all cherubs from the Fortified Manor box set of Warhammer terrain. =-)

Matt, I want you to know I was going to refrain from a "What are you using them as? Ethereal Host?" comment but then you ignored today's other jab. So...
If it legal that you based them flying? Because Ethereal Host units have to stay on the ground.
-
Thanks jchaos. As Stormwind says, they are indeed from GW. I don't have the full kit though; I got a couple sets of the decorations from ebay. Anyone want some plastic ivy and some spikes with skulls on them? :P
@Dave: ::) Well obviously they're not ethereal hosts, since they're flying... duh oooo you make me sooo mad!! ::)
(happy now? You got your response. Now the SG world knows how annoying our gaming group is :P )
-
Not tempted to keep the plastic ivy for some Wood elves or ruins? The statues that come with the kit look /perfect/ for making free standing statues for Empire scenery / centrepieces for a village.
-
Ok, plodding along with another minor update. I'm still working on BoFA stuff: human spearmen and archers that are going to be elves, and some eagles.
As for completed stuff, Kislevite horse archers for use with Dogs of War:
I tried a different basing scheme with this unit - it came out alright but the flock I used seems to need more green to stand out. no matter
-
Looks good! Dull green seems appropriate for Steppe Archers. =)
-
Great looking horse archers!
-
Those look great!
-
Love your horse arachers, the basing looks great.
I like your little flying demons and your harpies as well. Very good.
If i do another harpy unit, i think i'll use your colour scheme for them :)
-
Thanks guys - high praise indeed.
Camicil, you should copy the harpy bases as well, as I ripped off that scheme from you :P
-
Can you say "pro-crast-in-ation"? An update on working through my WM backlog before I have to get to some real work...
I think I am done with my high elves. After a few years sitting on some BoFA units, finally got them finished last night. These are eagles, and human spearmen and archers that I'm using as elves. For some reason, the latter turned out to be a royal pain in the ass - lot's of touch-up, a ton of brown shades, and plenty of "Oh my GOD, these are STILL in my to-do pile?!?" They definitely look better than my other HE stuff, but they will by dying first in any battle in which I use them. Vindictive? what are you talking about? :P
Spearmen:
Archers:
Eagles:
New eagles compared with old ones:
-
"what makes them elves instead of just some dudes?" You might ask? Two things: they're in the same scheme as my other elves (green), but more importantly, they're all blondes.
Group shot:
And a big picture status update on the WM Phase II project: Before I can start my dark elves, I have a bunch of orks and goblins (mainly goblins) that have to be painted:
The "desk drawer to-do pile":
As you can see, I'm running out of storage space for my armies. There are epic titans, an objective marker, my WM dwarves, and the black-primed stuff are goblins, goblin fanatics, fanatic cannons, an empire siege gun, giant and regular-sized squiggs, just to name a few.
Hopefully I have the willpower to get to this stuff (and three chaos blisters) before starting the more interesting dark elves.
-
wow we can peep a lot goblins in their way!!
High elves are awesome, (I found particulary boring painting those figures) and eagles are great too
-
The High Elves look great! Will you be bringing them on Saturday?
-
I really like the clean painting of your BoFA miniatures.
I also like the look of the upcoming WM, and like your epic models.
-
Thanks guys.
Ed, I'm bringing the Dogs of War again. One of these days I'll actually use the elves instead of just farming them out as stand-ins for Dave's army.
The first coats of paint are going on the goblins and squiggs tonight. Hopefully more updates coming soon... but not too soon heh.
-
Wow, your painting makes even the tiny bland space marines from the 90s look good!
-
Update time! Got a good chunk of goblins and goblin-friends done. These were really fun to paint, especially the squiggs. Speaking of which...
Squigg herds. I was able to get a hold of a bunch of O&G command a while back and the number of squiggs gives some indication to just how much:
-
Next, Fanatics. There's no special unit for these guys, so I'll just use them as goblins:
And their cannons:
These will work for doom-divers (or rock lobbas in the standard list)
-
The stupid green flecks are rogue pieces of flock. pay no attention to them.
The giant squiggs, stand-ins for giants, with their courageous/insane herders:
These are standard WM squiggs with some goblin characters/crewmen. I have a third one that is going to get some tiny bat-like wings and a riding goblin for a wyvern monstrous mount. He's in the works right now.
-
And finally, a spare ogre for O&G command. He's got a meat cleaver/sword and a gnoblar for a "to go" lunch on his back. It's become more and more likely that he's going to be the goblin army's general, as the thought of a rebellious ogre striking it out on his own and beating a horde of goblins into submission is just too funny to ignore.
Enjoy!
-
Oh wow! Those are fabulous! I love the diligence of picking out the special command units and making a "normal" unit out of them (Like the swordsmen from Empire).
-
wow that ideas really struck on me! very original and great paint. A pleasure to see them. congrat and thumps up
-
Looks great Matt! Does this mean that you're starting a goblin Army?
-
Thanks Stormwind, Jchaos, and Ed. High praise indeed.
@Ed: oh yes, this is the beginning of a goblin army. I have a couple goblin units made out of more command that are next. 4 pump wagons are on the drawing board too.
-
Awesome! Can't wait to see it!
I am willing to cast up your (original) sculpts/models in resin, if that will help at all.
-
I am willing to cast up your (original) sculpts/models in resin, if that will help at all.
Do you mean the pump wagons? I'll think about that when I'm constructing them then.
[I am aware of DaveC's excellent models of said pump wagons by the way]
-
Yep, the pump wagons. DaveC did some great ones. I figure if I cast yours I can keep a copy or two....
-
Ha ha, pump wagons in 10mm scale - that's going to be a beautiful sight! =)
-
Ooooohhhh!!
I'll help pay for some pump wagon moulds to be made if I can get a couple.
Also - make up some Doom Divers too.... they would look sweeeeet as Rock Lobber substitutes!
-
I don't usually put WIP pics into this blog, but for the pump wagons I'll make an exception. These were a joy to make. My material of choice is balsa wood for the first one:
The crew is a mix of wolf chariot riders and some command. That black blob on the left side of the platform is a mushroom - if any army is going to have machinery rotting away with fungus, I figure it has to be the goblins ;D
-
Oh, and the wheels are from skaven artillery.
This next one uses a 15mm fantasy catapult as a chassis, built up with more balsa. It might be hard to see because of the black primer on a black plastic base, but it's squigg-powered, Flintstones-style. I had some extra spiky bits and sacrificed a ladder from the WM siege pack. I'll add some ropes to connect the squiggs to the chassis at some point.
On casting these: casting these particular ones (especially the second one) is probably a no-go as this would require their destruction. However, think of these as a "feasibility study". I can build the first one again, just in pieces. I'll most likely add in some plastic "nails" and other plates to simulate the wood being held together. That's going to require a whole lot of patience and some tweezers.
-
great looking! engenieer in chef!
-
Such clever use of bits! Very good!
-
Super Job!
-
Thanks guys. Depending on how things go on BlackEd's end, there might be many multiples of those in the future ;D
An orc hero:
The centerpiece of the army, a wyvern monstrous mount. At this point, he's aptly named a squiggern:
those wings are spare parts from a friend's malifaux bits box. The goblin is a shaman character with GS legs and elongated coat, his staff replaced by a cleaver/sword and mace replaced by the horn on the squigg's forehead :P. Heavy credit for this concept ("goblin riding bumblebee with teeth") goes to Dave - I wouldn't have tried it if I had to make some sort of saddle because it wouldn't have looked "right".
-
Your squig is delightfully terrifying <3
-
Excellent squiggern... I may be stealing that idea
-
Soo nice and have a lot of kinetc! great imagination indeed
-
Awesome, just awesome!
I love it when people scratch build unique units, it really brings the game background alive.
Dave
-
Has he officially been named Squiggums?
-
Thanks guys. I really enjoyed putting this one together and painting it, just because of the comedic value.
Has he officially been named Squiggums?
That's a possibility, but I'm willing to entertain other suggestions from the SG community 8)
Squiggbert is also entertaining, I think.
-
Great looking minis! Love the amount of work that goes into the little details.
Nice work on the unisquigg, Squagg the magnificent. :)
-
He actually looks like he's kind of trying to be stealthy, on his tip toes. You should put a "Shhhhh, they'll never hear us" caption on him!
Dave

Wow, this forum actually has a warning against thread necromancy:
"Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic."
Pretty sure I want to reply to my own thread, since I have some painting updates :P
More goblins have been completed. I completed two each of the pump wagons cast by BlackEd:
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1402.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1402.jpg.html)
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1404.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1404.jpg.html)
And then there was the band. I still had a bunch of goblin drummers hanging around and since the stats for goblins are so craptacular, who's to say that I can't have a full unit of musicians? Here they are in all their off-beat, off-key glory:
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1405.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1405.jpg.html)
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1406.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1406.jpg.html)
finally a small side-note: feasibility test complete; Bretonnians may be in my painting future.
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1407.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1407.jpg.html)
(http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/captPiett/IMG_1408.jpg) (http://s355.photobucket.com/user/captPiett/media/IMG_1408.jpg.html)
That is all. Hopefully there will be another update in fewer than 120 days ;)
-
Very nice man, love the goblins especially the pump wagons. I was curious do you seal your gravel with a watered down pva/wood glue after gluing it on? The reason i ask is i'm not diggin the chunky look, i'm not saying your painting is bad at all just not for me. Also night goblins have a special place in my heart i love yours!
-
Those are all spectacular! Your knights in particular are very swish!
I've got my eye on a Bret army auction - hoping to have a shot at it soon. :-X
-
Thanks gents. For the bases, I use watered down Elmer's (white) glue to put down course flock in clumps, then finer stuff covers the rest of the base. Then I seal it with another layer of watered down glue. The wyvern and Orc character have all course flock though, probably too big for the scale. I haven't tried to be consistent in my basing of the goblins at all.
-
wow nice colours!
-
Really great models and painting job is ok. I like the musicians :)
-
