And we're into the second month... who's still with us?
-
I posted my January Stuff just under the wire - though now that I have my camera back, I should be able to post more frequently now. I still have quite a lot of Kislev to paint for my friend...
Tristan
-
Still here. It's crunch time at work, and the general I'm working on involves more sculpting/modelling than I anticipated...
-
I'm also trying my best! I'm hoping to get a unit of Blazing Sun knights, a unit of Halberds and a couple of quicker things done this month (likely skirmishers and another character, maybe the general and his little table).
-
If I manage to get two infantries will be fine for me. The more I get this month the best for the army :)
-
The odaiko drums are coming along. They are BIG in 10mm scale. I finished one drum stand this morning and almost have the second finished. I'll need to expand the general's base to include the drums.
The drums themselves need the second drum head sculpted on, and then I need to add the attachment points used to move the drums.
After (or while) I work on the general I will start on a unit of mounted Samurai.
-
OK, I posted an update in my thread. Please take a look!
-
Here are the latest recruits to the Talabheim army, some Knights of the Blazing Sun:

I'm not entirely happy with this unit :-\ but it's nice to have them finished :).
-
Holy wow, PW, those are fabulous! <3
-
Thanks. I found these tricky to paint as I couldn't get a yellow that entirely satisfied me. First it was too bright, then too muted and now a sort of half-way house that I can live with. I'll almost be glad to get back to painting red and white...
Why is it that you don't notice things you miss until miniatures are varnished, based and uploaded to forums? (I've just noticed that I haven't painted the seal/scroll thingy on the unit champion's reigns. That's a job for tomorrow!
-
Do you varnish by spray or by hand? Either way, what brand do you use?
-
Currently I'm painting on GW's gloss varnish for protection and then spraying with GW's varnish. I've had some nightmares with their stuff in the past but the can I've got at the moment works well and I like the slightly glossy finish as it doesn't dull the metals too much and gives something of a free highlight to the miniatures into the bargain.
-
OK cool - thanks for the tip - I'm a big painting noob so having a basic plan for "sealing" the minis is good to know.
-
It's probably fair to say that lots of people don't like GW's varnish. It can (and has to me) make a mess of miniatures. I'ds strongly advise you to test spray something each time you spray with it and to (a) make sure that the can isn't too cold when you use it (b) shake it like a deranged gorilla, (c) spray somewhere that isn't too cold or damp. If you like super-matt finishes people really like testor's dullcote (I don't though, it's too matt for my tastes and can make metals look a little grey).
-
I trnd to use Krylon Gloss Varnish to protect, and GW Matte to 'deshine'
-
PW: <Angelic_halo on> I am so sorry to hear you are disappointed with the unit. I will gladly give them a good home so you don't need to see them any more. <Angelic_halo off/>
Joking aside, that unit looks rather awesome to me. I like the mid-yellow mixed with the darker color. The banner is absolutely fabulous.
As for sealing miniatures, I used Krylon gloss varnish (now with extra shine!) for protection, and use Polly S Figure Flat for the matt finish, although I prefer Testor's Dullcoat. I've been experimenting with going back with some of GW's brush-on high gloss finish to hit areas that I want shiny on purpose, like metals. I left most of my Daemons shiny, because it makes for a 'wet' look that I wanted. After all, slimy Daemons are scarier than Daemons with good hygiene.
-
That's really kind, but I couldn't possibly burden you with such a task! ;D
Now that the grass is on them I'm starting to warm to them a little (it distract the eye!) - they'll certainly do to represent the knights unit with whatever magic item I need to buy to spend those last five points or so.
-
I like those blazing suns knights. The banner is awesome. It is not as neaty and clear as your units used to be, but yellow is a very tricky colour. With black undercoat allways the yellow colour always take wierd-mud tone. Said that, I like your unit, do not understand me wrong.
My paint this month is delayed a lot, I'm still in... but a little slow :o
-
Time for an army shot:
What this says to me is that I really really need to paint some infantry!
-
Looking good! Any chance for a closer look? =3
-
That is a really strike force. Maybe some infantry is needed?
-
The pic is way too small! :) We wanna see them in all their glory!
-
Thanks for the nice comments, I always like seeing army shots and thought I'd set one up.
I'd like to show a bigger picture but I can't work out how to get a bigger one up. This is, I think, the full size Photobucket will allow. Anyone have any suggestions?
-
have you try change the width parameter [IMG width=1000]
-
Thanks, that worked. I've amended my post with a bigger version.
-
Disastrous month!! I should end some infantry right now because I did not make any entry to the christian army this month :-\
-
My february contribution is some castellanos infantry,
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/Medieval%20WM/infantry.jpg)
-
Nice work, I really like the inclusion of a mounted character in the ranks. I think I'll try this with my next Empire unit (though I worry that the characters aren't quite to scale with the halberdiers).
-
I have no flag/banner bearer so I used to introduce a mounted dude to mark the central base. I do this when the mounted command of the unit have sense. In this case, being a medieval army is coherent.
Never try this with GW so hoping to see how it looks like with the huge knights of empire.
-
Still in February, and my second contribution (by the skin of my theet).
This time is a templar unit of knights on foot. It works as an elite unit of infantry, following the scheme of colours used in the mounted templars and with crosses in the heraldic
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/Medieval%20WM/templaronfoot.jpg)
-
Funny you should mention the mounted character - I was surprised to find my Elf spearmen have a mounted leader for the command unit. I think it adds some variety to a limited sculpt!
Great work on the shield variety here!
-
Yep, the central strips of high elves units are superb
-
I have actually got around to painting stuff, I'm just slow to photograph it.
Here's a Giant for Februray:
And Wolf Riders that I did in January
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i108/Geep_2006/JanuaryWolfRiders.png)
Not good photos... or paintjobs really, but oh well.
The Giant is supposed to be tanned (as I can't imagine them finding much shade) but it seems to just make him a brownish blob at a distance.
The Wolf Rider wolves are supposed to be more like wild dogs, hence the varied colours. The army also has a lot of unusually bright colours- the background is that they're from the Massif Orcal, and have taken on some knightly habits. They take the bright clothing and caparisons of knights for their clothing.
-
Great background! I like the mix of colors for the wolves-wild dogs, specialist the white one with the eye and lips very neaty in black. It has strong.
good job Geep
-
I actually do not have any new finished minis to show. I have been working on a large block painting of 14 cavalry units, and I am about 3/4 of the way through them. I should have them finished for the March TOWP, and maybe some of the ten infantry units left in the Kislev Army....
<Jeremy Clarkson Mode> In true Top Gear fashion, ambitious, but rubbish! </Jeremy Clarkson Mode>

take pictures of what you have painted so far Tristan! We want to see!
In case you all missed it, I am finished with the Samurai General:

Great work on the drums there! I was a little sceptical but it's come together nicely!
-
Hey black edd those drums are astonishing!! great detail on the wood amd great idea also.
Did it works as the commander unit or some type of mount like the waraltar in Empire or dwarf anvil or something?
@Tristan Hoag, let's what you bring next month... it sound promising. by the way Clarkson is great! should I make an empire dumptankist figure named Sir Clarkson?
-
JChaos: This is the general's stand, no mounts or anything like that. This started life as a 40mmx40mm stand, but is grew when I wanted to add the taiko drums. There is room to add a retinue if needed, or a marker of any divine ancestry that was purchased.
Hmmm.....
Great. Now I'm thinking of adding to it!

Hehehe... you could give it a banner that says 'POWER!'...
-
What a great end to the February tale, I was starting to think the thing had all but fizzled out and then this happens on the bonus leap-year day! For me the stand-out thing has to be the wood of the drums in BlackEd's diorama, they're very realistic. Now I feel re-motivated to get something painted after a very quiet painting month, thanks everyone!
-
Great looking general stand BlackEd- it's an interesting idea and it must really stand out on the field.
@jchaos79- Thanks!
