Title: GothiComp 2012 - Winners!
Post by: horizon on April 02, 2012, 08:43:37 AM
Hi,

GothiComp 2012

Following are the rules for GothiComp 2012, feedback appreciated:

Rules GothiComp 2012.

This is the eight annual GothiComp, and will be run in a similar way to last years event. A very slight alteration of the categories has been made.

The Goal
The general aim of this competition is simply to encourage players to get painting and show off what they can do. I encourage people to enter no matter how good or bad their painting and converting skills are.

The Deadline
This competition will open Tuesday may 1, 2012, and the deadline for submissions is Tuesday 31st July 2012, 4pm (CET time).

The Categories

General note: we encourage new ships not been shown in a previous edition of GothiComp. Of course vessels that have been completely repainted are allowed again.

The Single Ship/Squadron entry
Each separate entry should consist of a single miniature (being capital ships) to be used for Battlefleet Gothic (however, note that conversions, scratch builds and even vessels from outside manufacturers are welcome). The only exception to this is:

- If the vessel is a light cruiser or equivalent, one or two vessels may be submitted as a single entry in the same photograph. Space Marine Strike Cruisers can be treated as light cruisers.

Aside from this stipulation, the entry is largely down to the participant.

The community will vote on the entries as usual.

One-Hit Category
This category consists of all 1 hit-point structures & vessels in the game of Battlefleet Gothic. Entries may consist from 1 to 6 models.

The community will vote on the entries as usual.

In addition, there will be a 'conversion prize' chosen from single ship & one hit category. This will be a token prize for one entry based on the skill and style of any conversion work which has gone into the vessel, in an effort to encourage creativity in modelling as well as painting. This will be judged by a select panel. All entries are automatically submitted into both competitions simultaneously. The judges for the conversion prize are myself, Warmaster Nice and Cybershadow.

The fleet category
Each separate entry should consist of a fleet worth at least 500 and a maximum of  2000 points following the standard BFG list or equivalent (the 2010 drafts are allowed even if GW has not uploaded them by then) .

The community will vote on the entries as usual.

The Prizes

Single Ship Category:
1x Zeus Light Cruiser [mangozac]

One hit Category
4x Zeus Destroyers [mangozac]

Conversion Category:
2x Strike cruiser conversion kits [mangozac]

Fleet Category:
2x Cold Navy Terran Seraphim Cruiser (metal) [fracas]

The Pictures
You should submit a single picture per entry, no more. Each photograph should be no more than 3 megabytes large. The pixel width should not exceed 1024 x 768.

The Submission
To submit a picture of your vessel to this competition, you simply mail it at: comps@tacticalwargames.net

Make sure the header of the email contains the following: ship name / class name

Note that you do not have to be a member of the http://www.tacticalwargames.net boards to enter this competition but in order to vote you will have to sign up.

We will compile a gallery of the entrants which will be available online. This gallery will remain as a permanent fixture to the site, and so you will be able to browse the pictures in the future. Please note, I am sure that there will be a rush in the last 24 hours before the end of this competition, therefore please don't wait until the last few hours if you can avoid it.

The Voting
Voting will take place here on these boards. Entries will be split into heats. The winner of each heat will go through to the next round until a winner is determined. Please note that entries will be placed into heats in the order in which they are submitted here. Note: having multiple entries from one participant will be spread.

The voting period lasts 7 days.

The voting results will be shown after the poll ends.

Possible tiebreakers depend upon number of entries.

Note that the ship and/or class name will be shown, anomynous upon request otherwise name will be shown.

Additional Rules
All decisions are final, any prizes are non-negotiable and the competition organizers reserve the right to remove competition entries or request that they are resubmitted or altered. We will hopefully never need this stuff, but just in case...

That is it. Feel free to email me with any questions that you may have. Now, what are you doing still reading this? Get painting!

Have fun!

Single ship or squadron says one ship only unless they are light cruisers which may have two. What are the requirements for a squadron of escorts?
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Concept rules
Post by: horizon on April 02, 2012, 07:17:57 PM
Escorts go into the one hit category.

Ah ok, the "structures" comment threw me off I was thinking that group was just for orbital platforms  :P

Good, I shall make it a tad clearer.

I have a question, tyranids razorfield cruisers are suposed to be light cruiser? they have 6 structure points. :o
I guess eldar player could have the same question.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Concept rules
Post by: horizon on April 20, 2012, 02:27:33 PM
Hey,

I see. It is a bit race dependant on what is a light cruiser. For example the Eldar do have light cruisers with 4 hits. The normal ones have 6.

For 'Nids it is a cruiser as well even though there isn't a specific light cruiser.

Is it possible to participate with same fleet in several categories? For example as single ship/squadron and fleet 1500 sized?

Looking at other editions It seems, I understand you can participate in the 3 categories with your fleet. But maybe I am wrong :o.

Hi,

all, read this:
http://sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=4678.msg34399;boardseen#new

This means the forum & site will be down from july 24 into july 26 if all goes well.

The new website will be:
www.specialist-arms.com

This site will host the GothiComp gallery (and more).

This site movement does not hinder Submissions in anyway.

best regards,
horizon

Hello all! first time poster and first time competitor in Gothicomp. I just submitted my Biel Tan Eldar fleet. I'd finished half of it years ago and finally finished the other half last night! GW shades and dry pigments are awesome! I did a minor conversion replacing the logo on Yriels flagship with the Biel Tan craftworld symbol. I can't wait to see all the other entries!

Great work guys!
Done my round 1 voting.

Which brings me to my favourite gripe... sorry to go on about it again, but I can't help it.
Anyway, I really think that at least the first round of voting should allow for multiple votes. Once I found myself in a situation where I wanted to vote for more than one entry in quite a few of the heats, but had to decide on just one. :(

Great entries all round, though. Mightily impressed!

It's my first competition...it's the first time that I show in this way my model. I'm not sure to be "good enough" to this kind of things...
But when I see my ship...when I see my ship versus the other ship...
It's wonderful!!!
Oh my...
I don't mind if I will or not win something because only see my ship near the other's in that page, is enough!

I have voted. But, it really wasnt easy and in a couple of categories I spent ages trying to decide.

This is a fair comment. But remember that there is only one winner and no 'second prize'. At some point, everyone needs to pick one and only one. Now, I know that it changes the competition against an entry if people are allowed multiple votes in a category, but it might also mean that we need three rounds instead of two.

Well, the idea is to get everyone having fun and getting involved, and for me the gallery is the best result of this every year, which stays available as inspiration (except between site moves, obviously!).

Is it only me or links to hall of fame and older galleries not working after forum moved?

Cybershadow is still transfering them to this new website.

And yes, the gallery is the boost of the competition each year to me as well. And thats why I keep running it.

Im a little disappointed by not seeing the voting results anymore.

In previous editions you could see them. I think the best solution would be making them visible only to the users who already voted.

In that way i could follow the voting process. I would be interested if there is a head up race somewhere that changes. Only seeing the results in the end isnt as thrilling in my opinion.

Like it is now ppl. dont have a reason to come back here until after a week.

Really? I actually thought that having a larger number of votes would decrease the chances of a draw, rather than increase it.
Either way, personally I wouldn't mind an additional round of voting to resolve any draws, if it is required.

I would love to see the result (thus far) after I've voted. Adds to the excitement in my book.

Idea, Cybershadow, Schwager, others: shall I do an inbetween round where numbers 2 of each heat go against eachother. Two votes per user. Winner to final. 3 Days of voting.

Is there a limit to how many pictures you can put on one round? It seems like the best option would be to just put them all in one heat and be done with it.

I kinda like the idea. I will admit that there were a couple of heats that my #2 pick was better than the #1 pick in another. Seems like some sweet stuff might be getting the shaft by the luck of the draw, I mean who wants to pick between Mozart and Beethoven, right? ;) (of course that's the chance you take when you enter but still)

Hi,

Andrew, yes that is possible. I tried and create a poll of infinite options (I went to 33 and still could go on). Such a setup would require multiple votes per user to be succesfull.

Jimmy, agreed on that. The nr2 in a heat could be nr2 overall as well.

My apologies. I misunderstood.

I have no problem with this, but this is not technically second place. We could come up with an ultra complex system for finding a ranking of all submissions, but with a single prize and as a competition which is a bit of fun, there is a danger of over-complicating the voting system.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!

One or two years back i gave the feedback that i would like a tie-breaker of the 2nd placed.

I dont think its important to know who is second, third and all the places. But as a person taking part regularily im interested how in a general sense my entry would have permormed if it wasnt up against the one super dominating winner.

So i think it makes sense to give the 2nd placed a chance (as it was last year i think) if there are enough total entries to make it worthwhile.

Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!
Post by: horizon on August 16, 2012, 12:35:02 PM
Hey,

correct, last year we did this as well. Was a good voting which did show some differences.

The tiebreaker ship winner beated two heat winners and tied with three other ones.

The tiebreaker fleet winner ended fourth out of five in the final.

So for the people in 2nd place it can be encouraging to see they can go up / are on par with / against other finalists/heat winners.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!
Post by: CyberShadow on August 16, 2012, 12:35:51 PM
Just to clarify, do you mean 'the submission that came second in the final round of voting' (which should be obvious from the number of votes) or do you mean 'an extra round of voting consisting of the second place submission in every round one result'?

I just want to be clear what the intention is.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!
Post by: AndrewChristlieb on August 16, 2012, 12:37:58 PM
Hum i dont really see why the voting would have to be different if they were all lined up in one heat. Just have everyone cast their one vote for the one they like the most. The worst that could happen is you might have to do a tie breaker round. As with some of the previous comments there are some entrys that are my second choice in their heat but would be first pick in others. On the other hand i already know who i would put my vote in for in the end anyway so why not just jump right to the end and line all of them up against each other?

All that aside i agree that the best of the second place options should get another chance in the final vote, kind of a wild card idea.
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!
Post by: horizon on August 16, 2012, 12:42:58 PM
Hey Cybershadow:

intention: from the ship category for sure, others doubtful.

From the round one heats we place the ships that ended up in 2nd place in their own heat in a tiebreaker round.
So five 2nd places against eachother. Winner of this goes to final round.

See the archive for last year tiebreaker per example.

Andrew,
one big poll. That's how most competitions run.
the heat system dates back from having few poll options. And I am a fan of heats... lolz
if more people like the big poll: sure.
multiple votes per user though!
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!

@CyberShadow

We are talking about the 2nd places of the first round heats.

@AndrewChrislieb

It would be an option i could live with as well. BUT i think that a very strong entry would grab almost all votes if you can only have one vote. In that way we would have a certain winner but the votes on the rest of the field might be a little unsatisfying. Something like this could happen:

A) 50
B) 20
C) 2
D) 1
E) 2
F) 0
G) 0
 and so on

Is there a system where you could give a user e.g. 5 votes but he could give multiple votes to one entry? So i could spread my 5 votes liek this:

a) 3 (i think it should win)
c) 1 (good as well)
e)1 (good as well)

To be honest i dont think thats the point. Its the result that has to happen.

- Prices attract ppl. so more will take part. You dont have too many prices so tere is only one winner

But there are a lot of ppl entering. Some of them will know they wont win, still they hope not to be the worst or would like to get into the final at least. So all of them should have a chance of seeing there performance. Not only the obvious winner.

And the second thing it is about is to motivate ppl painting and collecting the BFG fan-work over the years.

So i think there are at least two points that are more important than finding the winner.

multiple votes per user though!

That would definitely be my preferred option (which I have been advocating since the discussion started), nice and simple, and everyone can vote for all the entries they like.

We could then always tuck on a finals round, where the top 5 (or however many) from each category go into a single vote poll to determine the overall winners. Although I don't think it's necessary, it may appeal to those that like heats and multiple rounds of voting ;)

What do you think about Caine's arguments?
Title: Re: GothiComp 2012 - Round One Voting!
Post by: AndrewChristlieb on August 17, 2012, 03:16:20 PM
I dont think caine is really arguing against all the entrys being on one vote, just the execution of such a vote. Personally i would not have a problem with his suggestion either tho, your going to end up with the same result tho as just one vote each. To get a true feeling for where each model places voters would have to rank each entry from 1-? This would give a more accurate placing for each entry.

A top five vote off would be nice if there was only one large vote. First its pretty likely that some of the top five were ones that some voters didnot vote for originally and with the smaller field would decide to go with someone other than the number one pick. Also it would prolong the competition which might help to attract more attention.

Given the feedback I shall allow 2 votes per user in the ship category final.

With four participants in the other competitions I think one vote is sufficient. Five is the turning point to allow 2 votes.
