Title: playing a game online
Post by: Colonel Kane on May 30, 2012, 05:35:38 AM
Does anyone know of any way to play a game of WM online? I know of universal battle, but it seems to me that you have to pay to create your army to play with. I know you can do a campaign over the net, thanks DOG and pw, but I am talking about playing out the battle over the net.  It would help if it was free too. I am not trying to moan about, but money is tight and I try to spend as little as I have to to play any game. I use alot of counters for every game I get time to play. Thanks for any help.

I used to play Warhammer and Mordheim games using the system outlined here:
http://z14.invisionfree.com/The_Lost_Glade/index.php?s=8e114c6970e572cb4c9958e189848261&showforum=30 (http://z14.invisionfree.com/The_Lost_Glade/index.php?s=8e114c6970e572cb4c9958e189848261&showforum=30)

Unfortunately that site is now old enough that all of the actual battle threads etc. have been lost, but the basic idea is simple- use a program with graphics layers to move units about the map, rolling the dice either yourself in real life or using an 'online dice roller' if you don't want to rely on trust (online rollers often produce a trackable document you can use to prove the die rolls).

It's obviously a pretty crude system, but that also made it easy for anyone to play- and completely free.

The main problem was speed of play (improved if you play by MSN, or with very regular forum goers, or by organising a time when both users are active on the forum).

Edit:
This is an old pic of an in-progress game

A grid overlay is used to measure movement, but it's easier to see the action by posting the image without it. Both players work off the one map and grid combination to make sure there's no mis-alignment or stretching issues (ie. One player posts each layer making the map and grid, the other player copies them)

It sound kinda like the thought I had to use a drafting software to run battles and send the files through email. I just can't seem to find a good free software that I would trust to download that would be simple enough for anyone to use.

Graphics gale (which I think is in a link from the above linked post) was fairly easy and decent. I never had any security issues with it either.

There's also ImageJ- it's a free version of the program Fiji (or a similar name to Fiji). I've never used it for this kind of work, but it's probably capable, and I think it's available to the general public. From memory it's a program developed and shared by a university, so I don't think it's likely to have security issues either.

Vassal has no module for the game. Maybe if th ere was a generic one that could be used. Hmmm....

I am still around, although I have not been checking the forums often since nobody has seemed to want to play another game online, so sorry for being late to post.

I am still a beginner, but if you want to play through the forum with http://www.battlechronicler.com/ (http://www.battlechronicler.com/) I would be more than willing.

You can see my last game (unfortunately awhile ago) as jchaos posted at http://sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=3978.0 (http://sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=3978.0)

You might want to download the software and fool around with it first. It is advertised as a battle reporting tool but it works just like any generic turn based miniatures game.
