Title: Home Back
Post by: calmacil on June 29, 2012, 10:45:46 AM
When a flyer unit homes back can it turn to face any direction?

Or does it have to keep the same formation, and facing?

Does depend on which ruleset you use.

Going after the latest ruleset you are not allowed to change facing.

Going after the latest ruleset you are not allowed to change facing.

Which was done to lessen the exploit......

Not trying to sound critic towards rules or rulewriters, but...

To me it seems odd that a unit may not change facing after it has homed (=moved).

As a matter a fact, logically any unit will change to face the direction in which it moves/flies while moving.
So when ending a home, if any restriction should apply, the unit should be keeping the facing it had while moving.

But even then, it sort of contradicts all other movement ideas in WM.
Meaning, all movement has the back-idea of being flowing and not restricted by compulsary wheels and turns (and facings).

Just some thoughts. :)

I tend to agree with wmchaos2000 that the flyer should end (or have the option to end) its move facing the hero it is travelling towards... However the rules clearly say this is not the case. On the whole i think this is a good thing and works in the name of balance rather than logic.

@mchaos and honestmistake.

You can play it that way but to say it honestly .... in the hand of a skilled player this option becomes a nightmare for any oponent because you can to a lot of tactical tricks having this option.

That´s ... why I myself prefer the newer rule not to change formation and direction it faces.....and I´m playing with flyers all the time as it is one of the best units in game in every army that has the option for flyers.

I agree Claus.... While it makes sense for them to change facing it would make them even more powerful and versatile which would be a very bad thing, especially for opponents with no flyers

In my part of the world, everyone that can, will use flyers, two at 2k.
So almost everyone has the opportunity to "exploit" the rules and feast on unsupported flanks. Which brings a status que and thereby a silent agrement that says it is ok to "do so", if the opportunity immerses.
On "topic", if a unit in one part of the movement phase is not allowed to reform, and there is no penaltys or battlefield reasons why not, and another unit in the same movement phase (or any other) is allowed to reform, which is also without the same "restrictions", why should their respectively rules differ?
The written answer "balance of play", i do not buy that, it is not a reason, it is a by rulewriter (and testplayers) decided text to avoid a problem without addressing it in a logic, battlefieldish way. So to speak.  :D

How about, "the unit faces the direction in which it homed back, and by the first order it gets it can only move 100cm 'minus' home distance"?
(100-D6x10cm, D6=result of home back)

@wmchaos

At the end it is how you agree on it with your gaming partner.

We have following volunteer restrictions for flyers in our gaming group.

1) Movement 100cm
2) Charge Range 60cm
3) No formation change during home back

This helped a lot to balance them.
