I'm new to the boards here but I've been painting for 15 some years. I wanted to direct everyone to a little blog of mine I just started. Current projects are as follows:
[EPIC] Crimson Fist Space Marine Company
[WM] Vampire Counts Army
[WM] Lizardman Army
http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/ (http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/)
Please keep checking daily for updates. Would love to hear your comments as well. Thanks!
-
Jonathan.....
Epic is actually commonly seen as 6 mm..... just a heads up.
-
The marines look really nice, particularly the Warden.
Have you considered basing them on the newer (long thin) bases, it's just personal preference but I think they let you see the figures better and give a less uniform structure to the squads (the holes aren't all in line).
-
Good painting!
I'd love to see some warmaster in the future!
Dave

Is Warmaster 10mm? I didn't break out my ruler, but I may just have to! Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated.
Have you considered basing them on the newer (long thin) bases.
I considered it, but I wanted sort of regimented units... I don't have the actual rule-set but what is most commonly used? Long thin or square 5's? Are both viable in-game?
-
Nice job! WM is indeed 10mm, although the GW sculpts tend toward the "heroic 10mm" (i.e. close to 12)
-
Both base sizes are game-legal (the rules for basing are fairly flexible). Most people seem to use the long-thin bases (that's what the figures come with now) but it's not unusual to see square and round bases. Long-thin bases migh offer a slight in-game advantage in that they'd allow you to cover more ground (units have a 'zone of control' of 5cm which can't be entered without going into combat).
-
If I got hold of Tyranids, or was using Orks, I might use the round 25mm bases to show how rag-tag my units are - even if it's a disadvantage. But I find the long thin strips so much easier to paint then the square ones, so I use them for my space wolves. = )

[Update] New Post on my blog. Check here:
http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/
I will update now every day, at least once, perhaps twice. I had an issue with a camera battery so there has been no activity since I started the blog. That all has been fixed. Thank you all for looking, please feel free to leave comments so I know what I can do better.

They look great. I really like the basing material.

Your wash work is fab, mate.
-
Top notch painting! A pleasure to look at.
-
Your wash work is fab, mate.
Actually back home my nickname was "Brown Wash". Or just, "wash". Thanks a lot guys, the only reason I started the blog was for the feedback and you guys are making me feel super welcome here on this forum. Thanks for that!
-
I've got to ask, do you undercoat in white to make better use of washes? I've been undercoating in black just because there are SO MANY recesses and niggly bits in the Warmaster minis.
-
Stormwind: I have not used anything but white primer in probably 10 years. This is what I always say to people who ask...
1.) You start with black primer as a beginner, so that you already have your contrast built in off the get go. This makes for a darker miniature, but much easier to shade.
2.) Once you're comfortable and feel like you need a little more control over the shadows you go with gray primer. This is a good middle-of-the-line tone that still gets dark in the crevices, but a dark that isn't so overpoweringly dark.
3.) After you've decided that black and gray still don't give you the control you need you move to white primer. White primer is the hardest to deal with because you have NO shadows or contrast, this all must be done by you, the painter. Some consider black-lining, I go the wash route and then black-line if I need to really darken an area.
As far as my washes... invariably I will throw a black wash on there. So take the Liche Priest's energy vortex... I painted it green to start, then washed it black to get depth and contrast. Then I built back up using the same colors I started with all the way up to an off-white. That's how I do my washes... lay it down thick, but make sure it doesn't pool, then build back up. It's an easy way to shade but it requires a bit of finesse that just takes good honest practice.
Sound good?
-
Thanks man, I feel like less of a noob now. I've tried undercoating white my Epic eldar and Space Wolves but found the amount of "bits I missed" intolerable on the marines, made me throw down my tools in frustration. I tried some grey on my Warhammer elves, and now black on my Warmaster High Elves.
Mixing that with the new Imperial primer to fill in the gaps and I feel I am sloooowly getting the hang of things!
-
I always prime in black, and is good for me :D
-
JChaos... I didn't mean to offend if I did. Black is great! Don't get me wrong. If you want dark figures, or stark contrast then it's way better than white in my opinion.
I was merely suggesting that white I believe is sometimes the hardest to paint with on account of the fact that you get NO contrast to start, you have to be the one to create the contrast. I believe white to give a painter more control than black. You don't necessarily want black in the crevices... I mean, sometimes you want a brown or a blue or a green.... so that being said, the white allows whatever shading you want to have happen to happen, versus the black that sort of swallows up a lot of color.
Hope that helps!
Stormwind... you're not a noob, white's just hard to work with, especially with small scale.
-
No offense at all, just an opinion, and yes white is hard. I tried some units in white prime in 10mm and gives me a lot of work, and the result was not what I expected, not for using white ...but because I am not trainned enough to control this type of painting.
Anyway, the point is that your figures are superb painted! good work ;)
-
Thanks a lot JChaos... really putting a lot of time into these guys and a lot of heart, though the dead have no souls ;)
But if they did, this is what they'd look like 8)

Again, looking great - the hero on the left stands out. And the basing is nice and muted... Apart from the piles of skulls. =D Love the cavalry armour.
-
Consitantly awesome!
-
Your shading skills are unbelievable!

Thank you all for the kind words, you're what motivate me to paint! Here's some new work, moving right along with my army, unit by unit. More on the blog:

Ohhh :-[
Never realised that the Carrion showed their ribcages........ kudos to bringing those out !
-
What basing material are you using here? Mixture of sand and gravel? I've been trying the Vallejo pumice and enjoying the results so far.
-
Stormwind:
I use Woodland Scenics black ballast. What I do is buy a fine black ballast shaker and a coarse or medium black ballast shaker and mix the two together, with a little more fine then coarse, that way you get the variation in stone size.
I paint white glue on the base and then just dip the base into the mixture, blowing off any excess. Then wait for it to dry and use black paint with lots of water if any holes have formed. Finally, drybrush a brown and then a near-white and you're set! A little green ink in spots serves as good swamp.
Hope that helps!
Re: ribcage... there's just not enough to make these guys look undead, so I HAD to paint those spine sections!
-
I found that a second coat of PVA glue watered down over the top when it's dry makes it dry double hard like concrete. =)
-
Thanks Stormwind for the advice. I think I should be doing the watered-down step to really secure my gravel.
Here's a long awaited update. I'm doing work for Dave here on the forum. Here's a test strip WIP... bad photo, taken at night, but you can at least get the idea.
Here's the rest of the photos:

Wow, they look great - like you said, its hard to make out the fur differences because of the lighting on the photo, but from what I can see I'm really pleased.
You have blended the fur and the flesh well and the weapons look just right!
Cant wait to get these back with a quote and then I hope to be sending you the first serious batch.
4K is a LOT of skaven!

-
Great details, but would you really want to paint a whole skaven army in that detail? :)
-
Yes and no.
I'm not a paint snob though this might come across as such.
Personally, I got into the hobby because things were painted really well and I would literally spend hours staring at the display cabinets in the GW stores. Then I started gaming at my club and all I saw was unpainted, poorly painted or even half-assembled armies and I got majorly turned off. I didn't play a single game because the aesthetic wasn't there.
I can honestly say that I would not play a game unless the models were painted to a decent level. Sure, that level of detail there is over-the-top, but wouldn't it be amazing to see two of those such armies hammering it out on the battlefield?
It's funny you should mention a Skaven army... I just got enlisted to do a commission for one at 4k points. :o
Let the horde-building begin! It's a daunting task but if the money is there, so will be my paintbrush. ;D
-
Dont get me wrong, Id certainly like to see a skaven army painted to that level. :D
-
Me too, Guthwine, me too!
Update: Another quick shot with American dime comparison.

Look later tonight for a shot of two full stands of clan-rats.
-
Out of curiosity. And because I presume your commission is from someone frequenting this forums too......
What is the intention for basing these ? Straight forward "out of the box" or will you be "clippin and snippin" ?
-
That's actually a good question. I need to get a hold of the client before I do the bases. Right now, the stands are just lined up rats. I just need to figure out what terrain he wants the base to be ie. dirt, swamp, ice, lava, etc...
-
Hi Bryan - I paid you for that first "test unit" via paypal yesterday. Please confirm it came through o.k.
I, too, am looking forward to seeing a huge army of "museum quality" rampaging around my table! Its really going to hurt my wallet but as its spread out over a year, and as my self employed business is doing really well at the moment, it can take it.
Basing wise, I normally pva and sand, then paint a dark brown base colour, then I drybrush it with a bleached bone colour, then I add static grass/tufts. If you are happy to do a swamp theme style base along with the agreed price then that'd look good! (perhaps you could do a small example on a piece of cardboard or something first?).
There'll be some clippin and snippin! I like the units to be based as big hordes. (the full 12 figures per base, regardless of what type of troops they are). They should have a slightly irregular formation - think huddles of warriors/rat pack rather than nice neat lines of soldiers. I have clipped off the weapon teams and globadiers to make separate stands of these and will be sending these off to be painted as alternative units at the end of the project. (they'll be used as alternative clanrat units with magic banner rules etc). I like as much variety as possible on each stand (as few duplicate figures as possible) and a typical clanrat unit of 3 stands might have 1 stand without any banners, 1 stand with the flag/pennant figure and the final stand with the little iron rune standard. In this way when they're all done, what I'll do is arrange them in 3 distinct types of units - the standardless units (skavenslaves) and the other two types with standards.
I forgot to send you the warmaster plastic bases for the test unit, I'll send an extra set of 3 bases with the first big batch. I'm starting all my cleaning up of the bare metal today!
Dave
-
Dave,
Pay-pal is a go, received the money yesterday.
The fact that you consider my painting "museum quality" really makes me feel pretty awesome. See it's not about the money for me, though it's a nice afterthought. It's all about how happy I can make some people out there in the world, and just hearing that makes this all worthwhile. Thanks for that.
I've finished two stands of Skaven, though based them in neat rows... obviously I know now what to do from your post. If you like swamp better I prefer swamp! It's more interesting and it fits the dirty little rats better.
So with each batch, send me some specific instructions if you could either on the forum or a text with the package. You want some specific things done and I want to be 100% sure I get everything right for you.
Do you want me to base this test batch with swamp terrain since they're arranged in neat rows anyway? Just let me know.
-
Hi
No, that's fine. Credit where credits due, they look like the best skaven I've ever seen for warmaster and that's why I made the offer of paying you to paint my army. I'm just glad you've taken on the mission.
Yes please, if you could base them 'swamp style', then I can see what the finished army will look like that would be great. I envisaged them non uniform but if there's just one unit already based all uniform that'll be o.k. In an army this size, they'll be swamped by less standardised ranks of bretheren!
Before I send the first batch out (early next week) I'll do a painting and basing ideas sheet to include with them, for you with my suggestions/ideas for you to think about.
Dave
-
David, looks like those are Stormvermin ? correct ?? if so then that would be about the most logical choice for a "proper" unit 8)
-
Dave,
I'll have a picture up soon. The base isn't going to be anything extravagant but it will look definitely swampy :D
Lex: Those are clan-rats, as far as I know. Are storm-vermin worth the pts cost to take? I've since started my own Skaven army :-[ what am I getting myself into! 8)

Agree, on looking again (and using magnifier 8)).
On the subject of Stormvermin. IT is Skaven... (neekneek), and their strength is in the number, so points spent on them will need to be accounted for in their targets. So in true Skaven style, do not (neekneek) at ANY cost use them to fight your opponents troops, unless those are "just" basic infantry or better yet, machines !
-
I think if I was "gaming it" I would just take hundreds of clanrat and rat swarm units and back them up with jezzails and rat ogres. The stormvermin are a bit too expensive for the points cost but I'll still be taking them as they are cool figures and my general needs some bodyguards!!!!!
I am into the background of the skaven and will be taking a bit of everything!
Re the stormvermin. I think I've had a good idea: I'll be having 4 units painted up as classic, black furred, steel shod skaven and the other 4 units painted up as 'albino guard' with white fur and red lacquered armour (samurai style).
Yes, the unit I sent as a test - they're clanrat!
Dave
-
The other 4 units painted up as 'albino guard' with white fur and red lacquered armour (samurai style).
YES! I was just thinking about this as a good idea!!! That is perfect. You read my mind ;D
-
Batch number 1 of 8 for this army sent off this afternoon! I've spent hours cleaning them all up, snipping them apart and filing the bases smooth, all ready for painting. I've included all the bases this time and a spare set of bases to make up for the fact I forgot the test unit's bases!
Expect 3 clanrat, 4 ratswarm, 1 pack characters, 2 rat ogres and 2 stormvermin.
I've also sent (separately) the old warhammer codex for the skaven for you to gem up on the background.
Can't wait to see you get started on these beauties!
Dave
-
Super excited to get these bad-boys! I'm juuuuust about finished the final stand of clan-rats. It's going slow, but only because I've got other projects I'm wrapping up so that I can move onto yours. Glad you're sending the codex... I really want to read the fluff, it helps a ton.
I'll be sending out the first unit soon! Can't wait to see your reaction when you get them!

Wow, looks fab. = )
-
Vermin-tastic!
I like the swarm effect and the way the clanrat match the rat swarm colours!
Lovely - can't wait to see more!
Are you going to do some patches of static grass and/or 'reed clumps' or something on the bases, just to provide a bit of contrast to the dark basing colour? Just an idea.
Dave
-
Pretty nice job :)
I would advice you to have lighter tones for basing at this scale though.
Looking forward for more :)
-
Thanks everyone! They've been so much fun to paint! I've been getting into their fluff and really digging the Skaven of late.
As far as the contrast of the base... I was thinking about putting grass in for sure, so stay tuned for a picture. I can easily lighten the base colors... maybe you're right, everything's too dark. Personally I think that the Skaven would be dark and greasy... but I see what you mean about the scale. Will try to update soon with a different basing scheme!
-
The paint is awesome! and yeah in this scale going for bright colours enhance the figures when you see them at 50 cm high during the game.
are you thought something to differenciate the units, when they will be mass brigated during the game?
some players makes some marks in the rear of the plastic stands to know which bases belongs to the unit.
-
I like the figures being "dark and greasy" - its exactly how I imagine them too!
I actually think the base colours are fine, its just that some bright green and/or some dead grass static grass and perhaps the very odd tuft of something in a green would brighten up the base without detracting from the figures. I'll leave it entirely up to you to play and experiment. Its not always wise to try and make decisions based on photos alone!
I'm not bothered about differentiating between units really. On a practical note, if I have to, I'll put blobs of different coloured paint on the undersides of the bases to deliniate units, I don't want to spoil the visual effect with colours/numbers etc visible on the figures or base edges.
Skaven differentiate clan mates in the tunnels through smell.
( Suppose I could spray figures with different scents, that'd be interesting! :) ha! )
Dave
-
That's cool, spray them with different oddors :) nikk nikk
David, the army will be great and very very nice indeed! Good Job Thelronpainter!
-
Spectacular!!, your painting level is HUGH!!!
-
Thanks so much again for the compliments. All worth the effort with the brush.
If you smell them they smell like varnish... perhaps that's what the musk of fear smells like ;)
I left some varnish on to give them a "greasy" look.
BTW Dave got the army book, read the fluff, totally pumped to continue to do this! Also reading Skavenslayer right now too! Will most certainly add some tufts of grass to the base to break up the darkness, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

These Skaven look so real. Thats just amazing! Great work. Makes me want to start a Skaven army too :) Must resist!!!
A tiny bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism: I am not sure I like the flock on the sides of the base. Imho the side should be black and used to "frame" the miniatures. Also, the flock might be a problem when forming brigades and might even chip away.
-
Great, love the reds on the Stormvermin commander.
Can't wait to see what you do with the characters!!!
If it were me, I'd patch flock the bases all together, at the end - it'll be quicker.
It'll also be an excuse for an awesome group shot!
Glad the book arrived. The background on the Skaven is part of what attracts me to them.
Dave

Dave, if you want to see a real Stormvermin commander look here at Snik Scarslick the White!
Blog Update!
http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/ (http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/)
I swear to you this guy looks 10x better in person. I'll re-photograph him tomorrow when he's on his base. Any thoughts on what you want him to based like? Just him, with some rats at his feet? He's albino in case you couldn't tell from the photo, like I said though, way better in person.
-
But... HOW DO YOU GET TO THIS LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 10 mm?, i can not barely believe it!!!
And you say that in person is 10 times better??!! Are you meaning that if i see the miniature probably i'd like to have sex with it?, hahaha, i'm kidding of course, but i really love your painting!!
-
HOW DO YOU GET TO THIS LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 10 mm?
Truthfully, if it's sculpted on than I feel obligated to paint it. If the sculptor made the effort to sculpt something I actually feel compelled to paint it. I actually physically feel ill if I don't stay true to the sculptor's intent. I simply can't ship something like that out the door, not at least with people paying for it. But that's just me.
Thank you again and again for the compliments. You all truly don't know how much you mean to me and my craft.
-
Wow, just Wow!
If you blew that figure photo up, he'd happily pass for a 28mm Skaven figure!
I sent the characters in a few little zip lock bags with UK 2 pence coins, in little, pre prepared groups.
If you could base them together, in those clusters, on the coins, that'd be great.
From memory, He was with the standard bearer figure, so you could base them together on one coin.
Like the troop stands, I like the character stands to be quite 'busy' with 2-3 figures on each stand, plus any rats or whatever scattered around. I can't see skaven heros being on their own, they will always have toadies, body guards or slaves present.
Dave
-
That is really good work! great
-
yeah, men, I want to see all them ^_^.

I've been on a roll! Here's the Crimson Banner, straight from the pits of Skavenblight itself.

-
And he calls my Eldar ship ridiculously good. :o
wtf, on that scale that is highly impressive. Very well done!
-
Snik Scarslick will be pleased - his crimson pack banner will gain him much warpstone fealty - yes yes.
Dave
-
The paint is great. Did you consider to crop the image and enlarge it to see them in all his magnificient?
-
JChaos,
I could enlarge them, but due to the scale, it would look, to me at least, a bit splotchy, you might not even get to see the detail. I'll fiddle around with it and see what I come up with. I'm painting a ton of Skaven so you'll get all types of new photos as I work.
-
It was only a idea to show your great work!
Great for your enthusiasm,
looking forward to see more of your work
-
My apologies. Edited.
-
I think this is all very magnificent! These are certainly the finest skaven I've seen.
In an attempt to say something constructive (i.e. beyond the 'wow' that I feel) I wonder if they might not look a little dark on the tabletop and some of the detail might not pop as well as it deserves. My suggestion would be to try slightly ligher colours for the basing to give them a little contrast from a distance. Of course, these aren't for me (how I wish they were!) and it may be that lighter bases might spoil things but I'd certainly want to try it out to see.
Now, I wonder if I need my Kislev painting for me...
-
I agree with pw, this army is going to be the best skaven warmaster painted never ever, thank you for sharing with us :-)
-
I suspect that this won't be Iron Painter's last commission from this forum after my army is finished!

Blog Update!
http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/ (http://theironpainter.blogspot.com/)
Dave,
I'm still working on my own personal Undead army and I still want to do a Lizardman army and maybe even an Empire army! So lot's of stuff in the works. Another commission though would be a wonderful proposition - hint-hint-nudge-nudge out there ;D
Here are two characters... not happy with the gray seer sculpt, but I tried my best to paint it.
-
I think the badass ratogre form the character set belongs to the grey seer (as in Tanquol and Boneripper from the novels). Maybe if you add him to the seer, you will like the model more.
Great paint job, as always :)
-
The Clan Moulder figure looks awesome! Perhaps use some of the spare, single rats to clump round him?
I'll see if I've got a spare single base of rat swarm spare to send out with the next eventual batch. If you were to do this character stand a second time, in order to differentiate him from this one, perhaps you could paint up a carpet of rats on his base using the rat swarm? (I'll compensate your extra painting time by not including something else from the character pack)? Just an idea? Let me know what you think!
I agree re the grey seer - you've painted him up very nicely but he's not reallly a "blow you away" sculpt. I too, think that he will look better based on a coin if you include the rat ogre character figure with him. Perhaps a way to differentiate the same figure (character stand) in the second batch would be to swap the "special" rat ogre for a normal one (and include the special rat ogre on one of the bases of a rat ogre unit).
Looking good!!
Dave
-
If you want your second grey seer stand to look different maybe adding stormvermin bodyguards might be a good idea?
-
Just wonderful painting!, good job!.
-
Perhaps use some of the spare, single rats to clump round him?
I have no problem doing that. For the first one though I simply glued the packmaster with the two mutant clan moulders, the one with two heads and the one with the claws and spikes on his back.
I really want to do one on a carpet of rats! Great idea! I'll cut up a single rat swarm square from what you gave me. Just send me one extra rat swarm square in the next shipment.
@the rest of you guys
Thanquol had Boneripper in Skavenslayer so I will totally base the grey seer with him. What you guys see there on the blog is just the after-paint... I still have to base them all and everything. Don't worry, more pictures will come!
-
Great!
O.k. - will do!

Looks like you're very nearly there with a second unit of clanrat.
I really like the moulder command group - lovely browns.

I really like your paint jobs. ;)
The Crimson Fists and the Skavens (my two first armies when I began the hobby) are awesome!

Awesome. My friend has an army of skaven for warhammer, in 28mm and he's not done as good a job!
Can't wait to see him based together with the Grey Seer.
What's next on the painting station? Finishing off a second unit of clanrat or starting a second rat swarm?
When you've got a whole brigade of them done with a commander to lead them, thats when the look will be really amplified. Skaven are a horde army.
I'm just chuffed to be getting such a top quality job done on what is going to be my fave army!
Warmaster scale games are the only games you can represent skaven armies on really IMHO.
Dave
-
Dave,
Tonight you'll get a photo of the Grey Seer + Boneripper and another unit of clan-rats.
So I have finished one more Clan-Rat unit and a half. So I'm going to finish all the clan-rats and then move to the rat ogres and then the stormvermin, meanwhile doing characters in between. Sound good?
I'm so happy you are happy, that makes this all worthwhile. It's going to be something to have this army painted to this level. They epitomize the horde army and I agree, warmaster is the only game that makes it look like an actual army of rats and not just a cluster of them. You're paying the money but you're going to get something that is truly one-of-a-kind. It's all worth it in the end!
Anyway, more pics... stay tuned.
-
Sounds great - you do them in whatever order your 'painting muse' takes your fancy!
I look forward to seeing more piccys!
Dave :)

Stunning work, as always - I'm struggling to paint a single elf in warhammer scale here. :-X

Stormwind keep at it. My first few years of painting were terrible. I could hardly paint the broad side of a barn. This all has taken me nearly 14 years of painting to get to this level, and truly, this level is far below that of many of the European painters out there on Coolminiornot.com. Just keep practicing! You'll get it.

I buy all my washes in bulk. Believe it or not, I use Devlun Mud / Agrax Earthshade far more than Badab Black / Nuln Oil... NEVER underestimate the power of a wash. The guys back at the shop nicknamed me Brown Wash.
Does that make me less of a legitimate painter? I often wonder if other people use washes like I do. I think washes are the only way to shade / highlight sometimes, though I'm also a fan of wet blending.

And here we have a Pit Brute! This guy is huge when compared to the rat ogres. I would include him in a Skaven army as a single character with a rat packmaster whipping him and a sea of little rats underneath him. Just my 2 cents. This guy is huge, when compared of course.

The painting of the rat ogres are great. Never seen those figures at close. They have a supeb scultping.
-
Stunning work as always - I was only teasing about the washes. I think it's 100% respectable to paint with washes. It's not like you're getting a machine to do it for you!
I've mostly been using Badab Black, but I have the Devlan Mud one here I'm trying out on some Infinity bases - seems great!

That's the scary part about Skaven... their numbers are always out-distancing their supply. If they could only organize themselves to take over the world! If only... that council needs to unite the clans! Cover the Earth in greasy, stinky fur and scuttling claws!
Fantastic!

Dave, you'll be happy to know too that the photos are dark and the rat ogres turned out way better than they look in the photos :) :)

Games Workshop, but now it's been replaced with "Agrax Earthshade", with their horribly oblique new naming system.
Badab Black, which was the previous black wash is now "Nuln Oil". *Rolleyes*

I stopped using GW paint about 10yrs ago and used Reaper Pro Paints. BUT, looks like RPP is longer around either, so I'm looking for a new range to use. Army Painter is topping the list so far.
Amazingly quite a few of my RPP are still usable after being stored for 8yrs!

The new GW colors are really annoyingly titled. I also think that they give you a lot less paint than Privateer Press does.
I use primarily Vallejo paints, and also P3 paints. I have a few Warpaints and they are actually pretty damn good too. I really try to steer clear from GW paints... their packaging is not good long term and they just don't give you enough, not to mention they have an odd palette that's very GW-ish... of course.
With that said, I still think GW washes are the best on the market. Period.
Anyway, without further ado, here's the albino Warlord Ratskill the Butcher. Bad pictures... I'm sorry. Will post better ones a little later.

Happy Halloween!
Here's Lord Spinetail the Wicked! He's far from finished, in fact, this is really early on. He's going to be the first studio figure I'm going to sell on eBay. I usually don't sell my master level stuff but... well, consider it a Halloween gift to you all!

I looked at the picture and nearly dropped my coffee!!
I thought "JEEEZUS".... but then realised that the minature was 28mm scale, not a Warmaster mini.
Still a very nicely painted mini.
-
Big Red my friend I wish I could paint like this on 12mm scale, but sadly there is no room to shade and no room to highlight!
I'm posting a 28mm figure only because it's Skaven and I've been doing a Skaven commission for a while now. It'll be back to 12mm tomorrow ;)
-
Much warptoken has bought the arm of the Rotten 13, the most sinister, deceitful and cunning of all of the greater clan Stormvermin. Born white at birth with red eyes they were shunned and grew up needing to fight to stay alive. Collected from the darkest and most violent parts of Skavenblight, the Rotten 13 are a sight that would make all but the strongest of Warlords squirt the musk of fear.

These are all coming along nicely!
Do you reckon you'll have all of this first batch finished by Christmas\Festive holidays?
Dave
-
Dave,
Give me one more week, maybe a little more then a week and I'll have them all ready to be shipped. I've finally got a great system down for them without sacrificing quality so yes, expect them soon. I'm saving the rat swarms for last because they're the easiest to paint.
So I'll photograph the lot of them and then I'd prefer payment through pay-pal and then I'll send them off to you! I will pack them as carefully as I can, but as usual, I'm not responsible for any damages that may occur while in transit, and hope you understand.
These guys look way better in person, trust me. You're going to love the army. I don't want them to leave my display cabinet!!!! :P
-
These look really fab, always a pleasure to see more of them. = )
-
Sounds good, so mail permitting, I should have them for the Xmas break!
Dave
-
Dave,
I will have them done in time though I cannot control overseas shipping... I only hope that they are quick, I don't want to sacrifice any quality here on my end but I understand how special it would be to have them in time for Christmas. Here's hoping! :D

They look nice and dark and greasy! How do you do the red highlights? Just the original colour before washing?
-
I base with Vallejo Hull Red, then highlight with GW Blood Red, then re-highlight with Vallejo Carmine Red, then wash with Reikland Flesh Wash and then Highlight with Vallejo Bright Orange and then dot with white... finally washing the white with Reikland Flesh Wash.
Ha! How's that for an answer? It sounds complicated but the actual process goes really fast once you've been doing it for a while. ;D

Dave,
Breeders down here, breeding. Much rat-stink down here in the tunnels but Clan Moulder has been busy-busy making ratkin quick-quick to swell the growing tide. Numbers are growing, snik-snik, the manthings above will wash under a tide of teeth soon. All too soon now, Warlord Dave, all too soon.
A.K.A.
I received the package and need to finish two single-fig commissions before I start! Will let you know when I do.
-
No problem. Looking forward to seeing the second commission!
Dave
-
Neek neek! Less talk, more painting/photoing, man thing! :)
-
At the crack of the whip, I obey. Before you, more of the filthy scum that have been spilling out of the breeder pits.
The council is pleased with Clan Moulder. May our fires burn forever bright and may our breeders be forever fat with kin to fuel the war-furnace.

Will do!

I've just nipped home to get a bite of lunch and to have a look at the pretty pictures before heading off out to work again. They look very nice! So detailed and full of character.
Absolutely. When the whole massive, insane, awesome army is done, I will be getting it all photographed so I can share.
So far I have 8 units of clanrat, 8 units of ratswarm, 4 units of ratogres and 4 units of stormvermin and a pile of characters. The Iron Painter has 4 units each of jezzails, plaguemonks and gutterrunners that he has just started on. The next batch I am planning on sending is likely to be will be warplightning cannons, doomwheels, screaming bell and some skaven slave conversions....
Watch this space!
Dave
-
Current projects are as follows:
[EPIC] Crimson Fist Space Marine Company
[WM] Vampire Counts Army
[WM] Lizardman Army
Where is this Lizardmen Army we all have been waiting for so long?
:P
-
How many points is it going to be, in the end?
-
The skaven? Around 5K so I can field a 4K army with some options.
Neek neek

Fraggle,
Each unit of infantry is around $70.00... for this level of work. Some are less and some are a touch more, but the average is that. Thanks for the interest!
I have a pretty big wait-list right now considering the Skaven army is still in-process!
-
And worth every penny....... :)
Iron painter has 8 units of skaven slaves and all my warmachines at the moment......
Couple more batches after this and the skaven army will be completed - must be pushing 100 blisters worth of troops by the end! Good job it's taken years so I can afford it!
