Title: [WMA] Long Ago and Far Away (depending on your location)
Post by: Spectrar Ghost on August 24, 2012, 09:57:35 PM
This will be a repository for all my WMA projects. Right now I'm working on Romans and I've got the figs for Huns; both are Baccus 6mm. Any terrain I make for WMA will also go here. No pics yet, but I'll add them soon.

6mm. The fact that you had to ask is a compliment in itself. Thanks to everyone else, too - These things help me not to stall on yet another project.

How many points (units) are you planning to paint?

Roma victis!

1k each of Romans and Huns to start - that's what my opponent's have bought. Each comes out to 13 units plus command. I have the Romans mapped and priced to 5k (just over a Legion, with a scale of 1 stand/centuria), though in reality I'll probably not go beyond 2-3k. The Huns I'm playing by ear, as I'm not certain of how my 1k build will fare. I'm hopeful but not totally confident of the utility of a Skirmishing army, so I'll wait until I've gotten some play in before I expand. I have interest in Germans as an OpFor for the Romans, but they can wait for now - they got bumped by the Huns.

My first unit of cavalry, ready for basing.

Any thoughts/C&C on the horses? The only army I painted for Warmaster Fantasy was my Skaven, so this is actually the first cav unit I've painted for Warmaster (or anything else, come to think of it).

Also, while picking up more craft sticks at Micheal's, I came across these:

The medium size is almost exactly Warmaster sized (20mmx39mm to be exact), and the bag was only $2.99 for 42 mediums and a bunch of the large and small sizes. A pretty good deal, I thought.

Matt used those for his EC. You can also find 40% coupons to make them even cheaper.

Another unit of Auxilia done.

That means I have 1 Legion, 2 Auxilia, 1 Heavy Cav, and 1 Archer unit left, plus two commanders.

I think I'll properly base everything I've finished before I move on to the next unit though.

Gives a good idea of  how far I have to go. Of course it's only now I realize that one of the Archer stands is backwards in the picture...

Impressive - this scale is the only way to go with a Roman Legion!

Lovely painting with deep, realistic looking reds.
Are you going to put some static grass on the bases to brighten the bases a bit at the end?

All my Legionaries are done - 4 units worth. On to the various remaining Auxilia.

Also a look at my test strip of Huns, which turned out nicely, IMO, though the pics don't seem to agree...(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae260/Spectrar_Ghost/Warmaster%20Ancients/Huns/DSCN0650.jpg)
(http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae260/Spectrar_Ghost/Warmaster%20Ancients/Huns/DSCN0649.jpg)On the other hand my monitor seems to be showing them at something like 5 times life size, so maybe that's a factor.  ::)

These all look fantastic, you've now sold me on the idea of getting a 6mm Ancients army (well two if I'm to play). In order to seal my fate, please can I ask two questionjs:

First, would you mind sharing a step-by-step on how you painted the legionnaries?

And second, I'm wondering about putting twice as many on a base (four ranks, or perhaps three), do you think they'd all fit? (or is there a good historical reason for not doing this?)

Cheers  and thanks for the inspiration, pw.

Count number of legionairs in unit....  brigade 4 units and you have app 1 Cohort...??
Title: Re: [WMA] Long Ago and Far Away (depending on your location)
Post by: pw on September 24, 2012, 11:48:13 AM
Thanks for the suggestion Lex.

From my basic google-fu, a cohort would be six centuries (each century being of around 80). So, If I based them three strips to a stand (I think each strip has eight men on it) I'd be close to having each WM unit be a century. As I understand things (not much admittedly) WM wouldn't make this work in terms of Brigade = Cohort but I like the idea of each unit being a relatively accurate reflection of a century.

It's really a very simple scheme. This ended up being a test for the new GW paints, primarily because I wanted to make sure I could keep the colors consistent. The Legionaries only use eight colors total.

The shields and cloth are basecoated Mephiston Red. Armor, pilum tips, and shield bosses are basecoated in Leadbealcher. Boots and pilum hafts are XV-88. Skin is Cadian Fleshtone Bestigor Flesh. The furs on the officers are basecoated in Dryad Bark. Then everything gets a wash of Nuln Oil, making sure it doesn't pile up too much, particularly on the shields. Once that's dried the tops of the helmets and the shield bosses get a light drybrush back up to Leadbealcher. The top edges and the top and left side(as seen from the front) of the shields get highlighted back up to Mephiston Red. Then the bases are painted - Dryad Bark basecoat with sucessive heavy drybrushes (almost overbrusing) of Gorthor Brown and Baneblade Brown. This basing combination, by the way, is a very effective substitute for my old favored combo of Charadon Granite/Graveyard Earth/Kommando Khaki. A bit more red, but very similar.

The only new colors are for the Cav - while the dark horses are basecoated in Dryad Bark, the light brown horses are Mournfang Brown, and the white horses are Ceramit White.

They'd fit. The strips are 20mm x 5mm, with four men each. One of the nice things Baccus does is sells by the unit - for Warmaster style basing you can choose between two and four ranks deep. The link is kind of hard to find for this - I always have to do some searching. It's in the Products -> Ancient section of the site, all the way at the bottom, under 'MAGSAWMA (40mm)'

It's also important to point out that if you buy the army deals for WMA they come with units in two ranks, so if you want deeper units make sure to plan for it.

Very impressive, they look good even with the pictures blown up to this size.

Oh, and given how good your army is looking I'm withholding my decision on having more strips to a base until I've painted a few strips to see how long they take me (and before that the Warmaster Chaos army must be finished!)

More Roman Cav - the last I need for 1k.

New in progress army shots - only 2 Auxilia and an Archer unit left. Hurrah!

Interesting how much of a difference there is in the white horses between the two units - the brighter ones are what I wanted, to be clear. At least I got it right the second time.  ;)

That is an advantage, those kind of differences are great to recognize the units during the battle! (specially helpful in multiple unit combat)

Great work!

After some distraction in the form of Dropzone Commander, I finished off the second unit of archers today. That leaves two Auxilia units to go to reach 1k. No pics, I figure I'll do the final three all together. Just wanted to let people know the Romans are not forgotten...
