Title: Welcome (back)
Post by: Lex on April 14, 2009, 12:08:37 PM
Welcome (back) to the newest incarnation of the Specialist Games forums!!

Although the Forums are not officaly open yet (but we are getting there !!) I have noticed that the Grapevine is working and we see a steady flow of people registering on the forums already.

For all and sundry, these forums are intended to fill the gap when the old Specialist Games forums (suddenly) disappeared, and although Iain and Paul (from the GW side) tried hard to pull over the old forums into this new format, they have not succeeded (yet). And because we did not want to keep a vacuum, we decided to go ahead and open up these. Well, almost open them up.

Many of the old rules and restrictions will be in place, and most of the moderator force of the old forums made the transfer here. The forums themselves have some nice and nifty features that I am still finding out myself, so you are bound to see them in use over the next weeks.

So for now, get the lay of the land, and start posting (oh and yeah !!  I killed post-count features from the start on  9-)  so no need tp try and boost them with silly posts.

It is alive! It is alive!

Thank you for re-creating these wonderful forums.

I look forward to seeing more interesting posts on these forums :D ... And the less interesting posts, how are we to acknowledge the interesting posts if there are no posts that aren't interesting.

From what I heard a possibility was to make an access to all the old data in a frozen forum. Transferring it all to an active forum seemed harder then they had in mind.

That sounds like an entirely reasonable approach.

That sounds like the way it was done with the even older Specialist Games forum (the black one).

So I assume this means the old posts from the database will be moved over, or all the accounts as well?... :-\ Since that might give some interesting issues with newly registered accounts that have identical names, won't it?

At this point, it is highly unlikely that the old data will be moved across to here. Combining the two sets of data is generally more trouble than it is worth. Most likely is either that a second, frozen forum is set up for reference, so people can look back and link in to here, or that wont be possible and we will just have to use this place. However, now that this place is here you can be sure that it will stay the core set of boards, and that data wont be added or deleted from here.

Can we get back that toggle on each of the forums that allows you to hide certain ones?

No, but you should be able to use the "Show unead posts since last visit"  or "Show new replies to your posts" links to view what you want and mark the rest as "read".....

Aww that's a shame collapsible categories won't return. I only have an interest in a couple of the games so I'd find it most useful. I thought it was a default feature in SMF forums?

I have one set up and it is a option you can turn on in the Admin panel.

It's a nice feature that doesn't have any downsides so I don't know why it's been turned off here.

The user panel next to the posts on the left could do with tidying up and the colour of the font in the link tree at the top of the page needs changing.

Morning chaps.  Nice to see the SG forums are back!  Let's think of this new forum in the same misty eyed way as Kirk did in "Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home" when he discovers he's been given command of a new starship.  The USS Enterprise 1701-A.

At the bottom of every post there's a little Report to Moderator link, hit it and it will summon the spam eating fairy (aka Lex). ;)

To Lex and the other site admin, I found the link tyo this randomly on another forum I was browsing when I should be doing some actual work for uni/job applications (2:16am right now!) and was surprised, utterly and totally surprised the forums were up and around and have been for at leasta  month.

When the SG forums shut down we were given the option to re-register via email IIRC and a linka nd stuff popped up and we were told that we would be notified by email when the new forums were up. I know of at least 2 other people I've just posted this link to that were completely surprised by the fact that the SG Forums are up, whether officially released or not, and having had no notification whatsoever.

Is it possible for email notifications to be sent out to all ex-members to link them back here?

That would be greatly appreciated by everyone I imagine.

Cheers for bringing us back alive, I've missed the community.

Ram.

Ram, ^^ that was the intention, however, diverging formats have not allowed us to move the way we would have wanted, and a couple of weeks ago we decided to go ahead and bring these up anyway. There is a question outstanding at the GW-web/tech guys to hand the opt-in/opt-out adress set for the purpose you mentioned, but we have not heard from them yet.

And we did not do full PR yet, because we were still (so to speak) decorating this news house.......

Hey Lex,

Okay that sounds reasonable. My suggestion to help expand on this PR is to get Jervis Johnson to do a ramble on in Standard Bearer in the White Dwarf about what has happened et al and explain about the forums, maybe answer some of the questions that are being asked like with all the stuff that was posted being now lost to the depths of time (fortunately we had the Snotling warband and my Race thread which whilst not updated for a year or two was found in my room when I cleane dit up heh, saved as back ups). If the GW web/tech guys don't hand over the details for everyone who registered to be notified of the new forums then this is one way that will get the word out as alot of us don't use teh GW website anymore as many of the links are redundant taking you to the opening screen asking what country/language you would like to view the site from...

Anyways, the forum looks nice and has some good features so well done on getting it put back together.

Ram.

You know Standard Bearer is written somewhere between 3 to 6 months before it's published?

So? My point is still valid. I don't even bother with the GW website anymore as any old links link to the overview page and once in don't redirect you. Finding your way around to many people is icky at best so getting redirects off of say the GW Webpage isn't going to necessarily happen. Chuck up a paragrapgh in a White Dwarf or get Jervis to ramble on about stuff. Easy.

What is the purpose of this forum?

No link on the SG section in the GW website makes it no more accessible to new players than any other forum.

As far as I can see only Mordheim+warmaster communities have really returned to the forum - other games have left for their own forums (taccoms etc.) and not returned as there is no real point to it without the old posts or links from GW.

At the moment all it does is makes the games look dead as nobody is posting - whereas in fact they are just posting elsewhere

That seems to be a good idea. I wonder if Mods could ask about this from Andy / Jervis / others ex SG persons?
