We've had some questions on the proper way to do flank charges for 4cm front based units charging the flank of front 4cm based units. According to the charge rules you would take the closest stand center to center with the flank of target unit. Other bases would then be arranged around the first stand but would have no way to make base contact and thus contribute attacks. This image demonstrates this method from the historical rulebook.

Yet earlier in the rule book they demonstrate charging a flank where in you would place stands as such below:

The latter is doubly as effective than the former and makes quite a difference in weight of attacks. I would also think that the maximizing frontage rule would lean towards the second method as more stands would be in combat or as i see it in "frontage."
Thanks for the help =)

The second picture is wrong, I think. You always place the attacker centre to centre, the only exception to that rule is if you dont have enough room to place the attacking stand in the center. Which is not the case in the second graph.

The second picture is unfortunately wrong.

Remember that correct placement when you do NOT have an option to extend frontage does NOT force you to "spread" out in line! After the stand moves into contact (and thus combat) and without enemies to place the other two stands place them so you benefit from 2 support, which CAN mean one on either side, but which also could mean one to a side and the other BEHIND the centered unit.
Position should be dictated by LOS on pursuit or advance

where picture 2 come from? LBR? WMA?
It seems two stands of the flanking cav are hitting (one of them corner to corner)... that does not seems very legal

I checked, its printed wrong in the WMA rulebook. (hence the cavalry based on the long edge)

Beware of mixing up rulesets. There are sensible differences

The link above is the ones I spotted, but I am sure there are more differences that I did not notice in my cross readings.
Experience playing is with the both sets of rules is very valueable.

Thanks for the help. We usually play BoFA but there was no definitive answer in that rulebook. When that happens we go sifting through the other warmaster rulesets. Having done that it seems like Fantasy is 1.0, BoFA is 1.1 and Ancients is 1.5. How i'd kill to see a new, well done 2nd edition even at GW pricing...
