Title: What should I take to Adepticon this year?
Post by: Seahawk on February 04, 2013, 08:57:32 PM
So I'm on the fence and gathering opinions.

This year, I'll once again be attending the Adepticon Battlefleet Gothich Championships. You may remember when I won it last year by a mighty 19 points over the #2 player with my Ultramarines. People scoffed or were surprised that Space Marines, long considered a sub-par fleet, won a tournament.

Hence, it's decision time. Do I play the marines again, to show that it wasn't just a fluke? Or, do I take the chaos out and show that they can win tournaments too?

Keep in mind, my Ultramarines have as much lavish detail as I can put on them, which helped to better the score. My Chaos has...well it's seen better days. They'd have to be stripped down, cleaned up, fixed, and repainted, which would be a lot more effort. My time is crunchy at the moment, which leaves me hemmin' and hawin' over which to do. I have my lean, but wouldn't mind other opinions. ;)

I think your SM fleet was powerful, as it was pretty much a min-max list for a 1500pt SM fleet. Not to say that it was bad, but on the contrary that it was so good I see little reason to go with something else.

Adepticon is with faq 2010 IIRC?

Just take which one you want. Why let us decide?

I was certainly hoping to get to go up against your Space Marines with my Tyranids last year, so I vote you bring them back for another round!

Haha, thanks for the votes. It's not that I'm having you fine folks tell me what to play, it's simply gathering opinions. ;)

Mycen, hopefully we get paired together first round! Maybe we can convince the TO to set it up...

hehe.  Do you guys REALLY want me to be an evil bastard like that?  I've got some local friends doing some playtesting for the new scenario for this year (the other two will be slight tweaks on past scenarios) so things hsould be interesting.

It's not being evil is we both want it to happen. ;)

Hopefully this time we don't have like 6 people drop because they overslept, left their fleet at home (how does one forget that??), or simply did not show.

true.  Do note that the "transports" will not be used AS transports in all the games so they need to be escort sized this year.  For one,  they will serve ANOTHER purpose <VBEG>

Works for me, I used all regular transports and escort carriers last year; I can do so again, huzzah.

Will the paint scoring change, or can I pretty much expect the same score as what I got last year (29 fleet, 12 transports), provided I do absolutely nothing to improve it?

should function about the same. I'm not going to penalize older fleets since GW has pretty much dumped the system though it does depend on the paint judges ;)

Speaking of scenarios, I heard someone refer to some of the scenarios as "line up and die" last year? Are there going to be any repeats of things like that this year, do you know?

Hmm, I don't quite think that was the case. I had plenty of tactical maneuvering in my games, but I guess in its own way there weren't any other missions other than "Get 'em!". Perhaps a mission where the transports mean everything would be interesting. An objectives games instead of a kill game, as it were.

Ooooohhh, NOW I know why I didn't use Thunderhawk Annihilators last year. Like a cool kid, I played all fluffy and used Ultramarines-themed ships and fleet list! The Dominion fleet list doesn't have the Annihilator but the Crusade fleet list does. Hmm, I think I know a change I'll make this year...;)

While standard victory points will always stay the primary victory conditions as doing attacker/defender missions are a bit problematic in a tournament format,  one of the scenarios from this year will put an interesting twist into things.  I'm also looking through the last few years worth of scenarios for the other two we'll be using this year.   There's a high chance that one of the other ones is going to be the scavenger hunt style one from I think 2010.

No, don't ever do attacker/defender, and I never advocate it.

The difference, instead, is to have a game not necessarily based on VP, but instead on objectives. Say, holding a planet, or keeping the transports alive, or something. Something 40k-ish or WFB Watchtower-ish...or even B&G-ish.

Ok.  Got it.  I have the perfect plan now.

well.  the scenarios are designed and ready to go to the guy doing the layout and printing.  I'll do that tomorrow.  Be prepared for something different MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Great!

Any hints??  ;D

nope ;)

The only thing I can say is that the secondary objective cards from last year are not being used.  The different scenarios I'm using this year make them impractical.

Remember, don't make scenarios that dick over anything...like the one from a few years ago that saw you lose all of your ordnance if you lost a single ship that started the game in the middle of the board!

no.  I remember that scenario.  That's the scenario that made me TAKE OVER running the BFG tournament, that and the fact that the TO that year limited "named ship" upgrades to the actual named ships  in the BBB which screwed up my planned fleet for that year greatly (I think I was planning on using 3 torpedo dauntlesses when only 1 was mentioned in the BBB).  No.  the big twist is that one of the scenarios has Standard VP as the SECONDARY objective ;)

That being said.  I need advice for the ringer fleet should it be needed as I'm focusing right now on my Flames of War stuff (which has pretty much taken over almost all of what was GW game playing time).  It's either going to be Imp Navy, Chaos or Tau.  I have at least 2 of every cruiser type for Imp Navy and one of every main battleship class I think (would have to check for the Apoc) and can do most chaos fleets and I have 4000ish points of Armada Tau.  I'd love to see a Ringer fleet by committee ;)

13th black crusade list, 2x Styx 5x Devistation. Just because a ringer should piss people off and its a pretty fun list :P.

Will IA X ships be allowed as reserves this year?
Title: Re: What should I take to Adepticon this year?

per the 2013 adepticon BFG rules pdf.

Imperial Armour fleet lists are NOT allowed. Individual ships (except the High Conveyor)
from Imperial Armour 10 are allowed and take up a slot in any respective fleet for the appropriate
race they are listed for with the following clarification :

The Night Hag:
Chaos Fleet.

Nicor:
Space Marine Fleet/Battlefleet Armageddon: As it's a Grand Cruiser it will require 2 other cruisers to field.

Vanguard:
Space Marine Fleet/Battlefleet Armageddon: Freely Available
as it's just a modified Strike Cruiser.

Raptorous Rex:
Space Marine Fleet/Battlefleet Armageddon: Counts as a Battle Barge for the fleet lists. As the
rules are written in IA 10, this ship may not turn as it a Battleship class ship and is given a max speed of 10cm and cannot use Burn Retros order. Battleships have to move 15cm in order to turn. The fluff describes the ship as being as large as a space hulk. Because of this, if possible to make a house rule at this point, I was going to rule that it functions like a Space Hulk with respect to movement (IE moves 10cm forward a turn and can make a 45 degree turn every 2 movement phases).

Ok, so it's more or less the same as previous years then.

Goober, I sent you a PM about Adepticon.
