This month I started painting a High Elf army.
So far I've finished 2 units of Bolt Throwers and 4 units of Spearmen (still need to place decals on the banners of these guys yet).
High Elf Bolt Throwers

Very nicely painted High Elves- I like how clean they look.
I'll have to try and organise a game against you once you have enough units ready.
-
Very nice :)
I would suggest not to use black for the banner however ;)
-
Elves always look impressive when they're painted up nice, great stuff.
-
they look pretty good!
-
Damn your eyes for doing such an amazing job - even the bases are magnificent!
-
WoW, these elves are really amazing.
If you dont mind me asking, how long did you need to finish a single unit?
-
They look really nice, awesomeshotdude.
Dave, you've got competition for great looking Elves now!
-
Mostly the pretty high elf armies just sit around and giggle about you fugly chaos types.
-
Thanks guys :)
I'm working my way through a unit of Giant Eagles and 4 units of Archers now...
@Geep - Game on mate, for sure. Shouldn't be too much longer before I have enough High Elf units painted up for a game.
@Toon - About 2 - 3 days each unit mate...I can't sit there for a long time to paint so I do it in spurts throughout the day. Mostly at night though when the kids are all in bed...
-
I finished off the unit of Giant Eagles I had going on the side whilst I am doing the Archers. I think I'll buy another blister so I can have 2 units of these guys.

-
Great conversion on this eagles, really nice!
-
Reallly nice!
-
What colors did you use on the eagles? I put mine on hold because I couldn't get the browns I wanted.
-
Thanks guys!
@ Dave - Both paints are from Vallejo Model Colour over the top of a white undercoat. The body is Vallejo Beige Brown (70875) and the last row of feathers at the rear of the wings is Vallejo Pale Sand (70837)
-
So its been a long time since I worked on these guys, but over the last couple of weeks I've finished off painting my High Elf Archers and my alternate High Elf Swordmasters. I've almost finished some alternate High Elf White Lions too and will post some pics up of those in a couple of days.

Absolutely amazing work!

What did you use for the swordmasters
-
Absolutely amazing work!
Thanks Stormwind :)
What did you use for the swordmasters
I got Eureka in Australia here to convert his High Elf Reavers so that they had Two-Handed Swords instead of Two-Handed Axes and a smooth cloak instead of a fur cloak.
He doesn't have them up on his website, but if you emailed him I'm sure he would cast some up (I guess he still has the moulds).
-
Such clean paintjob... excellent!
-
Great painting
-
Lovely. The red works really well.
Dave
-
Yes it is really neat! great army
-
Thanks for the comments guys :)
I finished off the High Elf White Lions alternates today, as well as made a base for my High Elf Wizard, who is almost finished being painted.

[Anticipation Intensifies]

Very visually enhancing . Love the sword master convertions from eureka . Basing adds to the overall effect .
Stuart

Thanks guys :)

Well now, that is downright majestic.
-
That is a great wizard.
I like the basing and your use of red (for me is a difficult colour), details as gemstone enhance the figure a lot! well done
-
Gees , amazing !.
total effect is breathe taking .
Stuart
-
Excellent work Danny!!

Thanks guys :)
I finished painting and dipping a test High Elf Cavalry mini. It took me a while to complete as I chopped and changed my mind with colours, having to repaint over sections a couple of times before I was happy. Now I know what I want, the rest should be much quicker...
The colour horse I was aiming for is this;
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/awesomeshotdude/Warmaster/6a00e553bd675c88340120a72712a3970b-800wi1_zps98c5a9d6.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/awesomeshotdude/media/Warmaster/6a00e553bd675c88340120a72712a3970b-800wi1_zps98c5a9d6.jpg.html)
...and here is what I came up with. The dip is still wet, which is why it looks shiny, however once its dry, I will spray it with Testo's Dullcote, which will give it a nice flat look, then I will touch up a couple of bits and I think it should look pretty cool. I've also got some 10mm scale decals for shields, so they should look pretty cool.
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/awesomeshotdude/Warmaster/P1050112_zps132a50fa.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/awesomeshotdude/media/Warmaster/P1050112_zps132a50fa.jpg.html)

Very nice indeed.
can we see a picuture before the dipping?
-
Very nice indeed.
can we see a picuture before the dipping?
Thanks mate. Yeah sure, I've started on painting 15 more so when I get to the dipping stage, which will likely be this time next week, I'll take a pic just before dipping.
-
I like the black horse, don't know why I never did any.
Do you actually dip, or just paint the stuff on? Army Painter stuff?
-
Do you actually dip, or just paint the stuff on? Army Painter stuff?
Yeah mate, the Dark Tone Army Painter dip is what I use and for these High Elves, I've used the Army Painter Platemail Metal spray, which serves as both an undercoat and base coat. I then paint all the other colours over the top of that.
Whether I actually dip the miniature into the tin or not depends on the miniature. The Cavalry above were dunked fully into the tin and then I used a brush to remove any excess dip until it is at a level I liked. With the smaller single mini's though, like the alternate Swordmasters and White Lions, I simply brushed it on as a single dollop from the brush is enough to cover such a tiny miniature and dunking it in the tin seems like a waste of time and effort...you get the same results using either method...sometimes its just easier to dunk and other times its easier to brush on...
-
Very nice ! Very contrasted painting job.
-

Thanks mate :)

The test mini had dried enough for me to spray with Testors Dullcote this morning. I also added a shield decal and painted some bright blue on the gems, then finished off with another light coat of Testors Dullcote to protect that last bit of paint and the decal.

...and the other 15 are well on their way to the dipping stage.

Wonderfull ! How will you prepare the bases ?
-
Never used the dipping stage , effects are quite remarkable , possibly saving time on shading .
Cool .
Stuart

can we see a picuture before the dipping?
A before and after shot as requested - and then the third pic is of a (different) mini after having the Matt Varnish sprayed on;

Wonderfull ! How will you prepare the bases ?
I still haven't decided on how I will base these guys yet. I use my 10mm for different gaming systems, so try to cater for all systems as best I can. At the moment I am leaning towards basing them 4 to a base on the wide edge and not 4 to a base on the short edge like is usual for Warmaster...not sure yet.
I'll just glue these guys to the bases and then paint the bases brown and apply the Vallejo Brown Earth mixture, drybrush with Vallejo Beige and then flock.
-
...and I've finished dipping the other 15 Cavalry. Just need to let them dry now before spraying with Testors Dullcote and painting light blue on the gems and adding shield decals.

Really interesting pictures, and really nice paint!
-
Thanks for the pics , simple but outstanding process .
I think i'll give it ago .
Not painted in a long time . So should be a relaxing change .
Stuart

Thanks guys :)
Tonight I finished off the second High Elf Wizard I was working on.

Nice water/wind effect
-
The wizard looks great! (like very thing else :) )
Could it be that you painted the scarfs on the silver helms' helmets (by accident) in metallic colors?
-
ooh very nice .
-
Yeah, really nice. I like your contrasts very much, as said. Go on in that way.
-
Thanks guys :)
Could it be that you painted the scarfs on the silver helms' helmets (by accident) in metallic colors?
Yes mate, you're absolutely right. I actually thought it was a metal part of the helmet, so deliberately didn't paint it red, however after you brought it to my attention I had a closer look and now realise it is part of the scarf. So I have now painted it red and it looks better. Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)
-
I finished off painting these guys today and got them glued to their bases. I'll finish of the basing tomorrow. Pretty happy with how they've turned out, and I fixed the cloth sashes around the helmets (thanks Toon :) ).

Absolutely brilliant, but you've glued them the wrong way round on the bases! D=
-
Absolutely brilliant, but you've glued them the wrong way round on the bases! D=
Thanks mate :)
In regards to the basing. I deliberately glued them like that, as I mentioned in the quote below, I play several different systems. For Warmaster, this isn't the best (or correct) method, however it can still work if you play casually with friends and family like I do and are prepared to work with it.
Wonderfull ! How will you prepare the bases ?

-
Which rulesets do you paly?
-
Oh thank goodness, I thought you had honestly glued them that way by mistake!
Are you inclined to share the file you use to print off your transfers?
-
will look absolutely fabulous when bases finished regardless of how you base them .
I echo the thought what other rules do people use ?.
Stuart
-
Thanks guys!
The systems I play other than Warmaster is GW War of The Ring, which I love, and I have very recently started playing Kings of War, which is a good game if you want a quick easy game, like I sometimes do.
So I finished the basing on the High Elf Cavalry. I'm starting on finishing off the Mounted Hero, Mounted Standard Bearer and Standard Bearer on Foot that I dipped a couple of days ago. Once they are done, I can then start on my Hero on Dragon conversion.

Cracking jobs!
Interesting, our group too has evolved our choice of rule sets to include playing Kings of War (slightly modified) with our 10mm Warmaster armies too. It is a much faster game than original Warmaster and has a somewhat "chess like" feel.
Me, I still prefer the original Warmaster, but several of our players are fed up of some of the quirks of original Warmaster.
Dave
-
Are you inclined to share the file you use to print off your transfers?
Sorry I missed this earlier mate.
The transfers are waterslide decals from Vendi Vidi Vici. The 10mm scale ones from the Knights Mythical Creatures set

Thanks mate.
I like all three games I play, all for different reasons. Kings of War certainly has the attraction of being quick and easy with almost no need to ever refer to the rulebook...the rules are so easy but work very well. However sometimes you want something with a bit more meat :)
-
Oh wow, those transfers look great, good choice!
-
Really nice job, and thanks for the transfer link, i may take some one day or the other.
-
Thanks guys.
This morning I finished off the Mounted Hero, Mounted BSB and BSB on Foot. Pretty happy with how they've turned out.
I've only got a Hero on Dragon to do now and this Army is finished. I'll start on that tonight.

Painting is still great, of course, and basing is really nice too.
I think your flags are a little bit too monochromatic.
-
Super finishing touches to your army . Dragon hero should be an eye opener . Wwell done .
Stuart
-
its been a while since I logged in and I just saw your thread!
exellent painting and a great looking army you have got there!
I would love to see a group shot of the whole force as it stands now!
-
Beautiful stuff!
Quite jealous of how crisp all your stuff is!
-
Looks great!
-
I love those characters. Are the snakes decals of are they each hand-painted?
-

The snakes are decals mate :)
I've finished the Hero on Dragon, I'm just waiting for some bases to arrive before I can finish off basing him.

great classic dragon. -You have made a great job with the raider. Is the dragon from Ral Partha?
-
Really nice. I like them very much. What do you plan to use as base ?
-
Looks absolutely fabulous, man.
-
Thanks guys :)
Is the dragon from Ral Partha?
The Dragon is from Dark Sword Miniatures. Sculpted by Dennis Mize. Below is the link;
It looks so good painted black I nearly painted mine in black, however I kind of wanted to keep a bit of a red theme across my army.
http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop/index.php/miniatures/visions-in-fantasy/black-dragon.html
What do you plan to use as base ?
The base is a 80mm long by 40mm wide x 2mm thick laser cut black acrylic piece.
I finished off basing the High Elf Dragon Rider and two Treemen this arvo.
The High Elf Hero on Dragon and the two Treemen are the last of the High Elf army. The Treemen won't be used in the High Elf army when I play Warmaster, however they will be used when I play Kings of War and War of The Ring. Also, I plan to do a Wood Elf army in the future and the Treemen will be used in that army when I play Warmaster.
When I get a chance to get the entire army out, I'll take some army pics and post them up to finish this diary off.

-
Stunning! What army list will you use for Wood Elves?
-
Superb treemen , brilliant over all effect .
stuart
-
Yes, terrible ! I love those treemen !
-
That dragon is flat brill, and the elves so smooth! Very much enjoying it all.
Been creeping this forum for a while now, but I'll note you've inspired me to pick up some of the Eureka reavers a little while back.
-
Really nice. Especially the dragon. Assuming the rider is 10mm, then that range looks good for WM.
-
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I've been meaning to take this pic for a while. Can't see much detail because I had to hold the camera far enough back to get the entire Army in. Also, I still have to finish putting the decals on the Spearmen's shields but I'm engrossed with starting on an Orc Army now so will have to get back to the decals at a later stage.

Wonderful to see them all together!
-
Great view! 8)
-
Stunning and well finished .
Stuart
-
Really nice. The two handed sword looks a little bit too tall now. Maybe you will want to replace them with Swordmasters one day.
-
Thanks guys :)
-
Congratulation for your project!
-
Wonderful, cohesive and clear look. Congratulations!
-
Very nice - a lovely labour of love there!
Dave
-
Would you mind posting which brand/color paints you used to get those HE to look so vibrant and detailed? I thought you posted it however seem to be failing to find where.
Thanks!!

No problems mate.
All the High Elves (Except for the Dragon, Treants and Eagles) were all sprayed with the Army Painter Platemail Metal spray, which served as both the undercoat and base coat. I then picked out the rest of the details with a brush before dipping the miniatures with Army Painter Dark Tone dip and spraying them with Testor's Dullcote after the dip dried.
For the colours that I brushed on, they were all from the Vallejo Model Color range and the red colour was Vermillion (70909).
