Two things to clarify: First: I like my models unique. Second - I tend to scratchbuild every single thing I can to achieve this uniqueness ;), well, I DO have a large Corsair Eldar fleet made entirely of official models, but I intend to change that at some point in the future...
And here comes BFG - I've built some fleets by now and decided to show them to the world ;)
Here are my Dark Eldar. On temporary bases here, as they're bit too small. Or even a lot too small in case of Mortalis. I'll get them proper bases in time, though.
There's one Mortalis, 3 Tortures and 16 escorts. 12 of them are Subjugations, usually in torpedo variant, other 4 were originally built to be Corsairs, but turned out too small and now usually serve as Battery Subjugations.
I do plan to build some Corsairs and Succubi at one point, though.
And the second project, not mine but for a friend who wanted to start playing BFG. He wanted Tau fleet and he wanted them cheap. And so, Budget Tau Fleet was born. Seeing that I made them the cheapest way I could, I think they turned out quite ok ;)

3 Explorers, 2 Protectors, Hero, Emissary, 9 Orcas, 2 Messengers. There's a Custiodian in plans. As you can see, we redesigned them a bit to be something in between GW and FW Tau, going for more cohesive looking fleet.
Currently, I'm putting finishing touches on my scratchbuilt Orks [that one was easy], while simultaneously working on Nids [classic.] and Adeptus Mechanicus [this one was harder, especially considering the fact I decided to mangetize everything...]
See you soon with more ;)
-
Wow those are ace!
-
Very well done in construction and painting
-
Thanks. 've been working on Orks recently, should share them soon.
-
Holy crap, Khar!
-
I'm loving your work Khar. I can't wait to see your Ork ships!
-
Yeah, I'd love to see you take on some Ork building.
-
So this is what you do when not drawing. ;)
Great work. You need to give some on info on how you did those Tau.
-
Ya those Tau are pretty slick, I will also be impatiently awaiting your Orks :P.
-
Great stuff, those look terrific.
-
They look excellent.
Some of those Dark Eldar ships look as if they're made from Hellion Skyboards (bottom left), while others (top left, top right, bottom right) look like they include... shields? I've got some old Dark Elf shields, but they look slightly different.
What are the tau ships made from?
-
beautiful models good sir kudos to you for your hard work!
-
Consider the recent events in the BFG market, would you be up for making a tutorial on how to make those Tau ships?

yea They really look sweet and you can totally tell them apart.
-
Thanks guys!
Ha. Now I see my purpose clearly, and In a few days I'll give you some precise tutorials how to make any ship I've tried yet. I fear we might need this sort of thing soon.
-
much appreciated! keep at it with the hard work

Thanks guys!

Haha, this and all other things considered GW actions is good for creative actions.
-
First tutorial [Explorer and Orca] is on its way! Stay tuned, folks!
-
Wow amazing creation.

So. It has finally happened. Official model supply is more or less gone, we have to make do with what we have. Therefore, I present first two tutorials from planned series ‘Let’s build some ships’. I’m your techpriest Khar and I’ll guide you through the world of scratchbuilding ;).
I’ve found necessary pictures on ebay, at the same time checking if all the needs stuff is readily available.
First of all, we’ll start with something simple. Orca class Tau escort. What you will need, is one complete 40k Gun Drone [some parts of it will be needed for the other ships!]
, a bit of plasticard and 3 40k Tau Fire Warrior grenade containers [these come just as cheap as it can possibly get on Ebay. Buy a whole lot, as most of my Tau designs use them. Such a simple part, such possibilities…]
That’s all you need to make an Orca. Here’s how.
1: Take both drone pulse carbines. Glue them together like that [the red part requires cutting off]:
2: Take a drone body. Cut it in half like this. Keep the other half [you’ll use it later, I promise…] You can use either half here, to add some variation among your ships.
3: Combine both elements. Like this.
4: Now, what you need is adding some details. First of all – glue in the grenades, so it looks like that.
5:Next, cut some geometric shapes from plasticard and glue them to the prow. Some round sprue fragments may also help.
6: Congratulations, you’ve got yourself an Orca ;)
Next episode: Explorer! [Actually, I've text already written, I just need to do some diagrams on cutting plasticard ;)]
-
They rock!
Thank you so much for that tutorial. So simple, yet so effective.
-
Holt crap! I think you just won me over (and I don't even like the Tau)
also your paint job is fracking amazing! Even if your scratch builds were only half as good as they are they'd look great with those jobs you've done.
someone go cross post this link to DakkaDakka and Warseer.
-
These are just great - once you mention the parts you used you can start to see little bits and pieces here an there!
Hats off to you - these are ingenious.
-
These are great. Already working up a buy list to replicate and definitely looking forward to seeing how you did the others.
-
Just one problem with scratchbuilding fleets from GW bits - do people really want to give money to GW after what they have done to Specialist Games?! I know I sure as hell don't want to. Will go with alternative ranges myself which will work as well as scractch builds, and likely to be much cheaper in time and money also.
Not to take anything away from the modelling and painting which is great of course... ;)
-
And thanks again, guys. You're really good for my motivation :D
PST - Wait a few days for the rest of instructions, you'd need some more Tau parts for full fleet ;) Be sure to share finished ships though...
Markcons - you know, I did have this dillema... And currently, I'm doing what I can to find non-GW parts for everything I do. Sadly, GW bits often give best results, and even though I despise what this company has now become, I accept that sometimes I'll be forced to still buy their product. But hey, I've reduced my GW spending at least 95% in last year and I surely hope that few bits every now and then will not in any way slow their downfall... :D
[I do have plan for Explorer mk2, this time without a single GW part used ;)]
-
For 40k bits 2nd hand stuff is ideal. On a local forum there are many sales for example so I could aquire many bits. I have for example bought enough Tyranid guns for 3 euro's to build me at least 600pts of a Vanguard fleet. It needs some clay to better them, but hey, 3 euro :)

Hey Khar, man I love your work. Your Tau tutorial was top notch consider it “Lootedâ€. I know you’re taking care of Me Boyz with your work on BFG:R, but I’m still itching to see your Ork ships. I’ve been a patient Git, but even a ol Blood Axe can only wait so long…………………….. Please show us Da goods!
-
Rhââââââ lovely Tau BFg ship ....
-
Wow, these are really great.
Thanks for sharing the instructions. Will there be more coming?
-
For those of us wishing to scratch build, could you post some pictures of these ships on 1mm squared paper? I've always liked the look of Tau...
-
Sorry for lack of activity here, and prolonged lack of Tau building instructions...
I have something else, though. I have truly Orky way of looking at my creations. As in, they're in constant need of change and upgrade. Therefore, I rebuilt and repainted my Orks. And finally made some proper pictures of them...
That's how they look now:
First escort squadron. Lotsa extra details and new, better paint job. And new bases for everyone!
And the rest of escorts.
First Kill Kroozer. You see, never liked original Ork ship design. They looked like someone planned them. That's not propa. My ships are meant to look like their hulls were built from plates ripped straight from the surface of fallen forgeworld, and then properly orkified. Full random build, with three constant things: Teef at the front, engines in the back, guns all over the place.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-segVO1urTCk/Ul1kwhFb5HI/AAAAAAAAAUk/blFS77xG5qM/s1600/kill2.jpg)second Kill
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vX-t95c_jU4/Ul1kxA7b4sI/AAAAAAAAAUo/KjEPftqJj6c/s1600/kill3.jpg)
Third Kill.
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xriPdQ-kcrA/Ul1kxCIDXZI/AAAAAAAAAUs/r0QWyopCU-c/s1600/kill4.jpg) and fourth Kill.
Now on to Terrors. I made ordnance markers for all of them, converthing suitable fighter models. Yeah, i actually orkified tiny fighters. no two are the same now. :D
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iZEqHKDxv2U/Ul1kxuVszWI/AAAAAAAAAU0/Mgp9BMNZH1k/s1600/terror1.jpg)
First Terror. Al of them have launch bays clearly visible from the top to avoid any mistakes in game.
And a second one.
Third one.
And the last Terror.
Battleship didn't survive redesign process, but I'll probably build a new one at some point. :D
-
Looks like they're covered in blood and it ain't even dry yet! :D
-
That's a lot of blood!
how did you do the fighters by the way?
-
That's a lot of blood!
If orks want to paint something red, they WILL find the way. :D
Fighters are from brigade models. Great resource for BFG. I added tiny bits of plasticard and wire to make them a bit less regular and symmetrical.
