Well, with this unfortunate demise of Specialist Games models from the GW line, starting next year I will have a very clear set of "proxy models" rules for the BFG tournament so we can start branching out from the official models as there is no real reason to defend GW's models at this point. My intention is going to be to hash this out with the local Chicagoland crew by September/October at the latest. I will also be taking input here.

Huzzah! ;D

WELL more power to us then as gamers! also get back to me about that caimpagn map I sent you

Ok. Having seen those GZG Islamic Federation ships that look like they can fit as Necron ships, here is the first rule I'm going to put in for Adepticon 2014 at this point.
Proxy Ship Rule 1: If you use non GW ships or converted ships (mainly tyranids for the converted ships) on the flying stand base you MUST have what ship class the ship represents clearly visible.
-
I plan on attending Adepticon in 2014.
I would say a key rule would be to enforce a standard base size (or at least a range w/ a min/max per class). And scale of the models is another important thing.
As for specifics, I think you should wait it out a little and see if a common consensus if reached on what are suitable proxies over the next few months.

Hi,
Base size has always been standard:
1-9 hits: small base
10+ hits: large base

Yes, but using proxies they may or may not have GW flying bases and the actual physical size can be different, which can make a possible difference, especially over several turns.

Let me know. I will make you some stands.

As I said, this is just the first rule. Of course things will continue to get hashed out more. We're not even a month past adepticon at this point. I'm thinking we'll wait until Draxtar Games opens up in Batavia to get things rolling more.

What does this actually mean? Must it be obvious from the model? Or must the models be obviously different enough from themselves that you can tell them apart and you have must be able to inform your opponents of their class?
-
more like little label or marking saying "scythe" or "kraken, claws" or something like that.
-
At the very least you should have cruiser, destroyer, or battleships.
-
The size should say that.
If you have names on the base, you could just give your opponent a roster with names linked to classes

I've been meaning to ask about this. Just as well...
I'm a few bases short and was wondering; what are the exact specifications for the bases? Is it like 25 mm/40 mm?
-
You got it KILLFRENZY! KILLFRENZY! KILLFRENZY!, ahem sorry...
All ships with one or two shields and less than twelve hits 25mm. All ships with 3 or more shields and/or twelve or more hits 40mm.
-
Ahh, so a little drilling and pinning, and they can work on normal GW plastic bases then? :D Awesome!

Sorry, but that's wrong.
Small GW flight stands are officially 30mm, more like 32mm in reality.
Big GW flight stands are 60mm.

I've been running local BFG tourneys so I am interested in what people come up with for a good way to proxy. Labels, although most likely not looking very nice, is all I can come up with unless its a very limited fleet selection. When I run a necron fleet I normally use one battleship, three cruisers and one lite cruiser so large, medium small would be easy to keep track of for anyone. If I am running an imperial fleet it will become a huge pain as every cruiser is different.

GW still sells flying stands in the supplies section. Oddly enough, they FINALLY now sell the small bases with small flight stands (no, I'm totally NOT resentful for buying a big bagfull years ago that I've barely gone through...), although for some crazy reason they sell the large bases with the long flight stands. Anyhow.
If you're looking for exact sizes:
Small Flying Base: 1.25" diameter
Large Flying Base: 6cm diameter
I'm pretty sure the large bases were done in metric, the smaller stands done in inches. If you try measuring the smaller ones across their diameter in cm, you get a really ugly number, same goes for doing the larger ones in inches. Yay for consistency! Go figure.
