First unit of my Middenland host is painted. To my surprise, bases proved to be the most challenging part of the 10mm miniatures :o

That Reikland guard seems fantastic!
-
Very well done
-
Sick painting !
With so many great painters around I feel like I better ditch all my efforts and start selling off..... there is NO way that I can find time and skills to get to this level...
-
Stunning work! And yes fiddling with basing has been a big pain for me as well. =-<
-
Great stuff. Were they dipped or washed? And yes, getting paint on the basing material and NOT the models is a pain. You can try some fluid retarder in there, to keep the paint wet and give you enough time to mop up a mistake after it happens. That assumes you know you did it though...
-
Excellent painting. The inking has worked really well!
Basing is a pain - but at this scale it can make the difference between a stand looking just ok and looking good.
I don't worry too much about the odd splash of brown on the feet/lower legs of models. It just looks like mud and no one can see it unless they pick up the models to examine them anyway.

Thanks for comments :)
First two units of halberiers & hero. I am quite happy with the colour scheme. I wanted to paint Averland army initially, but yellow color was just pain :P

Hi, the look great! ;)
One question, Brown inking or dipping with army painter? I used ink for my high elves with highlights, but I think for my next army will try army painter dipping
-
Yellow is one of the most difficult colours. I think you make a succeed going for middenland instead averland!
Very nice
-
Army dip is great for larger figures but for 10mm I think it makes the figures too dark. I stick with brown ink.
That's just my taste anyway - you may want to do a "test pilot" unit?
Dave

I tried Citadel wash at the first time, but the result was not very good. This is Quickshade (strong tone), but applied with a brush, which I believe makes a big difference to dipping.

An update after a long while. Wish I had more time for painting :P
Group of Empire heroes. They keep matching with the rest of the army, I've just decided for more distinctive colour scheme for the (fire) wizard.

Very nice work! I love the Empire wizard models!

You are aware that I run a small company taking on commission work right? ;D
@Paboook, your models looks great, I find that good basing really finishes off the miniatures in WM. Basing and Coherency are the most important aspects of painting WM I think.
-
My figures are not about "sick painting". The technique is very simple. Like Tzigane says, basing and coherency is the key. I would just add "simple and distinctive colour scheme" to those two as well :)
-
A little bit bigger update this time. My Middenheim detachment finally starts to look like a small army! :)
Sorry for the quality of some pictures, the light has been quite poor these days.

Really nice work. =)

I have a friend just starting empire army. I will show you those as very nice examples of what can be done with this army.
-
Lovely Steam tank!
-
Awesome! :)
-
Very nice. I like the crisp contrasts on the detailing. Keep up the good work!
-
Thanks :) I have decided to give more attention to banners than before, as the seem to be the only part of 10mm models distinct during a game :)

Seriously Lex, washes are your best friend for WM. Simply paint base colour on the area you want and hit it with a wash! Hey Presto! a great looking army. :)
-
Very nice! This might just inspire me to do the next phase of my budding Empire army - all the warmachines!

What washes do you recommend? In the past I've used a green ink for orc flesh (looked OK) and a brown ink for shadowing/darkening "cloth" but that looked very "heavy". The photos of the Empire units upthread, have they been washed? Is there a generic wash that can be brushed over any colour?
As you can tell, I'm a bit of a wash virgin!

As I've mentioned somewhere above, I use Armypainter Quickshade (strong tone) applied with a brush. I paint every strip of figures separately and work on the the bases after the miniatures are finished.
-
Paboook, do you mean the large tin or the 18ml dropper bottle of ink?
Looking on the Armypainter website, the large tin seems to be turps based?
Presumably using the 18ml ink lets you simply wash the brush in water?
Edit: Ordered a couple of the 18ml ink bottles online, fingers crossed it works OK :). If my figures end up looking half as good as Paboook's I'll be a very happy bunny!
-

I use the large tin. I didn't have any idea about the small bottle until now actually :) But I guess your miniatures will look great anyway.
-
The wash was waiting on the mat when I got in this evening.
Whoaaa but it's good stuff, it completely transforms a base of figures, nicely toning down the primary colours and adding shading at the same time. Gives a more realistic "battlefield" look.
I doubt my camera is up to showing the difference but I'm extremely impressed, top tip! ;D
-
My basic army is almost finished. This time I post few small conversions. I have find that banners are the only clearly visible objects on Warmaster battlefield and thus deserve some diversity. Especially as I have decided to use banners even in my crossbowmen regiments. Fortunately, they can be quite easily modified via cutting the banner symbols and simple green-stuffing. These are some examples of converted knight and infantry banners.

-
That's a very nice idea! I might try something like that, myself!
-
You are completely right!
Good work! that will be certainly a personal touch to your army beside will be very helpfull when playing
-
Good idea. That halberdier banner must have taken a fair bit of effort!
-
I find this little bit (a 40k Dark Eldar Raider Banner) excellent for WM pennants:
I used it for the High Elves, and have turned to it for the EA Knights and MoW ships.

-
Nice idea, Dave. How do you attach the plastic banner? By pinning?
-
I just cut the pennant parts off of the banner, filed the edge so it had a concave curve to it and then glued it.
-
http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/high-elf-dragon-prince-lance-banner-p-7045.html
I've got a bunch of these leftover. I think I could cut off the end of them and they'd look good on some silver helms.
-
Nice tips. Using such plastic banners should be easier than sculpting it by myself. I had to put a pin to the metal banners to have some support for green-stuff, and it wasn't very handy.
-
I am working on bases for these guys. The crossbowmen are the last units I need to field full painted Empire army for +- 1200 points.
Here are few pictures of converted banners for the crossbowmen (and one unit of halberdiers) step by step. I have desided to stay with my old method, as it gives you lot of options. Hope this could be helpful for others as well.
1) Cut of the halberdiers surrounding command group.
2) An easy way how to make banners different is to reshape the symbol on banner pole.
3) Use some pinning for areas that will need support.
4) Use green stuff to cover cuts and sculpt tails around the pins. Finished!
-
Looking good, nice army in white and blue. Looking forward to see your great paints on the banners!
-
Really nice stuff!
-
The xbows are finished! You will probably notice there are more miniatures on the bases - 12 instead of 8. It isn't very economic, but I think it looks great. And it makes sense as xbows have 3 attacks as well as halbediers ;)
The pictures are little bit dark because the weather is cloudy.

And both units together.

-
And last but not least, second unit of knights.
-
Wow they look good!
I could never put so many figures on one base though, I'd never be able to paint them all haha.
-
Thanks :)
I'm just an amateur. I paint them individually and glue them on the bases when finished 8)
-
I do like those Knights.
-
Good work! very very nice
-
Middenland army so far (and still growing, I need to polish bases to add another two units of halbedierds):
-
Very impressive work! Niiice ^_^
-
This is turning in to a very smart army. =)
-
Very nice. You have managed to make a striking and bright colour scheme without making it garish.
Well done - that's hard to do!
Dave
-
Wow lovely army!
Is that a medium grit sand on the bases?
Time of Madness
-
Great army! very neat and colourfull all together. Congrat
-
Thank you!

Yes. At least that's what it's called in my language :)
-
As I think I said before, I really like the crisp lines on this army. Thanks for the ongoing show!
-
Very inspiring!
-
Thank you guys! With the base army finished I have decided to relax and make few objectives for the game. Hope to post some pictures soon.
-
Some casualty counters and objectives as promised ;)

-
Nice, are those various artillery extras and a Bret tent?
-
Yes, you have keen eyes :) It's the Bretonnian tent & spare empire and dwarf artillery barrels and cannon balls.
-
Neat!
I was thinking of doing very similar things with the Pendraken Crates / Barrels stuff. =)
-
As a matter of fact, I had no place for the barrels and ball piles on the bases of my cannons. I was happy to squeeze three soldiers on each base. So the whole objectives idea came from spare pieces without any use.
-
Two units of halberdiers to boost the forces of Middenland. I've painted them some time ago, but forget to show pictures ;)

Looking great, good work!
-
I reallly like the banner with the K skull K.
Great painting
-
I recon it's K skull F :D for Karl Franz
-
Ahh yes, Didn't realize! cool
-
Very nice painting, as always
-

Aldhick is right :) The letter is more visible from the other side of the flag.

Few additions to the army of Middenland. Slowly yet still growing :)
Messengers for special scenarios (slightly converted pistoliers with pistols cut off)

Lovely painting and a really nice board - particularly like the messengers.
-
messangers are superb!
-
Your army looks very impressing, Paboook! Thanks a lot for sharing the pictures with us.
-
That's a superbly painted army and a very nice gamingtable too! Thumbs up!
-
Really great stuff, mate. =)
-
Lovely works
-
I love the painting job and the messengers idea.
How will you use them ?
-
Too much praise I am afraid! :P
I love the painting job and the messengers idea.
How will you use them ?
The messengers are for multiplayer games. You are not allowed to speak about tactics etc. with your allies after the start of the game - you can communicate only by written messages which need to be delivered from general to general (the messengers move after commanders). We used the same system in our Napoleonic wargames and it works really great :)
-
Great idea!
-
That is a super cute idea, I love it!
-
Cool :D
