Is awefully thin in the middle, Im assumin thats going to be bulked out with weapons? Other than that its a nice shape so far and looks like it will be pretty cool when detailed. Is that based off Grim Darks SC?

Yes sir this is based off the grimdark strike cruiser. The middle will be bulked out, i'll be doing removeable panels that can be cast seperately that way i can design aircraft hangar bays as well. I made this slightly bigger then a normal frigate but smaller then the light cruiser, it comes in at 62mm.

Cast separately.
that makes me happy to hear :)

Got an update, this thing has taken a lot more fiddly work fitting the weapon batteries in then i expected. The extra effort will pay off as everything will fit flush but i'm taking serious time making it just right. Last stuff i need to add is a flying bridge, some detail on the belly, and the carrier bays.

C&C very much requested, ideas on anything i can add if inspiration hits you let me know.

There needs to be something in the flat area next to the thrusters on the back I think. Maybe another engine nacelle, some technology gubbins, or even a 2mm plastic strip laid down as a brace going horizontally. I really like the weapons batteries, mate. Much better than the ones from GDB.
-
Looking nice man. You're inspiring me to quit slacking on my frigate build. Keep up the momentum.

I see what your saying about that flat spot, I'm thinking about just leaving it the way it is though front and back. Thanks seems like the weapon batteries are a hit with this.

I follow mangoz builds love them wish i had that kind of skill, your build inspired me to just go for it though. I'd like to see yours finished, perhaps we can do an exchange of our work at some point...

Looking good!

Looks great

Love where you're going with this!

Quick update, i finished the carrier sides. I'm not sure if i will do a lance turret side yet. Still tons of detail to finish on the ship as well as the flying bridge behind the rear turret.

Looks awesome!
-
The weapons look great, not so much with the bays tho. The transition from prow to bay and back to the engines is very abrupt and imo would look much sleeker with more of the arrowhead shape of the Chaos bays. Something like 2-3 smaller "bay doors" set along a long slope from the front to about 3/4 of the length of the bay and then just a single "bay door" on that rear 1/4 and angled back in towards the hull. I would probably hold off on lance sides, there are not any escorts with p/s lances. Of course a heavy raider with 1 p/f and 1 f/s lance would be pretty wicked...
-
Added some ribbing to the back part of the ship. Thoughts? good/bad?

Your sentiment has been echoed i will be working on a different launch craft bay for this beast.

Okay long delayed update, i ripped apart the rear of the ship and redid the whole thing. C&C is welcome, i also have flat spots over the arched windows on either side, i was thinking that space could go for unit emblems on them so was thinking about leaving them blank. Any ideas?

Okay so i have hit a creative block and i need some help on what to do next for this build. I added structure down the front of the prow for ramming, but thats about all i can think of to do. Well not true i have thought of maybe putting some wings on the top front with a skull or an aquila. I did want to kind of make this miniature generic to avoid grandma wendy issues. So i'm coming here to you guys for help on what i can do just a couple small things i'm thinking, or just cast as is and make conversion prows like a big ass cannon prow and torp tubes prow also.

Are you looking for what to do specifically with the prow or in general with the rest of the ship?
For the prow, it looks pretty good! Maybe some miniature "crenelations" along the edges of the superstructure, or even point-defence turrets like the weapons chaos cruisers have there.
For the rest of the ship, the dorsal spine is very bare, as is the ventral spine. Add stuffs :P
Your efforts make me want to try sculpting prows despite the fact that I'm really bad at it!

Yes sir some idea's on what i can do with the prow. As i am not entirely sure where exactly the ventral and dorsal spines are I'm not entirely sure where you mean. If you are referring to the long stick in the middle of the ship that piece is left bare on purpose i will be adding swappable side panels for different weapon configurations. If you mean something else entirely please try and explain where exactly so i can get a better idea of what your referring too. Thanks for your response i appreciate your help and insights!
Blind-
P.S. I say go for sculpting a prow, I thought i was really bad but this is making me change my mind a little. Not trying to talk myself up at all but i am proud of how far this project has come along. I was in your position a good couple months ago myself.
-
Referring to the long flat section, yes, but not to their sides. I'm referring specifically to their top and bottom edge. If you look at an Imperial cruiser, you'll see the top has an overhanging edge with a bunch of detailing work. Basically like the roof of a long cathedral structure, or crenelations. The underside suffers similarly, but that tends to have more flat strips than points. I have no idea if I'm making any sense. Pick up your nearest imperial cruiser and look at the bits above and below the weapon modules ^^
As for the prow, yeah; I'd say go with some of those tiny little guns, maybe some slight accenting on the prow shape - a raised edge all the way around?
I've also noticed chaos cruisers have teeth shapes along the underside of the prow, but I suspect you'd want to avoid those and go for a more Imperial look? Even then, the underside could do with some additional detailing... Supporting "columns" perhaps?

I added some stuff in the slots you where talking about, it's not much but it's something. Also this ship is small it isn't the size of a cruiser to warrant those little cannons everywhere, it's 60mm long which is in between a frigate and a dauntless light cruiser.

It's looking great! I love the detail work around the bridge and engineering, and the gun batteries fit well.
If I were to add anything, it would maybe be some support braces along the flat decks of the rear portion, and maybe the prow.
...Then again, the flat trapezoidal shapes are also very "Space Fleet"-looking (a friend of mine used his old Tyrants as BFG Dauntlesses; they were about the same size, and had that stubby wing feel to them), and as an alternative you could gently engrave some shallow armor plating seams into those flat areas. Going down instead of up in adding detailwork would leave the ship looking sleek instead of cluttered, and could easily get filled in if it turns out badly.

Aye, that's looking better!
Perhaps an extra two engines on the outer edges of the rear face?
I echo the stuff about some braces/supports on the flat areas, both fore and aft.
Perhaps a radio mast or two?

An admech cruiser? Looks like a ship's spine, looks about the right height for imperial, and the gap between the two batteries would make it admech, or just a funky imperial ship?
I absolutely love the spine above the engines. As for recent changes, the small turrets around the bridge have done wonders.
I have a question about the new launch bays - will you have the openings in the front/rear facing bits, in the side, or in all three?
Also, I kinda want one of there, despite not actually having a marine fleet. Hum.
-
Good guess, that is the center of a cruiser, i started work on recently. Funky pre heresy cruiser?
I too like the spine myself it will be a major feature of this current fleet of ships i am working on.
The new launch bays will open facing straight out.
I will be casting these up.
Got another quick update, just finished the prototype lance battery.

And this is the artwork i did that i am working off of. The rear of the ship isn't completely but i would like to have a catholic style church as the rear section that is missing.

Make the barrels on that lance battery longer; you know you want to ;D
-
Eyeballing it, that's going to be a pretty hefty cruiser (assuming those sockets are sized to fit standard imperial batteries), with enough mass to either be a grand cruiser or a battleship or something in a similar mass range.
I like the turret as-is. Most of the BFG turrets are relatively stubby, but given the scale they're still pretty huge with plenty of barrel length. It's mostly a matter of aesthetics and whether it looks good on the turret.

Those sockets dont fit the standard weapon pieces, the ones i custom made are considerably smaller, that piece is about 3cm in length.

I don't own any of the official BFG miniatures, but coming off this list.

This ship comes in at 62mm between, a frigate and a dauntless light cruiser. This is why i call it a heavy frigate.

You see, even more confusion now!
But erm, do you also have pictures of your 'old crap', very curious to see how you've developed as a scratchbuilder!
Are you planning on casting this ship?

Epic FTW my man!
Really digging that Ork tank! I wonder how you would do Ork BFG ships, I tried to do one a couple of years ago here (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=wip&thread=507). It's just that I really don't like the black iron goldfish models GW had produced, they lacked a certain nastiness to Ork ships I think they would need.

Buy styrofoam, build one Hulk, about twenty Roks out of it and done for a maximum of 20 euro's. ;)
The marine vessel is coming along well by the way.

I'm still waiting for a Space Hulk that is purely made up from ships, or is a gigantic battleship itself, rather than a a giant asteroid with hulls glued on it. 8)
-
And here we are, the completed Typhoon class strike frigate.
The Typhoon class strike frigate comes in three variants, annihilator, dominator, and subduer. The annihilator class is considered very powerful for a vessel it's size as it is one of the smallest ships to mount lance turrets on it's sides. The dominator use's it's speed to move in on target ship, and then fire's massed broadside's and moves quickly out of range before the target can react completely and bring their own guns to bare. While the most underestimated variant the subduer is one of the most versatile, carrying fifteen squadrons of fury void fighters, and fifteen squadrons of starhawk void bombers, the subduer can project it's lethal force in many places at once. The Typhoon's have seen service in every segmentum and every battlefleet, they even took part in the siege of holy Terra during the great heresy. Few forge worlds have the STC information necessary to manufacture this ancient ship design, it's rare to see more then a squadron of these ships together at any one time. More often they are broken into single ships used to quell small rebellions in backwater solar systems. Most notable engagements would be two annihilator class Typhoons, the Fury of light, and the Blessed hammer surprising the chaos cruiser Whispers of Intent. The battle lasted two hours, surprise was complete and the Whisper of Intent was completely gutted and only one of it's three escort ships escaping. The Blessed hammer had suffered major damage but was successfully repaired after six months in dry dock.

Hey,
looks good.
Some tips:
Highlight the edges some more. Make the ship more 'pop'.
Make the lightning more striking. the white is good, but could be thinner. Use some thinned icy blue colour along the edges.
But otherwise good colour selection and nicely executed on your own great vessels!

AVE DOMINUS NOX!
Looking good man! I'm not 100% sure on those red turrets and such, kind of reminds me of the 2nd edition era of 40k in which GW seemed to love to paint the weapons red. ;D

Hey,
due me winning GC13 I got some of these vessels kindly offered by blindhorizon. Here are some comparison shots with the forgeworld strike cruiser and the games workshop strike cruiser.

Blind Horizon's vessel is clearly to big to be a mere frigate! We are talking a vessel that is from tip to end 1mm longer then the FW version. Where the FW one has most mass at the back, blind's vessel is more balanced between prow and back.
I think they are identical.
So he build a ship that in my opinion should get stats that are equivalent to a strike cruiser. But that is something for general discussion.
Bit on the casting quality: it is his first ship and I must say I am impressed. The pieces fit with ease and flash wise it is not worse or better then what I got from Forgeworld. The most brittle piece appears to be the top engine, but that was also the case with the Emissaries from FW.

Wow, Horizon first off i must say thank you so much for the critique and pictures. It should be known that i just recently became the owner of some BFG ships, i purchased 2 imperial cruisers from games workshop so i had an idea of the scale of what i needed to work with to do a cruiser. I said frigate because i was going off of the size between the dauntless light and the frigates from a regular imperial navy fleet. I really had no idea i was within 1mm (which is impressive) of a strike cruiser.
I'm glad the quality of the cast is upto the standards of FW, that is a big bonus for what i have learned from the resin addict forums. http://www.resinaddict.com/forum/index.php plug for a fantastic community. The top engine was cast wrong, that was a product of my inexperience casting as this is my first cast. I actually created a new body mold and fixed all of the engine issues. I will be using the new hulls for my production mold, all detail will be preserved in the new mold. I will also be reworking the nose of the ship to add more detail and fix some lines issues. At one point i was ready to start casting it to see how it would turn out, and now i want to make changes for the better.
Again thanks for your critique.

I`m another happy owner of the new frigate.
I agree with Horizon. The quality of the cast is awesome and I've nothing more to say but congratulate Blindhorizon.

Ununsual painting job. I like it.
Maybe one thing. You used the same colour for lights on the front and reactors on back.

Thanks!

I agree with Marell- unusual colours, though well done. I imagine they stand out excellently against a black space background.

Cool! I hadn't noticed you got them done, looks good!
