Title: [MoW] Swabbing the Poop Deck...
Post by: Dave on July 27, 2013, 12:12:36 PM
Not too much Man O' War here, any interest in pics?

This is the Man O' War Empire fleet that I started a year ago. I've finally got all the ships and bases to the point where I can paint them all at the same time (important as I regularly paint things at different times that are slightly different from one another).

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iCDddNrfyBg/UfMDYz_ui0I/AAAAAAAANSU/4D4ATCS0clc/s640/IMG_0044.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iCDddNrfyBg/UfMDYz_ui0I/AAAAAAAANSU/4D4ATCS0clc/s1600/IMG_0044.JPG)

These Ironfist conversions were the biggest hold up (specifically, not being motivated to make them). I took the mortar end from the regular Ironfist, cut it off, and glued it on to the oar end of a metal Wargalley. It bothered me that the Ironfist had the same stats as the Wargalley but looked so different/didn't have oars.

I've got a heap of Man O' War fleets but have never found a willing opponent. Good to see someone's doing something with the game still!

What are the bases made from?

Plasticard, and the waves are sculpted with wood putty. I put them on metal washers so they can slide around a bit easier on the board.

Thanks guys. I got some base coating done this week. The bases are blue, although I think I need to do a second coat on a few of them. My plan is to paint them something close to the Dreadfleet scheme, I started with Necron Abyss.

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DUOAqQqhzwU/UgRG1Q466uI/AAAAAAAANUA/8H4-kY8mC4I/s640/IMG_0048.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DUOAqQqhzwU/UgRG1Q466uI/AAAAAAAANUA/8H4-kY8mC4I/s1600/IMG_0048.JPG)

The ships I hit with Mechrite Red, and then washed with Devlan Mud. This also showcases my crazy plan to keep my fingers off the ships as I paint them. I drilled some holes in a 1" square piece of balsa and mounted the ships on nails. I did something similar for the masts as well, gluing them to plasticard (and then that to cardboard as the plasticard was too flimsy).

When I was a kid I had the MoW catalogue and would pore over all the models imagining battles.

But I was billy no mates so it all remained a dream. :-<

MOW is my favourite GW game for years.

There is a large group of fan you can join at TheSeaOfClaw yahoo group here : http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/theseaofclaws/

Our blog is here : http://theseaofclaws.blog.fr/

And mine here (in french) : http://manowarfr.blog.fr/

I would like to translate everything i put on my french blog on the international one but it takes so much time...

As for your fleet, i really like the colours you have chosen. MOW is an old game and too frequently we see models looking like the ships we had in the GW rules or magazines... Blue, red, green... Painting job has evolved since 1993, and it's a good thing to see those old ship with decent modern ideas. Really !

I'm not fond of basing the ships, but loads of players do. Easier to pick the figs on the table they say.

About the Hellhammers, there had been two versions. The first one did not had oars, but the second one did. The models where only available through mail order if i remember well.

Picked up a dwarf fleet years ago but never found anyone who played

Work continues on the Empire ships. The red is nearly done, I just have to finish three more Wargalleys and then do the highlights. After that I start in on the black and try not to mess up the red...

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBFqFbRZxyY/UipkCmffwWI/AAAAAAAANgs/Y7cgLSFosGE/s640/IMG_0055.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBFqFbRZxyY/UipkCmffwWI/AAAAAAAANgs/Y7cgLSFosGE/s1600/IMG_0055.JPG)

I've taken one Wolfship a couple steps further. Here's what I'm planning on doing with the red for the rest, and the stern has the black highlighting done as well.

(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QsnTmTYdWyU/UipkDlBnNZI/AAAAAAAANg0/KbNtAv_txdQ/s640/IMG_0056.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QsnTmTYdWyU/UipkDlBnNZI/AAAAAAAANg0/KbNtAv_txdQ/s1600/IMG_0056.JPG)

I forgot that I need to put the pennant poles on the top of the masts, so I'll have to go back and do that before I start painting them. I was planning on doing them the same as the decks.

And then finally will come the bases. Still hoping to have these done by the end of the month.

Really really nice. Your fleet will be very consequent with so many figs.

I do council you to study too the sail problem. If you just take the sails proposed by GW, you will have nice sails from the front... And ugly white paper from behind.

With that quality of painting, it would be a shame ! At least, wash them with a cream paint. Before you set the sails on the yards. After that, you will be able to glue the yards on the masts, and the masts on the ship.

I really council you do do that this way, better than gluing the masts and then the yards.

One day, I hope to have a Man o War game for the first time with such pieces!

Thanks guys.

I do council you to study too the sail problem.

I ended up scanning the sails and printing them out (double sided!) on some canvas paper. The canvas gives a good texture to them. I'm going to have to touch up the edges with paint but otherwise that's it. They should look good from any angle.

These ships look awesome, especially the highlights on the black what color(s) are you using for that? I would like to see how that canvas paper comes out as well.

They're Army Painter Matt Black, with Uniform Gray edge highlights and Ash Gray top edge highlights. They're pretty close to the old Chaos Black, Codex Gray and Fortress Gray.

Canvas paper is a nice idea ! I long to have pictures of your sails. I'm sure it will make a huge difference.

We really lack recent painting job on MOW. It's an old game and all the figs are usually pretty ugly. All mines are painted in the hold heavy metal style... Uniform colors. No highlights, etc.

Remember this thread? I came back to these as a painting tangent for this weekend, after glueing some pennants on my Man O' War Empire fleet last week I put down the base coats and washes on each.

The colors are different enough to keep the squadrons separate, I'd like to add decals at somepoint but tracking down The Armory decals I'm after isn't easy for cheap.

Nice work. Any plans to vary the sails and make them distinguishable for the game?

I think the pennants on the mast-tops are used for that

Yep, six different color combos for the six squadrons, plus the order of the patterns differentiate each ship in the squadron.

What's it like to have simple pennants? Mine are covered in unicorns and boars, and there are so, so many...

The men of the Empire's fleet are simple. If it's not red, we ram it. Things with flowery symbols on them we ram twice.
