Title: Scenery: Fields and Stone Walls, do you use them?
Post by: Stormwind on September 03, 2013, 10:20:37 PM
Do you guys use stone falls to break up the battlefield or do you find it just clutters things up?

You need "Clutter" but to represent it in such a way that it does not obstruct play/placement

What I mean is - Warmaster is an abstract game where the units you have could literally represent just 30 high elf spearmen, or 300 or 3000.  A couple of buildings that would barely be a hamlet actually represent a town etc.

So stone walls could lower movement for cavalry and infantry and force a blockage against chariots.  But do work, mechanically in a battlefield?  I ask as I've not noticed them in many battlereports.

There is not enough walls, hedge, or other linear features like ditches, dikes rivers etc. on most tables.
The footprint of a linear feature is far larger than the actual room it takes on the table. Remember that eg. cav charging a unit behind a ditch or a hedgerow loose there bonusses.

So yes, they do work!

pur table typically looks a lot more crowded than most in the battle reports. If anything i suspect we tend to place to many terrain features. Shifting any infantry (esp archers) from a defended position is an absolute bitch that can seriously turn any battle.
