Title: Space ship miniatures for miniature line.
Post by: Blindhorizon on October 08, 2013, 06:48:29 AM
Hi all, I wanted to share some space ships I'm in the process of having concepts done for as well as 3d modeling done. This should be available very soon within a month or two. I have been working on a space ship game of my own devising with it's own back story and factions. There are three major factions right now, two human the Earth Alliance high tech fighter support and advanced shields. The other human faction is the Free Worlds Republic, they are located on the fringe and have older ships, they can't sustain high tech like the EA so they depend on good old armor plates for their defense. They press into service old freighters with armor and weapons to defend their territory. The last faction is the Slyth, a reptilian race that attacks for the love of war and aggression, they enslave and steal and use any tech that will be beneficial to them. Many a species is already enslaved or long extinct from Slyth attacks. Their ships use a high tech base, with deflector shields, this gives the shields a chance to stay up when they absorb damage. The Slyth ships are rather fragile once their shields are down.

Slyth, Reaver class cruiser.

Begging concepts for a Slyth Ordnance sized void fighter.

This is an almost completed 3d image of an EA destroyer(type yet to be determined). I may be removing the small rows of turrets, undecided of that yet though.

C&C welcome, including idea's for ships or changes mayhaps.

Thanks,

Are you planing on modeling them? cause the look prety dam hard to replicate.
Really nice designs anyway.
The void fighter looks great for eldar.  ;)

Yeah these will be modeled, the void fighter will be modeled as ordnance for space combat games. I'm not sure if i will do a epic scale version as I don't know how much interest there would be in it and it costs around $300 to get it cast.

Hmm, maybe put the first Epic version on Shapeways or something like that. From there you can see if enough people want it. As soon as you sold a bunch, it can determine whether it's worthwhile to cast it.

The Slyth Reaver class cruiser was sent to a 3d designer a couple days ago i should have a printed copy within a month. The ship is not finalized though, i was thinking about adding some turrets to the top of the ship does anyone have a comment on this? Perhaps i should leave it as is an imply it has weaponry?

Comments requested.

Thanks,

Yes small eldar style weapon pods dotting the front would be great. It really helps to make the ship look like a ship and give it a sense of scale.

I was thinking 1 big one on each top, front, middle, and top back. Then you say maybe a couple on the front to either side of the big one?

So for some time i have been working on this cruiser project. I'd like to see what interest lies in this. The video in the link is a space ship i have been working on, as the title says it is cruiser size and on the gaming board will come in at 8.5cm in length. The square gun nozels in the middle of the ship have been replaced by an atenna cluster.

I would like to know what kind of interest their is in people buying some of these ships, the reason being is to print this in FUD it will cost $50, plus probably another $30-$45 in silicone. I have investd already, $180 upto this point. Now FUD is good and all, but it has striations still and stepping, i would need to either let the detail stay marred or try and sand it away possibly damaging the master. My other option is to print in the new wax that shapeways offers, the print quality is amazing and their should be little to know print mistakes. To print in wax though will cost $150. So if there is enough interest i would like to print this in wax, and if enough interest comes about i would like to do escorts, aircraft, and even a battleship sized miniature.

Hey,

on the model itself: the rectangular block on the lower half looks out of place to me. It comes across: we have a large surface and something needs to break it up. Some carved line work would look better on the lower half I think. Not sure if that is possible though.

And on buying: always hard to predict. But at least one for me.

Have you placed this on other websites as well?

I agree it does look out of place. I have posted it on taccoms also, i don't really go on other forums to be honest.

Long time wait for this to be completed. I had to do some final changes to the render and then splurged on a FUD print. Small print lines are visable with a really up close inspeciton, but i am very happy with the results. I've still not mastered the split mould technique.

You finally did it! Awesome!

My main concern at the moment is the ship's lack of detail, making the model look as if it's more meant for 6mm scale or even as some sort of drone/aircraft for 28mm scaled games.

What recommendations would you make to make it look more to scale?

Tricky thing is that you're supposed to make the models look as if they are gigantic. The way GW has done that for their ship designs is to cover them in all sorts of tiny details, with only the largest of weapons visible.

You basically need to add tons of details throughout the models, the red part in the middle of your ship would for example be an interesting spot to add more details, as would the bottom of the craft be. I mean, take a look at the Eldar Void Stalker (http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/d/d6/BFGVoidStalker.jpg), it has certain parts which are flat (mainly the prow), but the rest is all covered in detailing. That way the ship looks truly vast, it looks like a gigantic craft.

Actually...

If it are models for a new game then the issue of scale is non-existent as in a new game all things can be designed from point zero.
So these ships do not need to be gigantic and look as such simply because this game is in a diferent scale.

Ofcourse with all we know we somehow expect these ships to be in a sense of scale with BFG, FSA, Full Thrust or on the other end with X-Wing.
And when you want to have those people as customers as well then bringing them in scale is more wanted.

As you designed the vessel now, which I like but it seems a tad bulkier then on your sketches, it is closer to the FSA audience then the BFG audience.
Large flat areas is something free hand painters like as well. :)

I agree I think if it was shrunk 5% it wouldn't feel so big next to other miniatures. The option to use bits in converting this thing opens a lot of possibilities, I think the turrets give away the actual scale of the model pretty good though.
