Started a new little project. Also meant for printing, but this time something for the Imperials to shoot at...
It's still very WIP. Need to figure something out for the guns pointing forwards. But once ready this could function as a Kill Kroozer.
-
I likes it, the Shaks are close to me heart, looks like good livin space there. Me thinking I’m gonna have to check out 3d programs, it’s got to beat cutting my fingers and killing my eyes. At any rate I really like what you’re building there my only input might be to add so things at off angles. Everything is horizontal or vertical and if you want to sell it to some of Da Boys you’re going to need some 45s and odd shapes as it appeals to our eyes. Speaking of which, you mentioned you built it for something for Imperials to shoot at? Fly in my space with yer fancy ships and we’z be using yer ships fer scrap and ridding your women folk into battle!

Now with some teeth and more stuff on it. The left side (minus front head) is almost done. The right side will get a similar threatment, but it will also be where the forward pointing weapons are mounted on.
-
I've beefed the teeth up slightly, added some 'wounds' to the ship's hull, and removed some of the larger shacks. I need to rethink the shacks a bit, I like the concept too much to just drop it, but after putting the model next to the human ships I made, it seems a bit odd...
-
Da Shacks give the ship a lot of character, like barnacles on a whale!!
-
That is very much the feel I'm having about the ship as well. The only problem is that they look out of scale, considering that the ship is supposed to be several kilometers long...
-
This is the aesthetic I always imagined would be best for Orks! At all scales, and something sadly lost on the new 28mm Orks. =-<

Hmm.... well then in stead of shacks those would be shanty TOWNS clinging to the side !! Just make the "windows" less obvious ?

The roofs are indeed inspired by the old school Ork aesthetic, kinda a tribute to the old Mega Gargant (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111011053508/warhammer40k/images/2/23/Imperator_Titan_vs_Ork_Mega-Gargant.jpg).

So that each block/shack would be an entire town? Might be an idea, it's a shame I'm a bit limited by how small I can make the details...
-
Don't worry about the scale being wrong on such things - for me GW stuff always has the wrong scale. The gargants and titans were always not quite right.
-
This thing looks pretty sweet! I would like to have some, and smaller and larger of the same style as well.
-
Barnacles on a whale, now you’re talking Lex! I love the shaks, there is just something that feels Ork to me about them. You know I had the same scale issue, and I still scratch me head and wrestle with them. I just have to not only leave them, but build more. After all where you gonna store all dem Grots. When I look at the windows on the shaks it would kill the scale for me too, but then I’d imagine a race track in side, or a small hive with a great central window and it fit. Or as Lex said think Shanty Towns. Perhaps make less windows, so it is not so obvious. Just wait until you see my “Munga Fish†It has a ton of Shak Towns. Keep going Malika you’re inspiring me to build and giving me ideas to loot!
-
Well, plan is to have this fellow printed, I'm very curious to see if you'd be able to convert it! ;D
Actually in all honesty, your ships have really inspired me to look at at the Orks again. I tried building some a couple of years ago (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/34/scratchbuilt-ork-fleet-battlefleet-gothic), but gave up on them.
-
Right on, motivating each other to keep going, to outdo, out paint or whatever is part of the beauty of this hobby. I look at some of the masters and think “I’ll never get that goodâ€, but you know I get a little better with every hour I spend engaged in this hobby. If this project makes it to print I’d probably end up buying one. I usually convert everything I touch ( “kant helps me self, da Boss makes me do it!â€), but at the rate your going it may get left alone and just painted. I think the project is coming along nicely. I’m glad I helped give you some juice to re-visit Orks. It’s funny I remember seeing your posts from a few years ago and found it really inspiring. Those posts are part of the catalyst that got me building ships in the first place. I’m curious did that project ever see paint?
-
Sadly enough that project died a very unglorious death. When I had to move out some friends helped me pack, my girlfriend at the time basically found two boxes, one filled with tons of other bits (insides of radios, pens, lighters, metal pieces, etc.). The other box was filled with these ships, and also my "2.0" scratchbuilding, which included a new generation of Ork ships (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/507/scrapyard-fleet), an Ork like warbike (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/180/scrapyard?page=2) (proportions were totally off) and a robot (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/154/last-mezzan).
Instead of realizing these were my projects, she just assumed they were random garbage and threw the boxes away. No wonder that relationship didn't work out! ;D
Luckily enough my 'Nurgle-esque' titan (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/107/plague-machines?page=3) survived. That, together with the 2.0 generation Ork ship and robot and definitely stuff I'd like to revisit again.

I've been working on the ship some more and I'm running into a major problem: costs.
I did a test run on Shapeways, not actually printing the model, just uploading it to see how much it would cost. At the moment I'm at $45, and that doesn't include the mark-up, furthermore, the model is far from finished.
For a ship the size of an Ork Kroozer, this is simply too expensive. I tried putting the model in a pack of two, or even three, but then it lowers to around $40 a model. I've been trying to hollow it out, but that's a rather complex task, considering the shape of the ship.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how I could lower the price?
-
Are the "sides" indentical ?? if they are, make them NOT so, then split the ship into a left side and a right side (which should help a lot in hollowing them!!) AND mirror the layout over the axis and you should have printable halves that allow 4 configurations ::) (if I did all the math correctly
-
The ship isn't symmetrical, the left is very different from the right. The right side is also very flat at the moment, can't hollow it out without making the model unprintable.
-
Two points to make and elucidate here having made plenty of models myself:
1. 3d printing is based on a combination of convenience and quality, not price point.
2. Look into resin casting on the actual items for sale. Use #1 as an essential step in mastering for #2.
Splitting the ship down the middle axial is a great idea regardless. It'll reduce #1, better enable #2 for all those bits and details. And easily allow for future additions/variations. Being a model it's easy to mirror the two parts to make 4 variations off the bat right now like Lex points out.
If you don't want the hassle of going down the casting route then don't worry then. Do your best to not make the thing super expensive but if it is, then so be it. It's better than NO SHIPS. :D
-
So just a cut through the middle through the entire length of the ship? That's very doable! I might even try that out with the older ships I made, could reduce the price greatly!
-
It'll certainly make it easier to hollow out that way :)
People that are not a rank amateur like myself though probably have tons of awesome, less obvious suggestions. Hit Todderman, E&C, and BerserkMonkey up over at TacComs for advice. They realllllly know their sh!t. The ResinAddict Forums are great place to glean knowledge of resin work as well.
-
Back to the Orky like ships! I've shortened the ship, replaced the engines, tweaked it like crazy!
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/WIP07_zpsa9d0f925.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/WIP07_zpsa9d0f925.jpg.html)

The ship is 4cm long, making it an escort of a sorts. I'm testing a little bit with hollowing it out to see if that's even possible. A lot of the details are super small, I wonder if they'll be that visible, I guess this means I'll be doing a few more test prints soon.
Looking at the bigger picture, I can see these ships as raiders of a sorts, not sure yet how I would explain their shape and everything. They would make a nice thing for the Legion ships to fight against...
-
And like always, paint um red to make um go fazter.
-
Almost done!

Some final details need to be added to the head and engines, then I need to keep on scraping tiny bits off it to make it look more wear and tear.
I would love to do some test prints soon to see how the details will look, a lot of it is very small, meaning it might be totally visible.
The more I look at this ship, the less I'm inclined to sell it through Shapeways. I might put it up there in the beginning, just to make it available, but in the end I just want to print this fellow property and see it cast. These make nice little buggers for the Legion ships (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/post/36613/thread) to shoot at!
@Horizon: is red rust also ok?
-
Placed the model next to a Legion ship to give it a sense of scale. Ideally the ship would have been 50% smaller, but as a model that simply wouldn't work. But for the artwork that might not pose such a problem. The picture posted here has the ships in 'model sizes', not 'artwork scale'.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/AttackingtheLegion_zpsf3b75d25.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/AttackingtheLegion_zpsf3b75d25.jpg.html)
I'll consider this ship done for now. I've tried hollowing it out, but it's impossible because the model is such a mess on the inside, trying to add multiple of them in a single .stl file has failed as well because the file would become too big.
At the moment it's too costly to sell them individually through Shapeways, printing costs alone are around €20 per ship, too expensive for a mere escort ship.
Plan now is to make a new version of the ship, make it hollow and multipart (separate head, main hull and a few weapon systems), and then see if I can get it printed at a better place after which I'll try to have it cast.
-
Just started on version 2.0. As you can see the design has changed somewhat. The head has been replaced for an array of weapons. To also link it a bit more to the rest of the setting I've also included some Legion ship styled guns in the mix.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Raider001_zps88150d73.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/Raider001_zps88150d73.jpg.html)
It's still a very early WIP, most of the body still needs to be added, more weapons, etc. Not sure yet what will happen with the previous version of the ship, but the plan is to have 3-5 variants of this little fellow which could then be printed and cast. Since the models are quite small (3.5 - 4 cm long max) I'm tempted to keep them single piece. It wouldn't be too hard to cut them up and mix the components together.
But first I'd need to get this fellow finished...
-
Another step closer...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Raider002_zpsdce47548.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/Raider002_zpsdce47548.jpg.html)
I've added some extra guns (still not enough!), as well as a torpedo launcher on the top, kinda like how certain submarines have it I guess. Now it's adding more details and such to it. At the moment the ship lacks any 'damaged' parts like the previous one had. I might look into that a bit, would love to make some of its interiors more visible.
-
Still not enough guns...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Raider003_zps68a649f9.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/Raider003_zps68a649f9.jpg.html)
-
Don't they look cute together?
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/Sidebyside_zps6f2f2f6b.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/Sidebyside_zps6f2f2f6b.jpg.html)
Note that they're both still WIP, the one in the background almost done, the other one need a bit more work.
The main challenge will be how to cast these things once they're printed, seems like quite a nightmare to do so. Any tips regarding that?
-
The cruiser looks badass, my only issues with it are, 1 the two guns on the lower jaw are too uniform, different sizes or different guns altogether. Or add another different gun to one side of the jaw. 2, the side guns look like they need to be shortened quite a bit to cast properly. Nice stuff keep up the good work.
-
They ships have been shrunk, meaning they're escorts now rather than cruisers. 4cm long.
I agree with you about the guns on the lower jaw, as you can notice they appear throughout the ship, meaning I will most likely replace a few for other guns.
As for the side guns, I was thinking of perhaps adding more bulk to the ship do that they won't stick out so much. Do note that the barrels are around 2-3mm long.
Thing is that I'm pondering whether to continue with these or discard them and start all over again, it all depends on their castability.
-
After some thinking I quickly put this together:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/ModularRaider001_zps5ab965da.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/ModularRaider001_zps5ab965da.jpg.html)
As you can see an early WIP of scrapyard ship, version 3.0. Already keeping in mind the casting process, there should be no undercuts or anything in this model.
Furthermore...
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/ModularRaider002_zpsde348ed1.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/ModularRaider002_zpsde348ed1.jpg.html)
It's modular! The way I see it at the moment is that the ship will consist of three main component parts: prow, bulk, and thrusters. Then these main components are also split in smaller parts. As you can see the bulk has separate sides. I'm planning on making a few variants of those side components, thereby allowing you various types of weaponsystems aboard. Also keep in mind that each side component has a left and right version.
Ok, back to work!
-
Cheap way of increasing the number of iterations - where things have mirrored left and right panels that have rotational symmetry (circular/square/rectangular etc), allow the pieces to "fit" when rotated and reversed. That way your one design has four iterations (right way up, upside down, opposite side right way up, opposite side upside down). This should help to maximise patter-breaking with minimum additional parts. With this system, two different side panels per "thing" to be represented will allow (assuming rectangle) 64 combinations (if I've done my maths right - no guarantees).
-
This stuff is awesome. Keep it up!
-
In the meanwhile, I've been continuing to work on the ship's hull. The more I look at it, the more I'm getting flashbacks to my old city designs I used to do, but perhaps that's not such an odd idea. At this scale I would imagine these ships to be gigantic shantytowns of a sorts.
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/ModularRaider003_zpscc7ec9ee.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/ModularRaider003_zpscc7ec9ee.jpg.html)
-
looking good, I like the new ship with all of da guns.......... The side by side shot is sweet.
-
Thank dude!
Here's a small update:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/ModularRaider004_zpsc1f74012.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/ModularRaider004_zpsc1f74012.jpg.html)
I've added a looted engine from a Legion ship. Thing is that I originally designed this with the idea of it being a looted thruster engine thing, a shrunk version of it eventually appeared on my Legion escorts...
Keep in mind that the thrusters will still need a lot of work to match the rest of the ship.
-
In the meantime I've continued working on the scrapyard ship:
(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/ModularRaider005_zpsbf14e0df.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/ModularRaider005_zpsbf14e0df.jpg.html)
The basic shape is ready I think, currently the model is around 43mm long. Still pondering if I should resize it to around 50-60mm. Now all I need to do is add the details to match the bulk and side panels, and fix those parts that Shapeways believes to be 'too thin to print'.
-
With all the weapons and such the ship stands at around 49mm long, slightly bigger than an escort, not big enough to be a cruiser. I tried stretching the model a bit to make it about 75mm long, which gives it this amazing battleship look, would make a great cruiser (after a lot of modifications), so that might be in the pipelines as well.
The idea behind these ships is that they're made of scrap, but are constantly morphing, evolving, and assimilating, it's also why I want the Legion turret on the front, it's basically a part the ship incorporated into itself after destroying a Legion cruiser.
Background is slowly starting to sort of flesh itself out. I imagine this Terramorph faction to have carved its own little empire. The Terramorphs have assimilated all mater around them, incorporating it onto their own bodies, ships, etc. But they're running out of new matter and technologies, which is why they've started attacking Legion outposts, assimilating new technologies onto their existing bodies.
It's basically Transformers meets the Borg, meets Orky technology, meets Tetsuo the Iron Man, and a bit of undead in there...
A game could easily be set up, a few Legion cruisers and escorts against a group of these raiders and perhaps some variants.
-
I've been adding more details to the prow, I think it's almost finished, just a few tiny tweaks and then its ready. After that it's adding detail to the back of the ship, and finishing up the details on the rest of the hull. Shouldn't be too hard I think.

-
By the way, here an update on the Orky like ships, check the prow weapon variant on the bottom ship. Note that it's still WIP:

-
In the meantime I've been playing a bit with the image of the ships. That, and I've been fixing some tiny thin wall parts here and there:

-
Very nice, your making me want to get down with sketch up. I sit at me desk straining me eyes and cutting me fingers slowly moving forward with me builds. I keep thinking about your digital builds and scratching me nugget thinking I really need to play with that medium. Nice work...........
-
SketchUp is really easy to use, but you will run into limitations at a certain point. Also, printing is quite expensive at the moment, so keep that in mind.
In the meantime we've been discussing the background (http://trollsforge.proboards.com/thread/2255/scrapfleets?page=3) of these aliens a bit, which you may ignore if you only want to use them as Orks. ;)
-
typical orkish ship ...
IMO, some littles wings on each side of reactors may be fun
did you have planned a figurehead?
-
I am pondering about side wings now, they'll go on the back, but not sure yet.
