Title: Fall back
Post by: Aldhick on October 22, 2013, 10:23:55 AM
The rules state that the Fall back is basicaly a free move with no other restrictions besides ending 1 cm away from enemy
Let's say there are two units fighting each other and the combat ends draw. Then one unit decides to stand it's ground and another to fall back throwing let's say three 6's. Does it mean the falling back unit can move to the rear of the first unit?

You could play it like that, but it would be complete chees and senseless. Fall back says back in the word, does it not?

cheers

Ole

Exactly, that's why I wonder, why it's not more specified, or wheather I'm missing something...

Ole is correct in interpreting the ENGLISH verb, but the way the RULE reads does allow any move to be made within the legal parameters of not getting to close to the enemy.

Remember that you roll off, with the winner determining who needs to fall back first and THEN decide.

Also, IIRC only a WINNING unit can decide to HOLD GROUND instead of PURSUIT or FALL BACK.

There is no cheese in playing this as per the rules as there are restrictions in its application! It is actually working as intended when played that way, I had a design discussion with Rick on this as we where working on the Skaven.....! The ONE issue with this rule is that it is call a FALLBACK....

As a Houserule that is somewhat widespread it is handeled so that on a draw this needs to be made "back" towards you own line (which in some case may be more confusing!) and that only a victorious unit that DECLINES its pursuit may make a EXPLOIT MOVE (which would be the non-backward fallback)

No, when falling back you move and you can not get closer to the enemy unit you were fighting. Draw a line 180º of your fighting base frontal and you could recolocate wherever in the back zone but not crossing that line.

EDIT: as Ole highlight: That is WMA, not WM

Thanx for the insight Lex! I thought it works this way. I just like to be sure.

This seem pretty logical way to me, but it is not what the rules say as far as I know.

Jorge....  where in the errata is that ? I know that most groups apply this, but where in the rules is this explicitly stated?

It's not in the errata it's a WMA rule.

Sorry for the confusion with WMA.

Maybe it helps if you keep in mind that the unit falls back from combat and not from any direction!

Mind if we re-visit this again, please?

IMHO the 'fall back' term is referring to stepping away from hacking at the enemy, and then neither standing still nor pursuing them, but rather, joining up with your standard banner and officers wherever they be calling you to come to.

The context that the rules describe, actually presents equal favor of "Fall back" being backwards or forwards (or any direction-wards) if you so choose.

With 3 basic options (pg 39) if opponent is still alive and if one side is victorious: pursue, stand, "rally in another spot that is tactically better for us lads!" aka 'Fall Back'. A better tactical spot may not be backwards. Officer may see a spot up ahead on higher ground, grabs the banner holder and drags him to the top of the hill yelling for his troops to rally on him. Could be any direction.

pg. 44 Fall Backs

" ... The opportunity to fall back gives players a chance to pull units out of combat and move them to better tactical positions."

"A fall back is basically a free move that represents the unit rallying back on its standards and officers. Unlike an evade, drive back, or retreat, it doesn't have to be made in a specific direction or over an exact distance, nor does it have to be made in a straight line." [emphasis was mine for clarity]

Thoughts?

Yes you are right Ironhelm. I think the point is clear:

WM (fantasy) any direction
WMA when falling back you move and you can not get closer to the enemy unit you were fighting.
