Title: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on November 20, 2013, 02:42:57 PM
For those of you on Tactical Command, this is old news, but for the rest of you, I hope you like it. This is a project I and several other have had under wraps for a bit now but it's progressed far enough along that we feel it's time to show what we've done and see what folks think about it. So I'd like to go ahead and present the early stages of Battlegroup Helios for your enjoyment:

First up is the Helian Capital-class ship. It's roughly the same size as a cruiser from BFG if anyone is looking for a comparison. There will be several options for this and what I'm showing is the core ship without these in place. Some ideas are armor plating at the rear to protect the engines as well as cannon and sensor options for the split prow below.

Split prow:

These are some of the final designs, albeit still in rough sketch form. The goal will be to make via CAD and go from there. So what do you think? Good, bad, ugly? We'd love to know if there is any interest in this kind of thing!

Absolutely gorgeous design. I wish you luck in the continued development and shall be watching closely. (Don't think I said so on TacCom).

As said:
cool stuff. The bridge variant is interesting, well done.
The lower bridge looks better now, the upper part needs final touches. ;)

Looking good so far!

Would've preferred the "standard" prow to be more pointed. The split prow is awesome tho!

Actually that rounded front is what attracted me. I've already got plenty of pointy grim-dark spaceships with pointy prows :D

Great concepts! Love the little dome in the middle of the ship and the rounded prow.

I prefer the split one. Is something different.

Awesome guys! I think we are almost ready to start building the models at this point. The goal will be to do both prow types. The split prow front there is the receptacle for either a cannon mount or a sensor cluster mount.

Will this be a scratch make or a 3d print?

High rest 3d print master.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: fracas on November 25, 2013, 03:54:42 AM
Nice concept.
Will the weapons be modular?
If so will they use the IN BFG modules? In which case I think the batteries should be but in with option for either lances or launch bays.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Islacrusez on November 25, 2013, 11:06:14 PM
Looks suspiciously like it already has launchbays in the second hardpoint, behind the battery in the first hardpoint.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on November 26, 2013, 01:25:32 AM
There will be a degree of modularity to the weapons. It just makes sense if there are different types of ships built around a single hull. Obviously we can't replicate BFG weapons since Gw owns that IP, but I'm sure enterprising souls could make GW weapons work.

High rest 3d print master.

Sorry if I'm being rude here, but which 3d printing service will you be using? I'm also looking for a good one for my project. :)
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on November 27, 2013, 01:01:38 AM
TBH, I'm not really sure. My part is to design the ships and create the 3d model for the print but the rest is being handled by other team members.

Sorry to push, but what price would these be going for?
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on November 27, 2013, 11:16:14 PM
Again, I don't think we've finalized the prices. Depends on production costs and distribution cost and I don't want to tell you something that's way off base.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Malika on November 28, 2013, 07:38:01 AM
So Battlegroup Helios is, or will be, an actual company? The team has its own equipment for printing and such? If so, could you check what kinda printer they use using, and what material will be used to make the master?

Don't know if I'm pushing it here, if so I really apologize, don't want to create an awkward situation. It's just that I'm super curious how you guys will do the production. :)
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on November 29, 2013, 01:51:22 AM
It isn't a company per se... think more model line. Again I don't really have any details to give you but we've talked about a wax master that they do something chemically to that erases or somehow smooth out the printing striations.

So any updates on this project? :)

None at this point. I believe we are ready to move into the build stage, but I've got a few pressing deadlines before I can start in on it.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on March 02, 2014, 01:59:31 AM
So I realize it's been quite a while since I posted the concept art. The truth is not much happened since I've had several outstanding projects that needed finished before I could start on this. Between this week and next I should have enough time to finish out the model and prep it for printing. Right now there's still detailing to add to the superstructure and bridge as well as some filler on the engines to aid casting and some final detail on the wing and rear between the engines.... as well as the entire underside of the model.

In the mean time, I thought I'd post a couple of teaser preview renders of how the cruiser's shaping up for everyone. Enjoy!

Its a very cool design.  Its going to be trouble when you get to the point when you want to mold it as its got a lot of undercuts.

Post by: Vaaish on March 03, 2014, 08:49:15 PM
Thanks guys, still a long way to go though.

Unseelied, I'm working closely with an expert caster and we don't think there will be any undue difficulty with casting the model. When he has a chance to look it over more closely I'm sure we'll find areas that need filling prior to printing it. :)

Post by: Zarathustra Sucuine on March 03, 2014, 10:45:42 PM
Those look awesome, I'm thinking the split prow could be nova cannon spinalmount :P The curved prow is interesting, will have to see it in the flesh to make a descision. Love the art, BFG is taking off in my club so these if priced nicely could form people's fleets.

Really like the look of this design -  keep at it. Will surely get quite a few if they don't cost the earth! (unlike all the stuff on ebay!)
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on March 07, 2014, 12:38:48 AM
Thanks, guys!

Update time:
Right now the top is probably 95% complete. There might be more detail to add here and there and definitely some holes to fill before it gets cast. The prow also needs a bit of work, but I really need to get some weapons on the ship to make sure I don't need to widen the prow before that happens.

On the rear, I've added the final engine cluster, again might need some tweaks on the lower cluster as I get more detail added to make it look right. The underside is probably 60% complete at this point but I've got a lot more framework bits to do before it's in a place to show.

There's also been a lot of work done cleaning up geometry to make things easier to print.

Vaaish! These renders are superb! I finally get around to checking into the forum and find these have been modeled, really nice execution.

I have been kept busy at work, which has left little time for BFG much to my frustration, but the upside is that we have now setup our own 3D printer at work! I am one of two principle users of the machine (an Objet 30Pro (http://www.stratasys.com/3d-printers/design-series/precision/objet30-pro)) and one of the first things I wanted to print on it was some BFG ships.

I have not had time to model anything up yet to get it going, but I'd be more than happy to do some test prints if you'd like Vaaish? Discussing it with the team here, personal projects are fine and even encouraged on our new toy - I made sure of that! ;)
The print quality (http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet/rigid-opaque#content-slider-1) we are seeing  is way (http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet/~/media/Image%20Gallery/3d_printed_artistic_model.jpg) ahead (http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet/~/media/Image%20Gallery/rigid_opaque_blue_motor.jpg) of the other systems we'd seen (SLS printers and certainly MakrBots and their like) and I think it will be ideal for BFG. Ultimately, I want to do a Vengeful Spirit and some organic Eldar models, but I digress. Any help I can be Vaaish, just let me know!

Can you print in HTM140?
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Gorlak on March 11, 2014, 10:32:18 AM
Hi Malika,

Stratasys make a range of materials for use with their printers and we've gone for the highest in their range of 'desktop' class machines, the Objet 30 Pro, which can print in their 'High Temperature' material (RGD525) (http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet/high-temperature). Looking at it, the Objet High Temperature material has a heat deflection temperature of 63–67 C (145-153 F) upon removal from the printer, which appears to be similar to HTM140, with a heat deflection temperature of 140°C.

We don't currently have any of that material, and I expect it would be about £200-300 for 2kg, which we might have to cover ourselves, but we would get to use it all then. Here are links for more info on the Objet 30 Pro (http://www.stratasys.com/3d-printers/design-series/precision/objet30-pro) and Stratasys' available materials  (http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet)

Hey Gorlak, I'd have to check, but we've already got a printer lined up and we're planning this as a full line of space craft models so I can't release the models into the wild.

It looks like you have a accuracy of .1mm on yours, is that the minimum wall size or the minimum detail size. I've got a couple of bits that hit the .1mm mark, but for the most part I've been keeping .5 and .25mm as my absolute minimums. From what I know of the printer we'll be printing this is a type of wax that then is chemically treated to remove the striations. Don't know much beyond that.

I hope to have some more updates on the ship today. Primary build is complete and I'm starting in on weapons.

missed this first time round, looking rather fantastic, depending on price i could see a mini fleet of these as a side project which would obviously turn into another entire sector fleet project, am taking it that battle ships and escorts are in the pipeline? grand cruisers and light cruisers? transports? er quick think of something else for them to make!  :o
hope it all goes to plan  :)
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Gorlak on March 11, 2014, 07:12:31 PM
Hey Vaaish,

Completely understand, just wanted to give you options. The Objet prints to a resolution og 28 microns (0.028mm) or 16 microns (0.016mm) in the 'clear' material, which is pretty good. Minimum wall thickness is dependent on height and the geometry to be printed, but we've printed threaded detail on bolts of 0.3mm successfully. I suspect it could do more if it wasn't too high etc. The material is a liquid plastic that is cured with a UV lamp, and utilizes a separate support material (gel like) that is washed off after printing. Its impressive to watch, I have it running in the background as I type this printing a bracket detail for work purposes.

Can't wait to see more updates and progress! I hope to be able to contribute in the future if I can find time to commit to some CAD modelling.

Hmm... well I think that would work. I haven't pushed anything under .2mm and details like that tend to be less than 2mm tall.

Time for an update. I finished up the cannon decks yesterday. The net result was that the inset between weapons just wasn't working and got a pretty substantial redo. I'm hoping to finish up the landing decks by the end of the week. which hopefully will mean we'll be ready to start checking the model prior to printing.

Been a crazy week and I've had to juggle projects to get everything done. In any event, I've finished up the hanger decks and included a few shots of them and the hangers with the cannons to show how they work together.

Well, thanks! I've got a minor update in the wings with the beam cannons. No mounts for them yet on the sides, but they do also mount on those squares on the wings and up top right after the prow.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on March 25, 2014, 04:52:11 AM
Well time for the almost final update to this project. The beam decks and turrets are finally finished and yes, the turrets are separate to allow folks to position them or use their own designs and to aid casting. Now that all of the weapon configurations are complete, I've been able to tweak the prow so everything fits together right. Next up will be clean up on the weapons and prow before adding the subdivision modifiers to smooth out the curves. The last item is the split prow option which it looks like I'll be getting together tomorrow.

Enjoy!

We've already sent out the cannon deck for a test print. So far no bad news, but no good news either :)

Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on March 28, 2014, 02:33:03 PM
Don't know for sure. These will have interchangeable prows, but they aren't designed to be compatible with the options already out there. The joint is a flat space right after the prow you can see in some of the shots so I guess you could put about anything you want up there. Probably end up making the ship feel fat and stubby though since the current prow is about 1/3 the length.

A tiny bit of progress. I needed to take a break from computer related projects and do something with my hands so I stopped to clean up and paint a couple of French destroyers from the Catalyst Leviathans box set. I've got a client project I need to focus on tomorrow and maybe Thursday before trying to get this guy finished out.

Progress was getting most of the the creases in place so that the subdivision modifiers can make all the faceted edges curve smoothly and getting the weapons modules cleaned up and ready to go. That leaves the underside, engines and prow for cleanup and the split cannon prow.

After that we should be ready for first pass at the prototypes and cleanup of anything I missed.

Well Folks, this is one of the last updates that's going to have the renders of the model. At this point, barring any crazy need to resculpt, we are ready to do final checks and get these ready for printing. You'll notice that, in addition to the new Gun prow, the curves throughout both prows and the hull are now smooth. There are a lot of other under the hood changes to aid printing, but you probably won't see them. :)

Awesome! well a bit of an update here, the pieces have gone through the checks and are off at the printer so hopefully we'll see them by the end of the month. After that comes the first casts and we'll be ready for production.

In the mean time, I've started work on the concept for the frigate class ship that Zac will be using to build the model using more traditional methods.

Well good news and bad news. The bad news is the prints are not salvageable. The good news is the details are all good and clear, just the print itself has issues that looks a bit like flecks of sand randomly adhered to it and bad striations almost like it shifted a few times during printing. It's also given us an opportunity to address a couple of things that didn't show up until we had the physical models so there's been some revisions to the bridge area to bulk it up a bit. Hopefully we'll be ready to send out for a new set by the end of the week.

I didn't just want to post about the cruiser woes though. I've finished up the concept for the frigate models for Zac to start building so we should start to see updates on the progress there over the next few weeks including the top and side views.  I'll leave you with the art,let me know what you think!

We haven't really got a system for preorders yet, but it might be possible though I can't give a date for order fulfillment until we have prints we can cast from. I'll check on it for you.

I'm reading this correctly then, dreadnought... Is that like a normal BFG battleship or are we talking something completely different here :D?
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on July 26, 2014, 06:47:14 AM
Hah yes, something different. :)

The dreadnought is roughly the same size as the BFG cruiser. It's a little bigger probably by 1cm. There are two versions, the standard called a Helian Dreadnought and the gun prow called the Helian Firedrake.

Eventually there will be a battleship sized craft, but that will happen after the escorts are done.

TL/DR: We renamed the cruiser to dreadnought.

Cneo: I checked and I think we all feel more confident waiting till we have a usable print in hand before accepting preorders.

Andrew: one step at a time, the battleship will look suitably dangerous :)

Getting closer :)

I've got all the basic functionality in place for the website so I should be able to start coding the front end next week.

We've found an alternative source for printing and we are sending off the weapons and gun prow as a test run. If those come back good (and we expect they will) we can send the rest of the ship off for printing. Probably means that it'll all be ready just about time the website goes live. :)

Update from us today. Looks like the next round of test prints are on their way and should show up soon. Hopefully that means one step closer to production. In the mean time things are crazy busy putting the final touches on the website and store that we'll be launching at the same time as the first wave of models.

I do have something to show, that's the pencils for the dorsal and starboard views of the frigate I posted a while back. These are more refined sketches that will be used in production. Enjoy!

And we have progress! The test print pieces arrived and Zac sent me a pic. They look great so we'll be printing the rest of the bits ASAP! (on a side note, the website is ready to go, just have to flip the switch when we've got models in stock).

I've attached a pic of them in their uncleaned state:

Initially we'll only be offering the dreadnought and Firedrake. When we get the frigates up we'll add a weapons pack for extra modules. I'm not sure we'll do bits other than that.

We already have plans to do a battleship, but that's the last piece of the line and probably won't be done until we get a second line up and running. Doubtful there would be enough margin or interest to make fighters, bombers, etc. viable.

Well folks, it's momentous day... we now have a webpage. Bask in the wonder here: http://www.battlegrouphelios.com/

Ok, truthfully, it's just the offline page right now since the site is disabled until we have stock to sell, but once things are ready and I flip the switch, there's a nice storefront waiting :) I promise.

Not sure. The site will be ready, but we still need the rest of the parts for the dreadnought. They are at the printers and should be in the post shortly if they aren't already. Once we get those we still need to cast up stock for launch, so it could be another 4-6 weeks till launch.

i am  following your new project from the start and i am really looking forward to push some of your ships on my table.

So far and from what i understand, we will be able to order the cruiser and the first escort model for the Helios Battlegroup soon ?
Is there more reference you gone provide at the start ?

Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: Vaaish on October 05, 2014, 07:37:58 PM
Yeah, me too :) I'm a bit stuck as to how I want to define the Helian look. Part of me wants to do the ship up like how we see the Roman and Greek temples today in bone or white with color accents for domes, metals etc. The rest of me wants to do something more interesting with maybe more of the Homeworld paint look.

Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: horizon on October 06, 2014, 07:56:29 AM
I think you should start fiddling around with the digital image you have, just to try out some colours. Or print it on paper and colour them that way.

The Bone white with golden accents will ofcourse work, but I can understand if you want something different. BFG styled ships often end up in a more "muted" colours, war-torn, ages old look, you know what I mean. With FSA you often see the morge bright models. Withing BFG only Eldar and Tau end up like that with some. It is just the universe they fly in.
Paint them in a BFG style the BFG following will immediate recognize them and love it. Paint it in a more non-bfg way you might perhaps find more customers (as they eye is caught differently) outside the BFG community.
The model itself is great but non-bfg'ers will at a first glance always tell it is bfg. Ofcourse.

The rounded surfaces on the model scream for a good colouring. :)

Title: Re: New Ship models

White and gold is what immediately came to my mind. In the setting we are creating the Helian ships are the most opulent of the human civilisation, and will be constructed/painted accordingly. The next fleet we are planning will be the standard utilitarian design and construction used by the majority of the human empire.

Just thought I'd put this here:
(http://www.resinaddict.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/BGH_Dreadnought_masters-300x225.jpg) (http://www.resinaddict.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/BGH_Dreadnought_masters.jpg)

This is the set of production master parts, taken from the first moulds of the 3D prints. I'll use these to make multiple new sets of moulds which will in turn be used for mass production of the Dreadnought and Firedrake kits. Everything else is lined up ready to launch the new kits as soon as I've built up some stock. Soon, I promise!
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: sricardos2000 on November 07, 2014, 02:29:22 PM
Wow, what type of 3D printing did you use for the masters? Was there some post processing, I can't see any build lines at all.

Ships look epic by the way.
Title: Re: New Ship models
Post by: mangozac on November 08, 2014, 02:24:12 AM
Those prints were done by Vision Proto in the US (http://visionproto.com/ (http://visionproto.com/)). I don't know the actual printing machine but suffice to say it gives flawless results for such models. There was practically no post-processing required other than cleaning up a couple of marks where the support material joined the model. It was printed hollow to save cost so I also had to fill it with resin.

There are literally no build lines or striations. You pay for it though - it's ten times the cost of printing in FUD from Shapeways. But in my opinion printing in anything other than this kind of quality is a waste of time.

So these showed up in the post yesterday. Not much at the moment but they are the pre-production casts for the Dreadnought and Firedrake. I'll be painting these up in the coming weeks.

If all goes well, we'll be launching December 1.

For some reason that picture didn't really impress me that much. However, it is pretty awesome that Andy Chambers is said to be working on this upcoming game.

I wonder if they can live up to the expectations though, not only from a gaming point of view, but also from a ship design perspective.

And for the game itself: I wonder if Andy will ditch ordnance from the game. In an interview he once said he was never sure on it regarding BFG and almost cut it.
But the thing with ordnance is: due movies like Star Wars and pc games like Wing Commander people will expect this in a space ship game.

It's impressive due purely to its size! It looks unfinished though - seems like it needs detailing passes, particularly on the prow...

I've always loved ordnance, kinda hoped for more stuff to be there. So different types of fighters, probes, etc.

But yeah, back on topic!
