Title: I snagged an Imperator: Now..
Post by: aussiekirgan on February 25, 2014, 09:49:58 AM
Yes, Yes I did  ;D I'm very happy to have got one for a reasonable price on Ebay, with a little work and parts making to do but nevertheless I am stoked.
Just wondering if the assembled brilliances have tackled something similar. I need to strip a thick priming coat, and would like (best case) to be able to remove glue. I've had good results with dettol in the past, but have never stripped an Epic model before. I want to make sure that plastic of that age isn't especially sensitive or vulnerable to chemicals.
Any help much appreciated!

Getting primer off plastic is tough. Super Clean or Simple Green are your best bets. After that there's not much that'll work on plastic and not destroy it.

Good luck - maybe steeping it in a bucket of Fairy Power Spray for a few days should weaken the outer coat of paint!

Cheers guys.
Does anyone think that the older plastic would be any more vulnerable than the more recent stuff?

doubt it, I've stripped quite a lot of older SM2 era models (plastic beetleback warlords) in dettol recently with no ill-effects

It's hard plastic and should be just as good today as it was 10 years ago!

Do a test on a small piece first? Does Dettol have any instructions not to put on plastic? I used it recently to strip some metal Epic Land Raiders and remember reading the "do not do" instructions but can't remember specifically and don't have the bottle with me.

I've definitely used it on plastic marines before, but hadn't had any adverse reactions. Not having dealt with any of the Epic stuff ever before, I thought it was worth a triple check. Dettol did darken the shade of some metal minis (Battletech mainly), but to be honest I liked it :)
Cheers Guys, Hard to find a small bit on an imperator but I'll give it a test and see what happens :)

I'd definitely recommend power spray over dettol - it's a lot less messy, and smelly for that matter...
