Title: [WM] TriWiz tournament 2013 (Saffron Walden)
Post by: empireaddict on March 02, 2014, 08:42:51 AM
Pleased to report that the postponed 2013 TriWiz WM tournament took place yesterday in Saffron Walden Town Hall.  Thanks to all who participated and to Janners for organising the venue.  As noted immediately by the participants, this tournament was notable for the fact that there were no duplicate armies and no-one used High Elves!

We used the Scouting Rules which seems to speed up the start of games considerably, and that was important in a time-constrained tournament of only 3 rounds.  Scoring and errata used as follows:

4 points for win & break opponent
3 points for win (with more than 600 points damage inflicted on opponent)
2 points for win (with less than 600 points damage inflicted on opponent)
1 point for a draw (both sides within 150 points of damage)

Support
Count support before removing casualties.  If combat is won, supporting stands can also pursue but unit must remain in support of same unit(s) and cannot make contact with enemy.

Flanks
To hit a unit in the flank the bulk of the charging unit must be inside a 45 degree arc of the side of the target unit.  This applies even if the only part of the target unit they can see is the flank.

Fall-back
In the event of a drawn combat, fall-back moves can only be made sideways or backwards, ie. a unit cannot go forward of an imaginary line drawn across the main line of contact they had with the enemy.

Results as follows:

1st (9 points) Orcs & Goblins
2nd (7) Dwarves
3rd (6) Albion
4th= (5) Nippon; Kislev; Goblins; Dark Elves
5th (4) Ogres
6th= (1) Chaos; Undead

Unexpectedly, I had to step in and play so didn't get many photographic opportunities.  I'll check the pics I did take and if they're any good, I'll post them up.

Stuart,
There were 10 players.

I can tell you my list  which was Kislev using Empire minis (pics in modelling & painting threads).

General (Tzarina)
Hero on Bear
2 Shaman (ring of magic & scroll of dispelling)
4 Axemen
2 War wagons
4 Knights
8 Horse Archers

Lessons learned:
1. Don't forget to use the Tzarina in the magic phase!
2. If you take the gamble and push them well forward, war wagons are very useful.
3. Horse archers are great for harrassing the enemy, but at 80 points each they're a costly way to do it.
4. Shaman + ring of magic + opponent having used up his dispell scroll = automatic Monster Bear.

Fantastic - great to hear that there were so many different armies in use.

I agree, light cavalry is slightly over pointed for what it can do in Warmaster  - apart from Ellyrian Reavers and Araby Flying Carpets maybe, these always seem to pay for themselves!

Pics would be very nice.

Janners and I are already looking at future dates.  We didn't do pre-publicity because we deliberately chose a smaller (and cheaper) venue with limited capacity.  We wanted to avoid the scenario - which has occurred - where there's lots of initial interest, a large hall is hired, then people dropout last minute (for legitimate reasons), and the cost shoots up for those who do come.

I understand that reasoning , however if you give me plenty of notice , I would like to participate in the next event . Will need time to organise time off work , travel etc .

My Undead didn't do so well...

Still it was a great day, everyone was very friendly and I look forward to the next one!

Thanks.  We're also kicking around the idea of a one-day doubles tournament.
