A few diehards got together at Warhammer World at the weekend and did a 5k game. This isn’t really a battle report - just an introduction to a few photos that I took during proceedings. Inserted below in sequence. Our main observation was that 5k either side on a fairly small table worked rather well.
Shame that WHW doesn’t have any 10mm tables or terrain any more but it’s still a pleasant enough place to visit. Just not as welcoming as the olden days …

Here are the other photos. For the record, the DEs and Daemons prevailed ...
-
Great pics Jim! Are those Pistoleers with a Shaggoth in their flank? Bet that went well. :P
-
Yes. And, yes, it did not have a happy ending for the pistoliers. The Shaggoth was a proxy for a Greater Daemon.
-
Beautiful! It's great that people keep the flame alive.
-
Great looking game.
Out of curiosity, how does WHW treat specialist games being played there now? Do they show an interest, or try to put a curtain around you in the corner?
-
I don't recognise any of Janaway's figures there! Did he lie to me?
-
Very nice pictures and minis
Particularly impressed with the table flocking - more realistic colours than I'm used to, looks the business

mostly with very thinly veiled suspicion that you're not using 'official' models.... there's a certain staffer who *always* noses around whenever he spots SG being played... I really hate going to WHW these days
-
That makes absolutely no sense...
Not your post, of course - the general attitude of our once beloved company. Not a flame post...mostly a "sigh" post..
If it's any consolation (I know it's not) there are still few and far between die hard store managers who haven't gone completely over to the dark side. At the Ascot Vale (Victoria) store, for example, Matt the manager is clearly not allowed to have people play Specialist Games during "official" opening hours. It's an actual policy he's required to abide by. So since he's the manager, on a Sunday, when he closes up shop to the general public, he breaks out Space Hulk, Epic, Warmaster and the occasional BFG to game with us mere mortals - GW policy be damned!
Kinda like a Specialist Games speakeasy
Where there's a will, as they say...
;)

it's my buddy's fault.....
we used to go there on thursday nights to play epic, one week my friend was using his necron army with scratchbuilt vehicles, and exodus wars infantry, he was told he couldn't bring them back (fair enough)
but then *every* time we've been in there, Nick Bayton comes nosing around.... 6 months ago we were playing warmaster and EmpireAddict's snipped 100% original GW dwarf rangers were called into question, he was all smirking saying "are those pendraken dwarfs??" we told him no, then he went in the back room for a bit and didn't come back
I'll also say that he wasn't actually on the clock, he was there playing 40k on games night.... but any time he sees anyone playing epic he comes over and noses around.... I just don't feel remotely welcome there any more...
-
Ah ha - is that who it is? When the Evil Empire collapses in 10 years I can imagine people like that dressed in the rags of promo shirts scraping their claws through the Finecast ashes, pariahs to the rest of the gaming world. =-P

To answer the original question, I think nowadays the atmosphere at WHW for SG is neutral gusting a-bit-embarrassed-that-we're-still-around, whereas in the 'good old days' it was very positive (in terms of terrain availability and staff interest).
Have Specialist Gamers become the equivalent of the embarrassing old uncle that you have to invite to family occasions?
As to the future, who knows? If they continue to follow the logic of throwing overboard the mini types that make them the least profit, then in 10 years time WHW will contain just two gamers constantly playing one another with different coloured Space Marines!
-
Great looking game!! ;D
I really like the rules for Daemon armies.
-
Curious, did the DE/Daemons have two generals or just the one?
-
We're not the embarrassing uncle we are the AWESOME uncle who tells the kids about the fun stuff they're missing out on! ;-P
-
Awesome game!
thanks for sharing

They had two, the empire side had a second hero with Ld9 to help compensate :)
-
Nice pictures, great looking steam tank, happy to see a Giant thrown into the mix too. I plan to include some in my Empire/Marienburg army as well!
-
The giant is a monstrous mount I believe :)

Yes, it was a very pleasant day. WM really comes into its own with this size of battle, I think.

I was at a local GW store recently and we talked about games, I expressed my disinterest in modern rules (kept my mouth shut re silly overpriced models- those who know me will be impressed).
I started talking about old games, Warmaster in particular he was most interested in the game mechanics, saying at one point 'Hey I should be selling to you not the other way around.' :)
