Title: [WM] Tale of x gamers... (any interest?)
Post by: pw on September 04, 2009, 11:24:24 AM
Hi, having stalled after painting a single strip of Empire Halberdiers I'm thinking that I need some extra motivation if I'm ever going to get an army painted and I'm wondering if anyone on here might like to take part in a 'Tale of X gamers' style thread to keep me company?

The 'rules' can be sorted properly if there's any interest but I'm basically thinking that painting a single army selection each week and posting some pics would be about the right pace. By my reckoning that'd be a 1000 point army in about three months and 2000 in six if it keeps going that long.

So, anyone up for it?

I'd love to do it, but I don't think I'll be able to make that kind of commitment until '10.

I'm in.
Got CD, Albion or Orcs and goblins to to do allong with 4k points of chaos but these are not a legal force.
Let me know what rules you are thinking of using.

Excellent, glad to have some company. ;D Although at the rate you seem to paint I may end up looking rather sluggish!

As to rules, well, let's give it a day or two to see if anyone else fancies joining in and then see what we fancy doing as a group. Anything that'll get me to paint around four detachments a month will suit me.

It's based on a classic (and oft repeated) White Dwarf article in which a group of gamers (usually four) commit to build and paint a certain amount of figures each month, the idea being that it motivates everyone and generates lots of nice pictures and hopefully a finished army by the end of the process. I've seen it done on various forums with various 'rules', but basically the key is having to post pictures of your painting at set intervals and to aim to have completed a set amount.

My initial thoughts are:

1) Pick an army. It'd be nice to have each painter working towards a coherent force if possible.
2) Paint one detachment or character each week. This amount could be scaled down if that seems too much, but I'm imagining using characters as a delaying tactic, effectively giving me extra time to spend on the rank and file.
3) Everyone involved posts their pictures in the same thread (but there's no reason why people couldn't maintain their own threads too). This could be a single thread for the entirety of the project or it could be a fresh one for each month. On busier forums there tend to be seperate threads for comment etc but while this board is fairly quiet I can't see a thread becoming too unwieldy (worth discussion though).
4) We all offer criticism/comment/praise as we go along.
5) We pick a set period for the thing to run (6 months should have an army done?)

Oh, and Carrington, come on join in! Paint those Nuln guys up!

Im gonna to love it!! (my girl is gonna hate it  :) )

Is there a limit of points to paint? or all memebers have to take the same number of units? or the goal is raise an army whatever the size?

Considering this was what pushed me over the edge to register, I'm in!

However, does this have to be "legal" warmaster lists, or are the trial ones okay, also what about pseudo WM lists such as WM-ME or WM-Hyboria?

Hi Rolgan, welcome aboard!

I think any 10mm army that uses the WM system should be fine, the more variety the better.

I think the new trial lists should definitley be allowed  8)
As for the characters bit- this is blatant cheating  :D as I have already painted most of mine up. Only joking.
I would like suggestions from the 'audience' as to what I should paint.

The options are:
2k of Albion - need to purchase chariots
2k of Chaos Dwarves - need to buy army
3k of Orcs & Goblins
2k of beastmen - need to buy army
2k of mortal chaos - will just be knights, warriors, marauder hores & foot plus an alternative chaos spawn.

It will be great to see 2k of chaos Dwarfs! (by the way 3k of greenskins could be astonish too  :o)

I'd like to see the Orcs, it might just slow you down (I've seen your posts over on Warseer!), but then Chaos Dwarves would be really great to watch too.

As you've no doubt guessed, I'll be in with my Empire army, aiming for 2000 points (with a bunch of Knights to buy and possibly a hero on Griffon to give me an extra week of cheating!)

I am in an undead project, so I will be with the skellies. I think I will go for 1,5k or so. Just to have painted enough material to make differents configuration about 1k

Orcs are my intention, although not 3k of them, so I'll vote chaos dwarves as well

Sounds cool, nice idea pw, so count me in :).

I've already started my Dark Elves, but I'd be happy to switch to 2k of Araby for this project.  How about we start with a bare-metal/undercoated picture of the forces we're talking about?

Great to have you on board Pugwash. I was excited about seeing your Dark Elves but Araby would be even more fun to see, I've hardly seen any painted Araby stuff but what I have seen has looked superb.

How about we start with a bare-metal/undercoated picture of the forces we're talking about?

Sounds like a great way to start, I'll open up a new thread later so that we can get some introductions going and start showing off those piles of unpainted lead.

The rules version 1:

So, here's a first attempt at the 'rules', this is not set in stone and we need to all feel happy with them>

1) The 'Tale of Warmaster Painters' officially begins on Monday the 8th of September.
2) There will be a single 'official' thread. I'll open this once the rules have been confirmed.
3) Each participant should aim to make an initial introductory post within a week of the start date in which they outline their plans, and post any pre-painting pics/army lists etc.
4) Any 10mm army that uses the WM rules (official or not) is eligible. This includes armies for Warmaster, Warmaster Ancients, and BOFA.
5) Participants should aim to paint one 'selection' from their army list per week. This includes characters and warmachines. This is deliberately intended to allow several 'easy' weeks across the project.
6) Photographs of the painted units should be submitted to the official thread every two weeks: i.e. each participant should post pictures of two 'units'.
7) The first phase of the 'TOWP' will end in Mid December. If people wish to continue we'll enter phase two!

Does that sound ok?

A couple of things I'm not sure about:

1) Does a single thread sound manageable? (an alternative would be to have a thread purely for posting pictures and another for comments; or, to have a new thread each month)
2) How often should we say we'd post pictures? (I'd say either once a week, once a fortnight or once a month)

Cheers - Paul.

EDIT: What about a thread each month with the requirement to post once a week? That way the threads wouldn't become too unwieldy (if there are five or so participants that'd mean each month's thread had around 20 posts with pictures plus whatever comments come along.

I actually think that this option is the most viable.

If there is more then 5 people to come onboard with this, then I can set-up a seperate subforum to host the threads, that will make keeping track of it easier !!

That might be handy, it'd be nice to have a section where the monthly threads could be seen alongside each other without intervening threads. We're at five now so we'll see how it goes. I take it the section would be a 'child' of the Painting section?

If this subsection went ahead perhaps we could have the current month stickied during its 'life'? And it'd make having a 'rules' sticky nice and tidy.

Either way I think a monthly thread with a header along the lines of:
'Tale of Warmaster Painters [September]' is going to be a good option. With weekly(ish) posts it should generate quite a bit of chatter.

What about you Lex, you fancy joining in?

I am facing some rather busy months till the end of the year, but I am tempted, and I do have a viable 2k goblinoid kislev army primed, so I might decide to pick up the challenge.....

Ah, go on! You know you want to...

I'm also facing a busy three months when usually my painting rate would drop drastically (new teaching term coming soon) but that's actually the reason I want to do this (rather than a reason not to).

And if my skewed logic fails then let's return to the ever-convincing 'Ah go on, you know you want to!'

yeah yeah .... the problem for me is I will be on the road a lot of the time, which is not odeal for paiting .... but as I say....   I might  ;-)

BTW.. you have your subforum up and running and you are MODERATING it !!

Thanks, I'll get my mod hat on and get over there tonight. And 'on the road' does sound tricky. I tried painting in a hotel once when I was at a conference and it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped - I just felt like an ultra-nerd in a lonely hotel room.

well, I did do my dwarfs during a tournament trip to the States and Canada a couple of years ago...  they started out undercoated and with 3 days to spare in Memphis before the event I did most of the basecoat. The rest (including doing scenic bases etc was party done during my two day trainride (Memphis-Chicago-Seatle) and the Dwarfs where dullcoated before the next weekend's event in Vancouver..........

I'm not saying the Dark Elves won't get painted as well (pictures pending) - just not for this challenge  ;)

The rules look fine to me pw.  We can always make changes later, if needed, as we see how things go.  Fwiw I'll likely be shifting countries during the later period of the challenge, so all my warmaster will be packed into a shipping container for a month or so.    However, I'll try and get a buffer of pictures built up before then, so I can participate while in painting limbo  :)

Sounds great to me.
Off to photo my orcs as I have no way of getting the Chaos Dwarves purchased in time.
Still at a disadvantage as all my heroes & warmachines are done ;)
I will be doing a few extra units as I am doing a goblin army as a bolt on force (squigs, pump wagon etc.)

I raise your one excitable toddler, to two excitable toddlers and the wife being the one that goes out to work and pays the mortgage, thus leaving me with the little blighters pretty much 24-7... Needless to say, I'm looking forward to when they start school, although talking about having a third is tempting...

Anyway, getting to play Space Hulk today, even if it was in my local GW store against a bunch of kids who didn't have a clue was great. Even getting away from the girls for just a couple of hours helps to relieve things for the following week of endless dish washing, clearing up, cooking, nappy changing, waiting for the eldest to finish on the toilet, and so on...

Better put something OT in this otherwise Lex might get grumpy:

No point in me putting myself up for this, for the reasons outlined above. Whilst I have actually managed to get a bit of painting done recently, I'm waiting until my brush skills have returned properly and I've finished at least five of the Black Templars (40K) that I've been trying to finish for getting on ten years before I return to painting any WM stuff, and then there is that Pegasus I need to finish off. And even then there is my WM Empire and WMA EIR armies that need finishing to proper tournament sizes before I even consider starting any other projects...

@Stomm, if you fancy signing up with an army you've started (making finishing it the goal) that'd be cool. That said, if my experience of one toddler is anything to go by then I can understand that you must be mighty busy! And talking od Space Hulk is cruel, my new set is waiting for me back in the UK and I'm itching to get a game in!

OH, AND AN ANNOUNCEMENT!

Lex has been kind enough to set up a separate area for the Tale of Warmaster Painters and I've posted the (very flexible and changeable) rules over there and opened up a September thread for introductions and early painting. If you're up for the challenge please head on over, and if you aren't then the same applies, I'll certainly be looking for advice and encouragement as things get underway and I'm sure everyone else will feel the same.

Hi guys

This is my first post here and was hoping it wouldnt be to late to sign up for the 'Tale of Warmaster painters'?

It will be with an evil Dogs of War army which is an evr so slight varitation on the trial armies version with just a few units numbers altered and a giant instead of the tuska. (What kind of dogs of war army doesnt have a giant!?  ???)

I dont think I will be able to post the whole army primed to begin with but I will slowely get all the pieces together (alot of it is being converted out of other stuff!)

Hope im not to late!

Hi Angor, it's not to late at all, please do join us. I recognise that avatar from Warseer so I'm pretty excited to see what you come up with - your Chaos army is superb, I still can't get over how cool your ogre character is!

Introductions have just started over on the new thread in the newly created 'Tale of Warmaster Painters' subforum.

Greetings!

This is my frist post here, although I was lurking in the shadows for quite a long time.  ;)

I would love to join the merry company of fellow painters with my shiny host of High Elves. However, in the quest of having the army of 2000 points painted I have already finished a few units. Would that be considered as unfair to other participants? I can post only pictures of the miniatures I am going to paint at the same time as others. I simply know that this project would be a great motivation to keep steady pace of painting for me and I hope there is a way for me to participate in it. Besides I have noticed that no other HE army has been enlisted yet.  :o

Cheers! :)

Hi Swordmaster, of course, no problem. Please do sign up and introduce yourself and your army so far.

Looking forward to seeing the High Elves as they progress and those you've got done already.
