I am in talks with Bob Naismith to sculpt a set of fantasy-Egyptian skeleton troops. I love the look of Vincent's skeletons, as well as the WFB Tomb Kings, and felt that "true" WM Tomb Kings would be a pretty cool thing to have. Right now, this would be strictly for the rank and file - archers and horsemen would not be included.
They would most likely be very similar to Dave's landsknechte, in that they would be on stands of two models to allow variation in the unit. Large, Egyptian-style shields and kopesh-based weapons would also be standard. I'd also like to have a sprue of shields for conversion of other units, but at this time, I don't know if that is something anyone would be interested in.
So, before I go in all the way, I'd like to gauge interest in TK skeleton troops - yay or nay? Also, if you have any ideas for looks or designs, feel free to share.
-
Yes yes yes!
I am very interested. =)
-
I think it is interesting all new units of 10mm. So have my support (I'm not big pocket dude) but I will buy a unit or two of each "reference"
Great, men
-
I'm certainly interested. I've always liked how the GW skeletons are closely ranked together, so if possible it would be nice to have bases that make it easy to squeeze more than the standard 8 onto a 40mm x 20mm stand.
In design terms, I like a mixed approach. The WFB Tomb Guard could provide inspiration for a few armoured infantry models. I'd also like to see a couple with Egyptian-style loin cloths and head-dresses.
-
Unfortunately the cost of sculpting jumps up considerably when doing a full "strip" so I can understand why they are more likely to be in strips of 2 "people" like the current landsknechts.
I would love it if they were a little more like the Tomb Guard - with those Egyptian style swords rather than the scythes and things that the old GW ones had!
Are you considering uniting with Dave and the Warmonger Miniatures site?

I am getting genuinely a little overexcited at the prospect. :-X

Oh yes - I didn't mean more than 2 models per base, just finding a way to make those bases a little smaller so that I can easily fit 5 per stand or something like that. Just an idle thought...

Yes, khopesh are a must!

if you make I will buy :)

I'll talk to the sculptor. These shouldn't be as bulky as something like the Landsknechete, so a row of 5 should be doable - no promises though. A frontage of five models is easier when you're doing a solid strip.

Yep - kopeshes are the plan!

That hack? Psssht... :P We're actually in the same gaming group! I just came up with the idea yesterday, though, so, no, I haven't talked with him about bringing our two tribes together.
-
I would definitely buy what I don't have already and would someday convert on my own. So anything looking like Tomb Guards, Ushabtis, Tomb Swarm, Scorpion (I need a second one), Stalkers and Casket of Souls.
I would probably buy some more spearmen to add variety and avoid converting even more myself.
-
Several French players are enthusiast as well ;)

-
Depending on the price, I might be interested in 2 to 4 units. Although there are several sources of skeleton infantry currently available commercially.
I see these as maybe a "Guard" brigade separate to other, more basic skeleton infantry. Same stats, just looking different. Interesting concept.
Based on Dave's timescale for the Landsknecht and that for the forthcoming Evil Men, I guess we're looking at sometime next year before these would be available?

Thanks for spreading the word, Vincent!

Right now, this is still in the planning stage, and will heavily depend on Bob Naismith's schedule. But yes, likely next year.
-
Speaking as someone who has NO undead at all, and was not enthused about the idea of converting all the old GW ones that are now OOP out there...
I'd probably get at least 8, depending on what they were like. If it went well and went on enough to create Larger Infantry Skeletons / Scorpions etc. I would definitely be in for those as well.
In fact I got so enthusiastic last night as I nodded off I started doodling ideas. I can't afford to commission the kind of strips I long for, though. There's just so many gaps to fill now that GW stopped supporting us. =-/
-
Count me in.
I was actually looking at the modern WH:F Tomb Kings line the other day and lamenting that some of those models weren't around to proxy in for giants, sphinxes, giant scorpions, etc., back when I was collecting for Warmaster. While I can probably dig my cavalry and archers out of the basement, more Egyptian-styled skeletons would be wonderful for bulking out/replacing the old mixed-fantasy base units.
Definitely interested!

Definitely interested!
-
I'm definitely interested too but only if they are compatible with the existing range of original GW Warmaster infantry. Khopesh, proper Egyptian style shields and mad hats sounds great. I'd probably want at least 4 units to do a brigade of skeleton guard.
Large Ushabti?
Dave

Large Ushabti?
Yes, the plan would be to keep them compatible in terms of scale. Being as they likely won't be WM strips though, there will be some variation. In other words, you're not going to be able to cram 6 across a frontage.
At this time, the plan is strictly to do the skeleton infantry. The TK line is still pretty commonly available, so I don't know if there will be any branching out. My primary concern is replacing the current skeleton foot troops with something that actually looks like TKs. Based on Vincent's army, I think the GW Ushabti make fine bone fine stand-ins, if that's what you were looking for. But, again, it's really early in the game - we will see how this project goes before making plans for expansion. :)
-
The cost of a decent sculpt is huge - so rank and file infantry are relatively easy to justify. Units that are 1 per 1000 points have a much lower return on investment, even if everyone with an army wants one.
I think by that - David an co. were asking not for a bone giant, but a unit of the size of the Kroxigor or Trolls, 3 to a base, larger skeletons with animal heads.
-
Interested too.
-
Brilliant!
can you do two types of skeleton infantry. egjptie skeletons with head gear etc for elites/kemri and armour-less figs for lower status kemri figs and VC infantry. personally i am much more interested in a VC army. i have no WM originals so anything would be great, cav, hq's artillery etc...
i will also be using mine for Warhammer 8th ed. 30 - 50 figs to a unit works great with 10mm figs :0)
i'm good for an initial 8 - 12 units
good luck.
-
OK, source files sent to Bob. THe next step is sending him a few WM skellies for size reference.
Question: Musician or no? I don't like the Tomb Guard musician - I was thinking a drummer, but I'm torn. Definitely going to have a champion and a standard bearer. A musician would add variation to the line, but also adds monetary cost and the reduction of a standard troop model.
Any thoughts?
-
*turns head to look at 3k of Undead unpainted or in need of repaint* While I don't need these I want the 10mm scene to flourish. I'll order at least two units to help get the ball rolling. Heh, since when did 'need' ever enter into this btw?

This site needs a "like" button ;D
-
I love the idea of a musician, but understand that that increases the price for you.
-
I would say we shoudl bid on quality. So let's go for a musician.
We try to do something great, eh ?
-
Oops, I missed that. Yes, I think the musician is worth it. Drummer sounds good to me.
Thanks Andys.
-

Not a wind intrument or a pipe ;)
-
OK, the current plan is as follows:
- Five strips of two models each
- The models will be arrayed in ranks (similar to Dave's Landsknecht)
- Three strips of standard troops with kopesh halberds (I'd love to do an additional strip for variety, but $$$$)
- One strip with a champion in the fore, troop in the rear
- One strip with a standard bearer in the front, troop in the rear
- No musician (sorry guys, my wallet can't handle it!)
- I've requested a width allowing a five model frontage on a WM base
-
If you're only going to do 5 strips why not start with archers? Those don't really need a command strip, so 5 variants will fill a unit evenly, assuming you're planning 5 strips per base. Failing that, a 2.5k KS would handle it:
1400 for sculpts
350 for molds
500 for 150 or so units
250 for fees
-
I am excited for Infantry / Archers / Cavalry. All are interesting to me for an army. =)
-
I would support anything egyptian looking so count me in!
-
I will commit to buying anything that is produced... Keep me in the loop.
-
I bought 4 units of Dave's mini's and I'd certainly buy some Tomb King style Skeletons as well.
-
That's very kind of you to provide the numbers Dave. No secret information obviously, but it would take a little work to get them.

Personally, I think the current archers are nondescript enough to apply to either army. Even the WFB TK archers are only differentiates by a couple of models wearing light headgear.
Personally, the horsemen would be my next target, but I imagine their sculpting cost would increase by at least threefold per model.
-
Horsemen with correct shields / banner would be wonderful. I guess you don't need as much variety for cavalry, there's only 3 strips of 2 for Chaos Knights for example. Might that cut the cost?
-
Moin Eric,
count me in.
Ole
-
Any more news on this one? I'm always happy to see people throwing Mr. Naismith more work. =D
-
Love the idea , would be interested in a brigade , would like other rank and file units .
Stuart

Hey guys - sorry for the lack of updates, but we had some really bad medically-related news in the past couple of weeks. Been doing a lot of hospital visits and the like.
My next step is to send Bob some WM Skeletons as a size comparison - I should have those in the mail tomorrow.
-
I am very sorry to hear that.
My best wishes to you and those affected.
-
Health first. Good luck and courage for the following.
-
Hey guys, I received an update from Bob with some early WIP:

-
This is going to be a perfect set for tomb guards :)
-
Oh my goodness that's beautiful! Consider them sold (to me, at least).
-
They look good. It would be nice to see a picture of a base of them next to a stand of old warmaster GW skeletons for size comparison purposes.
Good stuff!
Dave
-
I'm sending a stand or two to Bob for comparison. I'll ask him to post some side by side photos. Honestly, I don't think it will be a huge deal - WM stands aren't really 100% in scale with each other anyway. I'm good with "close enough" at this scale.

looks great!
-
Very nice!
-
Frankly, I'd been without interest in Tomb Kings, on all fronts, yet, these desert dwellers are looking pretty neat!
-
The shiels are removable I guess? Otherwise I don't see way how he would be able to cast them.
-
Definitely interested in using these for Tomb Guards. ;D
-

They look fine from the pic, a few might go into the depth of the mold but I don't see any undercuts.
-
Hey guys - I know it's been a long time, but I've got an update! I've received the sculpts back from Bob Naismith, and they look pretty cool. I've attached a few photos from Bob - I tried to take some, but wasn't able to get any good images before I brought them to the caster.
Which brings me to my next bit of news - they're at the caster! The first step is to get some masters/samples cast up. This should take about a week - once I get them and they are approved I'll get some photos up and we move on to pricing and production molds!
Special thanks goes out to Stormwind for financing three additional models for the set!
-
Great. I would add some ribs on collars and probably some folds/wrinkles on a head-dresses. This would lead to more expressiveness when painting.
-
looking great :D
-
Hurrah, glad we can finally do a big reveal. =)
-
Great concepts! and very nice figures
-
Quick update - I go to the caster tomorrow to approve the test casts. I'm going to try to get a set to take photos of.
-
Really good news!
how many "units" "references" are you planning (one or two)?
-
Really good news!

I'm not sure what you're asking, jchaos79. Can you clarify?
I went and picked up the tests today - they look really cool! I'll get some photos up shortly.
-
I think he's asking if you're planning on doing other units. Referencing other known units.
-
Sorry for the confusion.
My question is: All the poses will be in a single reference? (prize?)
-
I'm afraid at the minute we need to see if this one pays off, so it's just one for now!
It's 1 unit with 11 individual sculpts.
Of those, 9 are normal warriors and 2 are command models.
Of the 2 command models, 1 is a banner bearer and 1 is a drummer.
I'm guessing that about 8 models would fit on each base, so a unit would be 2 command figures and 22 warrior figures or something like that.
-
Nice, thanks
-
Liking what I see .
When do you think units will be for sale ??.
-
Liking what I see .
When do you think units will be for sale ??.
Very shortly - they are at the caster now. I'll be doing an initial run of 100 sets.
I was going to have some photos today, but when I washed the models to get a better contrast, I didn't thin it enough and the models look splotchy. I'll get some better shots tonight and post them.
-
Will they be available through retail or do we simply email you?
-
I would be interested in 4 units . As stated earlier may be guard brigade same stats .
stuart
-
Will they be available through retail or do we simply email you?
They will not be available for retail at this time. I'll post when they are ready and anyone interested can order them directly from me.
-
Any chance you could paint a few up, so we can see them in all their glory please? :)
-

Well, I injured my arm last week, so painting is kind of tough at the moment. I've also got an event to get ready for next week, so time is really limited. I'll do what I can though.
-
Get back to painting your Chaos for Adepticon!
-
Get back to painting your Chaos for Adepticon!
Already done - I just have to drybrush the bases and attach flock. With my arm stuck at 90 degrees, this stuff is way more difficult than I would have thought... :-\
-
The drybrush starts at the hips...
-
I'll definitely pick a heap of these guys up when they are ready :)
-
I'll line up for a unit or 4 as well....
We WM players from Downunder should do a group order.
-
I would like 4 units too please.
Dave
-
I am taking 2 units
-
I would also like 4 units please.

Good idea mate, I'd join in. Last time worked really well.
-
That's probably a good idea - international shipping is crazy.
In addition, if you guys want to pick up any of Dave's Warmonger Miniatures (http://www.warmonger-miniatures.com/), those could also be added to the box.
I'll have a good photo of the skeletons up this weekend for you guys. I've been having a lot of car trouble and fighting with the insurance company this week. >:(
-
Did your skellies will be part of warmonger catalogue or are private own work/project?
-
They're my own project, but Dave and I are in the same gaming group.
-
Cool and we'll done .
-
Hey guys - sorry for the delay, but I finally have some photos to share!

I am expecting them to be ready and waiting for me at the caster when I return from Adepticon. Once I approve them and get them packaged, I'll let you guys know!
-
They look really stunning !!.
Can't wait to get some of these .
Stuart
-
Ahh the banner is hugely improved! Great stuff!
-
Quick update - the order is ready and being shipped from the caster. Once I get them sorted and bagged, I'll let you guys know.
-
*awaiting update expectantly*
-
Ditto .
Stuart
-
Four units for me also :D
-
I came home from work today and found a large box full of skeletons on my doorstep!
Each unit consists of two command strips, a mix of thirteen rank and file strips, and one extra hero. Bases are not included.
Cost for each unit is $11 USD plus shipping. If you're interested, please send me a PM rather than posting in the thread - it will be easier to track and won't clutter the thread.
Again, thanks to Stormwind/Ben for the assist on these.
Hopefully I'll be able to get a unit painted up shortly and photos posted.
-
Very nice , pm sent .
-
I received my skeletons today! ;D
Thank you for preparing them!
-
Pm sent

Received today - really great miniatures with bag of character (even at 10mm!) and enough variety to create suitably intimidating ranks of bone.
Thanks a lot for making them and sending them out so swiftly. These skeletons and the Warmonger lansdknechts are a cut above almost every other 10mm fantasy figure out there.
-
Arrived today in a mint condition.
I have to say the sculpts are awesome, they are worth every cent! Very very reccommendable.
