This is the thread for all September entries. While it 'officially' starts next Monday there's no harm in getting going! In the first week (7th-13th) I'd suggest that painting is optional and ask that everyone involved say a little about themselves and what they're planning to paint.
So far the following have joined up:
pw (Empire)
azrael71 (Goblins)
jchaos79 (Undead)
Pugwash (Araby)
Rolgan (Orcs)
Lex (Goblinoid Kislev) <-- dont you love being able to edit in yourself .....
Angor (Dogs of War)
Meister.Petz (Empire)
Swordmaster (High Elves)
m4jumbo (Empire)
Stomm (WMA Romans)

My entry to this inaugural ‘TOWP’ is going to be an Empire army which I’m hoping to get to 2000 points. I’d always planned on painting them up in the red and white of Talabheim and when Meister.Petz shared his techniques for painting just this scheme a couple of weeks ago it was time to start. I then discovered just how slow a painter I am. Hence my need for a challenge like this - and I’m fully aware of the potential irony of the situation when I fall at the first hurdle!
I’ve got most of what I need in a pile of ziplock bags but in order not to scare myself with the size of the task at hand I’ve limited myself to unpacking this lot:
The silvery knights are about to head into a jar of Dettol, the rest have been sprayed black (so I guess I’m already cheating!).
My eventual list, based largely on what I fancy painting, is this:
General on Griffon, Orb of Majesty (235)
Hero (80)
Hero (80)
Wizard, Ring of Magic (75)
4 Halberdiers (180)
4 Crossbows (220)
4 Knights (440)
2 Pistoliers (190)
2 Flagellants (140)
2 Cannon (170)
Helblaster (50)
Steamtank (120)
Total 1980 leaving 20 spare for magic weapons.
Having played exactly four games of WM I’m not expecting this list to be particularly good but it does look fun to paint. Eventually I hope to paint up a further 500 points or so to give me more options.
-
I have had this army sat for over a year now and keep getting distracted so here we are.
They will also constitue a large goblin only force and cover the nomadic orc list.
That and I cannot buy the Chaos Dwarves in time.
The army currently stand at:
Painted units
2 Giants
2 Rock Lobbas
4 Pump Wagons
4 Spear Chukkas
6 Fanatic cannons
2 Pump wagons
1 black orcs
2 heroes on wyvern
9 wolf riders (4 of then bofa warg riders)
25 assorted goblin and orc characters
So for the tale the units to prep and paint are:
6 Boar Riders (1 savage boars), mights split to 3 models a stand for these to get a couple of extra units.
3 Black Orcs
8 Orc Warriors (2 Savage)
2 Spider riders
22 Goblins (2x Forest Goblin, 2x Night Goblins, 2x Archers, 16 bofa goblins)
4 wolf riders (4 bofa wargs)
6 wolf chariots
3 stands of boar chariots
Loads of squigs
Potentially 2 units of squig hoppers
Approximate Total points: 7000.
Lets see how we go :)
Here are the units awaiting attention.

Now that's a mighty horde :o. And somehow I still have the feeling that you'll finish before me!
-
I doubt it, i still have some warhawks for the woodelves to finish, a few pieces of siege kit plus a dwarf hold I am making.
That and 90 terminators and 25 stealers for space hulk. :'(
-
I am very excited to see close up of the orc savage boyz and goblin forest, when the time will be right!!
-
Well, I will pick up the glove and see if I can manage.... I guess I can grab parts of my painting gear when I am stuck in an hotel and spend time doing some units, instead of watching (pay)TV....
I did not see anything in the rules that prohibits me from starting with undercoated troops ?? (and if I do see it I will simply edit it out ;)), so I will dig out a box of troops that actualy even saw action already at an overseas event.... and IIRC they even squared off against Rick's greenskins ( <-- mine wont be green, I am going for the yellow horde of the Goblo Khan Heyou)
<insert a viable 2k Kislev list>
<insert picture of the combined army>

My camera sucks, but here is the ~1k points of OG I intend to paint.
2 Units Goblins
2 Units Orcs
4 Units Wolf riders
1 Unit Boar Boys
1 Unit Chariots
1 Unit Trolls
1 Giant (I wish I had a BOFA Storm Giant)
1 General on Wyvern
2 Heros, 1 G, 1O
1 Goblin Shaman
If I can get these done, I may work on a WMA ancients project
~C
-
The BOFA giant is superior to the standard ones.
I have just checked a place I know that sometimes has rare oop stuff in but they do not even have any BOFA stock in :(
Hope you happen upon one.
-
Ok then, you got me. I very seriously doubt that I'll be able to get one unit painted a week, but since my WMA EIR army is relatively compact it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
It is already partially painted, but its much less finished than my WM Empire army, which is basically two units of crossbows, a couple of halberdiers and a pair of cannons away from 2k, so going for that would be cheating a bit really...
I'll post a full list of units and some photos as and when I can grab a minute or two and the time to download the entire contents of a 2gig memory card to my Macbook. Needless to say there are a lot of units of Legions... Oh and all are at least undercoated already...
PS. pw, the one thing I'd definately change in your selection is putting your general on a Griffon. Give the Griffon to a hero armed with the SoM, otherwise you're going to risk losing the game every time you want to use the attacks and terror from the Griffon. Also it means that you can use the IMHO really nice general models in the Empire character pack...
-
I go with undeads, about 1k -1,5k.
This is a really challenge for me becaue I am in my few months before defending my PhD in chemestry, so I guess the next months will be quite difficult for me. But I will try to follow the challenge of TWMP.
My style of painting fluctuates a lot with my mood, I don't know why, but I have notice that during the years I had a brush in my hand. I used to paint 28mm and 1/72 scale since I discover 10mm, then all changes and now I am almost focus in this scale. Sometimes I am tempted with 6mm scale but by now I never start with this scale.
Enough for introducing myself, lets go to introduce the army: I have an undead army and I start painting it three months ago. I have already painted 1 skelleton infantry unit, 1 bow, 1 skull chukka, 1 chariots and two characters/markers. The pics are upload in jchaos project thread. But those units do not count in the TWMP.
The rest of the army in bare metal is that follows:
- 6 infantry (one tomb guards and other egyptian style undeads) completed 2/6
- 2 bows completed 2/2
- 2 funerary swarm insects (2 base per unit) 1/2 completed
- 1 chariots
- 2 cavalry completed 1/2
- 2 carrions
- 2 giants
- 1 dragon
- 1 markers for raise undead spell completed
- 1 hero on chariot completed
- 2 blisters of characters (some liches and characters undeterminate how many bases) completed 3/5
-
ask that everyone involved say a little about themselves and what they're planning to paint.
Okay, so I have been a fan of Warmaster since it was released. However, soon after I picked up the first armies I had a 'break' from wargaming for several years. When I got back into the hobby, I found that Warmaster had disappeared, and while there were plenty of folks who liked the game, few still played it. Undeterred by this, and the fact that the miniatures weren't available in Australasia, I began collecting armies from the US web store, starting with the army that I found most inspiring - the new Araby range.
Moving to Canberra in Australia (from New Zealand), I found a local player who was keen to get into some warmaster, and we began playing regularly, which has inspired me to start painting some of the armies I own. My long term goals are to run a large and spectacular warmaster demo game, to inspire some interest, and either run or attend a warmaster tournament (which may involve a fair chunk of travel).
Onto the Araby army. I will post more of my thoughts as to the army in due course, but the force I intend to paint for this project, is as follows:
4 x Spearmen
4 x Bowmen
2 x Guards
8 x Knights
3 x Desert Riders
2 x Camel Riders
1 x Elephants
2 x Magic Carpets
+ A full suite of Characters, including Djinn and Elephant Mount
As it stands right now, the army looks like this, but not for long! I'll be starting on the Spearmen momentarily...

All these pictures of fresh unpainted armies are getting me itching to get onto the online store to buy more toys. And that would be very stupid given that I've already got my Empire (2000 pts), Lizardmen (1500 pts), High Elves (1500 pts) and Orcs (500ish) all waiting for attention!
-
Got to say of the 3 official armies I don't have, I am VERY tempted by the araby range.
The sculpts look stunning and you very rarely see a painted one anywhere.
It will have to go on my very long wants list.
-
Ok, here's my part ... I'm also cheating bec. some of the stuff is already painted. I present a commission work - a part of an Empire army:
This includes:
2 Units Halberdiers (1 painted)
1 Unit Cannons (1 painted)
3 Units Knights (2 men painted)
3 Units Pistoliers
2 Units Flagellants
1 Wizard mounted on a War Altar
These are 1100 Pts ... 130 Pts already painted BUT GUYS, let's make a deal. I'll add some skavish power including:
2 Units Stormvermin
This adds another 110 Pts of painting.
Greetings from Austria
Peter
-
Glad to see more Empire troops joining ;D. That makes eight of us which is far better than I'd hoped.
-
That is getting better every moment!!
welcome swordmaster, I am eager to see your bare metal, but also the painted shinny elves
-
Greetings!
PW was very kind and allowed me to take part in the Tale. Thanks! :)
My contribution is 2000 point High Elves army and unfortunately I have some units painted already. My plan is to have following units painted:
General, 2 Mages and Hero on Dragon
4 units of Spearelves
4 units of Archers
4 units of Reavers
4 units of Silver Helms
2 "units" of Great Eagles
I will upload pictures of painted and unpainted miniatures as soon as possible (i.e. some time this week).
I started to collect, paint and play with Warmaster miniatures 6 years ago, but had a longer break in the meantime. I would like to use the opportunity to participate in this project to go back to the hobby properly. And start painting miniatures on regular basis. I will elaborate on painting scheme later, when I upload the pictures.
Cheers! :)
-
So who is going to be first to post?
Got 9 units of squigs almost done ;)
-
Well I'm not far off finishing my first three bases of halberdiers but I'm on holiday right now and forgot to bring any basing materials so they won't be ready to photograph until the weekend.
So, in the meantime, a couple of questions -
1) Can anyone think of a good transfer to use for the Empire banners? (I don't think there's a GW Empire one now but was there ever?) I"m guessing some of the 40K sheets will have skulls/crosses I could use.
2) More ambitious, I'm thinking that in the long term I'd like my army to be led by some of Sigmar's righteous Warrior priests and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a base model to make a Warmaster version of this chap:
-
I use ultramarine transfers for empire.
As for the model, try DaveC and a lot of pleading :)
-
I'm thinking that in the long term I'd like my army to be led by some of Sigmar's righteous Warrior priests and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a base model to make a Warmaster version of this chap:
Try DE character on foot model with a halberd from DE Character blister (need a lot of work but I can't find anything closer)
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check my SG catalogue when I get home as the DE hero doesn't show up on the GW online store. Having just rooted through what I've got with me I'm wondering if I might get away with bits from a flagellant and one of the armoured halberdiers... Certainly the flagellants are 'heroic scale' enough to be characters.
As for asking DaveC, well, maybe when the army is worth of support I'll go cap (and cash) in hand. For now though I don't think my half painted unit of halberdiers deserves that kind of help!
-
Hi guys!
Im throwing my lot into the mix now, im aiming for 2500pts of Dogs of War but I will start with the first 1000pts and go from there. Its going to be a slightly more shady version of dogs of war specialising in more low down races and instead of coming from Tilia it will mainly hang out in the badlands.
The list is:
1x Disreputable General
1x Wizard on Griffon (Will be some far sillier flying beat though)
4x Pikemen
2x Archers
2x Knights
1x Galloping guns
1x Birdmen
In the 2500pts list it will include a giant (Dogs of war should have a giant) and as I recently painted him up I will stick him in as my first weeks painting. So presenting Sergei the Giant!
Oh and PW for the Warrior Priest if you can get hold of any old Teutogen Gaurd from the empire range, one of them with a head swap would be perfect for the warrior priest. Sadly as they are now out of production they are more valuable than gold.
-
1) Can anyone think of a good transfer to use for the Empire banners?
I used transfers for medieval / renaissence heraldic banners. I think they fit well, usually have griffons, crowns, etc... What a mess! I can not find them to tell you the name of the manufacture. I bought them as a rest in a model shop, so the manufacturer could be quite old. But I am sure there are medieval/renaissence banners out there.
When I found them I will post the name. If it is needed I will make pics.
2) More ambitious, I'm thinking that in the long term I'd like my army to be led by some of Sigmar's righteous Warrior priests and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a base model to make a Warmaster version of this chap:
Well, the figure of the emperor (Karl Franz) has a big hammer and is shaved, but is raiding a horse. I Could fit well (I could make a pic if its needed).
So presenting Sergei the Giant!
I like it a lot the choice of the giant, it is full of dynamic and movment. I also like the 3 days stubble (does he shave himself with a doble handed sword? :P)
-
Greetings!
Here are some pictures of units which are already painted or almost finished. I apologise for poor quality of pictures. I will replace them as soon as I manage to take better ones. I think that yellow background colour comes from the use of not so strong lamps. I believe that when I try to take these pictures in day light they might be much better.

Army so far
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a22/Swordmaster_pl/Army-Painted.jpg)
I chose gold and blue as main colours. Even armour is silver-blue. The inspiration comes from the cover of old army book for Warhammer High Elves (4th edition I guess). The sign at shields and standards, according to some guide for elven rules, is associated with elven kingdom of Saphery - where the greatest elven mages can be found. It is also a place where White Tower, home to Swordmasters ;) is. Somehow I always liked to add some background to the armies I was building, even if a little childish it helped me to focus better and come up with some new ideas.
At the moment I am painting Phoenix Guard. Maybe not exactly matching the theme of Saphery, but I like the models. Gamewise it helps to distinguish between different units much easier.
I would appreciate any comments to the pictures, despite their poor quality. I find painting 10 mm miniatures very challenging, as I have to use completely different techniques I learned to succecfully paint their bigger cousins.
Cheers! :)
-
Nice to see so many additions!
Swordmaster: I love the color scheme! The execution was great as well.
Angor: Nice execution on Sergei. What figure is that? I despise the WM Giant and have opted for Bazuka for my O and G Giant. He's too high tech for a WM Giant, but I really want to paint him and he's about the right size ;D
I have managed to finish up the models, but not bases for a couple of units of Wolf Riders, I'll get the basing done this week, I hope.
Pictures will follow.
~C
-
Swordmaster, the colour scheme is impresive. I like it. Last week I was painting a unit of elves also in gold and blue (what a coincidence), but I stopped the painting to start with undeads. When I take out the camara I will post the strip in jchaos79 project or maybe here if you considered appropiate. (but I have to say that your figures looks too much brighter, shiny and impresive that what the paint I was doing)
Maybe you could scheme the steps of the painting and the colours names you are using.
good work
-
ahhh I re-read my message and my english stinks! I apologize, and if you don't undestand something do not hestitate in asking and I will rewrite my thoughts.
-
Chaos,
No worries on the English, your thoughts are conveyed, they may not be as precise as you'd like, but I can understand them completely!
~C
-
Sergei the Giant is an old warhammer ogre, quite puny compared to the current ones.
jchaos - you definatly type better english than I do spanish so dont worry about it.
Swordmaster - I really hope that you had those finished befor this started! If you have painted them since this has begun I must conceed my hat to you! They look great the colour scheme is really striking and makes a nice change from white elves!
How much are we looking to update each week?
-
How much are we looking to update each week?
Well, the guidelines say;
Participants should aim to paint one 'selection' from their army list per week
I'm aiming to have my first unit of spearmen based and photographed before the weekend, but I think we should note that the first unit of a new army (for those who aren't using an exisiting army) is the place to test your new paint scheme, and be sure that you want to replicate those colours a few hundred times, so there might be some consideration for that ;)
pw: wondering if anyone can suggest a base model to make a Warmaster version of this chap?
Also, the Grand Theogonist has the bald, empire priest thing going on.
-
:o I hope I am fast enough to paint one unit per week :o
-
Today's submission
11 units of Squigs.
2 units of Squig Hoppers

Got to be honest these were easy as they are just a yellow spray undercoat followed by ink washes, apart for the squig hoppers and the last 2 units.
I have prepped up my 6 units of boar riders (1 savage) and the spider riders.
On opening the spiders I realised I could get away with 3 to a base so I now have 4 of these to paint.
I am hoping to paint the last of my warg riders and some bofa goblins for the rest of the week as I am out of undercoat until I can get some in a couple of weeks so that might slow down my progress a bit :(
-
Man, your painting speed is adorable and its crazy that you get this great painting standard even though you're painting so fast.
I'm almost ashamed to present my first (far too dark) WIP from the stuff I've done this week until now:

I'm interested in joining in, hopefully I'm not too late. Been playing Warmaster off and on since it's release with my Tomb Kings and small High Elf force. This sounds like a great motivating opportunity for me to finally get my Empire army painted. It's only been sitting around in blisters since it's release in 2000..... :-[
Already a day behind so I'd better get moving. ;D
I'm going for a 2000 point army at this point and if I finish that before the end date I'll add more units.
5 - Halberdiers
2 - Handgunners
4 - Crossbowmen
2 - Flagellants
3 - Skirmishers
3 - Knights
1 - Knights of the White Wolf
2 - Pistoliers
1 - Hellblaster
2 - Cannon
1 - General
1 - Hero
1 - Hero on Griffon
2 - Wizard
The pile of blisters to paint.

Hi M4jumbo, not too late at all. What scheme will you be going with?
I think we should note that the first unit of a new army (for those who aren't using an exisiting army) is the place to test your new paint scheme, and be sure that you want to replicate those colours a few hundred times, so there might be some consideration for that ;)
Couldn't agree more. This is 'Introduction' week and as such posting completed units isn't expected though it is a source of delight so far. And for those of us who are afraid of the pace (not you asrael71 ;)) don't forget that characters/Warmachines count so you can be quite tactical about what you do when (I've just finished my halberdiers bar the basing and started a character for the following week during which time I'm also painting up some knights. So, if the knights don't get done I'll have a 'joker' to play!)
Thanks for all the ideas for my Warrior priest. I'll have to look into all of them and see what would work with my very unimpressive greenstuff skills.
Oh, and my oh my aren't the Skaven figures great. Seeing them makes me regret buying my Lizardmen a bit.
-
Great to see another painter joining us.
As PW said ignore me and the rate I post:) I go at these things hell for leather and then can't bear to paint for 3 months :-[
I always paint more towards the beginning of the week as we play from thursday onwards.
I really enjoyed painting my empire force so I am sure you will as well.
As for skaven over lizardmen PW, I don't know I love them both as they are both great armies to paint and play.
Now should I paint my wargs :-*
-
Welcome M4jumbo!
Azrael, the squigs looks really really good! It have to be sooo funny playing with that stuff!
Meister.Petz, your skaven looks great I still fascinated with skaven pictures because I never see the figures at my hand.
-
Has anyone else noticed the massive box of toys in m4jumbo's picture? :P Is that all Empire stuff!?
-
Only just got the kids to bed, so no painting tonight I'm afraid. I've decided to watch as much of 'The Two Towers' as I can before the wife moans about having to get up early and needing her sleep, etc... so as to at least keep my mind 'in the right frame' for painting. It is also I think the first time I've watched it on our 40" flatscreen, makes a change from a 12" laptop monitor whilst I'm painting...
I've also been somewhat distracted by the temptation of those lovely, lovely SH Terminators... So tempting, especially as there is a painting comp at my local store this weekend...
-
Next up a unit of Wolfrider, which I'll admit were painted previously. However, I do have two more units of WR that I simply need to get based, hahaha which were mostly finished this weekend.
and
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2608/3900851861_4084d641c9.jpg)
I suspect I'll have another unit of WR this week completed, that's the drawback to painting on sticks and then basing...
~C
Okay, clearly I need a lesson in posting images, because I can't freaking get it to work...
-
Thanks for the welcome, and thanks pw for putting this idea out there, it should be fun.
Has anyone else noticed the massive box of toys in m4jumbo's picture? Is that all Empire stuff!?
No, that poor overstuffed box is only partly filled with more Empire. There are also Orks, Dwarves, Chaos and the few straggler blisters remaining for my Tomb Kings. That's not including the other storage trays of more Orks, Dwarves, Chaos, Lizardmen and siege equipment. It's a daunting amount of lead, so I'm hoping this thread helps me plow through the units consistently and put more armies on the table.
As for which paint scheme I'll use for the Empire I'm still undecided. Nothing like coming into this prepared. :-\ I have been thinking about doing them as a Middenheim army, but just realized that my High Elves are done in the ever popular blue and white scheme already. I'd like the two armies to stand out from each other so I think I will have to go some other color scheme than Middenheim. I'm going through the Warhammer Armies books and looking at the different uniform colors to find one I will like and that will be quick to paint.
-
Nice to have you aboard, M4jumbo.
That is a rather daunting pile of pewter.
Hopefully, this helps you paint through it.
Nice pictures everyone, I'll have some better pics by the end of the week

Here are some of Rolgan's very nice wolf riders:

And here's how to post the pic direct into the thread.
1) Get the image URL (I used ctrl and mouse click on my mac which brings up lots of options including the important 'copy image location' - on a PC it's probably as simple as left clicking the image).
2) Paste that URL into the thread and surround it with (http://and)
And that's it. Hope that makes sense. I expect Flickr has an option that makes this easier (Photobucket does).
-
There are also Orks, Dwarves, Chaos and the few straggler blisters remaining for my Tomb Kings. That's not including the other storage trays of more Orks, Dwarves, Chaos, Lizardmen and siege equipment. It's a daunting amount of lead, so I'm hoping this thread helps me plow through the units consistently and put more armies on the table.
You have hours of fun there!!
pw: This weekend I will be on a trip (saturday to monday), so I try to upload my unit on friday or tuesday. Hope you understand

Of course, this is just a bit of fun! There are no penalties, only rewards.

Greetings!
I am so glad to see so many entries! They all look stunning so keep up with the good work! It really helped to regain my enthusiasm for painting. Thanks! :)
I am rather slow painter, especially when you consider the fact that the miniatures I have painted so far and pictures of which I have uploaded recently, are the result of a few years exeperiments. :-[ Real life and other temptations (even of the sort of other games systems) are not excuse. Don't worry then that I seem to have an advantage, fortunately it's not a competition. :)
When I first tried to paint warmaster miniatures I had to completely change my style of painting I use for warhammer miniatures. In the case of 28 mm scale I do not use metallic colours at all. For warmaster I wanted something equally nice in overall effect but at the same time no taking too much time to accomplish. That's why I forgot about blending and using many shades of the similar colour and decided to use metallics and washes instead.
I work with a single stripe at a time, no matter infantry or cavalry. I paint in the following order:
1. Cleaning and undercoating (prefer white over black, although at the moment I use black undercoat)
2. Applying basic colours i.e. ultramarines blue for clothes and standards, mithril silver for chainmail, spears and lances, burnished gold for shields, helmets and other pieces of armour, bubonic brown for spear and lance shafts. Cloaks of the command group are painted in worlock purple.
3. Applying washes: blue wash on chainmail and clothes, purple wash on cloaks, flesh wash on a few places of golden armour.
4. Second layer usually for clothes only
5. Details and corrections: it mainly requires work on shileds, where I first create some colour blending and then paint the rune.
6. Basing: I do it in stages. Basically I attach the stripe to the stand and glue some sand around it, leaving enough clean space for the second stripe but in a way that I do not have to add it in between when the second one is attached.
7. Sometimes I also add a layer of protective gloss varnish. Miniatures are more shiny but that is acceptable fof high Elves I think.
And to reasure you that I still have considerable work to do here is a picture of the bigger, unpainted part of the army. Please, note that there is one Phoenix Guard regiment missing (work in progress) and one unit of Reavers (haven't received them yet).
Cheers! :)

Swordmaster, Very very interesting your sequence of painting, and very useful too.
It takes my eyes that you say that "sometimes" uses varnish, am I right. For me varnishing figures is mandatory. I use Marabu Mattlack (Matt varnish), when it is shake it enough (I use to shake unitl my hand start to get tired, and then 30 seconds more with the other hand :P) you can apply it in big quantities and do not make the figure shiny at all. (specially care if the varnish has been long time without movement or the first time use, because the "mat stuff" could precipitate in the bottom and should be shake with the help of a spatula and then shake it to disolve in the solvent).
In my humble opinion your pics will upgrade a lot if you edite them with photoshop or something and makes a light auto balance or manually balance of the colour histogram adding blue to avoid the excess of yellow light.
I am looking forward to see those phoenix guard. I have never seen a close up of that figures ;D
-
@azrael71 - Holy Squiq Symphony Orchestra Batman :o Where did you harevest so may squigs from? And are they hard to move around due to size? Also, nice work, lifting the bar high for your first entry!
@Angor - Nice, dynamic giant.
@Meister.Petz - beautiful work, as ever. Looking forward to seeing the completed unit.
@Rolgan - Love the goblin work, look forward to seeing the WIP stuff.
@Swordmaster - Keep up the good work, looking forward to those phoenix guard.
@PW - how are things coming along?

Onto my entry for the week: Araby Spearmen - 1/4
Army Thoughts: Spearmen are the typical infantry speed-bump, and being forced to take 4 units of each spears and archers is not unreasonable in an army with so many cavalry choices. Ultimately, I imagine the most useful role for such troops is denying the enemy their break value. The save of 6+ simply acts to taunt the general.
Painting: These are some really nice miniatures. Simple, but with lots of character. I decided to use an unoriginal scheme for this part of my Araby army going with black and red, to contrast with the sand bases (I may try some blue and white later). The overall effect is pretty simple, but I'm very happy with how they came out.

And from the back

azrael71 - That is an incredible amount of squigs! Are those all from the character pack, How many did you buy? A firend of mine used to have a Red, yellow and green one for warmaster that were ment to act as traffic lights for the army... Sadly the Orcs tended to just sit around alot and get charged alot... I hope yours have better luck!
Rolgan - Some really nice wolves there friend, great colour scheme and I always like fast cavelry being mounted three to a base, it gives a much less uniformed look that is so much more appropriate for skirmishing cav. Are those the regular GW wolves or another companies? If they are GW's then I have definatly overlooked those models.
m4jumbo - I want a giant secret stash of warmaster in my house :-[
Pugwash - Wow! Those guys look awesome, I wouldnt worry if you dont think your colour scheme is original enough whent hey are painted so beautifully. Thats an awesome pallet you have the hats, shields spears, and bases really work well with the black, if something is likely to sway me to getting an araby army it will be yours. Oh and the banner is incredible!
As for my forces I have hit a little bit of a wall... Normally with armies I come up with cool ideas for character stands and then the army builds around that. For this army I pretty much wanted to use Pikemen and Heavy cav, Im left with a bit of a void for character ideas. I really like the Empire general with the table and was thinking of using him for my untrustworthy general but I want to make him a little more intersting... Maybe having the whole table mounted on the back of some wierd walking beast? (I get reminded of White Dwarf 225 where they had the warhammer dogs of war army list with a range of generals and there is a little sub paragraph on mounts for dogs of war generals are often exotic one example was a giant starfish! (Oh and dont fear my white dwarf knowledge isnt that in depth... 225 was sat next to the toilet in an old flat of mine and I must have read it cover to cover many times.)). So a riding beast? Good or bad idea?
I also need to find an intersting mount to represent my griffon. it can be anything really but im out of ideas too, if anyone has an exotic suggestion please say! I originally I my heart set on a Cockatrice but I cannot find one anywhere...
Great work with the Blogs guys they are all looking swell...
-
Allowing myself to momentarily slip into web-based gibberish: Pugwash+Araby = pure win! These are simply superb.
My two favourite things are the incredible banner and the pale turquoise feather which really works extremely well as an accent (or whatever the arty term is) for the unit. Have you thought about adding a little desert scrub to the bases? Perhaps just a little pale grass or some clump foliage? It might add a little more 'pop' to them on the table.
-
This plog is working great.
Some beautiful work is being done out there.
Just a shame we don't all live closer to each other as we could then organise a game ;)
I cannot view pics whilst at work so will comment later.
The squigs are from home made moulds and some from DaveC.
@Angor, I did a DOW army for WM ages ago. I used empire foot troop with the weapons clipped off and pikes from old glory glued on.
I made the birdmen using crossbowmen and card as for heroes I too was stumped and the only significant one was the paymaster general.
pics can be seen here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1756265).
pics of some of my other work are either on this forum or can be found in my signature over on warseer (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210185).
Hope they provide some inspiration.

Just a shame we don't all live closer to each other as we could then organise a game ;)
Well Ryanair have got some very cheap flights into Stanstead ATM for travel in October, November and December. My parents are flying in from Pisa at the end of October for our eldest daughter's 3rd birthday and the flights are only costing them €20 each return, but that's obviously with no checked luggage, etc...
The only real trouble is in sorting out a venue. I wonder if the guys at the Enfield club would be up for organising a one-day event again? Then of course there is the Safron Walden Tri-Wizard, a two-day WMF tourney in Essex. I can't remember the exact dates, but IIRC it's in November...
-
Thanks for the nice comments folks.
Just a shame we don't all live closer to each other as we could then organise a game
If anyone feels like springing for airfares from down-under I'd be happy to come and sample your hemisphere... ;)
Perhaps just a little pale grass or some clump foliage? It might add a little more 'pop' to them on the table
Yeah, I've been thinking about this. Not sure the standard GW scatter-flock will cut it. So, I might do some tests and post the pictures to get expert opinion from this thread :)
As for the banner, alas I cannot claim credit for it - I have used a standard from 'Little Big Men Studios'. I have a number of really amazing ones I want to use for this army, but hadn't counted on quite so many jagged banners - I may have to green-stuff a few to act as a canvas for the more colourful, awesome banners from the sheet.
-
@Pugwash: I bought some great "dry grass" from GaleForce9 ... you may be interested in it ... ah found it quite fast. I'm speaking about this:
If you dont want to use it "pure", then you can also mix it with the green GW-grass quite good ... it makes it look more real and not so much comic-like.
Greetings from Austria
Peter

Pugwash, doesn't matter where you get the banner, the result is astonish!!
I am just thinking in get some of them to the almoravid army (WMMedieval)

Well, seeing all of these images makes me feel bad that I've not shown anything. So, just to prove that I am on track here are some quick spy shots of what's on the paint station right now.
Halberdiers (for week one, should be based by the weekend. Paintwise they're almost finished. Apologies for the blurry picture):
Knights for week two (based coated):
Hero for week three (he's my joker to allow me to paint my crossbowmen for week four. He's all but done. I just need some green paint and some mithril silver for the highlights):
Crossbowmen and cannon crew (weeks four and five):
As you can see I'm planning ahead but I'm back at work tomorrow after a week off and my painting time pretty much dries up when the students return.
-
Greetings!
I am really impressed by the quality of painting. It will be very hard for me now to come up with something new, that stays true to the colour scheme but at the same time rises the level of my own painting. But I like a challange and I really appreciate the inspiration. :)
Cheers!
-
azrael71 - Yes I have seen you blog many times before... Why do you think I started Dogs of War ;D
pw - Those are some nice models (a little blurry) The red looks great! The hero looks awesome I might need to do a knight hero for my army now. I have to say seeing warmaster figures on warhammer bases makes me think of playing warhammer at warmaster scale... Maybe mounting a few troops per base, that would be an awesome looking game!
Does anyone on here have an old Cockatrice model?
-
Angor: Nop cockatric (I don't even what looks like), but Ral partha has a beatuful hipogriffon with a scale perfect to warmaster (could be difficult to find, but I think its woth trying)
Because I cannot upload my contribution on sunday and I have already finish the homwork I'm going to upload ot now.
It is a veteran unit of infantry, with a egyptian like style blue and red with bronze as metal. Because they are undead very tougher they are few in the unit. (well the real reason is because I do not have more figures like that, but the tale is nice). I though that this unit is going to represent a veterany feature in my army.
Infantry 1/6
-
I like the sparse bases, Jchaos, though I might throw in a pebble or two, or even some different colored flock to break the monotony of the ground itself.
-
Hi,
Angor this are pics of the hippogriffon, maybe is what you are searching for. If you are interested I could seek in a local store which still selling very very old ral partha stuff (rest from his warehaouse) and if I found another hipogriffon I could buy it and post to you by regular mail. I can not assure I will find it, but how knows?
Swordmaster, I have post my interrupted elf unit in Jchaos79 proyect
pw I post a pic of Karl Franz for your hero with hammer
hope this could help
-
I like the sparse bases, Jchaos, though I might throw in a pebble or two, or even some different colored flock to break the monotony of the ground itself.
Yep absolutly, a pebble could fit better. Even I thought something similar but I recognize that I was a little lazy when basing and decide to finish the unit. Thanks!
-
pw I post a pic of Karl Franz for your hero with hammer
Karl Franz is the bloke on the horse, the guy on foot waving a big mallet about is 'Valten', basically he may or may not be the reincarnation of Sigmar... I've got them laying around myself, on my 'to paint when I can', IoW most likely never list...
Also IIRC these figures are no longer available, they were part of the 'Storm of Chaos' set. A bit of a pain really, as I had wanted to pick up the 'bad guys' as well, I picked up my 'good guys' at a Euro GT many years ago...
As an aside the grand Theogonist is the 'top' Warrior Priest in the Empire, so you could just use him pretty much as-is, maybe without the War Altar. Maybe some of the Witch Hunter armies out there might help provide some further inspiration on the 'burning torches and pitchforks' front...
-
The work on this plog is excellent.
The araby and red & white empire are my current favourites.
Keep up the great work.
-
Wow, jchaos. This unit looks very nice :)
I very like the colors and this grass mixture is a nice idea.
But bad news: seems like I wont finish my unit stormvermin this week :(
-
@jchaos - thanks for the picture of Karl Franz. I wondered if he was in the Storm of Chaos character pack. I've been trying to get hold of the figures in that pack (well some of them) ever since I started collecting WM stuff but with no luck. I guess I'll just have to keep my eye on ebay and see if any come up.
-
Unfortunatly I don't have pack! I get this figure in a second hand buy mixed with other knights, as a complete surprise for me. Karl Franz and Valten are the only figures of Storm of Chaos that I have.
It is real pitty that GW do not go on with this discontinued pack.
I have in mind make a command base with karl Franz and behind him a representat of each important knight ( a blazing sun, panther, white wolf, kriesguard, etc...) but i will do it in a far future, now.... UNDEADS!!
-
Moving through this thread, looking at nice pictures, reading texts from motivatet painters inspires me even more than I expected! Can't wait to get home from work and paint my little ratties more and more.
Thanks to PW for this great idea :)
-
After deciding not to make the entire army a Middenheim army because they would blend in with my already blue and white High Elves, I hit the WFB army books to come up with a new plan. I still wanted my army to come from a Northern Empire Province so they could spend plenty of time fighting Chaos. And I wanted a color scheme that caught my eye and would be straight forward to paint.
I ended up choosing Ostland as the main contingent for my Empire army. Their black and white uniforms will hopefully be straight forward to paint and look pretty eye catching on the table top. Also one of the Empire army books shows them using a red bull's head symbol so I will incorporate a fair amount of red into their uniforms which should also look nice with the black and white.
Any one know about the availability of bull's head decals (perferably red) in a small enough scale for Warmaster banners?
Some primed units. Hey, it's a start.
Now all I have to do is paint a unit by the end of the week.
-
It's interesting that so many of you are either painting off the bases entirely, or with one strip on and the other off. I have found that doing this tends to result in the unit in question just enver getting finished...
Saying that though it is how I started to paint my EIR army, but I quickly based up the bulk of my infantry for an event and tried to get some units finished to a half-decent standard, if not based. Talking of which, I've located a USB lead so I should be able to get a couple of photos up somewhere over the weekend. I may as well take some photos of my existing half-finished Empire army whilst I'm at it... ;)
-
Probably my last update of the week (I paint more at the beginning and play towards the end).
4 Units of Bofa warg/wolf riders
(http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f364/mickmarriott/warmaster/Orc%20and%20Goblin/DSCN7558.jpg)
2 Units of WM Wolf riders
(http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f364/mickmarriott/warmaster/Orc%20and%20Goblin/DSCN7557.jpg)
So total painted this week is 19 Units.
Next week I hope to get my spider riders and boar riders done with a few units of bofa gobbos thrown in.
At this rate I might actually get the army done by December ;)
-
Not nineteen units from me. No, I'll offer a single unit and leave it at that!
Here are the first Halberdiers (I'll try and get a better picture soon and repost):
I'm not entirely happy with the transfer on the banner, it was a very old one that I picked up on ebay and it refused to go flat despite the application of plenty of microsol and microset. Still, it looks better than anything I could have painted on!
EDIT: that grass looks a bit longer than I'd like. I did trim it a little but I think the scissors will be coming out again!
-
Well I've figured out that on average if I ignore my usual TV, then at best I can get maybe 1 1/2 hours of 'figure time' each evening. So, realistically I'm only likely to get one unit painted every two weeks at best. But since I've only got about fifteen units including characters to do, it's still achievable by Xmas...
-
Nice, very nice...
-
These are very nice and easily equal to my 19 units.
-
pw: the unit looks awsome. God Job with the red paint! I think is one of most difficults colours (always going to pink or orange) but you have obtain a red with volumen (not flat). The transfer is beatuiful. Maybe black over red did not enhance the mighty griffon. In my humble opinion I suggest a banner red with a circle white in the back of the banner and over it the black griffon (just an opinion).
Azrael: Ufff 19 units! woaw
I particulary like the brown colour of the wargs ( Bofa miniatures) right back unit of the pic. I search for this colour when I tried to paint my wargs but I couldnt get it. Do you remember how did you obtain it?
-
The colour is quite easy.
Spray black, drybrush astronomican grey, overbrush snakebite leather.
-
Thanks for the kind comments. It was thinking of posting here that got me to finish them and to go a bit further than I would have otherwise have bothered with the banner and the base (that said you can't really see the 'rocks' I added and I'm not 100% on the banner!).
As for: These are very nice and easily equal to my 19 units.
It all depends on whether or not I can sustain this amount of energy/time for the rest of the army. I'd much much rather play with an army painted up as nicely as yours than an unpainted army with a single painted unit like mine! And I think we all know that once the models are viewed at arm's length both armies would look perfect. it's true at 28mm scale and I'd guess (not having played with painted 10mm) that it's even more the case with Warmaster.
Can I just say that I'm delighted with this 'Tale' so far. It's really helpful in keeping me painting and it's great to know that I'm not alone in painting Warmaster stuff. I'm really enjoying seeing everything and I'm certainly trying to improve my painting as a result of having to show it on here.
-
Jep, PW - these halberdiers are great! I hope you have enough patience to stay at this painting standard, because if the whole army looks like this, you'll never sell them again :D
-
Greetings!
I guess it's time for some new pictures. I managed to take some in a daylight. I also used InfranView to enhance the quality a little (thanks for suggestions about balancing RGB colours!). I am sure there is still a lot for me to learn, both in terms of taking pictures and enhancing their quality, but I believe they are better than the previous ones. First there is a repost of the old speaelves regiment, you can see "battle damage" on the bases and miniatures (I will try to find time during this tale to fix it).
Then this week entry of Phoenix Guard.
Front
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a22/Swordmaster_pl/PhoenixGuard3-front.jpg)
and back
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a22/Swordmaster_pl/PhoenixGuard3-back.jpg)
It's funny how things are difficult to paint when they were so easy just a few months ago. :) I would appreciate any comments and criticism as they help me enormously in improving my skills.
Thanks! :)
-
Wow great, I think those extreme highlights make very good even from ~50cm - 100cm distance. So they seem to be both: Extremely nice for near pictures and an awesome army when it's all painted.
Ok, but I also reached my goal this week: 1 (in words ONE) unit of Stormvermin:
(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/4866/stormvermin2mp.th.jpg) (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/stormvermin2mp.jpg/)
Hope you like it - see a whole-army picture in the [WM] MPetz's Skaven Army (http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=169.15) thread.
Greetings Peter

OK .... I did find the box of the mini's I will use for the painting log 8) which took some doing, I will post two pictures in a bit that show why ::)
Now I just need to wait for my camera's battery to load to start making pictures of the "basic" ingredients..... a slightly worrysome start, but I will get there. The one thing I am in doubt of now, is DO I take some material along on my trip which will last from early tomorrow to late wednesday.....
TROOP Type Attack Hits Armour Cmd Unit size Ppoint Min/max Special # units points

I am not totaly sure yet how I want to proceed with using either the Tsarina, and I am still figuring if I can work in one unit of bear(squigs) or maybe make those into something more Yeti-like...
-
Got my Week 1 unit finished today. As this is the first unit for this army, I think it took a bit longer than I hoped. But seeing as it was the first unit, it served as a test piece to figure out what colors I will be using on the rest of the army. Now that I have the colors chosen, the rest of the units should go faster.
Mustering for the camera are the Ostland Halberdiers of Wolfenburg East Barracks, always first to arrive for battle, and for the camera.
I was concerned that the black and white color scheme for Ostland might look a bit bland, but I'm happy with the results. First time using static grass for Warmaster. I have use flock in the past, but after seeing other people's pics on here where they used static grass, I decided to change to static grass as well.
-
Another week begins :o, and it's time to press on with the Araby spearmen! I hope to post a new pic and a basing question in a day or two. Some initial responses to recent posts (I'll try and do more responses for next post).
@m4jumbo - Looking very good, the black and white is strong! What's next?
@Meister.Petz - Lovely as ever!! That skaven army is getting huge! More rats this week?
@Swordmaster - The Phoenix guard look strong. A suggestion from me might be to use a few of the new(ish) GW washes, particulalry Badab black for weapon blades and armour.
@pw - Love the unit and the banner. It will look really strong on the tabletop methinks. Are the crossbows up next?
-
All I can do is echo Pugwash's comments here, some absolutely lovely stuff. The Ostermark colours look fantastic, I'm really impressed.
Next up for my Empire force should be either Knights or Cannons as the crossbows are taking forever (mainly because I've been distracted by wanting to paint cannons). You'll know if it's been a bad week when my Empire hero gets posted!
So, onto WEEK TWO!
-
Right, lets see if I can get this image posting lark sorted. First a picture of the whole Early Imperial Army, both partially painted and bare undercoat:
Ok, that seemed to work, now for some 'finished' skirmishers. Note that I do not intend to base the army until al the units are completed, to aid with basing consistency:
Now a couple of shots of my in-progress detail-ish painted unit of Legion. I am painting these individually on the coffee stirers that you can see at the back of the whole army shot, then glueing them onto bases when finished:
Here is a picture of the same unit in front, and my 'quick-paint' unit that I'm currently working on behind. It should give you a rough idea of difference in painting standards. I had wanted to paint the whole army to the same standard as the pure B&W unit, but I soon realised that if I did so I might never get a painted army onto the table...
And lastly here are a couple of shots of the unit that I'm working on at the moment. I had considered it 'finished', but I wasn't really happy leaving the lightening as just a white line, so I'm going back over the shields on the front rank of each stand and adding the zig-zag and arrow to the end. I'm being a lot less delicate with this than I would do on the units that I'm painting as individual models, as apart from anything else the brush won't allow me to do it on the rear rank at all, so there is no point in worrying about it, and by glueing them to the base prior to painting it forces me to paint to a lesser, but quicker standard than I otherwise would...
I should be able to finish these off by the end of the week, and maybe get started on finishing the next legion unit. I do try to do as much 'batch' painting as I can. Byt this I mean that I got all of the army undercoated, then touched up with black first. Then drybrushed everything with the metalic stage (lots of armour on these figures), and I try to re-do as much of the non-metalic areas on as many units as my sanity allows in one go. It then makes it easier to carry each forward, so often various units in my armies (or models in the case of non-WM armies) are at various painting stages... I also tend to switch between painting one thing and another frequently, so as to maintain some painting and keep things interesting...

PS, the army is as follows:
General
Legate (hero)
Six units of Legion. Two will be painted to a better standard than the rest, and most likely in a slightly different scheme to be able to use them as Elite Legion.
Three units of Auxillia
Two units of light cavalry
One unit of foot skirmishers
Various combos can make 1000pts, but really I could do with getting some more skirmishers, which I'll add at a later date as and when I buy some. I've also got some archers, but not enough to make a unit...

Greetings!
@m4jumbo - Your "monochromatic" unit looks great. I was really curious about the final effect. What was the biggest challenge?
@Meister.Petz - I am glad you finished your Stormvermin. The unit and the army looks outstanding. Would be great to play against such a horde. :)
@Pugwash - Thanks for suggestion! I am still using old washes and inks (incredible they can be used after so many years) but what is different about the new ones? I might try them on the second unit of Phoenix Guard I plan to paint.
I considered painting some cavalry this week but decided to finish infantry first. They seem to be easier to paint. Besides I have one more unit of spearelves to finish so I might do that now and keep my enthusiasm level high enough for completely new units during following weeks. What are you plans people?
Cheers! :)
-
@Pugwash: No, this week I try some Empire Knights.
@all: Thanks for your feedback. :)
@Stomm: :o great, I very like them and am looking forward to more pics.
Greetings from Austria

Assuming you're using the old blue-lid Armour Wash on weapons an armour, then no, I don't imagine the new washes are going to be much of a revelation. I detail my own use of washes etc. on a step-by-step guid on my blog; beyond that I don't have much advice to offer.
-
I rather like the new GW washes. From my experience they seem to be aimed at the tabletop painter and seem to have the potential to work a little like Army Painter type dips. They're very matt and dull paint quite a bit which is both a good and a bad thing. They're also pretty thick and tend to find the recesses nicely. One downside for speed-painting (or speed of painting) is that they dry rather slowly. As glazes they're pretty poor compared to the older inks but I don't think they're intended for that purpose really.
I think that the Black wash is superb over metals for a quick and realistic effect although it does dull the shine a little.

Indeed these are the washes I still use. I read your blog for some advice in "wash-ing". :) Thanks!
I must admit I rushed a little with Phoenix Guard, hence quite flat looking halberds and a little dirty cloaks. But as I said, I have another unit of them so I will definitely try to correct the mistakes I have made so far.
Cheers! :)
P.S. I cannot see Stomm's pictures. :(

A new week and a cracking start.
Managed to undercoat and drybrush 16 units of BOFA goblins and 4 units of Spider Riders.
Then ran out of undercoat :(
So no boar riders this week.
Here are the spider riders.

I don't know if any GW staff with any sway view these forums, but here is a heartfelt plea.
Please re-release these ALT models (same goes for most of the ALTS). I had to buy them from the other side of the planet. They are some of the best models I have ever painted in 10mm (and I have painted a few). Even released on a order before we commit type deal would do. I would definitely use these over goblin wolf riders.
I have a feeling that that will be a waste of time but nothing ventured nothing gained.
-
P.S. I cannot see Stomm's pictures. :(
Really? Do you need to have a Flickr account to be able to view photos on Flickr? If so then I'll need to look at getting them uploaded somewhere else...
-
BTW, nice work everyone, for one thing its really good to see plenty of nicely painted Empire Halberdiers. If I were a betting man, or at least if I hadn't promised the wife that I'd stop playing Blackjack, then I'd give you each maybe two units of them before your will to live gets sapped. They look really nice when painted well, but to paint them well takes an age...
-
I'd give you each maybe two units of them before your will to live gets sapped.
That's one more than needed for me! ;D
I'd planned to try to get a couple out of the way in the first few weeks but I just can't bring myself to do them yet. Hence the move to Crossbows, which turned into a move to knights, which eventually turned into a move to a pair of cannons... If it weren't for this thread I have a feeling I'd be starting a lot of stuff and finishing very little. As it is I'm mildly optimistic.
@azrael71: How on earth are you doing this :o I couldn't have basecoated those guys in three weeks let alone painted and based them. It's insania!
-
To all: beatuiful staff!
Azrael and swordmaster: it is great to see painted those discontinued units!! I wait ages to see them close and it is delightfull to see them painted as well.
Stomm: Welcome! When I accept the challenge I though to start a persian sasanid (1000 pts) army that I have bought, but finally I was trapped to the undeads enchant. I look forward to see more units of WMA. Which manufacture are your roman figures? Steve barber? they look awsome, and the shield scheme is a great idea, not use the common red/yellow. It is very strong.

The figures are indeed Steve Barber, I didn't see the point in buying more lesser quality figures when the extra that I'd get would only end up sitting in their zip-lock bags for years...
The black and white colour scheme is actually something of a joke at my own expense. I always seem to field armies that have more models either in bare metal or undercoat than painted, so I thought why not just paint them black anyway? Besides, I think that red Romans has been seriously overdone, and its nice to be able to call my army: "The Black Legion" and confuse any 40K players that are listening... Oh and I do eventually intend on reversing the colour scheme for the Veteran Legion units, which will make them stand out all the more on the table-top. I haven't quite decided what colour to go for with the Auxillia yet, although I am tempted to stick with black...
BTW the different colours on the shields and plumes, etc... are to help differentiate the units on the table. When painting a WM scale army that doesn't have something handy like the option of painting units in alternating half and quartered designs to differentiate units. I always ensure that as well as the primary colour scheme, I use a two-colour unit identification scheme on the details. This generally entails a brigade colour, and then a unit colour. In the case of my first unit it happens to be white and white... The unit I'm working on has a brigade colour of red, with a unit colour of yellow. The next unit after that will be red and white, then I will probably do the other two legion units in blue and white and blue and yellow. With the final 'well painted' unit earmarked for a white and yellow identification scheme.
I would be tempted to keep the entire army in black and white, merely altering the shield design details, were it not for the fact that it would then be impossible to differentiate units from the rear. I am painting the sword scabbards in the brigade and unit ID colours, seperated by a black line.
Actually what do you guys think? Should I stick with B&W throughout, but have different shield designs, possibly sticking with the bi-colour id system on the sword scabards? It might help to give the army as a whole a much more uniform visual look from the front...
-
Okay; time for my weekly contribution. More spears this week. The good news is that I've now got the scheme down pretty well, so I'm going into factory production mode for the next two units, and hope to knock them out shortly.
Spearmen 2/4

And, just to prove that I haven't recycled the other stands - the two together;
Finally, an experiment in basing. I originally painted the bases to resemble desert sands, but perhaps adding a little flock might make them look stronger. It has been suggested, using some light-brown scrub, but as I don't have any on hand, I thought I'd try some basic green scatter grass first. So, what do you think? Should I go with this, try darker flock, or go with lighter scrub?

I would add some "stones" and possibly cacti !

That looks pretty good, pugwash!
Pugwash: The basing: I personally like the plain sand. Or if you going into grass go for a darker one.
Stomm: The colour: Going into the same scheme to the whole army is a great temptation. But in my opinion I would go to differenciate the units with the colour shield scheme because it makes the game more easy.
-
Love the araby banners.
Very neat!
-
Pugwash:
I actually had the same sort of dilema with some 40K Praetorian Guard that I was and still am painting (my armies take decades to form...). I had originally based them with plain sand, no 'lumpy bits', and then painted it to look like sand or very dry earth. This made the base, and therefore the model look rather dull an uninteresting, so I added a bit of IIRC GW static grass, and then drybrushed it very lightly with bleached bone to dull it down a bit. Worked a treat, but any others that I put together and base up I will add more detail to the bases, the odd discarded lasgun cell, arm bone sticking out of the sand and so on...
I know that the sparcity of a 28-30mm base is much more apparent than on a 10mm or 6mm base, especially as there is just much less of the base itself on display. But even just a bit of static grass really helps to lift a base up a bit, just compare my unflocked flagellants, Nuln Halberdiers and KotBS to the rest of my WM army. They just don't look 'finished'...
jchaos79: It would be the same colours from the front, but the shield designs would be different enough to tell the units apart from the front. I would most likely stick with the bi-colour system for the sword scabards though, to aid rear identification. I think that I might try out a couple of different shield schemes on some of the individual models just to see what they look like, then paint them over or prep-up some more figures to replace them. I might also just paint the rest of the army without shield designs and then decide on what to do once its all finished. This will also allow me to get more units 'finished' for the sake of this exercise that much more quickly... ;)

Lex thats looks green... I mean, that look great!
I still intrigue in the look of the kislev goblinod... very original idea. Do you plan use the stats of kislev? the regular goblin list? or a own list?
-
Nice Troll conversions.
-
I will use the Kislev list. This is hardly an original idea, AFAIK the Happy Ent was the first to field green Kislev at a EuroGT with a Giant Squiggoth conversion to represent the warwagon. Currently my Warwagon is this:
which deploys as:
but I am not totaly sure I keep that version, I might create an actual wagon and use these:
@Carrington: those trolls are used to represent Bear mounted Shamans OR Shaman tht have cast the monster Bear spell
-
@Pugwash: those look great. I'd almost certainly add the grass. The stuff you've used looks good to me although I might be tempted to continue experimenting a little. Maybe some slightly bushier scrub material (rather than grass) might work? I'd also sacrifice realism for tabletop effect too, so the slightly bright look of the flock you've used (or GW grass) would be my choice. It might not replicate an actual desert but it really adds a bit of 'pop' to the stands. It also breaks up the transition from the base to the strip the models are based on rather nicely. Oh, and once again they look superb (my favourite is the unit with the blue banner I think).
@Lex: I see what you mean about the chaos! Mainly though I'm intrigued by what looks like a castle!
As for my week so far, it's not going well for the painting. An evening playing Space Hulk has put paid to tonight's efforts. It was fun though. If you've not yet tried the new rules I'd recommend them, the minor changes are all pretty entertaining.
-
Yeah, Chaos needs to be regulated, which mainly comes down too moving it around the room to a place it wont sit in the way (to much). The "castle" you see is an old Airfix model of a desert fortress that I have been using to create measurements for some Araby specific scenery. I am at the age that you find all sorts of stuff around the gaming Den that might be helpfull.
-
Okay, another test. My local store was out of straw type flock, so I tried something a little darker. Will probably look a little better when actually stuck down.
I do also like the idea of cactus and stones...
-
Now that you mention the squiggoth Lex, I forgot to mention I have one to prep for my orcs but it will have to wait until the rest of the army is completed.
-
Now that you mention the squiggoth Lex, I forgot to mention I have one to prep for my orcs but it will have to wait until the rest of the army is completed.
I am considering swapping out the current "warwagon" (or maybe just make that a second Warwagon) and make one pulled by a squigbeast. Also, although I was using Trolls as "bear"-equivalent, I am not totaly happy with that, so may end up either converting some stands to get a more shaggy appearance OR work from scratch and create some suitable furr-ball-squigs
-
@Lex: I think I'd try out the squig idea. While the purpose of most of what you've used is pretty obvious I think I'd keep forgetting about the trolls being bears. Maybe boars or wolves might be another option? If you decide on squigs there were some older 40K squigs that I think came back onto the online store that were really 'toothy' and much smaller than the current WHFB ones. If you need a picture of them I can take some of mine (I painted some up for a 'squigbowl' version of Blood Bowl).
-
I am planning on using my squig troops for the purpose of bears when I use this list.

would not bother with to much static grass ! I like what you did with the ledges !! just tidy up the sides and you's be fine (JMHO)

@Rolgan: Very nice, those wolves look great.
@Lex: I'm at work at the moment but here's a link to a picture on Stuff of Legends: http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2070orkruntz-m.htm (http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2070orkruntz-m.htm). I particularly like the one on the base on the left (Squig 4).

Rolgan
Loving those wolf riders, they are very characterful.
Just one query aren't they based as infantry and not cavalry?
-
Just one query aren't they based as infantry and not cavalry?
Rolgan they look beatuiful. when I first see them, they shock me. They look great but I do not know what was what makes them different from other stands of goblin raiders. And Azrael gives the clue.
I should try to base more cavalary in the long edge for WMA and WMM, because I liked the look!

Depending on its actual scale, but yeah that one would work real well ..

Here it goes my contribution of this second week: Undead Markers.
When we test the undead army with proxies we mess up the victory points because the Raise Undead spell had raisen some units and we did not be able to differenciate them. The excitment and the clash of the battle confuses us. Then we take care in the next battle, but was a little annoying reusing eliminated units and still remembering which has been reused with Raise Undead Spell. Then I decide that I want some markers to attach to the risen units during the battle to not mess up the victory points.
Because dwarfs, elves and empire will be the most probablies foes to undead in our games I have paint 3 elves fresh-deaths markers, one for dwarfs and other for empire. I also paint 3 generic markers (undead risen) to use with other armies or if it is needed more against the "good guys forces"
-
Its nice to find a use for those casualty counters that couldn't more easily be solved by just using a different coloured dice to the ones that your roll. But wouldn't it just be easier to paint up say around four or maybe five at most units of skeleton warriors (IIRC that is all that you can raise) in a slightly different scheme to the rest of your army?
-
But wouldn't it just be easier to paint up say around four or maybe five at most units of skeleton warriors (IIRC that is all that you can raise) in a slightly different scheme to the rest of your army?
Absolutely. That was the Deluxe option, but did it means much more effort of painting. So I desestimate the idea, but you has taken it again to my mind, and now I am thinking that could be an option for the future if I upgrade to 2k points, painting the next 1k in different colour. So I could use it as Death spell risen corpses in the 1k battles. But the though of upgrade the army to 2k is not in my actual to-do-list. Anyway it is a good observation. Thanks Stomm!
-
As I have a TK & a VC army with different basing schemes I just use skellies from the other army to represent raised units.
Not yet played against each other, then I would have issues :)
-
Okay I have been really preoccupied this week and havent been able to keep too much track of the progress everyone has been making. I am really impressed, this tale of warmaster painters is going very very well and we are only in week two!
Sorry for backtracking so much but there are several updates I have missed and couldnt resist commenting...
Meister.Petz - I have been painting skaven too recently and have to admit have sacrificed a little on detail to get some of them finished. I really regret this after seeing your beautifully painted stormvermin, the unit looks ace all ranked up! I hope you can maintain such a high level of painting accross the whole army!
m4jumbo - I have to admit I was skeptical about black and white empire, I was expecting it to look flat and lifeless... I was pleasently suprised by your efforts, there is just the right amount of coloured detail added to them to cure me of any worries I am really looking forward to seeing an entire army done!
Stomm - I have been painting Uruks recently and painting white hands on some of their shields almost drove me insane! How you managed to paint perfect designs on so many romans I will never know. You are a person of greater mental fortitue than I my friend.
azrael71 - Mick I will never understand how you manage to paint so many models in such a short amount of time. The spiders look great and by my reckoning every one is different! you certainly put us all to shame. I second your plea with games workshop to sell the alt models again I really wanted to do a savage orc and forest goblin army but I guess it will never happen. Oh and if they did just a limited run of the kislev bears I would definatly buy several packs.
Pugwash - Im not going to return to my ramblings about how great you spearmen look again. They are beautiful! I have to say though im not so convinved on the grass on the base though, its a little too green... if that makes sense? Maybe some brown grass or light desert grass might be better? Maybe... Oh I just scrolled down and saw the brown ones (im reading and writing at the same time... there are too many updates for me to remember them all in one sitting) The brown looks better but I think maybe a little too dark?
Lex - I want to see more pictures of everything! There are some really interesting looking models in that box of yours. I like the warwagon alot, I have always had a special place in my heart for trolls.
Rolgan - More excillent wolves! How did you do the bases as they look great and I would like to steal the look. Also how did you paint the grey wolves? I have been trying to paint some wargs of my own but they look very very bland...
jchaos79 - I have had opponents suffer the same problem you have. It can be hard to keep track of especially in 2000+ pts when there are alot of units being raised all over the place! Yours seems like a really good idea I may point a few undead players this way. Are they all made from scratch?
Okay And finally I will throw my tiny piece of work into the fray... I will try not to moan too much but they came out alot worse than I was hoping for.I think they may need alot of repainting as the ponys look a little wierd and messy and the crew dont look right either. I am posting them now just to get some feed back but I am definatly going to give them some attention and will repost them in the future.
Here are my golloping guns for the army, made from dwarf cannons and mules with a few random empire models and dwarf crewmembers.

-
Thanks for the kind words.
Yes every spider is different.
But I did sort of run out of inspiration half way through so if you don't like spots or strpies tough :)
As for your galloper guns may I suggest picking out a few details on the guns in a gold/copper/brass/bronze colour and then a quick wash over the details with devlan mud.
I find doing this lifts the appearance of the model, but does make it look less realistic.
-

Nop, the are from GW blister of death people. This are discontinued references, I think they go out in the year of Siege. The "generic" zombies/undeads raising from the graves are from pendraken.
I am posting them now just to get some feed back but I am definatly going to give them some attention and will repost them in the future.
I do not see them bad at all: Colour define, highlights, use of washes, bright realistic colour, nice displacement of the figures in the base, the grass is not over the figures.
If you are going to give it more attention, I will go for some extreme highlights in some zones (horse hair, head wear and cannon edges). If you feel that you need more work for the unit, then you could blend with lighter colours the horse harness and the wear/robes of the soldiers and then highlight. For the horse bodies I will go to a dark wash, then a mix (1:4) of the dark colour and white, and finally some highlights of white (Is this the kind of feedback you was searching for? )
Thats what I will do, but still thinking is not bad at all as it is....
-
Been a busy work week so other than priming some new units I haven’t gotten anything done. Off today though so I hope to get some painting done to catch up for week two.
Lots of posts since I checked in last, with already some great week 2 contributions. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the armies when they are finished.
Up next are halberdiers, halberdiers and more halberdiers.
Stomm, I’ll take that bet and raise you three units as I need to get 5 units painted for this 2000 point block. My goal is to knock off all the halberdiers in the first several weeks which will allow me to do some assembly line painting and also get them out of the way and move onto other units.
I really like the Wolf Riders that have been posted in groups of three per stand. I’ll definitely want to use that idea for when I get to my Orc & Gobbo army. Now if only I had some Spider Riders and could paint them as quickly as azrael71.
-
Alright, my bad I`ve had too many trials in the last week and have been negligent. Without any further ado...
Meister.Petz - I really appreciate the effort you put into your models, you show a consistent attention to detail that warms my heart.
m4jumbo - I too was skeptical about a black and white colour scheme, you`ve managed it brilliantly! Hopefully, you`ll take a break from Halbardiers and show us something else. I should also add, nice lead stash, makes me jealous.
Stomm - Your shields on the Romans inspire me! I honestly thought they were decals or transfers. An amazing commitment to getting it right.
azrael71 - Other than commenting that quantity has a quality all its own, I don`t have much comment. Your ability to `Get èr Done!` astounds me, I could never churn out the number or consistency that you are capable of.
Pugwash - I`m with Angor on this one, your Araby is a fine sight to behold. I like the basing but agree a more scorched grass look would be more effective. I will say that your scroll work on the banners is impressive.
Lex - Kudos to you on your conversions and alternate kislivite army. It is a spectacle and I can`t wait to see where you go with it.
Angor - I agree that the guns could use a different color metal to break up the gunmetal, That being said your attention to shield details on your WM-ME models humbles me, I hope to be able to replicate it when my Copplestones arrive.
jchaos79 - Not sure I commented on either of your submissions, so with respect to the Veterans, I love the basing and choice of colours. As for the markers, I think your execution was excellent and can appreciate why you would choose to do it the way you have. A further comment would be your basing which I happen to really like, what static grass did you use
Swordmaster - Your choice of OOP models makes me jealous, I got into 10mm late. I have to say that your models are simply brillant. You have a great sense of color and your delivery of top notch painting never fails to impress. I love the shields and cloaks.
I`m sure that I`ve left someone or bodies out, but I mean no disrespect.
As for the comments on my wolfriders:
Painting Grey:
1. Undercoat Black
2. Drybrush Charadon Grey
3. Drybrush Adeptus Battlegrey
4. Drybrush VMC Neutral Grey
5. Wash with Badab Black
6. Pick out details with VMC Neutral Grey
7. Go one step further with VMC Pale Greyblue
8. Go back over the model with VMC Black to put clean up details (particularly face and cheeks)
Basing:
1. Using a dull carpet knife cut wine cork
2. Using smooth pliers break off chunks of cork
3. Attach to base in whatever arrangement suits you. (I use the big chunks for main areas and the pieces broken off as well)
4. Attach models to base, this may mean cutting, or gouging gaps into the cork to fit the model.
5. Using PVA sand the base.
6. Paint the base ( I used scorched brown as models were painted first)
7. Ink the base with old Citadel brown Ink
8. The Stones are drybrushed Charadon Grey
9. Drybrush Adeptus Battlegrey
10. Add in some very dark blue lines I used RMC Breonne Blue.
11. Inkwash stones Badab Black. (not finished yet)
12 Drybrush sand Scorched Brown
13. Drybrush sand Snakebite leather or in My case Raw Sienna
14. Drybrush sand Vermin Brown
15. Inkwash Devlan Mud (Not stones)
16. Drybrush VMC Khaki Grey (Not stones, but don`t worry about over brushing)
17. Drybrush very lightly Rotten Flesh (Same as 16)
18. Dry brush stones VMC Neutral Grey
19. Add Woodland scenics coarse turf (Dark green)
As for my choice of basing style, I don`t mean to reopen old arguments, but I play my WM mostly according to WMA rules and skirmish cav are based to the long edge. I based them at a diagonal because I may end up having to play Straight WM rules and don`t want them looking too ridiculous.
Hope this helps and thanks for the motivation.

Pugwash, I like the flock on the left unit below. It definately looks like something you would find growing in an arid environment, a nice scrub brush/tumbleweed effect. And the coloring goes well with paint scheme you are using.

Smart idea on the diagonal basing. And you remind me that I should buy some better (real cork) wine.

Rolgan thanks for the detail instruction step by step. I surley try the wine cork, looks great (and also is a motivation to drink wine ;) just for the hobby)
For the basing I use a mix of three static grass, but the main component is Citadel scorched grass (order code 66-43). The other two component are from train static modelisim and unfortunatly I get rid of the original boxes. I will make a pic of the three component and also of the mixing bowl.
About using WMA for fantasy I also want to make some games. One project, now a little forgoten, is to make Glorantha (Fantasy setting) armies and use WMA to those armies. And also make some convertion of the Fantasy lists to WMA, but I have to test them first and make more games of WMA unitl I dare to make the glorantha lists or fantasy convertion (I have some ideas but needed to be test in battlefield). If there is no inconvenience, could you post somewhere or PM your lists? I am very interested in see how you have done them and maybe use them in the future.
The decision of basing the wolfs diagonal I think is a real good idea. Looking to the pics, this gives them a very dinamic (parthian shoot style) mood.
-
@Angor & Rolgan: Thx for your nice words to my miniatures :) Makes me quite proud of my little mice ;) ... and sure I will continue in this quality, bec. the whole army looks like this.
Greetings Peter
-
jchaos79 - That was exactly the kind of feedback I was after.
Rolgan - Thanks for the tips, I too am going to need to drink more wine... this hobby can be demanding!
I picked up some mythril silver to spruce up the cannons and the men are having some facial reconstrution. There waas some sounds advice on this site and I thank you guys again.

@Lex: Here's a picture of a badly painted squig next to my almost done Empire cannon crew:
Not a bad bear proxy. He's almost exactly the same height as an Empire soldier.

that would REALY be a great sollution ..... but where am I gonna get 10-12 of those.....

I've decided to paint a couple of B&W sample shield designs to help me decide whether to go down the B&W but varying shield design route, or to go as originally planned and vary detail colours to differentiate between units. I intend to try a couple more out before I settle on any, but I'm definately leaning towards the pure B&W sheild colour route as I think that it will have much more of a visual impact for the army as a whole.
Anyway, let me know what you think, designs and idea wise. And of course if you have any suggestions I'd be more than willing to try them out. I've been distracted by cleaning up some SH models this week, so overall progress has been very slow I'm afraid...
First up is my 'control' stand of finished B&W legion:
Then the stand with the same design, but different unit colours. Note that the shields aren't finished, I have yet to retouch the metal trim:
Now the first of my two samples, wings with lighting bolts:
And lastly wings with a sort of U shape and a pair of dots...:
Personally I'd actually quite like a combination of the two test designs, I like the wings in the later, and I think that the vertical lightning bolts would work well with it. Besides, the wings will be easier to replicated as its just painting a diagonal line between the corner of the shield boss and the corner of the shield, and then filling in-between, then repainting the semi-circle in black, painting the 'feather'-lines and adding the dot.
Oh and if anyone has any suggestions or pictoral references for design elements that are suitably 'Roman', but aren't wings or lightning bolts them please let me know... One thing that I do know is that any mention of specific colours are few and far between, and the 'Red Romans' thing is basically the product of Hollywood, but is just as 'accurate' as any other colour would be as far as we know...
Which of course is one of the reasons why my Romans have black shields...
Whilst I'm at it, here is a rear view of the currently 'finished' B&W shield stand. Whatever way I paint the shields this is how they will look from the rear, except not as well painted for all-bar two of the infantry units in the army. I will very likely still use alternating colours to differentiate units using the sword scabards as the area to receive this paint treatment:

@Stomm: I really like the Black Legion you're doing. They make a nice change from the classic red Romans and I'm sure when they're based the black will be really striking. Of the shield designs I'd go with the colour over the white although it's not me that has to paint them so it's easy to say!
If you're looking for pictures you might like http://www.roman-empire.net/ , there are quite a few images there that might help.
If you get tired of painting designs you could try Veni Vidi Vici's transfers: http://www.3vwargames.co.uk/10_ten.htm . I've not tried them but they look pretty nice.
-
Finally I've got my week two unit painted up. I thought I'd be showing a unit of knights but they're not quite ready so for this week here's my unit of cannons:
I really rather enjoyed painting these up, although working out how to get all three crewmen on the base was a bit tricky. I'm pretty sure that if this actually fired a couple of the little dudes would get wiped out!
-
Stomm: On your original post I didn't catch that the shield designs were hand painted. I thought they were part of the model that you painted. Wow, painting those on every shield takes dedication. Very nice.
I like the black and white shields, (says the guy painting the black and white Empire), but I think the colored shield designs to designate elite units is a good idea. It gives you some visual variety but still keeps the army looking unified as a whole.
Both the wing designs look great.
pw: Very nice looking cannons. I'm going to be painting some cannons soon and was also wondering how to get everything on the base and not look too crowded. Did you use a wash on the cannon?
-
Yes, the cannons are washes with neat Badab Black and then highlighted with the base silver again. Gold parts were washed with old GW brown ink.

Nice cannons you've got there, I note that you've gone for an iron or 'steel' cannon, rather than bronze. I went for bronze for my Reiklanders, and as and when I paint some Nuln or Averland artillery I'll also go for bronze to tie in with the general black and yellow scheme. Although I might be tempted to choose steel for Nuln, as black and silver also go together very well...
Oh and I had a look at the websites you suggested. I might try my hand at painting some white wolves down the sides of a shield, I can't think why that didn't occur to me. I also looked at the transfers, but I'd fell like I was cheating if I used them, and besides it wouldn't allow me to really differentiate the units well enough as there are only two or three legionary shield patterns...
As to positioning crew members, you should try putting the crew on a siege mangonel. Needless to say if it were real and it was fired, all of the crew of my mangonel wouldn't last very long...

Well, I've compromised on my painting standards for the current B&W unit, and have really compromised on my standards for most of the rest of the infantry in the army. But since the shields are just about the most prominent feature of most ancient armies, and especially Roman armies, IMHO if you're going to spend any 'extra' time and attention on an area, then the most 'bang for your buck' is to be found by doing as good a job on the shields as you can. You can paint the rest of the figure pretty roughly, but paint the shield well and no-one will notice that the rest of the model is painted in a sloppy manner, especially your opponent on the battlefield...
It's interesting that everyone who's commented on the colour vs monochrome decision I'm making has gone for the colour option, whilst I myself am almost certain to switch to monochrome throughout. Also interestingly IIRC Rick mentioned that it may have been the case that different units in Roman armies would have the same shield design, but possibly different background colours. The trouble is of course that there just isn't any evidence for the colours in the Roman army, the only mention of red is for the centurions, and of course purple for senators...
Oh and my intent is to reverse the B&W scheme for the elite 'Veteran Legion' units. IoW, white shields with black details...
pw: Very nice looking cannons. I'm going to be painting some cannons soon and was also wondering how to get everything on the base and not look too crowded.
Well, one easy answer is to have the cannon overhanging the front of the base. Since 90% of the time when you're contacted to the front the unit is probably on a hill, and therefore anything charging it will probably be falling down anyway, having the cannons sticking forward isn't really a problem IMHO and leaves more space at the back of the base for those gunpowder barrels, etc...
As an aside I've been tasked with removing the sealant from the showers and kitchen sink, and then reapplying some new sealant. And then re-fixing the door cover to the dishwasher this weekend. So even my efforts to finish cleaning up a squad of SH termies has suffered, never mind my ability to do any serious painting for this project. Oddly enough if the wife gets sent abroad with work again then I'll probably be able to spend more time painting, as I'll be better able to get the kids to bed earlier and then start painting straight away each night at around 8pm...
-

The distribution of the crew looks pretty. And the paint is wonderful pw. Looking forward to see those finish knights

Thanks jchaos79! :) I've just put the basing material on the knights so they should be ready to go by Wednesday. Now it's time to put some more time onto the unit of crossbowmen that I've been avoiding...

Another week, another unit of halberdiers. Not sick of them yet. ;) Just need to start getting more than one unit done per week. Made some good progress on a unit of Flagellants this week so should be able to get them done early in week three. Also looking to get anohter halberdier unit wrapped up and if I'm lucky, a unit of cannons.
Week two Halbediers.

Do you sell those? :P
Or are they from a different manufacturer?

Work in progress (3 week).
I found two moods or fashions in the undead army:
- Bronze age egyptian style
- Medieval european style
In warmaster setting the two moods are mixed together. I understand that Khemri and liches (egyptian style) are powerful, and european style are the deaths from empire raisen recently. But this is only flavour and is not too important for the game.
Anyway, I decide make two packs of command, one in old egypt khemri style to use in battles involving sand and desert games and the other more european medieval to use in forest and rivers games.
I am working in the european medieval command. The idea is make a Tomb king with a figure represnting The Death itself. For heros (liche priest) I am making The four Horsemen of Apocalipsys. I am thinking in using this stand as a liche in chariot, because the are a main christian icon of the End, they have enough importance of gaining +1 when combat and +10 cost points. How do you see this?
The four horsemen are: War, Death, Time, and the four guy I am not sure if it is Pestilence or Famine. Do you know the correct names of them?
I know that War is represnt in the christian iconography as a archer because the fear that have to the Parthian archers. I try to think in a conversion to make an archer skellie for War, but finally I decide that the chavalery banner form GW blister is so cool to make the war icon, that I am not going to put an archer.
Any comment, idea, suggestion is welcome before I base the figure (I will do it at the end of the week), because then will be too late.
I am also not to satisfied with the background colour of the banner of Time. First I tried black with grey highlights, but did not see right the sandclock, so I went to a lighter colour, prusian blue-white (1:2) mix thinner with water. Do you recomend me a dark background or a light colour background?. Thanks in advance.

I think they look great, 'The Death' is rather imposing! As for the banner I think I'd go with black to make the hourglass stand out better.
-

Isn't it: War, Death, Pestilence and Famine? I don't remember time being mentioned anywhere, but then my theology and knowledge of superstition can generally be described as 'derisive', and certainly not any more in-depth than reading Terry Pratchett or the odd fantasy novel, RP book, etc...
-
jchaos79: Cool idea for your undead heroes.
mspaetauf: The castle was made by a guy in the US. His web store, Kilroy Ind Ltd has been down for a while and I don't know that he is producing them any more.
-
pw: banner going to dark. check.
Stomm: I will rename the 4 horsemen.
Rolgan: here it is the grass that I use for basing. Sorry for the dealy.

Greetings!
Apologies for the late update. I had some problems with uploading new pictures. I used the opportunity in the week 2 to finish my second unit of spearelves so I could move towards more exciting parts of the project quicker. Here is the picture of the second unit:
Nothing new, with an exception of the command group. I like the idea of a commander on steed in the infantry unit. I wish I had more of these. I also tried to paint the rune on standard with no mettalic colours, the way I do it for warhammer miniatures, but it looks darker than I wanted.
This week I am painting my first reaver unit ever. The miniatures are great and detailed but I still try to paint them to match the overall scheme.
As to the work of others I am constantly impressed by your painting skills! Keep the good work coming! I really like all of the miniatures presented so it is a little bit difficult for me to discuss the way they are painted in more details.
Cheers! :)
-
@Swordmaster: I'm getting very jealous of all of you who have got your rank and file painted, I got distracted from painting them almost immediately! I think they're looking really nice so far. I'm particularly impressed with all the freehand runes! I wonder if a thin black wash (50/50 water/Badab Black) on the spear tips might give them a little more definition. Similarly I'd be tempted to try a flesh wash over the faces to see what it looks like. Having said all of that, I think the picture is flattening the colours a little (they look a little overexposed).
And now a plea to everyone! Tonight I think I'll finish (and post) my first unit of Knights and I'm planning the second one. Looking through my box of toys I've got a fair number of this knight (he comes in the hero set behind the sword-wielding knight):
I think it'd be nice to have a whole unit of them to act as Inner Circle Reiksguard. So far I have enough for two bases so I'm looking for around four more. Does anyone have any spare to trade? I've got a few Empire heroes spare (mainly the knight that comes in front of this one!) and maybe some other stuff if there's something you need.
-
pw I need to checkmy Empire box, but it is more than possible that I have 1 o 2 of those figures to trade.
-
@pw
Thanks for suggestions! I totally agree that faces need something extra. I didn't like the effect I have got so far though, hence a little flat look. I will try to experiment furhter and might come back to spearelves as soon as I get it right. And I finnaly resuplied myslef with static grass so expect to see it on the bases too!
As to the picture itself I am still learning and I will try to find more time for additional trials with time exposure as well as with different light sources. By the way, how do you guys take your pictures? How many and how powerful bulbs for example do you think is absolutely necessary? Or do you prefer to wait for a nice and sunny day and use the natural light? Do you zoom as close to the miniatures as possible, or do not get that close and simply crop the image later with any software you are using? In any case I would like to learn how to take these photos properly and efficiently, so that they are as close to reality as possible. Thanks!
-
I'm not the best photographer and my pictures so far on this forum have tended to be a little rushed. Nonetheless my process is:
1) I prefer natural light (although it's also important to avoid direct strong sunlight!)
2) If I can't wait for sunshine I use a daylight bulb which gives of a whiter light.
3) I use the macro setting on my camera and I don't zoom. I take pictures from about 30cms and crop the pictures once they're done.
4) I use a timer and a tripod (when I have time).
5) I use Photoshop Elements to tinker with the pictures a little. I'm not good at this and tend to just hit 'Auto Levels'.
6) Probably most importantly, I take about ten pictures for every one I use and bin all of the really awful ones!
I'm not sure I'm really the person to advise here and I'm looking reading everyone's advice too.
-
Well I used to take pictures of my models by laying them on a flatbed scanner, but that thing got thrown away years ago...
These days I use my digital camera on macro setting (nothing flashy, not an SLR or anything...), and take the photo from literally a few inches away, obviously taking many, many photos for each shot and then keeping only the best.
For the actual 'set' for my photos, I lay the models on white printer paper, and have some curving up behind them. I then place my daylight bulb as close the the models as I can, facing it towards the white paper backing so that at least some of the light bounces back, and then take the photos in the direction that the bulb is pointing if at all possible. This is also in a room that is IIRC lit by 6-8 40W GU10 halogen directional spotlights on a dimmer switch. So when the lights are turned up, it is quite nice and bright.
An easier alternative to daylight bulbs are white fluorescent bulbs or tubes. They give of a whiter light that incandescent bulbs, and anyway in the EU at least 100W incandescent bulbs have now been banned IIRC...
-

Maister.Petz makes great pics! he gave me some good advices about this issue http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=169.0
Here are some advices taking out of my experience:
- Put a bend sheet of paper. white sheet use to overexpose the photograph and the figures goes to be dark shadey, maybe a colour sheet could be better. The gold color used to be enhanced with a red background... I have never use this in figures, but in my work I used to take pics of golden objects and it works. Neutral grey is recommended. It is funny because I do not use it for taking my own figures pics, just take the pice of paper closer to me... too bad too lazy!
- Light is very important. The best: natural indirect light. If you only have artificial light, use white one, not the yellow dinner room light, or you should to enhance the blue colour with a software.
- The use of tripod and timer is highly recomended. pw uses. Again I only use it in my work, my pics are made at hand so the most of them are blur due to the vibration of my hand, not for focus. The less light you got, the more time the shutter had be open so the more probability the vibration causes a blur.
- Try to avoid flash. It "burns the figure colours, and make flat look.
- Always use Macro option. The figure should be in the center of the pic. All the compact cameras optics has geometric aberrations in the edges of the camara, so the edges do not get sharp. Forgot all you have about frame theory when shoot to a single unit for the gallery put it in the center of the image.
- Never use zoom. If you have tripod and timer you could use it. As much Zoom as much vibrations of your hand influence the pic. The point is get a sharp colour balance image. Nowdays the compact digitals cameras have good definition and lots of pixes, so you could enlarge and "cut" the figure with photoshop or something.
- Depth of field is so important in macros pics. Unfortunatly I only know how to manage it in the old reflex mechanical cameras, so I am lost in the "very-clever-automatic-robots-cameras". If it helps to increase the depth of field the shutter has to be close (not less than 5.6 or 8) so the velocity swiftness should go to long times (1/4 or 1/2 seconds).
Hope that helps or be useful! (in essence that is very close of what pw do)
But lets see how the rest make their pics!
-
Just to prove how little I know about photography, and more to the point just how little of my own advice I follow, here's a picture of my week three unit. Some knights photographed without natural light, without a tripod and without a timer:

Ooh nice, the armour in particular has come out very well...
-
pw I like the black lances. And still fascinated with the red colour you got
-
Thanks, I'm particularly pleased to hear that about the lances, it took me four attempts before I settled on black. Before that I tried red, dark brown, and light brown and none looked quite right. I might try red again on my Reiksguard when I track the figures down.
As for the red, it's Meister.Petz's recipe: Black undercoat, red gore basecoat, blood red highlight and it does work a treat. I think the highlights might look at little abrupt at any other scale (or genre) but for 10mm fantasy it seems perfect. Thanks again MP :).
-
Swordmaster: Another nice looking High Elf unit. I really like the way the standard came out. Looking foward to seeing pics of the whole army, should look sharp with that color scheme.
pw: Those Knights came out very nice. The red and black and white looks great and the armor really looks good. Makes me want to get working on my knights.
-
@Swordmaster: Very nice, what's next?
@pw: Loving those knights!!
@jchaos79: Your stuff is so creative! I really like the character of your work!
@Stomm : Very impressive, those neatly orderd legions are sure to have the barbarians quaking!
@m4jumbo: The Black and White is very strong. The neat finish really makes those halberdiers pop! I'll be interested to see your take on the knights!
@Rolgan: Very, very pretty wolves! What's next?
@Lex: Wow, that's a whole lot of army and a real painting challenge! I'm firmly tuned to your progress.
Thanks all for the feedback on the basing. I've taken the advice offered and made my decision now, and am happy with the results. Progress this week has been to finish two units of spearmen to knock these guys out. I'll need to get a few units ahead before all my stuff is boxed up for shipping across the ocean! Next unit already underway - Guards!

@Pugwash: That basing looks perfect - it manages to look both realistic and to give a nice tabletop 'pop' to the bases. And it hides the join between the bases and the strips really well. Superb. :P
And as I'm ever-critical (I tell myself it's helpful!), I wonder if painting one of the two blue banners a different colour might be an idea? (Well, it's certainly an idea, maybe not a good one). Seeing the four units together the different banner colours look great and having them all different might work well. Just a thought!
-

Actualy for ease of reference I would probably have elected to colour the turban-part of their helmets the same base-colour as their banner...... I often find it very harsh to keep track of units in the graveyard, so I will try to either give each unit a distinctive basing or colouration code OR I use a colourcode pattern on the trailing edge of the stands ......
-
Thanks for the feedback - all feedback is good! :)
The banner colour is pretty much dictated by the transfer arrangement I'm using. I'm looking at some fairly elaborate banners for the cavalry (after much greenstuff).
Good point Lex, I used to go out of my way to make each unit identifiable, but have since found that I have little difficulty determining dead units for break purposes without any particular indicators. Probably has to do with the brutality of our games where all cavalry units, or all infantry units, are extinguished in a single turn! In either event I suspect the spearmen, like my Empire haldberds, will only be fighting as a last resort, and will remain camped at the back of the deployment zone for the game. perhaps I should make them some tents... ;)

Well Here it goes the contribution of the third week:

Hey gang,
I will be off on a (well earned) vacation to Egypte from 1-10 till 9-10, limited access to mini's, paintbrushes, computers/internet. I may pop-in for a quick lookylooky, but my updates to the thread will restart again in the weekend of 17/18 october.
I do however have some good news... I was cleaning up my workspace and found a box of old Epic orks etc. this included some squigoths?? (I will post a picture later tonight) which will serve as the base model for my "bears"....
I may even decide to swap out the orc boar riders that now proxie the knights, and go wild to create those units from these models too .....
-
Greetings!
@pw - The knights look great, I like the contrast and limited use of colours.
@m4jumbo - Thanks! I was not sure about that banner, I will definitely try to improve it when I paint another infantry unit.
@pugwash - I like the spears. Especially when lined up in a 4-unit brigade in your gallery. I agree though, that two blue standards could be exchanged for one blue and any other colour of your choice. Just for some variety.
@jchaos79 - The idea of 4 horsemen and Death as characters for you army is brilliant!
Ok, I read your advice on taking photos and tried to implement the following:
1. Daylight - I definitely like it much better. However, too much sun is not good either, as it led to overexposure.
2. No zoom - I simply put my camera on tripod slightly closer. Side effect is that I can tak photo from another angle, showing a little bit more than just the front row.
3. More pictures with different settings - It does not take that long and really helps to pick the better picture, as there is plenty to compare to.
In general I think that the quality improved but I will try to experiment with different backgrounds as soon as I get the nice colours. All the things I have are greyish.
As to the week three entrance I have some reavers to present. It was an interesting experiment as they do not have much armour so I didn't know how they would fit in the overall theme. They proved to be easier to paint than I thought, especially with the fewer number of colours I used in the end. I also decided to paint horses in the same way for particular unit (as I plan to have 4 of them) for easy way to distinguish them on the table. As I mentioned before, it is my first unit of reavers ever.

There has been some nice work over the past few weeks.
RL kicked in last week so no post, but here are my first 4 units of bofa goblins

Hope to do 4 more this week.

Hi, thanx for the comments of the command,
Lex: enjoy your vacations and have fun in Egypt!
Azrael: wow! I really remember the 8 units of these little green guys that I paint (7goblins per strip), funny figures but enough for me... and you paint 4 in a week...wow. The like the shields, in wood and metal.
Swordmaster: very nice reavers (very effective), and picture too. I like the banner... is it just paper or paper with varnish or plastic?
-
Good job! Those guys look nice. I haven't even taken mine out of the Mail Order baggies yet.
If I could offer one bit of criticism: I'd ink, or wash the gold, it'll make it stand out more. I'd try chestnut ink, or gryphonne sepia if you're using Citadel, or an equivalent with another range.
-
@azrael71 - You're a machine. Very impressive!
@Swordmaster - Pictures very nice (miniatures too ;))! Another trick to help with the auto-levels is to print a sheet of blue gradient (easy to find via google) and use this as a backdrop, although other colours work fine too.
@jchaos79 - Very nice and characterful. You zoom in much closer than I'd be comforable with when you do your pictures :)
Another week, another unit! By my count this is week 4 and I'm happy to report I managed to get both units of Guards painted this week, which means I'm 2 units ahead of the challenge guidelines. I really need to be 4-6 units ahead before November, so the heat is on.
The Guards are awesome miniatures. Really, really fun to paint and very characterful. Pity they're so rubbish in the game, as it stands they'll probably only be used as a mirage unit for 2k games (70pts for a high elf spearmen whose 'special' rules only work when brigaded with other Guards??!! - would have been cool if they could inflict a wound in exchange for a command failure re-roll when brigaded with other infantry or something)... Perhaps they might be better in 4k or above games.... Of course if I can play Lex some time in a 'fluff appropriate game' then I'm sure they'll take the field ;)

@Everyone. Very nice stuff, I'm massively impressed to see so much painting going on. A question to you all: how long does it take you to paint a stand of infantry (a single base)? I'm wondering if I'm the world's slowest painter or if it's just that I get distracted very easily.
That said, I'll be basing up a unit of crossbowmen tonight and following Pugwash's lead I think I'll post pictures of a couple of 'small' units I've done (Steam Tank and General) to get ahead of the game. I was planning to save these for lean weeks but I'm keen to share so I'll just have to remind people of them if/when I fail to paint one week!
-
@jchaos79 - Very nice and characterful. You zoom in much closer than I'd be comforable with when you do your pictures :)
Thanks pugwash your guards seems really great! I will check the stats for these little dudes. And also thanks for the zoom comment I will try to adjust next time.
@how long does it take you to paint a stand of infantry (a single base)? I'm wondering if I'm the world's slowest painter or if it's just that I get distracted very easily.
I am sure your not. In my experience, as slow you paint the better result of the unit. The best advice that someone give about painting is not a technique matter, it was: Take your time, do not he harash, do the same but very slow, be patient. The paint improve doing the same!, so I think you are going in the right way.
I dont really know how long takes my paint a single base. I use to paint the whole unit at once, and do not check the time. Usually I paint at night after dinner, quite tired of the day, but enough funny to go on painting. I think I spend a couple of hours or three.
But when I try to do a good job I paint the figures (pendraken) or strips (GW, old glory) individually. Doing these I paint one or two strips or 6 /8 figures in a couple of hours. This makes me focus and slow paint with better results, and in 3 night sessions I have the unit painted.
I do not check the time, but sometimes I put a film to “hearing it†and paint session is approximate the length of the film, sometimes I hear a cd, and put it twice or three times… So I think a couple hours
Looking forward to see those Xbowmen!

Well here is the contribution of the 4th week,
Archers! naked to the bone, and in great numbers!

Okay, it's official I'm the guy who's not living up to the terms of the Tale.
I have painted and based one unit of Far Harad Half-Trolls that will either be used as ogres or trolls in my O & G list. However, there has not been an hour of sun in the morning or when I manage to sneak in from work so photos will have to wait until the weather breaks.
I have another unit of wolf riders painted ( from 2 weeks ago), but not based.
I am starting to see the point in basing and priming them all at once, but I paint to paint and play so rarely that "gaming" is an after thought. That being said an hour to two hours getting the basing right is probably not the most efficient use of my time.
So many updates and so many well painted models, it also makes me wonder why I spend so much time.
To answer pw, I suspect that depending on what I am painting (and whether or not basing time is included) it takes me a minimum of 6 hours to a maximum of 12 hours per unit. I just wish the results justified the effort...
~C
-
@Rolgan - your time per unit sounds close to what I imagine mine to be. Having painted for somewhere between 3 and 4 hours I've almost got the base coats finished on two strips of infantry. Another hour and they'll be done!
Poor weather has also halted photography (and varnishing/basing) on my Crossbowmen. Hopefully I'll have them ready to show tomorrow if the weather improves. But the better news is that my Empire get to take to the field of battle tomorrow against a friend's Dwarf army. 1700 points each and I've come up with a doubtless dreadful list which contains a bit of everything I fancy trying out. Having been given a really interesting set of suggestions on another thread here I decided that the best thing to do is to come up with my own army (it looks like there isn't an obvious 'cookie cutter' build unless it's going heavy on cavalry). I'll try to post a brief report once we've played.
-
Okay, it's official I'm the guy who's not living up to the terms of the Tale.
Well don't feel bad, you aren't alone, my week three contribution is a couple days late. Let's hope this is a forgiving crowd. :-[ Now if I can just get back on track for week 4 and onward.
Up this week, something other than halberdiers. The Flagellants of the Red Redemption have whipped themselves into a frenzy and have joined the forces of Ostland. These were a lot of fun to paint, so much detail, I love the fish hanging from one of the flagellants belt.

It has been discussed about banners and unit markings to keep track of which stands belong to which unit. I use small dots painted on the backs of the stands to mark the different units. I started using that system for my Epic armies and carried it over to Warmaster. Seems to work well to figure out who is with what unit.
-
Just realised I haven't replied to anyone's recent posts...
JChaos79: Oddly enough I think that the blue showing through the red on that banner looks very striking and rather effective. Was it a happy accident or intentional?
Swordmaster: I really would like to see your HE's up-close, I suspect that your photos still aren't doing them full justice. And on the subject of photos, the camera needs to be in between the light source and the target, otherwise you get what I think you have in your latest picture of Reavers which is a backlit photo, so a lot of the detail is lost as it just isn't lit...
azrael71: Do you do anything other than eat, sleep work and paint? Your output is quite simply astounding, and of a decent quality as well to boot... I wonder how we;; you'd cope with a HE army to paint though ;)
Pugwash: Very nice, have you thought of alternating turban and feather colours to differentiate units though? Whilst having the whole army looking exactly the same has a real visual 'punch' on the tabletop, it is a real pain in the backside when you've got a messy combat to sort out... Oh and I think that you've nailed the basing, just that little bit of sun-scorched grass flock just adds a bit of a different texture and interest to you base.
jchaos79: (again!), very nice, have you ever heard of the 'E Formation'? Its a very effective way of maximising the firepower of four units of archers. It can be quite deadly when used appropriately...
Rolgan: Don't worry, I've painted even less than you. I think so far only Lex hasn't shown any progress pictures of any kind really, but then he is 'on the road' so to speak... My excuse take the form of two little rug-rats and a wife that gets up for work at 5:30am. Needless to say she wasn't too pleased when I came to bed at about 1:20am after a painting session. I lost track of time and I was determined to finish the figure I was painting.
m4jumbo: Very nice, do you intend to paint each unit of flagellants radically differently? I've got one finished for my own Empire army and I'm still deciding how I'd like to paint my 2nd, if and when I ever get around to even gluing them to their base, or a coffee stirrer...
As to my own contribution for the week. Well, none so far, I'm not sure where the wife has put the camera. I've been painting little bits of units here and there, for example I drybrushed, inked and then did a final light drybrush to the armour areas on two coffee stirrers worth of legionaries (that's around four stands), painted the unit stand id numbers on the underside of some of my Empire Crossbowmen, painted the hands and faces of one of my stands of crossbowmen and then spent much of my time finishing the legionary model on one of my character stands.
I've now finished that single model, but now have to tackle the horse and rider that represents the actual leader himself. I've noticed that there is a nasty mould line that runs right through his face, so it's going to be tricky to compensate for that... Anyway, since we all seem to be talking about how many painting hours it takes to finish a stand, etc... I'll just chip in by saying that this one single figure has taken me at least three, maybe four hours of painting time to complete. Obviously some of that time might include taking time and therefore doing other painting whilst an ink wash dries (incidentally the new GW inks are IMHO bloody brilliant. They really help to neaten up drybrushed armour at this scale, not an easy task at all...), but the shield design alone must have taken at least an hour, if you take into account trying to get an even white from a black undercoat...
-

Thanks stomm, the blue was intentional, but induced by the first colour I gave the banner: light blue with those blue electic "rays". Then I repaint it again and decide to leave the dark blue lines.
About E formation I know is a sort of tricky-wierd way of making an archer brigade to get a lot of dice attack. And these formation do not break any rule. I have read something about it in this forum, I never use it, it doesnt seem to me with historical/fantasy flavour.
M4jumbo: those flagellant looks really good, men! Do you use Andrea Colours?
-
@jchaos79 - I like the skeletons. Very nice!
@m4jumbo - Wow! Your flagies came out really, really good! You did a lot more detail on yours than I did on mine, and particular kudos of the tiny writing!
how long does it take you to paint a stand of infantry (a single base)?
For me it depends. Often I'm working on several different painting projects, which means the warmaster guys take much longer, but at the moment I'm working only on the Araby. The next thing is having a scheme I'm happy with. My Dark Elf infantry have languished for ages because I can't get a shield design I'm happy with. With the Araby and Empire troops, however, I found a simplish scheme I'm happy with so it's all go. I'd usually be painting 2 units at a time when doing the block colours which takes a bit of time. The finer detail is more rewarding and my rate slows a little, but then I'm also motivated to get them based and 'signed off'. To answer the question, and break down my current work rate, I'd say about 2 evenings work per stand, once I have a scheme I'm happy with.
-
I don't know why but knowing that 2 evenings per stand isn't too ridiculous makes me feel better! I'm also massively inspired by all that's going on here, it's quite surreal to think that there are a bunch of guys I've never met who are also sitting painting of an evening. It's a shame we can't all meet up for a cup of tea, some cake and an evening of painting/gaming. Hopefully I'll get to the Winter Warmer in January and will catchh up with some of you there.
-
I think everyone is doing sterling work on their respective projects.
@Swordmaster - I am liking those reavers, I do like HE's.
@JChaos - the banners are great.
@Pugwash - Please stop with the araby, I am trying my utmost to resist ;)
@M4Jumbo - Again great banners, these make a big difference to a unit/army.
@pw - Those knights are sweet, the banner is outstanding.
I too struggled to do any painting last week.
So to make amends here are 4 more units of botfa goblins

@Stomm, yes I play loads of games of BB and spacehulk as well as a game of warmaster once a week.
In regards painting HE's how 7000 points worth sound ;)
To be honset they are some of my favourites to paint, might even take mine to the winter warmer :)
Here are some pics of them, amongst the first few armies I painted in 10mm.

I have not included my pre-sundering purple and white ones :)
-
:o :o :o How on Earth do you paint so fast? Even pre-Harry (my son) I'd have struggled to find time to paint anywhere near as much as you're producing and the quality really is top notch.
Sounds like you're going to the WW? If you've been before can you give me any idea about the timings? I'll likely have to go down and back in a day by train unless I can get my friend to paint up his Dwarf army in time (and get him to drive) so a lateish start (after ten) would be needed.
-
First match is around 9am and then 3 matches during the day, finish around 5.30pm.
It is a very light hearted affair and great fun.
As for speed, I blame magic wash ;)
Where abouts in the country are you based?
-

Are you coming down from 'up-North' then? As if you (or anyone else) is planning on going up from the South, especially London then I'd be interesting in sharing a lift, driving, or whatever. A lift would be preferable, as the wife gets grumpy if I naff off for the day with the car...
Alternatively, going up the night before, meeting up for a few drinks and a curry and staying in a hotel for the night is always an option, budgets allowing of course. I'd have to sell more of my old figures on ebay to justify a hotel for a one day event...
-
When painting the Flagellants and seeing the detail come out, I had to laugh at the ones with the open robes. I didn't think that with all their wailing and doom saying they would have time to work on perfecting their 6 pack abs. :D
Stomm: For the remaining unit of Flagellants in this 2000 point block I haven't quite determined how I will paint it. I may go with the same sort of thrown together look, mainly browns and greys for robes. Two other options were to either go with a more red-centric scheme for a hard core Red Redemption unit, or to go with white robes but with a brown wash to give them a dirty dishevelled look. Still debating.
JChaos79: For paints I am using mainly Vallejo and some GW.
azreal71: If 4 units of goblins is your version of struggling to do any painting last week, then I am truely embarassed at my glacially slow painting speed. ;D Very cool that you can crank out that many units so quickly and consistently.
-
@Stomm & azrael71: I'll be heading down to Nottingham from Manchester (or near enough). I'd love to make a weekend of it but I gave a feeling that I'd be pushing my luck a bit if I tried that. The train might be doable, the first one gets into Nottingham at 9.02 so with a bit of luck and a friendly opponent/organiser I might be able to take part. If all else fails I'll have to paint up a Dwarf army for Paul in return for a lift!
-
I can offer a lift from sheffield/rotherham.
-
As an aside, Ryanair flys from quite a few airports in Spain to East Midlands Airport (which is about 1/2 an hour by bus from Nottingham, if that...)... You'd almost certainly have to stay in a hotel, maybe for two nights, but you'd get to see WHW if you haven't done so already, just about the closest thing to the 'holiest of holies' for wargamers ;)

My week three contribution:
The "Half-Trolls" of Far Harad.
There was no sunshine, until this morning of course and my camera has been behaving wonky. I'll retake the photos soon.

Sorry for the over-exposure, I just the best I could with the tools at hand.
I tried green and then blue for a skin tone and preferred the blue.
Now to get week 4 based...
-
Rolgan, those are superb. I really like the rocks on the bases, are they slate? I wonder if they might benefit from a small amount of either static grass or some 'clump foliage' to give them a little more vibrancy? I'd imagine that a little pale green grass on the bases would set off the darker skin tones really nicely.
-
The figures have not been varnished, I'll add both grass and clump foliage after as the varnishing "Ruins it!"
~C
Oh and the rocks are simply more "wine cork".
-
Rolgan those Far harad Trolls looks good!
In my opinion I like the green one (first stand), but that does not mean that the blue one is bad at all.
So, your Orc army is build to be used in Middle Earth games?
-
Cork! Well I'll eat my hat. I had a feeling you'd be foliaging them up a bit. I got caught out by the awful weather this week which is why my Crossbows haven't been up yet. A bit of sneaky (and unadvisable) 'kitchen-varnishing' and I'm hoping they'll be good to go tomorrow!
-
I love those trolls, not too keen on the 2nd base, but other than that great work.
Got to say the weather has been great here this week, might even manage another 4 units of gobbos ;)
-
Here's my new stuff. I guess I'm 'banking' a few extra units here for when I get stuck painting more Halberdiers but I'm in the mood for sharing!
Crossbows:

The army so far:
My two questions:
1. Should I repaint the red hats brown?
2. Would Crossbowmen look better with more men per stand? Say ten?
In both cases I doubt that I can be bothered but these two things have been niggling at me for the last couple of days. Having seen Rolgan’s bases I’m also thinking I might try a little harder with the bases of the next unit.
-
I think the colours look good.
As for the crossbowmen, it is personal choice, but I like 8 to a satnd.
-
I like the steamtank!
I do not repaint the hats, they look very nice. And for the xbowmen, I think 8 per stand is good, well I base that in my GW crossbowmen, because the figures have different pose. When I base pendraken (only 1 or 2 poses) I try to put 10 per base.
-

First of all, nice job there on that thar painting...
Ok firstly, interesting choice of general, I use the very same figure as a hero. Do you not like the guys drinking around the map table and pointing etc?... Personally I think that it's one of the best bits in the Empire character pack...
Ok, now on to your questions:
1. Maybe, but not all. Whilst painting my Reiklanders, when confronted with hats, etc... I would paint them either brown, black (both leather or felt I guess), white (the reikland colour), or the brigade colour (so far just red or blue, although I'm sure eventually I'll start work on a third brigade of infantry...). So my suggestion would be to go for black, white, red, brown, and really I think you could do with some contrasting unit id colours. Maybe just painting the feathers white, then a small stripe of say black, blue or green in the middle would do the job without clashing or alternating from the overall red and white theme?
Anyway, I've got some photos to post. They're only a work-in-progress of the character I've been working on these last two or three nights. Just brought Mia back from the hospital as she had a nasty bump on her head on Tuesday and my wife finally entered 'take her to the hospital' panic mode. Needless to say after waiting for a few hours, seeing a nurse and a doctor they told us that her bump on the head was nothing to worry about, but they gave us some calpol for the nasty cold she's also got...
So anyway, if I can muster the energy between drinking my 'wind down' beer, and eating my very nice home grown edemame (even if some are a little too ripe), then I'll upload a pic or two. If not then tomorrow, being Friday I should be able to paint until quite late without the wife moaning too much...
-
Well, it's taken longer to wind down than I thought, so here are two rather bad photos of my character in-progress. So far I've only done the metal and highlights on the horse on the mounted, and therefore 'character' on the base. The legionary is however complete, except perhaps some minor touching up required on the metallic areas.
So really, this should give some impression of how I intend to eventually paint the elite Legion units, with the inverse black on white shield designs, as opposed to the white on black of the rest of the legions...

@Everyone: thanks for the comments. Following Stomm's suggestion about hats I like the idea of using hat colour to differntiate between brigades and feather colour between units. I was planning to give each unit a different feather colour (red, white, white with red stripe, red with white stripe) but I hadn't thought about linking the brigades with colours too. My difficulty there is knowing which units I'd be likely to brigade with each other. Do people tend to brigade all of their Crossbows together or to mix unit types in brigades?
@Stomm: I guess that hero is my general at the moment mainly because he's the only character figure I've got painted. I'm in two minds about the diorama of the general with his table. On the one hand it's so obvious that it's the general that it makes gaming sense and it is a fun piece too. On the other hand, no matter how often I tell myself the model is just there to represent the general I find it slightly disturbing that he moves his table around the battlefield! I think I might paint it up soon and see ho it looks. Certainly it'd save me explaining who the general is and I guess that's worth quite a bit in game.
I like the Romans. I kind of wish you weren't doing them as each time I see them I want to buy myself an army and while I know that I've no time to paint them, and no-one to play against, my willpower on these things is notoriously weak. Maybe I can have some as a treat for finishing the Empire!

Well, you could mount the table on wheels. Say an altar-less war altar.

Stomm: I like that inverse black/ white shield scheme for the elite units. That will stand out nicely. And again your hand painted shield designs are great.
Rolgan: Those half trolls are cool. The figures look like D&D Bugbears to me.
pw: More very nicely done Empire. The army is really looking good. I noticed you mixed flock clumps and static grass on your bases, I may have to use that idea. Looks good.

Greetings!
Apologies for the week long silence. :-[
@jchaos79 - the banner is just a piece of paper I glued to the pole and simply painted it. It is simple but works for me. I am tempted though to add something on them seeing how effective are Araby banners. :)
@steel rabit - Thanks! Actually I either add some wash or use 3 different shades of gold, which might not be that visible due to poor quality of pictures.
@pugwash - Indeed I started to think about this gradient background as I remember I saw it somwhere so hopefully for the next week photo I will have new backgroubd too.
@stomm - I try to take my photos in day light and after your suggestion I tried to position the camera so it has the window directly behind it. I am not sure though if it worked the way it should.
@azrael71 - Thanks! As anybody else here I am jealous that you are painting so fast and so nice at the same time. Somebody asked how long does it take others to paint a unit. I have to spend at least 6 hours per one as I am a slow painter. It is still much faster than I need for 28mm miniatures. :)
@pw - I like the look of the small army. Looking forward to see some more!
Ok, this week I have a second unit of reavers. To distinguish them better I used different variant of stripes (I know they look like clones then, but for game purposes it really helps), painted horses white (which I am not satisfied as they look kind of dirty) and used purple wash for feathers (which I should have painted in purple instead of white before I did that). So in general I am glad to have two of them painted, but I am not satisfied with the result I obtained for the second one. Let me know what you think.

This week I am painting another unit of archers.
