Title: [BFG] Noisy's Shipyards
Post by: NoisyAssassin on November 19, 2014, 04:52:37 AM
Hey all!

I'm getting back into BFG about 10 years after I dabbled with it in high school. Sadly, I never bought any models back in the day, which makes things a little trickier now. So, like any self-respecting modeling and conversion obsessed gamer, I decided to turn a mountain of bits into ships! Quite a bit of progress exists that doesn't have photographic evidence yet (including about 1K of painted 'Nids), but here's the start of a right proper orky fleet. WAAAAAAAGH!

The frameworks are laid:

The escorts evolve into completed Brutes

Kill Kroozer packs on a few pounds

And some pretty space bases for the 'Nids before they got heading marks. Sadly, I discovered that while the variety of colors looks good here, on a finished fleet I'm not a huge fan of the effect. Future fleets will get 1-2 nebula colors only.

Very orky work, and I really like the colourful bases as well.

The Kroozer looks excellent, very intimidating! Not 100% sure yet about those escorts, they for some reason remind me of flying mechanical serpents or something, must be their more bent form.

Now that's what an ork fleet is supposed to look like. I do echo the others that the escorts need some more nling to break up the snake/arm effect

I'd say I have to mirror the opinions of da rest of da krew.  Really nice builds, but da escorts need a bit more.  Nice foundation and I'll be sending me sneaky Gits to keep a close eye on ya.  If yer eva in Cali Town we could link up and give dem oomans a propra Waaaagh!

Wow, thanks everyone!

I didn't really see the flying snake effect on the Brutes until it was pointed out, and now I can't unsee it  :o Any suggestions on what they could get done to improve them?

@Gun_wun: funny you should say that, because I'm considering starting the search for a new job, and the Bay area is one of the top places I'd be looking at. Makes it even more tempting.

No more ork pics for now, although even more progress has been made (need natural light to take pictures of painted models, and daylight savings time conspires against having that after work). However, I DO have some WiP shots of a different fleet...tin cans! *ahem* I mean necrons.

Group shot (2 classes of escorts, a cruiser, and tombship)

And a time for a poll. I can't decide between doing the escorts with the weird creepy spine things hanging off of them or the versions without. Top row of each pic are the variants for one escort class, bottom row is the other class. So, opinions?

Ummmmm I’d likes ta see some side shots of da Ork escorts Boss.  Me thinking dat day needs uh kuttin and a flipping over.  Better fer smash-in but I’d likes ta see closer furst.  Da Bay has dis group of us Gits who throw dice and dat is a god fing! As fer dem Tin Cans.  Nice (taking out a small blue squiggly creature from pocket and holding it up affectionately)  I like Da Cruser n Tomb Ship.  As fer da Escorts we likes spines! (with a flip of the squig into its mouth.  A chomp, chomp and a long toothy smile)  Ribs too Boss…………………  What about some rib cages on dem too?
Title: Re: [BFG] Noisy's Shipyards

I would probably add spines to the bigger escorts but not the smaller ones. It's a bit hard to tell the difference between the two types from size alone with those bits.
Title: Re: [BFG] Noisy's Shipyards
Post by: Malika on November 22, 2014, 09:50:35 AM
Really loving those bigger Necron ships. Not fully sure yet about the escorts, they seem a bit too weedy, which doesn't work so well in BFG scale. I mean, these models are meant to represent ships that are about a kilometer long.

As for the Ork escorts, try to straighten them out a bit and add some stuff like a bridge and small turrets. They'll look more like ships rather than flying power claws.
Title: Re: [BFG] Noisy's Shipyards
Post by: marell le fou on November 24, 2014, 09:58:22 PM
I really like what and how you did your necrons, but i think they are a little bit too thin. It's ok for little ships, but the medium ones would need to be bigger i think. As said, it's hard to id each of them. Size is too much the same.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Ork escorts: you'll get to see some pics of them partially painted as is, but the flying power claws at least will likely get a bit more work. I do rather like the aesthetic of brutes being little more than flying smashy bits though. Seems too orky to get rid of the effect entirely.

Necron escorts: the designs of the bits making up the main hulls are actually quite different from each other, as are the spine compositions, just hard to see on bare plastic. That said, I tried out adding some rib cages to the jackal class and really like how they turned out. Will save pictures until they're painted. And now that I've full broken up the uniform crescent design of the fleet the scythe will get beefed up with a tail as well. Tomb ship is just going to get some extra layered plasticard and some fiddly-bits, but otherwise I like where it is at.

Now, onto some pictures!

First up, I had a mat show up in the mail and have been working on celestial phenomena. Should make games a LOT more visually appealing (I'm excited about this). More asteroids and dust clouds are in the works so I'll have enough to fill a whole table.

Then we're onto the orkses.

Some shots of the already shown brutes as well as terror ship and kill kroozer at their basic paint stages. Still need some basework, running lights, clan markings, thin antennae, and other details. And, as mentioned, some of the escorts might get some more light construction work.

Then there's the second brute skwadron. These have completed bases and running lights, so mostly looking at antennae and clan markings to do yet.

"Ensign! Ensign! Why is that asteroid shooting at us?"

And finally, my first attempt at clan marks (Deathskullz blue). Not super thrilled with the result, but we'll see. This is a ravager class.
(http://i1040.photobucket.com/albums/b404/Noisy_Assassin_777/BFG/DSC02842_zpsb34a4386.jpg)(http://i1040.photobucket.com/albums/b404/Noisy_Assassin_777/BFG/DSC02843_zpsf0597c87.jpg)

Cheers!
(and stay tuned, Tyranid pictures coming soon)

Looks good

I'll be interested to hear how the modelled planets go in play. I'm usually big on terrain building, but in BFG being able to sit on a planet can be pretty important, so I've avoided making them as anything but flat templates.

That is a good point. Guess I'll see how it goes! I've seen plenty of pictures of boards with fully modeled planets though, so they can't be that bad to use (hopefully).

And Tyranid time!

Dang Boss yer a machine!  Really nice stuff.  I like the furst pak of Brutes better than da second.  Da second wun looks a tad bit weedy fur me likings.  The color scheme it sweet like young squig meat.  As for the Klan colors, ummmm the jury is out.  Now I really can’t say much as me fleet has not seen a drop of paint.  I like what you’re doing and you make me want to pull out me paints.  Hopefully you figure it out so I can juz loot yer method!  As fur running lights I’m torn.  Part of me says no running lights as dey is Orks and what Ork in his right mind needs running lights?  Running lights is fur Oomans, see.  Hmmmmmmmm (scratching bald scared up dented head)  Part of me wants to just paint blacked out rusted Big Wagons.  Then again we will see when we get there.  Yer Bugs look really good.  Love the colors and overall feeling.  Keep dem coming Boss, keep dem coming!  Your inspiring me to build!

Oh and one more fing while I gotz ya Boss.  Those manta ray bug fings.  I think Da Red may be a little heavy on dare Gut Bags.  It's a hard contrast yet the rest of the colors are more how do ya say it smooth?  Perhaps dry brushing it up so it's more subtle.  Well unless da secret plan is ta make dem go fasta dat is.  I don't mean any disrespect Boss, really fine work ya gotz dare.  Just me two teef worth.  Ok den I'll get back to me own side of da Shak............... (shrugging shoulders with a toothy grin)

I like the design of your escorts- I may have to steal some of those ideas. I also like the use of actual shells in your bigger ships.

Do you ever have problems with you and your opponent knowing what is 'forward' on a tyranid ship?

Thanks mates!

@Geep: can't say that I've had any issues with that. They've all got pretty distinct fronts and backs, plus heading marks on the bases. Was there a configuration in particular that looked confusing?

@Gun_wun: yeah, the torpedo bugs ammo sacks are a little bold. I copied the color scheme directly from my 40K 'nid army, where there was a lot more red to go around, making it stand out less there. I messed around with trying something different on the ships and couldn't find anything I liked. As fer yer t'oughts on da green ladz, glad yer likin' what'cher seeing! Dem is right simple ta paint too: first ya drybrush wit sum Boltergun Metalz, den do a bit o' dabbin' wit Runelord Brass an' Skraag Brown. Finish it up wit a spot a Mithril Silver an' finally sum blackened bits round where da engines done got soot on everyfink. Now git on ter yer own ships now ya lazy squig-lover! We haz 'umies ta fight! *cracks whip*

Ya dat red takes away a bit.  Somefing more flesh/pinkish although if it’s matching yer 40K Gits then I understand.  But dang Boss dem some nice bugs I’z juz got-ta stop looking at dat red.  I may end up looting yer paint scheme fur me ships.  I really likes it.  As fur me own fleet Da Big Boss has had me building tanks n epic fings.  Although Da good news is I’ve been back on Da BFG side of Da Shak dis week.  Da Boss put a thrashing on some Ooman Gits a few weeks back and he is now wanting work done on Da Fleet.  He says he wants it good n proper.  Problem is see, I’z gotz lotz go-in on and have spread me self a bit thin.  Soon I throw down some “Squig Pak” stuff as seeing yer fleet is bringing out Da WAAAGH in me.  Who knows perhaps we will start a flow and more Gits will join us.

I've known for people to get the directions mixed up of cruisers and hive ships mainly. Even most official BFG photos seem about 50/50 on which end faces the enemy. I know the vassal BFG mod makes some choices in that area that confuse me.

The massiv ships still looks like shells a little bit too much for me, but the work is still impressive. I do love the smallest ships with tendrils.

Not dead! I got a new Chromebook to replace my laptop, which makes uploading pictures a little annoying. Been making quite a bit of progress in the meanwhile, but no pictures of most of it. However, I figured these were worth posting. Can't tell if I'm crazy or onto something, but here are some Eldar ships that I tossed together. Obviously not canonically what Eldar ships looks like, but they do seem like the sorts of ships that Eldar might build. And, even more obviously, only one of them is fully painted. Nightshade has orange wings, hemlock has pink (which I'm not quite happy with the shade of yet).

The hulls look like dark eldar rifles to me
Title: Re: [BFG] Noisy's Shipyards

Thanks mlkr!

Hull of the hemlock is indeed a Dark Eldar splinter rifle, hull of the other is a Dark Eldar blaster pistol. Wings are from the High Elf Noble kit (they're supposed to go on a helmet); unfortunately, there used to be LOTS of these in stock at the various bits sites I use, but now there are none to go around. I think I'm going to have to experiment with casting to get enough.

That Tyranid fleet looks really good..

I'm starting to build my own fleet, and I really like how you did the tendrils and krakens, can you explain how you did it or even show it in a youtube video?

Did you make any cruisers? and if from what?

and I hope you don't mind if I copy some of your tecniques.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! I'd love for others to build off of my ideas. The only price I ask is that you post pictures of the results.

Feeder tendrils: these are the insides of pipe cleaners. Just pull all the fluff off and you have great tendrils (also makes great rope for 28mm models). They're simply painted black with dots of Ice Blue.

Torpedo Krakens: these are built from a Carnifex tail (this bit) (http://www.hoardobits.com/), a 'gaunt Spinefist, and the ammo sac from one of the 'Nid guns (don't remember which).

Claw Krakens: these are simply from the Harpy/Hive Crone kit. No conversion necessary other than re-posing some of the tails.

Cruisers: I've got a picture up of a cruiser that I made from a shell, with flesh hooks as Bio-Plasma. I've got some others that I don't have pics of yet that are made from these shells (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c8/Turritella_communis_Turmschnecke.jpg). Idea is that each weapon loadout has a different shape to make them easy to tell apart.

I like those cruiser shells!! The lists I've made, even at 1.500 points I don't have more than 2 Hive ships and 2 cruisers.. just a TON of escorts..

I didn't realise it was a cruiser due to its large base.. THANK YOU for the link to hoard'o'bits.. god I have been looking a long time for a site like that !!

I will certainly post pictures once I get it build, I'm going to be working on it this weekend in between fantasy/40k games..
