Some WIP dwarf warrior test strips. Will see how the shields look in the morning!
-
Wow, great work on those shields. I hope you can keep the motivation up while doing that.
-
wow that is a serious painting.
Is the crow on the yellow banner in the back row a transfer? If not great free hand.
-
The bird on the flag! Ye gods, how did you do that?! VERY impressive!
-
Hi all,
The shields and banner are not freehanded. I've been working on some shield transfers / waterslide decals for the dwarf warrior shields because I didn't want them all just half one colour, half another or something extra simple.
I wanted the effect for some units (although some will be uniform) of Viking / Saxon warbands with individual shield designs.
Some of the designs I have drawn onto paper and scanned in (about 2p piece size is fine, and you can draw round them to get the shield shape!) and some are just captured from simple google image searches such as "viking shield design" or "Saxon Shield", "Dwarf designs" etc. It just takes a bit of photoshop or similar knowledge to get them all shrunk down to the right size.
I'll get all the designs onto decal paper soon but believe it or not these I just printed onto envelope label stickers to test the size was right! So all these are just carefully cut out with a pair of small nail scissors and stuck right onto the shields! I've found it best to add a little nuln oil wash into the edges to even them up.
The flag will be better with a proper decal because if you look properly at the flag you can see the edges of the sticker. Still takes a bit of brush work to blend it in.
-
I posted these elsewhere but for the sake of completeness on this thread. These were the first Warmaster unit I ever painted a few weeks back. Some dwarf thunderers.
-
Really like those. Very ambitious with the shields, but also great to go for individual colours for the warriors. Look forward to seeing more.
-
If you can track down a 1/8" hole punch that's exactly the size you need for yhe dwarf shields. They'll fit in there very snuggly.
Great theme and painting.
-
The transfers work perfectly, good point.
The banner sticker is only notice if you carefull search for the edge or you already know it. In a game no one will see it.
-
Such a cool unit! Great idea with the shields :)
-
Awesome stuff. The idea of attaching shield transfers to hundreds of dwarf warriors would fill me with dread!
Looks great though!!!!
Dave
-
Beautiful stuff!
-
These are absolutely brilliant - it's an ingenious idea.
-
Nice job.
One bad point : i think the colour of the guys and most important the aspect of the handgunners's flag is really modern. Looks like an american flag of the 18-19th. Makes the aspect very strange while the painting job is really nice.
Could you tell me where did you find viking transfer of this size ?! The viking raven banner one is really nice :)

Exactly :-) At first glance, I thought it's some American Civil War Confederate zouaves :-)
However, the warriors are amazing, especially the shields. Excellent!
-
Lol well there's a good reason for that...they are a warmaster version of these chaps. A slightly ACW zouave style bunch of Marauder thunderers. All the remainder will be suitably generic don't worry!
-
Ahhh that's brilliant! <3
-
A Warmaster replication from another scales. Which itself is an homage to historical gaming. What's not to like?!
-
Love them :)
-
Thanks guys - progress a little slow at the moment...I'm waiting for Amazon to send me a 1/8" hold punch as advised by someone here (thanks!) which should make cutting out the shields easier.
If anyone is interested in the shields, once I have finished developing the designs I can send you a PDF sheet of them to anyone who is interested. You'll just need to adjust them to the exact size you need with an art app.
-
Not much of an update but just based these two strips as I'm still trying to get used to basing at this scale. My ACW stuff has a simple and quick sand and noch job. But spent a bit more time on these dwarfs.
Any basing techniques and advice greatly appreciated.
I think the rear view really shows up the banner sticker but it's really not obvious on the tabletop.
-
Very nice. Really like the variety of colours and attention to detail.
-
So impressive! I use very fine wallplaster to even out the edges on the strips to the bases. After this is dried I glue on some pebbles, flock and tufts.
-
For trolls and ogres and the like I put in some extra work and glued cork/slate onto the bases, then figures on this and even everything out with wallplaster. Pebbles, flock and tufts and I have a nice rocky effect.
-
They look great, I think your bases are fine as-is. On my own bases I fill the stand/base gap with a very fine sand first.
Now that you've pointed it out, I do see the sticker edges clearly (though on table would be no issue). It may be worthwhile trying to go around the banner with thinned down 'liquid green stuff' (or similar thick-drying paint). It's my usual go-to thing for blending away small nicks and ledges.
-
Kinda sorta finished these at last (yet to see niggles allowing)...finished the shields with the nail scissors as the hole punch hasnt shown up yet!
Not sure what to tackle next...Maybe need to get a bit more small scale experience before I tackle those Hammerers!
-
Just rushed this out too. Hoping to have my WM stuff fight out a campaign to the original ME game using the later ME tiles.
Not sure why ME is not an SG but hopefully this is not off topic.
-
Looking good!
-
Def. not off topic - Mighty Empires or the 40k version were bsaically in all of our minds designed for Warmaster and Epic campaigns respectively.
-
I agree that looks great. Do you find you are still able to flip the tile to the alternate side, even with the forest flock?
-
Very relevant question geep. I took literally no time over the two ME tiles I've done. My clump foliage is too high but I'm sure I could have sieved out smaller clumps had I wanted to.
I've secured it with hob e tac so it's very flexible and squashy so when turned over the tile is a little raised. However a little pressure forces it down and when connected it's less noticeable and less problematic.
I can't imagive it would be a hard job to file down the wooded flock area if you really wanted to either to give yourself a bit more foliage room.
I have one set of the (fantasy) tiles and found a 3d printer who printed me 20 blank tiles (single sided) which I will model with putty and clay. But I'm always on the lookout for more tiles!!!
-
Not been neglecting the WM. FINALLY acquired a chaos dragon then cut it up to make it more of an action pose.
-
Wings...
-
It's an awkward POS isn't it? =-P
Did you pin it? Does it balance better?
-
Looking really good. Nice idea for conversion.
-
I'm not really a fan of any of the GW dragon designs, they all seem to be balancing on their tails. I much prefer what Alexey has done with the Polar Fox Wyverns, they are in much better positions IMHO. Hence me chopping and changing this one a bit.
The arms are not pinned just glued and sealed with green stuff, but I did pin the back leg and the wings would have joined the back in a much higher position where as I wanted them to look like the dragon was gliding into a ground level attack. So these have both been pinned to each other and then pinned to the dragon's back, then sculpted quite a lot of green stuff to cover up the sizeable gaps.
I had to cut about an inch and a half off the tail, so I've drilled into the main tail, inserted some pinning wire in there which I bent to make a bit of movement in the tail, I then built up rolled green stuff over the wire to make the tail.
SW - it does balance pretty well, I'm going to mount it on a Polar Fox clear base and to do so I've had to cut a chunk out of the dragon's belly. I did check the balance on the right style of base (now ruined by green stuff and superglue fingers!) but as I've ruined that one I've had to add some onto my last Polar Fox order!
-
Oh man, the one I had was so twisted, I had to pack the tail/base joint with green stuff.
The only GW dragon I don't like the look of is the zombie dragon, really, I just think they're a pain to put together.
-
Just a couple of WIPs. Chaos dragon after a spray and some oil washes...and some slayers who are coming along nice and quickly due to their universal skin and beard colour! More soon.
-
Oi! You better not be painting them up better than me, I won't stand for that. =-P
-
Slayers or dragon? Gulp....you may have to fight these boys one day so don't be a hater @stormwind!
Not going to colours at the weekend are you?
-
Ha ha, nah, they're beautiful! The more painted lead on the table the better, especially if it means more games around here.
I'm afraid I'm working so I can't come. I probably shouldn't go anyway as the last thing I need is to spend £80 on Infinity figures or £100 on scenery or £150 on some new pink elephant. =-P
-
Really nice work ! I like the colour you use.
-
The work and paint on the dragon is amazing, wow
-
Thanks for the kind words guys but most of the paint here is spray! Army painter "dragon red" for the top of the dragon and humbrol desert yellow for the underbelly!
Then a succession of oil washes over both with ocre and raw sienna on the bottom with aizarin and burnt umber for the top! Just spray and washes!
-
The results are truly aweinspiring .
-
As I have just bought an Albion army...it was either drop a fortune on fen beasts...or sculpt for the first time in my life!
Dolly on the far left is gonna be a wicker man fen beast.
-
Very nice fenbeasts.
I recommend not following your wicker-man sketch on the left too closely- or at least not for arms- he seems to be giving a friendly wave :p
-
He's saying "kill. Kill. Kill....ooh hello there Gerry...."
-
really like the look of the fen beasts .
-
OH WOOOOW !!
They are really great ! I especially like the left one. Any hope you cast them ?
-
NICE!
-
Hi Marell,
Sorry I didn't reply to your question. Truth is I know absolutely zero about casting and wouldn't know where to begin.
These are the first things I have ever sculpted in my life. If you know anything about casting or know how I would go about it let me know!
-
As my "Hello Gerry" wicker man wasn't cutting the mustard I thought I'd do a proper concept sketch before I set to work!
-
I've taken these press mouldings to use as all the little people and corpses trapped inside the wicker man fenbeast!
-
Oh wow you're going the whole hog on this one!
-
Well God knows how it's going to turn out. It'll be like my third ever sculpt!
-
Meant to post this here too!
-
And these...
-
Cannon.
-
Command...
-
An albion army WIP.
-
Some oldhammer buildings...
-
Your 6mm buildings look like they've got wayyyy fewer resin holes in than my 10mm buildings from the same manufacturer. :-X
-
It escape to me the wicker man project. Very original!
In which stage is it now?
-

Mate they've got a layer of tamiya primer on them too. But these are decidedly less holey than ones I got from baccus. I think baccus' ones are made by timecast just rebased.
Resin buildings are a bit hit and miss. I have ACW ones from Baccus with holes and medieval ones that are fine. At least on ACW stuff you can get away with them being bullet holes.

It's very much the same stage. My sculpted fen beasts are unpainted and the wicker man is still at the drawing stage although I have press-molded the skeleton bodies for inside the wicker man.

Some Albion tests. Just to prove I Live!!!

Great job !
Is the standard a sticker ?
-
Good work!
-
Some orcs most have you have probably already seen on Facebook!
