Title: another Warmonger commission
Post by: Dave on December 07, 2015, 08:07:33 PM
Warmonger is slightly in the black this year. Rather than pay taxes on it come next April, I decided to commission part of the next unit instead. Bob's going to be sculpting three Halberdier strips for me this month. Pics as I have them.

I'm hoping for a few more sales between now and next April so I can cover the rest of the unit before I do a KS for them. If that doesn't happen I'll either delay the KS or risk trying for a higher goal.

Would you consider pre orders for the halberdeirs to get them to a KS sooner? How much do you need to sell to get them out sooner?

Pre-orders are an option. Given what still needs to be sculpted (the biggest expense) I'd need 1,900 USD with a KS (roughly 210 units). Taking pre-orders instead of a KS I'd be able to do it at 90% of that (1,710 and 190 units).

PayPal allows for pre-orders, I just haven't investigated how to go about them. In a nut shell, someone pays and it gets put into a holding area. I get to withdraw it from that area the day before I ship. What happens if someone cancels their payment or I have to refund it, I'm not sure. I don't think there's much risk for the buyer, but I could be left holding miniatures that people backed out on. Not the worst problem for me, but I try to stay lean and liquid by keeping inventory low. There's also the problem of I get 50% of the cash I need, what then? Can I refund it all without penalty?

Of course, all that's if we do it on the up-and-up with PayPal. If someone were to send me a gift, with the understanding that I'd send them a gift of miniatures sometime in the next 6 months, that would be something to talk about.

All that being said though, every dollar I make selling the products I have goes towards getting the next one sculpted or some form of business overhead. So if you want them sooner, pimping them across the internet and to friends helps just as much.

Another thought on pre-orders is to use Celery (https://www.trycelery.com/). I still get hit with fees, but it's 2% and PayPal's 2.9% + $0.30 instead of Kickstarter's 10%.

The trade off there is the marketing (I'd be responsible for driving all sales to it, KS wouldn't be helping) and it's not well known like KS (so people might be put off). Is the 5% extra I'm paying KS worth that?

"If someone were to send me a gift, with the understanding that I'd send them a gift of miniatures sometime in the next 6 months"

That's kind of what I did when contributing to the Skeleton project.

Very exciting news!  If I don't get any Warmonger miniatures for Christmas, I will be buying some soon after.  Keep up the good work, and thank you!

This sounds great, I guess they'll look closer to the Elite Halberdiers than the strip ones, or closer to the Pikemen you've already done, in that sense.

I know this might not be an immediate thought but any ponderings  about some mercenaries.? e.g. Halflings  archers or militia or similar?

The odder stuff I'll likely stay away from. In order to recoupe costs and pay for another unit I need to sell at least 225 packs. AfterRthese the cav, arty and characters are next.

I think that Eureka's halflings are the only ones we're going to be getting any time soon!

@Big Red: Did you mean something that would fit the "marauder" slot in the DoW list? I kind of imagined using these halberdiers for that, myself.

Ya. My plan was these guys for swordsmen, and zwiehanders for marauders,

These look tempting.

Not that I need any more Halberdiers - but I said that about the xbows, and these look nicer.

The top left one, looks like he would make an ace Warden of the Tower of London, from Tudor times.

Once again, these are excellent and I'm always impressed by how efficiently you go from idea to delivery!

Like the crossbows, I don't need halberdiers at all and I'm really looking forward to some of your other planned miniatures. But also like the crossbows, I'll buy some anyway.

I'm egging on my friend Christoph to plan an Empire/DoW army so having basic troops available will be great.

Got some shots of the command strip from Bob:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N7_M6zJN2Lg/VtnFRGsX09I/AAAAAAAAazQ/BywYx6WEmwM/s640-Ic42/Image-1.jpg) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N7_M6zJN2Lg/VtnFRGsX09I/AAAAAAAAazQ/BywYx6WEmwM/s0-Ic42/Image-1.jpg)

These were meant to be based facing the narrow edge of the stip (one behind the other) so the standard won't work as is. I've asked Bob to shelf the standard for now (saving it for a command pack down the road) and sculpt another standard that'll work when facing the narrow edge. The fifer is likely going to get a helmet too.

I expect I'll commission the last eight sculpts in April, and will likely do the Kickstarter for them then too.

Looks really good.

If I'm being picky, The head of the banner bearer perhaps looks a little small - it may be the close fitting plain helmet, but it doesn't look quite tall enough. There was one of the Zweihander chaps who had this too.

I'll take a look when they get here to see how it measures up. I'm not too worried on the height thing, there's 1mm of variance between most of the figs so far.

Really great progress.

How close are we to Halberdiers at this point?  As soon as they're done I'll post them on my local forum.  My friend Christoph wants an Empire army, I really want to get him to buy of proxies from you!

Sorry, not the comparative height of the figures, just the size of the top part of his head- it looks a bit small. It may just be the visual effective of a tight fitting helmet.

Ah, it might be compounded by the fact that the images are 800-1000% bigger than the figures. It it's noticeable in-the-putty I can bulk it up before casting.

Just to throw something into the figure size discussion - could I suggest a drummer boy for the musician if any more infantry units are planned?
Title: Re: another Warmonger commission
Post by: Dave on March 10, 2016, 08:06:41 PM
I'm planning on doing one more banner/musician infantry strip (for the command pack) and that will have a drummer on it.

If you back the KS and would like the drummer strip from the Zweihander pack instead of the new fifer strip just let me know. If I have extras (probably have a few) I can swap them out for you.

Looking good. Is it possible to order multiples of just the banner and musician? Aligned the way they are means they'd fit the previous hand gunners and crossbowmen too.
