Title: Facing for flying movement.
Post by: azrael71 on October 01, 2009, 09:37:45 PM
This is one I have always struggled with.
If a flyer moves and lands, say behind an enemy unit.
Can it choose it's facing when it ends it's move or must it face the way in which it moved?

In my opinion, or the way we do it:

If the flyer consume his max movement, he land facing the direction of the fly.
If the flyer has more movement when he land, he can rotate.

I would agree 100% with jchaos79!

When moving no part of the base may exceed the unit's movement rate, this holds true enough for flyers as it does for any other unit. So if it has the movement to perform a little jig on the spot after its move, then a flyer can indeed rotate if it wishes...

Are you all sure ?
See warmaster living Rulebook errata, page 5. "No stand can change orientation along their way"

That just applies to the "home back" move.

Yes   :-\  Didn't understand the question correctly. Sorry.

Every unit/stand  may turn freely. Flyers are not an exception.
See WLRulebook, pge 21, first paragraph.

Thanks everyone.
That has sorted out a very old issue for me.

The bloke who 'taught' me never had flyers in his army so basically made my flyers useless by enforcing the extra order to turn them.
But I see it applies to all troops, this now changes how we play drastically, for the better :)

Just for the record:

do the math if you want to stay in the bounds of the "no part of the stand may move more then the maximum allowed movement distance". (using the basic formula to calculate radial movement = 2*pi*radius)

- rotate on the centre of the stand. radius = 2cm, 90 degrees rotation --> 3.14 cm movement 180 degrees --> 6.28
- rotate on a cornerpoint of a stand. radius = 4cm, 90 degrees rotation --> 6.28 cm movement 180 degrees --> 12.56

there is NO such thing as a little jig in a game that allows pre-measurement AND restricts maximum allowed movement of ANY point of a stand...

that said; in general we round to:
centre: upto 45 / 1.5 cm upto 90 /3cm etc
which is doubled for rotation around a cornerpoint
