Title: [BFG] 3D Printed Grey Knight Fleet Project (Small Craft Update!)
Post by: MetalCoreKnight on January 08, 2016, 05:16:27 PM
May Update!

I was housesitting for a couple of weeks and did some painting finally! Check it out here!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long story short, I've always loved the idea of BFG, Grey Knights and Thus loved Forge World's Grey Knight Strike Cruiser (http://i.imgur.com/FfmcLwO.jpg) so when I found mine in a box of bitz during my move 2 months ago sparked the idea for a project.

See, about 6 years ago I made a couple of very particular 3D Models (http://i.imgur.com/Efz8iJF.jpg)(Large Image).

Of course back then there wasn't any kind of end-goal in mind, I just made models because it's just what I did. But over the last year I've been experimenting (http://imgur.com/a/DMSFA#1) with 3D Printing and it's been going well but the projects I've been doing have been pretty simple so I figured it was time to kick it up a notch, BAM!

So I go back, dredge up those old, shameful models and completely re-modeled them, broke them up into a selection of parts in a logical manner, got them all sprue-d up and eventually got them sent off to the printers.

Now, a Month after I started on this project the first fruits of my labor have arrived;

Strike Cruiser (http://i.imgur.com/xQKm5j4.jpg)

Strike Cruiser Text (http://i.imgur.com/pV2pb1h.jpg)
"Let us be His Shield" and "I am the Spear in His hand"

Gladius Frigate (http://i.imgur.com/mPS7xLG.jpg)

WIP Hunter Destroyer (http://i.imgur.com/nIjfeXt.jpg)

Still a long way to go but so far so good!

Looking very good. I'd like to see them full assembled and with some paint (clear plastic makes it a little hard to see details).

Yeah, but this is the first time I've ordered in this material so I'm taking my time with these pieces to make sure I get them right, I've also already noticed a couple of small changes I need to make to my 3D models, hopefully over teh next week I can figure all this out! xD

Is this Frosted Ultra Detail or Frosted Extreme Detail?

Is this Frosted Ultra Detail or Frosted Extreme Detail?
Just Frosted Ultra Detail. Given that the model is like 80% horizontal and vertical flat surfaces I didn't think the extra fidelity from FED would really help the print at all but still cost like 50% more! xD

A good example of what we will see in the years to come. And for my part i think someday will arrive a 3D color printer, and we will be able to print completly coloured armies with all desired options directly in our room...

Using one of the Gladiuses as a test subject for cleaning and paint this material and so cut everything off the sprue and tried a test fit. Results; everything is perfect (http://i.imgur.com/T9J4ADf.jpg).....so far! xD

Thanks! Still a ways to go though! xD I did just finish fixing up my model for the Hunter Destroyer (http://i.imgur.com/zU6tsg0.jpg), my original model ended up 33% too big so I had to shrink it down. I'm a little worried about this one because of the way I broke it up and having to include a slot for the stem left for some parts with very thin areas and the material is pretty brittle compared to GW plastic some might be used to.

Luckily it comes in a four pack so I'll have a few to experiment with!

All that's left now is the Nova and the core fleet will be set, I want to try and do a Battle Barge but that'll be a very complex project to tackle so that it's also not super expensive due to the way Shapeway's PRicing works out.

I long to see it painted to appreciate details.

Me too! xD I have some Vallejo Primer so I'll try brushing it on with one of the Gladius' just so see how that turns out, I'll probably do the second Gladius and the Cruiser over the weekend with my Airbrush to try that out and brush up and odd spots.

In other news, I cleaned the second Gladius and Strike Cruiser before work and once I got back I figured it was the perfect time to do a dry fit! (http://i.imgur.com/YLPc2z4.jpg) Still not a great picture because of the material and all that but it'll have to do for now.

Thanks again everyone for the kind comments, my own gains from this project are great and all but it's the sharing of it that really makes me feel great about this!

Making it look good is the easy part, making it affordable will be the hard part! xD

In the meantime I worked on the Nova a bit today (http://i.imgur.com/5yZMM5s.jpg), got it all blocked out and slowly going it and tweaking things, it's still a bit on the bulky side but once I get the geometry cleaned up more I'll start really tweaking the proportions and then going in with all the final detailing.

It depends. The problem with 3D Printing through agencies like Shapeways for materials like Frosted Ultra Detail which I used is that it's done by cm3. So that means that making sometime twice as long, twice as wide and twice as tall means the volume is increased eightfold, not just twice. That is what makes doing a Battlebarge daunting, the relative scale. There are some things I want to try, doing an internal framework in a cheaper material and just printing the "outer shell" of the model in the more expensive and detailer material might work to cut the cost down although it will increase the complexity of the project both for me as a designer and for anyone trying to build it.

As far as which I've already design, to be honest the costs for my prints aren't actually that bad. Compared to some of the Ebay Auctions and Recasters I've seen my cost is about the same for a Space Marine equivalent. That is of course ignoring the fact that aside from the Cruiser all of these are completely new designs and such. The only place I really "fall short" is the fact that mine don't come with bases.

It's a case of "6 in one hand, half dozen in the other". I'd argue that side is strictly better than the other, they each have their ups and downs from both the maker's and customer's perspectives.

Thanks!

You're not the first person to ask a question like that about this and a couple other projects of mine, I do have a Shapeways Shop (https://www.shapeways.com/shops/metalcorecollectibles) for my Personal designs but that probably isn't the best place for stuff like this honestly so I'm still exploring a few options for that kind of stuff but I probably won't do anything until I figure out the last two escorts(Hunter/Nova) so I can do the whole lot at once, others have also expressed interest in the Model files themselves so that's a another wrinkle to figure out! xD

EDIT: Also for paint, I'm slowly working at it, I took one of the Gladiuses and brushed on some Vallejo Primer and while it already looks way better than the as-is translucent material but I think I need to get my airbrush set-up for this because with just the brush it's not as nice as I'd like for something this small/detailed, lots of pooling along edges and cracks and such. I'd probably still need to do plenty of touch-ups but still! xD

Unrelated for as far back as I could remember I always thought that Strike Cruisers had Torps, the FW GK SC seems to  but only just the other day was I looking at the rules and actually noticed that the Strike Cruiser....doesn't have Torps, so this might mean going back and tweaking my Strike Cruiser model to fix that up! xD
Title: Re: [BFG] My Grey Knight Fleet Project (Feb Update!)
Post by: MetalCoreKnight on February 08, 2016, 02:37:52 PM
It's been awhile in the making but the core ships I set out to do are all done! The Nova in particular game me some trouble along the way but I think it came together really nicely in the end! The Hunter gave me some trouble because I got mixed up in the scaling initially but that was pretty simple to fix honestly.
I even went back and make some changes to the Strike Cruiser, the Forge World model had what looked like Torpedo Tubes for some reason and it wasn't until very recently that I learned that SCs don't actually have torpedoes at all! xD So while Fixing that I made some other minor changes to bring it in-line with the rules by pulling out the Torpedo Tubes and adding the Bombardment Cannon along with some other tweaks to better match the aesthetics of the rest of my designs!

View the Imgur Album here! (http://imgur.com/a/C1ebU)

Now I just need to work on some simple Ordnance Markers and maybe even some bases(cause obviously mine don't come with them!) and then get down to painting! xD By the end I should have a somewhat respectable fleet, 3 Strike Cruisers, 4 Gladiuses, 2 Novas and 4 Hunters!

Alright, almost a month later I finally got the package! Shipping took forever but that's all in the past now!

Not a great picture but the translucent nature makes it tough! It will take me awhile to process these as I plan on doing to full guide/write up on working with this type of material and parts.

So far everything looks fine but I need to dive in and do a full inspection. Hopefully in a week or two I'll have something to show for it! I got 9 ships to work on after all! xD

They were printed in Shapeway's Frosted Ultra Detail (https://www.shapeways.com/materials/frosted-detail-plastic?li=nav) so it's a UV cured acrylic polymer. It's a good material to work with it's onyl real downside is that it is pretty brittle when compared to regular injection molded plastic.

Post by: Malika on March 21, 2016, 06:58:37 AM
From my experience with the material I'm almost tempted to say that you should try to cast them yourself, just make one of those lego moulds. No worries if you have big mould lines or anything, the resin is a bit easier to work with than the acrylic polymer. At least in my opinion.

Maybe at some point but so far I haven't had much luck with resin casting, I'm giving it a second go around with some generic 40K parts but each one of these ships is about ~10 parts and some of them are pretty small/thin so it could end up not working that well, especially with the potential for air bubbles and what not.

Okay, I've been sitting on these long enough so over teh weekend I focused on making sure I got all the pictures I'd need for my basic guide to working on these models and writing out as much as I can think of to start with so I can finally break down the 9 ships I still had on the sprues! I now have a fleet worth approximately 900 pts with 3 Strike Cruisers, 4 Gladius, 2 Novas and 4 Hunters!

Images on this forum are a bit weird, so here is the Strike Cruiser and a link to the full Imgur Album (http://imgur.com/a/DcAOZ).

Well not if I paint it! xD But yeah, there are 3 icons that are repeated across all the ships, the Sword in the Book, just a sword and the shield/crest.

Interesting. I'd like to try Shapeways myself one day. But I guess I would have to rework my models or better design new ones at first. At the moment all my 3d models are optimized for my FDM 3d printer. So they are rather crude due to the lower resolution and the printing method. Sigh, I can’t wait till high resolution SLA or SLS printer finally become a lot more affordable for home/hobby use.

Generally I do not really like the idea of sending my prints to someone else to do the job. There are always a lot of adjustments and little changes to make, till you get the optimal result. That is something you can’t easily do with an external printing service I guess.

Heh, Shapeways has a bit of a learning curve to it, I've been using them for about a year and a half now and for these models they actually come with up to 11 parts per ship all connected with a sprue in order to try and get the best orientation that impacts the visible areas as much as possible.

As far as the printers go, SLS is still quite a ways off, I think the cheapest option available is still like 10-20k or something. SLA on the other hand is getting there, still a bit high end but a lot closer than it was 5 years ago at least!

So I recently learned about the 2010 compendium Ruleset for BFG and was delighted that there are now some OPTIONS for Strike Cruisers! This does mean that my Strike Cruiser model isn't complete! For those that don't know, you can replace the Bombardment Cannon for a Lance Turret, replace the Launch Bay with Str6 Torpedoes or replace the Launch Bay with a Forward facing Bombardment Cannon.

The first one is easy, I already designed a Lance Turret for the Nova so I just tweaked that to fit in where the Bombardment did and voila!

The tougher designs will the be Launch Bay swap outs, not sure how to approach that yet, especially the Torpedoes, does anyone have any ideas/thoughts?

It can just be a panel that fits over the aperture.

Technically yes that would be sufficient but I'm in a position where I can get a bit more involved with it as it is my design after all! Because of the way I cut up the parts for assembly I can easily just redesign the front part of the ship, shown here with teh white wireframe;

Apologies. Seeing the sprues upward i could not find the same shape, so i thought you had changed the extremity of the vessel. But you're right, nothing new since the white base one in fact.

In addition I fulled got my rear in gear and started on painting these as well, didn't get too far, so far a single Thunderhawk and I'm almost done painting a Hunter, just some finishing touches followed with a matte varnish and it'll be good to go! Hopefully I should be able to get some pics up tomorrow.

Some more good news!

First I've standardized the peg/hole size across all my GK ships for the turreted weapons. I mean, each ship comes with the turrets it needs and only the Strike Cruiser has an alternate option(swapping the Bombardment Cannon for a Lance) but still, makes me feel good and means I can easily offer a small "Extra Turret Kit" once I'm done designing all the turrets, might even include some variants for....well...variety!

In addition, I've modified the prows of my Strike Cruisers with Magnet holes! going forward you'll be able to swap between the Launch Bay Prow, Torpedo Prow and Bombardment Prow nice and easy.

Making everything modulable is the right decision, clearly. I like the general appearance. Will you publish picts with all the options ?

Yeah, it's not as big of a deal with Space Marine ships as they don't have a LOT of different options but it's still a good habit.

I'm still working on the Bombardment Prow right now actually, once I get the first pass on it I'll post a picture of it.

The last major variant for my Strike Cruisers, this one swaps out the launch bays for a front arc only Bombardment Cannon to supplement the stock bombardment cannon! Also Magnet holes!

Alright, I've been sitting on the new Strike Cruiser designs for a couple of months now and thanks to some housesitting for my parents I had a couple weeks to focus on painting finally! I painted a few different things but in particular interest to you guys(I hope! ;p) are a trio of my Grey Knight Strike Cruisers! Sadly one of them is one of my older Strike Cruiser designs but two of them were my new versions with different prow options! And MAGNETS!

In other good news, Shapeways recently changed their Pricing method for their Frosted Ultra Detail Material. For me at least it was a great change, I saw an average price reduction of about 22% and I can probably get that to about 25-30% once I do some tweaking to the models.

This does bring up the question that, while I'm already making tweaks is there anything else I could improve about the models? I was thinking about taking the magnetizing idea a bit further and adapting the smaller Bombardment Cannon/Lance Turret on the Strike Cruiser(and maybe the escorts too?) to accept 1/16 dia. and 1/16 tall magnets for easy swapping and pivoting maybe? I've also just realized that the BFG: Expanded ruleset gives the Strike Cruiser ANOTHER option, Launch Bays instead of Port/Starboard Weapon Batteries but at this point, the kits are getting a bit bloated maybe? I always want to just make a separate item that is just like, 3-5 sets on Launch bays and incorporate magnets for those too.....

What do you guys think?

The side prows look really cool! And I mean, really cool!

The modular prows are looking good. The one with the Torpedo(?) tubes looks a little odd. I think it might be the large, flat side armour. It's just lacking a lot of detail which is at odds with the rest of the model.

I thought so! xD That's actually the Prow with the extra Front Arc Bombardment Cannon and I see what you mean about he panels, I'll take a second stab at those and see what I can come up with.

And you like the Port/Starboard Launch bays? I was worried they'd look a little too bulky honestly! xD
Title: Re: [BFG] 3D Printed Grey Knight Fleet Project (May Update!)
Post by: Lord Borak on June 04, 2017, 10:57:44 PM
All those side panels need is the same patterning as the other ships and it will be fine. The little detail in the armour on the forward edge but to break things up would help no end.

The Launch bays are fine I think. You need to make them so that they are visibly launch bays at a quick glance. The last thing people want to do is have to study a model closely just to see what it's weapons are. Plus, its 40k. Why wouldn't they have grand arches?

Title: Re: [BFG] 3D Printed Grey Knight Fleet Project (May Update!)
Post by: MetalCoreKnight on June 18, 2017, 07:36:41 AM
Well, spent a good portion of today going over all my sprues. The Escorts only needed part placement/orientation tweaking which wasn't too bad, although I did combine the Hunters into 2 sprues instead of 4. The Strike Cruiser needed a bit more work, had the updated panels for the Bombardment Prow and the new Main hull and Broadsides that needed to be replaced with the new version that accept magnets to allow for switching between broadsides and hangar bays and last but not least replacing the dorsal mounted Bombardment Cannon/Lance with magnetizable versions.

The Fruits of my labours;
Direct Link (http://i.imgur.com/w8fgJtu.jpg)

Of course, the whole point of this was to accommodate Shapeways new pricing for Frosted Ultra Detail. So how'd it go? well so far I'm looking at about an average of 39% price reduction compared to what they were listed at under the previous pricing scheme. I'm still waiting to see if/how the forthcoming ability to set a specific Printing Orientation affects pricings before I settle on anything specific for prices but to be honest.....so far so good it seems!

Out of curiosity, do you get these cast up in resin once the shapeways have done their thing? If you are mass producing them it will be a cheaper alternative and you can always whack them up on ebay to break even.

The Company I use to get my stuff is really good and pretty well priced.

I dunno, I never really designed them with Resin Casting in mind so I'm sure there are all kinds of awkward overhangs and such I never really accounted for, plus so far I'm still the only one to have bought any of them! xD I'll see how things go, I'll be moving these over to my main Shapeways shop and doing better "marketing" for them and we'll see how it goes.

If I was going to get some stuff cast I'd probably end up doing my Proxy War stuff once I start/finish a ruleset for them.

Also did finally get all my new prints in, unfortunately I made a wee mistake so I'll need to do some modifying to make them work but I will get to them! It does mean I have 13 more ships to paint! Almost doubling my current fleet! I'm also still working on a potential Battle Barge model but that's a bit more of a long term project for now.

That is on the To-Do List as well, I did the basic gunship already but I need to look into how the various Ordnance types are based and such because in admittedly shallow research I could find any kind of standard though that might have just been me not looking hard enough! xD

How about some BFG scaled Xiphon Interceptors or Stormbirds?

Those could be fun mini-projects, although I think I'd have to skew the scale for the smaller ships seeing how small the Thunderhawks already are! xD I wonder with Fire Raptor/Storm Eagles are void rated.....

Oh also I spent 3 hours prepping the next batch of ships to paint, 8 escorts and 4 cruisers, 3 of which are my new Modular design, the 3 cruisers took 73 magnets all told between the Cruiser hulls, assorted Prows and Prow turrets and Broadside options.

Also I counted my Thunderhawks and I think I have 56 of 'em........

Yup, they'll all be going up in my Shapeways shop (https://www.shapeways.com/shops/metalcorecollectibles) alongside the rest of my stuff. Aside from the Small Craft/Ordnance stuff I also want to create a "construction Guide" of sorts that covers things like working with 3D prints, general assembly, magnet installation and such.

I've hoping to get things available for sale in the coming weeks.

It should work out, I made the Stormbird twice the size of the others, so it's about 20mm long as opposed to everything else that's just 10mm.

If you mean as in Highlighting I dunno, it's not something I usually do, usually just on darker bits like the guns here (http://"https://imgur.com/7XdJ4T2") but for these in particular I do a lot of washes so I kinda let that build up the depths and make some more subtle highlights.

Also Side note, I've done and painted up another Cruiser but no picture because it basically looks the same as the other six so......yeah.....

A bit of both really. It's a challenge to be sure and that is something I like to work with, I already do things pretty differently anyways so might as well keep that going as I don't think I've seen any BFG or BFG-like models on Shapeways and such that work like Model Kits to the same extent that I do.

Plus I mean I've done everything else already might as well do up a Battlebarge too you know! xD
